McCain-Palin Media Avoidance Watch, Continued
September 22, 2008 8:11 AM
It's been 24 days since Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was introduced to the nation as Sen. John McCain's choice to be a heartbeat away from leadership of the Free World. And though McCain reassures all skeptics that Palin -- who got her first passport two years ago -- is "absolutely" prepared to be president, the way campaign officials have protected her from her press corps does not necessarily suggest that they hold her ability to handle such a routine event -- a press conference -- in high regard.
The Washington Post editorialized yesterday about this, writing that "McCain's selection of an inexperienced and relatively unknown figure was unsettling, and the campaign's decision to keep her sequestered from serious interchanges with reporters and voters serves only to deepen the unease. Mr. McCain is entitled to choose the person he thinks would be best for the job. He is not entitled to keep the public from being able to make an informed assessment of that judgment. Ms. Palin's speech-making skills are impressive, but the more she repeats the same stump speech lines, the queasier we get. Nor have her answers to the gentle questioning she has encountered provided any confidence that Ms. Palin has a grasp of the issues."
McCain, himself, was once the most accessible presidential candidate in modern history; he once pledged to hold weekly news conferences if elected president. But he, himself, has gone 40 days without taking questions from his press corps, his last media availability having been on Aug. 13 in Birmingham, Mich.
Early on in this campaign, before McCain began his media avoidance strategy, the McCain campaign would muse aloud about how relatively inaccessible Sen. Barack Obama was. Why was he afraid of answering questions? they would ask. Weren't we in the press corps insulted? Didn't the American people see how cowardly this was of Obama, the disdain it showed he had for accountability?
Ahem.

This guy is a ABC News' Senior National Correspondent? Man they throw around titles. Cracks me up...
I can't wait to read the analysis on why Obama didn't win the election. They should start writing them now, so it's fresh in their memory.
If you work in MSM, I would suggest spending some time NOW with your resume, as more lay-offs after this election will surely come. People are just tired of the bias...

yes the Empress as no clothes, but it is the cheering crowd that keeps her fooled until some small child will speak up, then the crowd will jeer; but what does this say about the crowd? It is to McCain's'discredit that he foisted someone as poorly qualified as Palin on us, and it is a terrible insult to us that he should do so. Do we not deserve better? Ms Palin isn't to be vilified for not being qualified, she is what she is, but she should have known better than to have accepted his invitation. With grace she could have said thanks but no thanks, like she did for the bridge to nowhere. However McCain took the spotlight off himself and his family and sacrificed Palin instead. This is a war hero!

Jake you are making the same mistake others have made. If you went to school in the U.S. you know all you need is to be 35 years old and a natural born citizen. nothing about a passport or talking to the MSM. Sorry Jake but you are looking down your nose again at the American people.

Benjamin9
“I believe she has appeared before more folks than Biden.
Whats the deal w/Biden?”
Opps sorry Benjamin9, apparently you didn’t get the memo.
It’s currently a 3 way race for VP.
Obama’s running against Palin for VP, and in a distant 3rd is Biden (ya know he takes the train home almost every night” Biden.

Where's Sarah?? From todays' Washington Post:
In addition to having private sessions with Afghan president Hamid Karzai and Colombian president Alvaro Uribe scheduled for Tuesday, the Alaska governor now has a more elaborate list of heads of state lined up for Wednesday.
According to the campaign, she will meet Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili; Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko; Iraqi President Jalal Talabani; Pakistani President Asif Ali Zadari; and Indian Prime Minister Manhoman Singh in a single day.
So, let's see-- she's done the Gibson interview and Hannity this past week, as well as campaigning. Sorry if she doesn't have time right now for you, sir but after the disdainful way the media has treated her, I don't blame her for keeping her distance. Maybe try some decency and respect for her & her family, and see if that gets you an interview or press conference.

“I worry that when we need to know facts that we have a right to know, they will avoid communicating with us, too!!! Obama/Biden '08!!!”
Good question, excellent observation!
Now pop quiz
Name 5 Bills/Legislation Obama has authored, fought for, and gotten passed?
Being 1 of 99 Co-Sponsors on a bill on a bill doesn’t count.
The Bills/ Legislation have to have a name or number that can be checked and verified.
Example:
McCain/Feingold, McCain/Lieberman, McCain/Kennedy
I don’t care if you agree or disagree with the bills,
I’m just trying to find out if this guy ever showed up for work!
Public law (xxx-xxxx) SB (senate bill) and such.
WE know a lot about Palin’s 20 months of Gov so far.
Over the same time space, 20 months, I can’t find a single thing this guy did.
To make it easier pick ANY 20 month segment that Obama was a State or Federal Senator, you can even use a segment that covers 20 month’s State through Federal.
If you can’t come up with some why would you vote for this guy?

She sure isn't keeping herself sequestered from voters - she's out there everyday and they love her.
On economic, foreign policy and social issues her beliefs and policy ideas are in line with the core values that have made this country great. Her record shows she has the backbone, intelligence and political skills to get her policies enacted. I'd say she's qualified.

Jake,
the objection as I understand you is that Palin is not running through the media gauntlet that is designed to destroy her? The Ossiah goes on O'Reilly and gets an interview that was designed to portray Bill as a moderate rather than vet Barrack. Otherwise, the media is adoring.
I am still waiting for a investigation into ACORN and the Chicago machine. The scale of intensity is not equal. I am wondering how the Dems would feel if the media voted 9-1 Republican?

I think the McCain Palin team is doing the right thing. When McCain opened up his campaign he was not able to stay on message. Obama's lack of transparency had him in the lead. If that is what America wants then that is what they get.
McCain/Palin rock!!

I see no reason for the McCain campaign to brief representatives from the Obama campaign (i.e. what you call "the media") in the middle of an election.
The public is best served by the approach they are taking - go direct to the people and skip right over the media priesthood.
Worked for Reagan.

Jake snarks: "Early on in this campaign, before McCain began his media avoidance strategy, the McCain campaign would muse aloud about how relatively inaccessible Sen. Barack Obama was. Why was he afraid of answering questions? they would ask. Weren't we in the press corps insulted?"
Obama is again 'relatively inaccessible' - he won't address reporters without leaning on a TelePromptR - but you lot aren't insulted, or apparently even interested. It's all Palin-bashing, all the time.

WaPo: [McCain] is not entitled to keep the public from being able to make an informed assessment of that judgment.
Problem is, since all of the MSM reporters are panning for mud in Alaska and none asking any inconvenient questions (Rezko? Ayers? Wright?) of Obama, the public is being robbed of the ability to make an informed assessment.

I can see the moon from my house, perhaps I am qualified to be an astronaut. All the people along the borders of every country who are not blind but can actually see across the border are now qualified to be VP. It is not a disgrace to be educated, to have studied hard, to get letters behind our name, letters that stand for something. There is nothing wrong with being educated and perhaps knowing the meaning of the word "doctrine". I thought everyone in school had to learn history of their country, this is not an elitist prerogative but a duty. Ms Palin should know what the Bush doctrine is as well as the doctrines of the past Presidents. This is high school stuff. Once more people it is not a sin or against "family values" to be educated and then apply that education to the service of your country, like being VP or being President. What we have here is the dumbing down of America and people are proud of it. Look across that border and learn another language! Glorifying ignorance will not get us anywhere. Try some humility for a change!

The media is a laughingstock. Here's a guy all lathered up about access to one of the Vice Presidential Candidates (How many calls has Tapper made to Joe Biden for an interview?) while the Democratic Presidential nominee's toughest question from ABC to date is which flavor of ice cream he prefers.
I understand there was over 14 million+ dollars in charitable funds guided by Mr. Obama in Chicago that oddly have not been accounted for. Where is the media scream and cry to find out what happened to the money in Obama's trust during what appears to be his only experience handling money?
It appears there is no shame with Mr. Tapper or many of his counterparts at ABC. Who will be the first responsible news organization in America to demand to know what became of the money under Obama's supervision as Director of the Woods Fund?

The big loser this November will be the MSM, Americans across the country have been looking at the political tripe and personal attacks served up by ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN on the GOP ticket. It looks like the public is making their voices heard via the Nielsen ratings....how did those ABC Emmys do last night?...the worst ratings in the history of the program and it's been telecast for over forty years?

For those of you who see these news stories as a chance to attack Obama, why don't you just focus on the issue--Palin. Is it really your opinion that a VP candidate does not need to talk to the press, answer questions from the American people and generally be accountable for her record? Is paranoia about the media so deep that you don't think anyone in the media can ask a fair question? Can you really be satisfied that she has met the requirements of office with the amount of information you have at hand? If the answers to these questions if "yes" that's scary enough but of course it is really the judgment of McCain that is in question here as well--picking someone who he has to hide from the public and who still remains an unknown in the political arena. The thought of having a candidate one beat away from the presidency who has yet to respond openly to her public may be the single best reason to reject her.

Jake, I'm glad to see this posted. Those who are whining should remember that this woman compared herself to a pitbull--a remark that's been endlessly repeated. So if she's that tough she shouldn't be shrinking from media interviews. I thought she did poorly in the interview with Charlie Gibson and that's all we've seen. If she can't handle step one of running for office, what is she going to do when facing the Washington press corps and avoidance isn't an option?

The MSM is nobody's friend...The problem is that voter's get the impression that the campaign is afraid that she'll make a mistake...Beyond that, there really ARE questions that go beyond the Sean Hannity softballs...1. Followup about this Trooper nonsense...2.Followup on her family's involvement with a party that would consider cessession from the US...3. Follow-up on several questionable assertions that SHE made which bring her credibility into question...I'm sure that many of the big issue questions will be explored in the debate. The questions that require answers are these fringe issues...McCain's campaign makes an intelligent politician look like - a Beauty Queen.

Why is the Arctic Empress
hiding from the media?
The Empress has no clothes!

Jake, Glad to see this posted. It is a question we should all be asking and the people who respond as if this were whining should stop and think for a moment: Would you hire someone to work in your own company who you had not confirmed was qualified for the job? If not, why would you want someone in the top office of the country who has yet to prove that she is anywhere near qualified? Besides, she claims she's a self-described "pitbull" who can handle anything so let's see her handle the press for starters.
