McCain Says He Can't Fire SEC Chairman
September 21, 2008 8:18 PM
"By the way I know he can't be technically 'fired,'" Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., just said on "60 Minutes." "But when I'm president, if I want someone to resign, he resigns."
We fact-checked his threat to fire SEC chairman Chris Cox last week, as you may recall, a U.S. Supreme Court decision would suggest that the president does not have the power to remove the SEC Chair. But, we noted, certainly pressure can be brought to force someone out, as when then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., and then-House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., called for President Bush to dump then-SEC chair Harvey Pitt.

UPDATE: A U.S. District Court of Appeals ruling that SEC Commissioners are "subject to removal by the President for cause; its chairman is selected by and serves at the pleasure of the President" makes this as a legal matter somewhat muddier. SEC experts with whom we've spoken say they believe the president still cannot "fire" the SEC chairman because of the Supreme Court precedent, but the U.S. District Court ruling makes this more of an unresolved legal question. The SEC itself has not weighed in.

-Anyone who wants to pay 25 times more for electricity than they have to, knock yourself out. Go for it. Pay whatever you want to.-
Our soon to be updated sewer plant will, save 60% on its electric use. That means I can pay less in taxes to keep it running. The mainance cost will be lowered by 18%. Sounds like a better deal. And the Solar panels on my parents house has reduced energy use by 16% so far for each of the last two years. Yea, sounds better than McCain.

Annenberg files? Interesting to know that the Department of Justice, had McCain shut down the ads, as 'untrue'. Unless the Department of Justice, is working for Obama, then I could see a bigger issue. No more comments have come from McCains camp, when asked if he still agreed the ads were true. No Comment, from McCains advisors? Curious indeed.

You do know of course paying far more for electricity will drive up inflation, make goods more expensive, possibly cause businesses to fail and jobs to be lost, but what the heck, at least you can feel good knowing the utility bill you can't afford to pay is well diversified.
Sometimes diversification has a cost. A very expensive cost.
If and when solar, wind and other technologies can become competetive in price, I'm sure people will flock to them.

Annenburg files? I will look into this myself. But if Palin can hide from Alaska, why can't Obama hide from Annenburg? I say we expose both.

John Harris, the Republican speaker of the Alaska House, is not even refering to troopergate, but other misconducts of power. Her debts and crime rates, are destroying Alaska. Alaskains want anwsers, before she runs away from the problems.

Do you remember the "gang of 14" that broke the deadlock of judicial appointees a few years back?
This was a bipartisan group that would work together to get the job done.
re Palin, you really must be kidding. What has Obama to hide with the Annenburg files? Why are Obama's team trying to shut down the investigation? Why is Obama's team flooding a radio station multiple times and not even allowing an investigator to speak? What is he afraid of? America want to know what he is hiding! Where is your indignation for not allowing all the facts to come out?
Wouldn't it be better to know now than having to impeach a President? Isn't the top of the ticket more important than the bottom of the ticket?
Can we get your bipartisan support to FULLY investigates these files ASAP?

Dave in lv, you are missing the BIG point. Diversify energy consumtion. Its like diversifing, your stock portfolio. Until we can design better energy productions, we can not rely on so few.

OK you can turn lead into gold. Now see if you can do it for 10 cents a pound.
Harry Reid has said Nevada can get ALL of it's electricity from solar today.
It's true.
Only the average utility bill would be $16k per month.

I believe she has only fired political appointees that she has every right to fire at her will.
How many people has any President, Dem or Rep fired? So far as I know each admin has had wholesale firings of large masses of people. Clinton fired every single prosecutor he could and started with a brand new batch.
If you take a job that serves at the will of the executive, you can be let go at any time for any or no reason.
Didn't Hillary fire everyone in the travel office and bring in her own crew?

I am also not aware of anyone being able to turn lead into gold..........................THEY CAN
They use a cyclotron to turn small
amounts of Lead onto Gold...
it Cost about 50,000 times the price of
the gold to do it in the Lab.

Dave in lv, McCain has only worked with Dems, who agreed to his proposals. This I see as fact. Obama HAS reached to Republicans, and even aloud for both parties to fix any loopholes with-in them. Republicans and DEms, have helped him with his energy proposals. McCain only lets those Dems who agree with his, wholeheartedly. Which has only been a couple of times.

I think that she should not being trying to stall the investigation, because the committee IS bi-partisan. When they were voting to even open the investigation, the vote was 12-0 in favour of investigating- and there were plenty of Republican Senators too, mind you.
It's just that from what I've read that she has been firing her whole board in Alaska and then replacing them with her friends and stuff, that's led me to believe she may have something to hide.

re troopergate a Dem was appointed to lead the investigation with the agreement it would be fair and not political. It was known at the time he was also an Obama supporter.
Since he gave his word, prior to seeing any evidence presented, he gave an interview to ABC saying his committee will be giving Obama an "October surprise" that will throw the election to Obama.
In his mind she has already been convicted before anything has been presented.
What would you do if you were the Palins?

Rex
Technological breakthroughs are not guaranteed. There isn't any scientific literature I've seen that said solar cost reductions of that magnitude are possible.
We can send a man to the moon but we can't make it cheap enough for everyone to go.
I am also not aware of anyone being able to turn lead into gold.
There are some things only God can do...

Dave in lv,
I believe they're talking about Palin's ethics investigation into the alleged firing of a trooper for not firing her brother. It's making me more skeptical of how now that her husband's refused subpoenas and she's hired legislators to try to stall the investigation.
Actually her approval ratings have been falling there...

"But when I'm president, if I want someone to resign, he resigns."
WHAT does he mean?? Blackmail? I thought PRECISELY the reason why the president is not given the power to just fire anyone he likes-like the SEC chairman- plus the balancing of the Legislative and Judiciary with Executive (The President's administration) was to PREVENT ABUSE of power? And he says as long as he says it the person will resign? Er...this is reminding me of Mugabe or someone.

Rex,
I did read it and Obama's tax plan doesn't match what said in his last two interviews. Please google his new, maybe plans that he is saying he'll do.
Re Palin, what fraud? She has an 80% approval rating from those who know her best and know the issues best. They really like her.
And you will too if you give her a chance...

re: 'If all goes well the best subsidized cost in the future would be to cut it by 60-70% in 10-25 years from now.'
but McCain says the 'fundamentals' of America, are the greatest in the world, how could it possible take so long?

Sorry historyforgotten
"So far only Obama has agreed to work with both parties,"
Obama has only talked but never done it. Oops, I forgot. He created a bill saying we shouldn't give nuclear weapons to terrorists. No one disagreed with that one. That is his one and only example of working with both parties I'm aware of.
At the same time JM not only SAID he will work with Dems, he has done it numerous times on VERY controversial subjects.
I believe JM is also the only candidate saying he will try to get Dems positions in his cabinet.
No such talk coming from Obama.
