McCain Campaign Plays Gender Card, Accuses Democrats of "Sexist" Attacks on Palin
September 02, 2008 4:40 PM
“I am appalled by the Obama campaign’s attempts to belittle Governor Sarah Palin’s experience," said RNC Victory 2008 Chair and senior McCain adviser Carly Fiorina today in a statement. "The facts are that Sarah Palin has made more executive decisions as a Mayor and Governor than Barack Obama has made in his life. Because of Hillary Clinton’s historic run for the Presidency and the treatment she received, American women are more highly tuned than ever to recognize and decry sexism in all its forms. They will not tolerate sexist treatment of Governor Palin.”
Is attacking Palin for inexperience sexist?
The vice presidential running mate has served for two years as governor of a small state, than before that 10 years as a mayor of a small town.
Surely one could argue that the comments about Palin's pulchritude, the questions about what kind of mother she is -- those are comments that could raise an eyebrow if not ire.
But inexperience?
Here is the McCain campaign's backup evidence of chauvinism. I leave it to you to determine which of the following attacks you think are sexist.
**
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL):
Obama: “Well, my understanding is that Governor Palin’s town of Wasilla has I think 50 employees. We’ve got 2,500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million a year. You know, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month. So I think that our ability to manage large systems and to execute I think has been made clear over the last couple of years.” (CNN’s “360 With Anderson Cooper,” 9/1/08)
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH):
Brown: “She’s been mayor of a city half the size of Blue Ash and governor of a state with half the population of Hamilton County. … John McCain failed in his first big decision as a potential president. He chose somebody with no experience to be a heartbeat away from being the U.S. president.” (Steve Kemme, “At Picnic, Brown Slams Palin,” The Cincinnati Enquirer, 9/2/08)
Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE):
Biden On Palin: “She’s Good Looking.” “‘From our perspective the whole deal is how does the government help you get back up without getting in the way?’ Biden asked. ‘There’s a gigantic - gigantic — difference between John McCain and Barack Obama, and between me and I suspect my vice presidential opponent. And that is that –’ The crowd laughed. ‘Well there’s obvious differences,’ Biden said, beginning to ham it up. ‘She’s good looking,’ he said, laughing.” (Jake Tapper, “Oh, That Joe! (Number 4 In A Series) — Biden On Difference Between Him And Palin: ‘She’s Good Looking,’” ABC News’ “Political Punch” Blog, blogs.abcnews.com, 8/31/08)
Former Senator And Obama National Co-Chair Tom Daschle (D-SD):
Daschle Attacked Palin As Having “Absolutely No Experience” And Being “Extreme Right Wing.” Daschle: “Three questions: With absolutely no experience, are we ready, if necessary, to place our future in her hands as commander in chief and our premier negotiator with other world leaders? Are we comfortable in having a VP who represents the extreme right wing, including the advocacy of creationism and a denial of any human responsibility in climate change? What happens if Gov. Palin is found to have abused her office in the firing of a police officer?” (“Politico Arena — Palin Edition,” The Politico, 8/31/08)
Obama Spokesman Mark Bubriski:
Obama Spokesman Erroneously Attacked Palin As A Supporter Of A Nazi Sympathizer. “Barack Obama’s campaign, perhaps miffed at all the Democrat-is-weak-on-Israel theme, started striking back at John McCain almost as soon as he tapped Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Where the Dems are trying to paint McCain as more financially out of touch with people, they’re strongly suggesting that his Christian conservative running mate is no friend to the Jews. ”Palin was a supporter of [MSNBC analyst] Pat Buchanan, a right-winger or as many Jews call him: a Nazi sympathizer,” Obama spokesman Mark Bubriski wrote in an email.” (Naked Politics Blog, Accessed 9/2/08)

Conservatives need not worry, The Libs will self destruct very soon. They are allready in favor of killing their own children thru abortion. Simply do the math, Conservatives love kids and have larger families, Libs have very few kids if any. It's just a matter of time!

It is sexism and the MSM should be more objective and respectful instead of sexist and in the tank for Obama

Thanks, A.L.L. I think I will rave on. So take out the phrase, "especially coming from a feminist," from my earlier comment, and answer the questions. Particularly the one about giving these two women the courtesy of making their own choices. Not to mention the one about whether a person with a special needs child should ever hold public office.
I don't care if you're a feminist or not. Or whether you are Republican, Democrat, Independent, male or female, black or white. You're right - this is a parental responsibility issue, and until I hear otherwise, I will assume that she has been a responsible parent and will not assume to judge her based on 5 days of wild media speculation and partisan sniping.

Liberals are finding themselves critical of Sarah.... a woman's choice to raise children and earn a living, calling it bad parenting. Maybe it is because the Dem's have no one like Sarah. If Sarah was a dem none of this would be an issue. Where are the Feminist? I am just trying to understand. You can not have it both ways. I have no clue how to vote? Where are the Feminist?

To Sue and GOUSA247:
You can both try to lay claim to the Feminist postion all you want but I still say it isn't a Feminmist issue. It's a parental responsibiloity issue and an ethical issue. You both think you've got truly decent people cornered on the feminism issues, but you are very wrong. Sarah Palin is anti-woman or she wouldn't have exposed her daughter to such a bizarre situation. Political power is worthless if you can't be a good and thoughtful parent. So rave on all you want to.

I say again..Has anybody ever asked Barack Obama can he bring up his two kids and be president of the United States? They're asking can she be vice president and be a mother. Where are the feminists?

A.L.L. posts "I'm a feminist, and I supported Hillary Clinton. I was planning on voting for McCain until he chose Sarah Palin. I, too, am asking how she can be a VP and be the mother of four children (her oldest is now an adult), one of whom is pregnant and one of whom has Down's Syndrome. I ask this question as a woman, because I could never put my daughter in such a position or allow anyone else to oversee the upbringing of my special needs child. This isn't an issue of feminism. It's an issue of parental responsibility."
(Even when your children are adults, you are still their mother. She is the mother of 5.) Maybe her daughter is cut from the same cloth as her mother, and is prepared to take responsibility for her actions, and does not want her mother to shrink back from this call because of her daughter's situation. Perhaps the young lady sees the big picture, and is willing to take the temporary heat, rather than live with knowing her behavior caused a dream their entire family could have realized to be abandoned. Should no one - man or woman - be allowed to be in an elected position, or any job, for that matter, if they have a special-needs child?
I'm sorry, your comments just don't make sense, especially coming from a feminist. What you would do would be your choice. Why not afford these two women the same courtesy?

Dawn's comments (7:23) remind me of how some people claim that rape victims "asked for it." I am so bemused by the confusing stand that many in the media and left-wing blogs are taking on this woman - NOT her experience, but her personal life and her children - that I'm waiting to hear again about how mean-spirited and into the politics of personal destruction the RIGHT is. (Hello Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice -- and on, and on, and on.) The media have spent more time digging up dirt on this woman in the last 5 days than they have in any real vetting on Obama (or John Edwards, for Pete's sake) in 2 years! I'd had enough of what was thrown at Ms Clinton, and I'm no feminist, but this is absolutely ridiculous and pathetic and cruel - not to mention mean-spirited and hypocritical. I can't imagine anything but this reflecting badly on Obama/Biden, and that makes me sad, because I DON'T believe it's them doing it. The far-left has gone off the deep end and the media is running close behind them with their microphones and notepads. Could we PLEASE get back to the issues?

It seems to me that all of this nonsense is just more of Operation Chaos.
What really bothers me is that the Republicans are going to put both Bristol and Levi (the boy who is the father)on display at the convention. What kind of people would put two teenagers in a difficult position on public display like that? Who could approve of such a monstrous political tactic? As a parent I am appalled. I've never heard of anything so misguided in my life! How could any truly decent person vote for McCain or Palin with the way THEY are handling her daughter's pregnancy? Sarah Palin isn't a feminist, not if she is capable of doing such a profoundly embarrassing thing to her own daughter just to make a political statement. Sarah Palin is anti-woman, obviously.
Shame on the Republicans.

The lefties are puzzled. They feel like the prize was in their grasp, but now it might slip away because of their screwing Hillary.

If Gov. Palin doesnt care about forgein policy or Iraq then how will she keep the country safe? The GOP is huge on talk of protecting the Country, but then they pick someone that doesnt care what the terrorist will try to do to america. Im sorry but that is scary and stupid. We dont know anything about this lady or her family besides her daughter is pregant. I cant vote for republicans this time around, because McCain just showed his true judgement. The VP is suppose to be someone that is ready to step in the postion of the POTUS in case something happend to the president. If she is one sided on every issue or doesnt care about what our enemys are doing then she doenst need to be no where near the white house.
What the GOP also doenst get is all of the Women that voted for hillary clinton wants her in the white house not someone that we dont know anything about. I dont like how they are playing the sexist card to get votes.

John McCain is 72 years old and this unknown woman would literally be a heartbeat away from being president and leader of the free world. Please tell me what is NOT insane about this picture?
Posted by: DaveM | Sep 3, 2008 12:32:14 PM
Of Course they are.
They play every card they can get their little greedy hands on.
THey are the party of lies, deceit, and fraud, and they fooled the american people with Bush's fraudlection last time and are doing it again with McCain/palin
The GOP is the worst that humanity has to offer.

Maybe the reports we get over her in England are not the full reports, but I have seen repeated reports where Obama has said "people's families are off-limits" - What exactly has he said against Palin's daughter that has you all up in arms? Obama does not control the media as far as I am aware but I could be mistaken - is this ia case of only in America?
