Obama Adviser/Former McCain Groomsman Gary Hart on Palin Pick: 'I Think it Was Irresponsible'
September 04, 2008 4:12 PM
In an interview for the ABC News Shuffle podcast today, former presidential candidate and Sen. Gary Hart, D-Colo. -- an adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and a groomsman in the 1981 wedding of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Cindy Helmsley -- did not hold back on his views of McCain's VP pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
"I think it was irresponsible," Hart said. "There are minimum standards; you have to qualify to govern this country. That means understanding the federal system and the federal budget, at the very least; it means being prepared to be head of state and chief diplomat of this country under our Constitution, and it means being prepared to be commander in chief of the military forces. This lady does not qualify on any of the three levels."
Listen to the podcast HERE or on iTunes.
"If Sen. McCain were 60 or 62 years old, it would be one thing," Hart said. "He’s not, and age is an issue, and his health and or ability is an issue. This is a woman who is not qualified to lead this country.
"I don’t care what anyone says about 'hockey mom,' or any of the rest of it," Hart continued. "There are minimum standards, and what the Republican Party is doing this week is lowering that standard even more, and there is a point beyond which people are not qualified to run this country."
That said, Hart appreciates the pick in political terms.
"In one fell swoop, Sen. McCain managed to placate the religious right and/or the cultural conservatives, whatever they call themselves, on the one hand, and poke a finger in his own party’s eye in the other," he said. "I thought it was quite a clever move."
Hart got to know then-Capt. McCain when he was Navy liaison to the Senate in the late 70s. "And out of that came a friendship which led to the invitation to join the wedding party," he said. "What I was rather impressed by was the degree to which he had retained his sanity and a pretty good degree of humor under those circumstances,” Hart said, referring to McCain’s experience as a P.O.W. “I wasn’t sure, trying to put myself in the same situation, that I could have done as well," he added.
McCain, Hart noted, "went through a great deal, and I admire and respect him for it. I admire him less for the accommodations he’s made to certain extreme elements of his own party to get the nomination ... I think it’s clear to everyone that he’s not the same independent maverick that he was before."
Hart, who faced scrutiny of his personal life as a presidential candidate in 1988, said he did not see any similarities in his issues with the media, and the McCain campaign's complaints about the media intruding in the life of Palin's unmarried, pregnant 17-year-old daughter.
"Without getting into the details," he said, "I think it’s a long stretch from writing stories about a family which the candidate, herself, is featuring, and having reporters hiding in bushes and peering in a candidate’s house. There are degrees of intrusiveness and extremes have been reached in that regard." Hart added, "If a candidate chooses to make their family the base of their campaign, that’s one thing, but I think, otherwise, it’s time for all public officials just to say it’s none of your business."
You can listen to much more from Hart at the ABC News Shuffle podcast HERE or on iTunes. The podcast was produced by Julia Hoppock and Natalie Gewargis.

Sorry Tim but you're wrong about Obama giving Lugar credit, and Lugar giving Obama credit, for working together to pass major, bipartisan legislation to protect America while in the U.S. Senate.
You don't have to look far for the proof either, Tim. See here, with quotes from each that prove Obama's bipartisan credentials and with Obama discussing which Republicans he would consider for his cabinet, if elected.
This is an incredible contrast to the divisive, partisan, indecent, and truly anti-American Sarah Palin and John McCain. George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and a long list of great Americans fought and worked for centuries against the supremacy of political parties. What we heard from Palin and from McCain for choosing her: they do not put country first. BG

Here's what factcheck says about Obama's record:
Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

I feel like this blog lives in the woods for years, and comes out into an internet cafe to post its hallucinations. Gary has the common sense that most of you do not, to say how it is, where any semi intelligent person sees this as completely irresponsible, and frightening that someone like Sarah Palin might become commander in chief. I began to watch the rnc with an open mind, hoping to get inspired, but instead I felt like I was watch some twilight show for mental nuts trying to elect their cave leader, and not a national convention introducing a potential p and vp of one of the more poweful nations on earth. Its absolutely frightening to the safety of all Americans and the world, when considering the possibility of Palin being in the office. It is an insult to any human being on this planet, to suggest that someone like Sarah Palin is remotely qualified to be the VP, a total insult!

Mary, There is a big difference between "co-sponsors" which is how the Lugar-Obama bill is described in the legislation and "co-authors" which is how the Lugar-Nunn bill is described in the legislation. The Lugar-Obama bill is an UPDATE of the Lugar-Nunn bill so much of the bill that Obama "co-sponsored" NOT co-authored, was already done. You Obama supporters are really grasping at straws when you try and give credit to Obama for something he clearly did not Co-Author according to the official record.

mary:
"And Lugar and Obama actually went to Russia and several other nuclear weapons sites to do research for the bill."
You obviously know something some of us are having a hard time finding!
WHEN did he go?
I'm all ears???????????

Since when did Gary Hart command the respect for anyone to quote what he has to say.
Hart has no credibilty since he blew his chances at the Presidency by boating with his mistress and getting caught on film.
The DemocRATS are exhibiting sheer desperation in their attempts to slow down the Sarah Palin convention surge.
Anybody But Obama...

Palin should have been tapped for George W. Bush's cabinet. She has all the credentials...let's see...Librarian won't ban books...fire her (so what about the Constitution). Police Chief isn't a member of NRA...fire him. Town Councilors aren't pro-life...fire them. Safety Commissioner won't fire my ex brother-in-law...fire him. She would fit right in.

Gee, egads,
Sorry, she used "First Dude" when referring to her husband. I just updated the quote in deference to McCain....

Mary, Not so fast, Obama should have given Sam Nunn much of the credit for the Lugar-Obama Act which was an UPDATE, of the Nunn-Lugar bill. So my original point still stands, Obama has not written any legislation, he just got his name put on an updated bill.
Lugar and Obama co-sponsored legislation to update the Nunn-Lugar program. The resulting law, which expands the nonproliferation program for nuclear arms to conventional weapons and WMDs, is called the Lugar-Obama Act,
'Nunn and Lugar are co-authors of the 1991 Cooperative Threat Reduction Act, which is designed to provide financial assistance to accelerate the collection and dismantlement of nuclear weapons in the former Soviet

Now, Obama supporters are taking Gary Hart seriously...Gary Hart???
Presidential candidate ruined by sex scandal Gary Hart???
You can put Gary Hart in the same can with Bill Richardson and Barack Obama.
Shake the three up and pull one out.
Not much difference.

MaryLou...apparently you didn't watch the Democratic Convention.
Posted by: jennie | Sep 4, 2008 5:32:03 PM
Jill..so you know the truth and Senator Lugar doesn't? Wow, you McCain supporters are really smart!
And Lugar and Obama actually went to Russia and several other nuclear weapons sites to do research for the bill. So Obama has actually visited Russia, not just lived near it.
Posted by: Mary | Sep 4, 2008 5:30:21 PM
Mary, As is typical of Obama, he takes credit for something that others spent years working on. Lugar & Nunn spent years working on this bill than Obama shows up and gets his name put on the bill. That's the truth.

Why is it that McCain and Palin have people from their past who are willing to stand up and vouch for them? Where are the people from Obama's past that can tell us who he is and what he's done? Oh right, we already know who they are - William Ayers, Rev. Wright, Tony Rezko, Rashid Khalidi... 'nuff said!
Posted by: marylou | Sep 4, 2008 5:18:20 PM
Mary, Madison, one of our founding Fathers, Father of the Constitution and fourth President of the United States never stepped foot on any foreign soil. So what is your point? Truth is back in Madison's day, Europe was much more powerful and prominent as compared to today.

McCain/Palin run rings around Obama/Biden.
McCain has better judgment and Palin has more executive experience.
Don't believe me? Just look at the flailing attacks from the left ever since she was announced as VP. They're scared... and they should be.
Posted by: marylou | Sep 4, 2008 5:15:17 PM
Tim...why don't you ask Republican Senators Lugar and Colburn about Obama's record? They worked on bills with him and they aren't denying that he did. In fact when Obama made an ad that talked about him writing the Nuclear Non-proliferation bill with Lugar (that's now a law), they asked Lugar if it was factual and he said it was. If you want to continue lying about Obama's record...go ahead. McCain lies about it, Palin lies about it, why shouldn't their supporters lie about it.

Good job Mr. Gary Hart for your comment on putting down Ms. Palin - a Democrat brand indeed. But before I believe you are indeed honest and genuine in your assessment, you deliberately omitted why your candidate is better, more qualified and experienced as Ms. Palin does. He's been on the limelight for Presidency for more than a year now and I haven't heard or read why do I need to vote for him - for CHANGE? CHANGE for WHAT? A change in political history that a non-qualified, non-experienced SENSATION got to the oval office?
What has he accomplished as a public servant in the senate? Could you please spell out even just for 1? How about Mr. Biden? He was trampled down in the early stage of the primary. The people believed that he's not even qualified.
Don't fool us that because he's a great orator he can deliver. Show Mr. Obama's credentials and records that he can deliver. Some media commentators is pointing to his ability to manage his campaign organization... perhaps including managing his donors.
If you can tell me why do I need to vote for him at least based on the criteria that you laid out for Ms. Palin, then probably I may vote for him. But if you cannot do it but simply talk just like Mr. Obama we are not fools.
Perhaps you're just undermining her because you believe that beautiful women like her belongs only in bed naked so you can bring down your pants just like John Edwards and Bill Clinton.

Indy-voter
Not preposterous at all....How much did you actually know about B O B before acclaiming him your messiah?
How much does public know even NOW about him?
AT LEAST Sarah has some HISTORY upon which she can be vetted.
She has earned the highest approval rating of a state governor, and that's nothing to be sneezed at!
And when you talk about "the enormous holes in HER resume" .....be certain not to mention "the enormous holes" in Barack's since that would DEFINITELY be a can of worms you will NOT want to confront!
On what basis is B O more prepared to lead than Palin?
Because he's a man?
Has he ever run anything other than a race?
Has he ever run a business?
Even when he had the opportunity to lead the subcommittee on Afghanistan, Obama chose never to even hold a meeting!
The only thing he seems to excell in running...... is his mouth!
Palin on the other hand has run a municipality and governed a state!
She has brought in money by selling the state's Governor's jet on E-bay... which shows a modicum of creativity.
She gave up another job "perk" in the form of a live-in "chef"....which, depending on her cooking skills, might be termed a lesson in fortitude!
She has faced familial issues this week with ideals and guts and spunk.... issue which might have laid another parent m i g h t y low.
Hopefully the media is no longer as "in the tank for Obama" as it has been, and will at least use an open mind in vetting Sarah Palin.
Hopefully, the media is no longer " as in the tank for Obama" as it has been, and will at least use an open mind in FINISHING THE VETTING OF OBAMA!

I don't think supporters of Miss "I got my first passport in 2007 at age 43 and I visited Ireland, and stopped in Germany on my way to Kuwait and I've got foreign relations experience becuase Alaska's next to Russia" should talk.
