McCain Campaign Manager Assaults Grey Lady

September 22, 2008 3:23 PM

McCain-Palin campaign manager Steve Schmidt attacked the New York Times today.

Asked about a story detailing how McCain campaign manager Rick Davis was paid almost $2 million by an organization that included Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to hinder efforts to enact stricter regulations, Schmidt attacked the newspaper.

"Let's be clear and be honest with each other about something fundamental to this race, which is this," Schmidt said in a conference call. "Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today, not by any standard, a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that, every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. Palin, and excuses Sen. Obama."

Schmidt said that "there's no level of public vetting with regard to Sen. Obama's record, his background, his past statements. There's no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads. This is an organization that is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate, which is their prerogative to be. But let's not be dishonest and call it something other than what it is."

Schmidt added that "everything that is read in the New York Times that attacks this campaign should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective: that it is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and tradition, to advocate for the defeat of one candidate -- in this case, John McCain -- and to advocate for the election of the other candidate, Barack Obama."

You can listen to the call HERE.

Obama spox Bill Burton took issue with the notion that the Times has not vetted Obama, sending out a list of stories the Times has written about the Democratic presidential nominee, and writing:

"# of probing stories the NY Times has written over the course of the campaign about Barack Obama, his life, his religion, his childhood, his politics, his time in the state Senate, his time in the U.S. Senate, his family, his religion, his friends, his fundraising and all other manner of associations: more than 40...

"# of stories the NY Times has written over the course of the campaign about the last major financial regulatory crisis, resulting in a huge bailout, and which John McCain was centrally involved in with his political godfather Charles Keating: 0."

Mr. Tapper, I could have sworn that I saw the list of 40 Obama Times headlines since Jan 2007 that Bill Burton used to rebut the McCain camp’s assertion of unfair coverage here yeseterday. Did you remove it or was it another website?

@ryan: "Do I support the Monroe Doctrine? You mean the claimed US hegemony over the entire Western Hemisphere?"

That's the one. I suspect if you had been around in 1962, you would have been rooting for the Soviets at the blockade of Cuba.

Please, by all means, be sure that Barack Obama makes clear his displeasure with the Monroe Doctrine.

The McCain campaign simply does not want to be accountable or called out of the lies that fall so easily out of their mouths

9/11 • Iraq • Katrina • Financial Collapse

brought to you by Bush, Cheney, McCain and a cast of thousands of..... ...
REPUBLICANS + CONSERVATIVES

the hits keep on coming....

Mission Accomplished !

If you just woke up from a long sleep (like many years) and caught that one political party was ranting on and on about media bias, what would your conclusion be?

After McCain was the darling for so many years, now they are just another castoff from a one night stand.

After the media was used again and again by the administration on 9/11, Iraq, and many other policy decisions,
only now are they biased and pro Obama.

A nation of whiners indeed.

So the confirmed news story is that Davis and several other McCain staffers have been on the payroll to help de-regulate the mortgage industry for years, but the headline screams that the NY Times is biased. How long with the lazy media continue to ballyhoo the sizzle and largely ignore the steak?

Posted by: tdub | Sep 22, 2008 10:40:21 PM

Best part? Using a Sept 13, 2008 NYT report about Biden's son Hunter in the call as an example of why the NYT should report on Biden's son Hunter.

Davis and Schmidt are actually less intelligent than McCain and Palin!

And they say the gods don't have a sense of humor!

"you will see a nation tipping into decline I am deeply troubled to say"

keep working at it. You'll get your wish.

It could happen in less than 3 years if Jimmy Carter get his second term.

For your fantasy: 14% mortgage rates, 21% MM rates, 12% cpi, Iran hostage crisis....but we did get the Community Reinvestment Program established. You know, the birth of the program that is now threatening to bring down the world's financial system.

Conservatism is a word whos ideology has nothing to do with conservation.

If you disagree with this then I may be a hoot but you are a loon.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 22, 2008 9:36:20 PM

"Conservatism is not conservative as we can clearly see."

Leonard is a hoot

Posted by: notafool | Sep 22, 2008 9:34:51 PM

I would think that conservatism by definition of the word, would have as an objective the conservation of a system that functions in equilibrium, where the children and grandchildren share in prosperity as much as the parent.

Conservatism is not conservative as we can clearly see.

"Realize too, if 70% of our society is consumer spending, having higher taxes all around affects our ability to buy those consumables, right?"

hippiechucker actually sounds like an adult

Spin, Spin, Bluster, Outrage - deflect and intimidate.

This is what a McCain (or should I say Palin/McCain) administration would be like.

Could the voting public be so dumb as to do this to the country in these troubling times.

"I'm not inherently opposed to Capitalism,
while it's principal flaw is that it is a snake devouring its own tail, that is another issue."

Some flaw. Capitalism is the engine that has fueled lifestyles for billions that are equivalent to how princes lived a few decades ago.

But lots of smart guys just gotta trash it. they are so much smarter, you know

Posted by: notafool | Sep 22, 2008 9:18:04 PM

hippiechucker,

I am a realist in that I accept greed as a more efficient engine of commerce than altruism, and I'm not saying that I have an alternative to Capitalism.
It seems obvious now, at least to some of us, that taking away the limits to greed and allowing it to be checked by its own sense of altruism is as unrealistic as any idea that Marx had.

Prosperity during the Reagan years amounted then, as it has today, to making the people down the road pay while you claiming title to economic genius of the hour.

Somebody always has to clean up after the party.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 22, 2008 9:09:30 PM

McCain will try anything as his credibility has taken more hits this past week than a bong at a 70s college party.

Also, I don't think they denied it.

Posted by: Mr. Coffee | Sep 22, 2008 8:54:09 PM

Hippiechucker,

I'm not inherently opposed to Capitalism,
while it's principal flaw is that it is a snake devouring its own tail, that is another issue.

My question was about Reaganomics, and while I know you will defend it to the death, it forced Bush 1 to raise taxes in spite of his campaign pledge.

Captalism can work well enough, but the idea that the richest are the fuel of that engine is the lie that we are now laying bare.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 22, 2008 8:47:06 PM

In the meantime, Jake, the only REAL story here is that McCain’s campaign manager Rick Davis was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations.

You, as a journalist, should not be distracted by the GOP's distractions.

Steve Schmidt attacked the NYT, but nowhere did he dispute the facts of their piece about Davis' ties to the mortgage giants.

Kill the messenger... If McCain had his way he'd kill the free press on day 1 of his presidency. America's own Putin.

Luckily he's going to lose the electoral vote pretty badly.

Posted by: GOP = distraction | Sep 22, 2008 8:35:33 PM

Ryan C,

Predatory lending took on a new face when it went after the people that did not need subprimes. Subprimes were pushed by the banks/mortgage companies (not Fannie or Freddie) because there was greater profit in them. Again, some people were also pushed into subprimes because they could not afford to purchase MULTIPLE homes for the purpose of flipping. They resorted to no doc loans while they thought they could get good ROI. That dried up because American jobs that paid well dried up.

They cannot have everyone else's cake and eat it, too! It is now time for the bottom up instead of the trickle down theory to get a shot.

Congress needs to take that 700B and distribute it to us masses. Consumers drive all businesses/markets. You can't take away what drives us and then expect to make profits.

This is not that hard, either, so I'm not sure why Paulson is acting like he doesn't get it. Maybe somebody's got something on him.

Obama/Biden 08!

Leonard Peltier,

"But the call was so rife with simple, often inexplicable misstatements of fact that it may have had the opposite effect: to deepen the perception, dangerous to McCain, that he and his aides have little regard for factual accuracy."

Sorry I missed it! Check out CNN's
"facts" every so often. The lean so far over backwards to paint the picture of objectiveness that they make up negative stuff about Obama in order to balance out the truth about McCain. Truly amazing to watch journalism go down the tubes for ratings.
