Members of 'Fringe' Alaskan Independence Party Incorrectly Say Palin Was a Member in 90s; McCain Camp and Alaska Division of Elections Deny Charge*

September 01, 2008 6:52 PM

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she and her husband were once member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United State.

And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

After refraining from commenting on the charge for a day, the McCain campaign on Tuesday asserted that Palin was never a member of the AIP, and

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, told ABC News on Monday that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

This, it should be noted, does not square with official records.

Gail Fenumiai, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, tells ABC News that regardless of the impression given to members of the Alaskan Independence Party, "Gov. Sarah Palin first registered to vote in the state in May 1982 as a Republican, and she has not changed her party affiliate with the Division of Elections since that time."

Clark on Tuesday night said that she had been mistaken.

But for whatever reason, Clark thought that in 1994 Palin was a kindred spirit.

"We are a state's rights party," says Clark, a self-employed goldminer. The AIP has "a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law."

She says it's not accurate to describe the party as secessionist -- they just want a vote, she says, adding that the members of the AIP hold different opinions on what Alaska should be.

"My own separate opinion as an individual is that we should be an independent nation," Clark says. Others in the AIP "believe that being a commonwealth would be a good avenue to follow." Some advocate statehood -- but a fuller statehood than exists now.

She doesn't know what Palin's position was.

"It never came up in conversation," Clark recalls. "But ...our platform was right under her nose."

Earlier this year, Palin sent a video message to the AIP for its annual convention, where AIP vice chair George Clark told the small crowd that Palin "was an AIP member before she got the job as a mayor of a small town –- that was a non-partisan job.  But you get along to go along -– she eventually joined the Republican Party, where she had all kinds of problems with their ethics, and well, I won’t go into that.  She also had about an 80 percent approval rating, and is pretty well sympathetic to her former membership."

A day after ABC News requested a response from Palin as to whether she was ever a member of the AIP, McCain campain spox Brian Rogers told ABC News that Clark's "allegations are false."

"Governor Palin has been a registered Republican since 1982," Rogers says, providing voter registration documentation showing her to be a Republican. "As you know, if she changed her registration, there would have been some record of it. There isn’t."

Rogers says that Palin didn’t attend the AIP convention in 1994, "but she visited them when they had their convention in Wasilla in 2000 as a courtesy since she was mayor."

When asked if Palin ever identified herself as a member of the AIP, Rogers said, "No, she's a lifelong Republican."

The AIP platform states that the purpose of the party is  to "seek the complete repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska in conformance with Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17, of the federal constitution ... To prohibit all bureaucratic regulations and judicial rulings purporting to have the effect of law, except that which shall be approved by the elected legislature ... To support the privatization of government services ...”

Walter Hickel, a former Republican governor, was elected to the governorship in 1990 as an AIP member -- the third-largest party in Alaska -- with a plurality vote of 38.8%. A Seattle Post-Intelligencer story that year said that "Hickel is running with the Alaska Independence Party, a fringe group advocating that the 49th state declare itself a sovereign nation. But he's not a separatist; he's an opportunist: the Independence Party was the only 11th-hour ticket to the general election."

Hickel returned to the Republican Party in 1994; he endorsed Palin in her gubernatorial run in 2006. Subsequent AIP gubernatorial candidates did not fare as well as did Hickel, garnering less than 2 percent of the vote.

Lynette Clark says that Palin is "a fine individual. She's forthright and she puts Alaska first."

She is not a fan of McCain.

"I can't understand why in God's name she has aligned herself with a candidate who opposes the development of our republic and Alaska's resource wealth," Clark says.

* This post has been updated one day later, after the McCain campaign responded, and again after
Fenumiai returned several calls for comment. And then, once again, after Clark rescinded her assertion that Gov. Palin had been a member of the AIP.

McCain has basically lost control of the Republican Party. The Republican Party has become a stark raving mob under the McCain, Palin’s leadership. Now he is trying to conduct damage control and the mob is resisting his efforts. We are Americans. We need a leader that can stay on course with a steady hand. We need a leader who can motivate us in positive way. We need a leader to unite this nation, to solve our economic issues, and to lead us in a positive way. We definitely don’t need a Vice president that condones and tolerate a radical group that wants to withdraw the State of Alaska from the United States.
Senator McCain has fallen off the path of leadership and honor.

These AIP crackpots have never heard of "Seward's Folly" Aside from Manhattan's purchase with beads, Alaska is actually the only territory that was bought and paid for by the U.S. Government. AIP has no legal claim to any of the lands of Alaska. And, If they don't like it, they can pack their bags and leave.

I never before had reason to question any major candidate’s patriotism, even one whom I disagreed with, but of Governor Palin, I believe this is a legitimate issue.

She has spoken favorably of the goals of the secessionist Alaska Independence Party three times, most recently in 2008. Her husband was a member of the AIP for 7 years until very recently. This is a party whose founder said, "I am an Alaskan, not an American" and whose charter calls for separating from the United States. For a Governor to praise the goals of such a party should raise serious questions about her judgment and her ultimate loyalty to her country (America, not Alaska). Was she angling to be President of Alaska? Don't laugh; the Confederate States of America met extensively in party format before ultimately seceding from the Union. In addition, we share no border with Alaska, "America's only arctic state," as Ms. Palin put it to ABC's Charlie Gibson. Losing 1/5 of America's land mass, and its single largest supplier of oil, should not be taken lightly; thousands of members of the Alaska Independence Party don't.

As for racism, it might be helpful to know where she stands on the issue of whether she believes the world was created about 6,000 years ago, as described in the bible. Aside from being wildly scientific and irrational, such a belief also coincides with a belief that God created all the races in their present “pure” form, instead of all human beings having descended from a common racial ancestor, and then splitting off into the various races we see today. Many people who believe in the literal interpretation of the bible also do not believe the races should co-mingle, as Obama’s parents did, since it is, in their view, against God’s original design. This is directly relevant to Palin’s views on race relations.

If they want their independence I suppose that means they want to turn the land back over to the native people. Right??????

Posted by: Maureen | Oct 12, 2008 1:26:09 PM

HA!!! You say that their goal is INDEPENDENCE, huh? Yeah, right!!!!

You do that through referedums, not hatred for America garbage. Their founder stated that hell is cold as an ice berg compared to his hatred for the U.S. government.

Their current leader admits that Palin has an open door policy for him and that he has never been denied an opportunity to visit her office.

He also talks about her being their insider and helped to get her elected as mayor and governor.

Go to Salon.com if you want to know the facts.

Lastly, who are they to want to "reclaim the land from the U.S. government. If anything, why don't we give it back the native people of Alaska and not those who invaded the land and displaced or killed the native people of that land?

Palin is pallying around with ALASKA SEPARATIST, Tod Palin. This person would be in heart beat away?
How risky can you get?

When McCain chose Palin to be his VP, he put the county LAST.

Sarah Palin is George Bush with lipstick. She lies, deceives, denies, blames, distorts. Attack your opponent with what you are guilty of. Typical Rovian tactic.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones.
She was far too cozy with a group that hates America.

I just pulled this answer from the FAQ section of the AIP website. Please NOTICE THE LAST SENTENCE.

Q: Would I lose my U.S. citizenship?

A: Depending on the form of independence, several forms of citizenship would be possible, including the retention of U.S. citizenship or dual citizenship. However, considering the moral, educational, and economic decay of the U.S., Alaskans' who hold themselves to a higher standard might very well decide to at least maintain an arm's length distance from a country in decline.

I see that some of the kool-aid enthusiasts are still flogging that dead horse of Obama's "lack of experience." He has been in the Senate about twice as long as Palin has been governor and during that time he did a lot more actual governmental work than Palin did. Before that, while Palin was a mayor who needed a city manager to govern a town of 6,000 people, Obama was a state senator who represented many multiples of that number. Palin was a member of the PTA while Obama was in the streets showing people how to stand up for their rights and use the government for their own benefit rather than their detriment. McCain, despite all the time he has been a senator, still doesn't know as much about the economy and domestic policy as Obama does, and there is ample evidence that he doesn't know as much about foreign affairs as he thinks he does.

but you see, we don't have to prove sarah was an actual registered member of this group as the game is all about associations now. and what closer association can there be than the one she sleeps in bed with every night??? her husband was a card carrying member of the hate-america, extremist, alaska independence party.

it's FAIR GAME NOW SARAH!

Barrack Obama and John McCain spend their working days as Senators researching, thinking about and voting on issues of national and international issues relevant to our country. Sarah Palin, based in her answers, evidently, has not. She may or may not be a good govenor for her state but she clearly is not ready for the presidency. That she thinks she is, is what truly scares me about her. She said in an interview in that she had no hesitation whatsoever in saying "yes" to John McCain's asking her to be heart beat away from being president. I want someone in who thought long and hard about it. I want someone in office who is confident enough to take charge and scared enough of the potential consequences of his actions that he hires the best people as his advisors and considers all angles before making decisions. Whomever gets into office has a very tough task ahead. I don't envy them.

Barrack Obama is the best of the two choices for president. He is smart, thoughtful, and looks into the future in terms of global warming as well as long term economic and foreign policy impacts. While he is not perfect, he has my vote.

And for the record, I am a woman. I would like to see someday a President and/or a Vice-President who happens to be a woman. But gender will not matter at all after the election, only policy.

Nor should "history" be a reason to put a woman into the V.P. slot. Extremely strong women have run very difficult countries, including Pakistan and Israel. We just have not yet had the right person to run who happens to be a woman. (Hillary was close but had made too many enemies to be electable).

Poor Sarah. The GOP taught her nothing but talking points. Maybe you noticed during her debate how surprised she looked when Biden discussed McCain's issues. She didn't have enough info to even know if Biden was correct. Before she even walked on the convention stage the media was already programmed to be
her enemy, yet the GOP would not even let her engage. When they finally did let her talk to the media, it wasn't a gentle push into right wing media to get her feet wet, - no, it was right on to Charlie Gibson and Kaitie Couric. That way the GOP could continue to complain abt how badly the media treats poor Sarah. Then, what do they do - well, listen to her now, spouting all her vitriol against Obama. You think this wasn't planned by the Republicans? They didn't pick a real woman capable of handling this job because a real candidate wouldn't put up with this b.s. Did you see her with McCain during the Couric interview? He's shushing her and talking over her like the old man he is. He treats her like his prize fight dog. She thinks she's on the way to becoming a big deal V.P. and on the way to Pres in 2012, when in fact, she'll be on her way to Alaska, the land she really loves, after they lose. In the event this R. strategy works.....well, gosh darn, I'll betcha Granpa John will be darn glad she has so many kids 'cuz that'll keep her out of gov't business where she clearly doesn't belong.

NOTICE: SARAH PALIN NEVER DENIES BEING A MEMBER OF SECESSIONIST AIP; AND NO ONE MENTIONS TODD PALIN, HER HUSBAND, WAS A MEMBER OF SECESSIONIST AIP -- STILL LETTING OTHERS IN MCCAIN CAMPAIGN LIE FOR HER -- GOTTA LOVE IT --AND BY THE WAY, NO ONE CAN ERASE HER VIDEOTAPE SUPPORT OF SECESSIONIST AIP THAT IS LISTED IN THE ARTICLE.....HHHMMMMMM.

Just proves she really CAN work across party lines.

This blogs also proves to me that "O" is scared to death of her on the ticket. Watch the polls in the next weeks. A surprise is coming and it may just be a early snowstorm but we shall see.

CHANGE YOU WON'T REGRET!!

Obama is going to play this ace card a week or two before the election, while McCain will resort to outright made-up lies. Mark m words.

Posted by: AntMo | Oct 6, 2008 1:28:49 PM

If the McCain/Palin campaign is really going to play dirty with Ayers and Wright, then I think the Obama folks need to pick this one up and run with it. An ad showing a clip of her video address interspersed with some of the the leader's quotes would be appropriate. Right now the Obama campaign seems to be fighting back with the Keating 5 stuff, but it doesn't pack the same emotional/psychological punch as the accusations that Palin et. al. are making. A juxtaposition of Palin's close association (if not membership) with a group of successionist radicals plus a reminder of McCain's participation in the S&L scandal might do it.

Posted by: Susan | Oct 6, 2008 10:06:16 AM

In observing Palin's body language closely when with McCain (and I am a well trained observer) I see that she does not like or care for McCain in the least. He is but a stepping stone for her. Her actions and reactions are rote and simply superficial acts. There is no connection whatsoever from Palin to McCain- he is simply an object to be used for her own advantage. Very, very dangerous to this country.

Posted by: S.C. | Oct 5, 2008 11:47:44 PM

Jake: You need to do an update on this story especially since Palin likes to make accusations about others associations with terrorists. AIP has a dark shrouded mystery to it including the murder of one of its leaders.
I know I saw it on AE last year-I think it was Cold Case or City Confidential. Please dig deeper. I am also going to dig it up.
