Obama Finds Curious McCain's Plea to Reduce Partisan Rancor
September 06, 2008 7:57 PM
In Indiana today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., expressed bemusement at Sen. John McCain's nomination acceptance speech.
"I have to say, when John McCain says in his speech that he wants to reduce the rancor in Washington ... and I’m thinking, 'Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention?'" Obama asked.
"I mean, What? Were you not, were you not watching?" Obama continued. "Did they not get the memo?
"You know, there’s got to be some consistency in how you approach these things," Obama said, "There’s nothing wrong with a vigorous debate because the parties have very real differences. But when it starts getting personal, when you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy, then that’s not serving Democrats, that’s not serving Republicans, that’s not serving anybody and that’s the kind of politics we want to put to an end when I’m President of the United States."

McCain-Palin
49.7%
Obama-Biden
45.9%
Gallup daily
McCain 48%
Obama 45%
And this still doesn't reflect the full RNC bounce

craig
her speech was written by a bush speechwriter 3 weeks before she was picked...it was written for a man, and re-written for her...
she had nothing to do with it...
she's like a game show girl...hyping mccain and lavishing praise on him, while taking shots at others...he sits tere like a dirty old man checking her ass out...it's a bit creepy...
his wife is a beauty queen too..
he goes for those women of substance

btw: this project has been in the works since I lived there in the 80's, it's nothing new...
and some say won't be completed for 10 to 20 years...if ever...
there is 100 years of NG in the lower 48, much more accessible...much cheaper...

If Sarah Palin is "ready on day one" then why is she and the Republicans so afraid to have her face the "evil media" (who McCain called his base). I agree with indy_voterr, they afraid to have her stand on her own two feet. The McCain camps says she is telling us who she is "in her own words"... does that mean she wrote her own speech? I'd love to have heard her speech before they rewrote it. We might have gotten a glimpse of who Sarah Palin really is.

palin and the gas pipeline
anybody here actul know what this is?
no pipeline is built, nor has it been started...nowhere near being started...
my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong:
she gave 500mil to a CANADIAN company to incentivize them to build it...
that's socialism...paying a private, non-US for profit corporation to build something they will profit from...
if it made economic sense, they would do it on their own...it's not like the oil/gas companies have any shortage of $$$ or profit...but why spend their money when the government will ante up...

Wow Arthur!
You wrote "This woman is a bad person and anti-Christian."
You represent well what is so amazing to Republicans. The Party of Tolerance is so unbelievably intolerant of anyone who disagrees with them.
First of all, when you judge someone to be a "bad person" you are basically saying that YOU are the judge of good and evil -- that you are the source of truth in the unbounded universe. I don't really think you really intended to go there, but you did...
You have stated your contempt for certain religious ideas but then cast yourself in the role of being able to determine what is and what isn't Christian. They haven't got that figured out themselves, so I hardly think you do.
Insanity is a legal definition, not a psychological definition. I think you are trying to say that you don't find Palin to be rational, but what you actually said was that she should not be held legally accountable for her choices, due to an inability to differentiate between right and wrong.
When you judge her as brainless for not going before the press at this time, you are stubbornly refusing to look at the existence of alternatives -- as if the ONLY possible reason for this choice were her ineptitude -- not strategy.
How about looking at other people as complex human beings...? Then you won't be so utterly blind-sided should Palin meet the press and perform well. Maybe you could even wish her well...?

Nelle:
I haven't heard Palin complaining about the attacks against her. Republican voters may have complained about the attacks, but as far as I can see, Palin has been holding up under them very well.

I have 'faith', in a higher power and science...
unlike, apparently from reading here, most obama supporters, I am not a star-struck, islamic terrorist...
I want what's best for OUR Country...
anybody who truely believes in their heart AND mind that the earth was created 5000 years ago, and started with 2 people placed here by god, is insane...
the fact that she believes her religion (wetf it is, she's had 3 or 4)to be the only true one in this entire unbounded universe, is exclusionary (much like the repubs with minorites/gays/poor/etc.) and must be disheartening news to all the jews, muslims, bhudists, etc.
this woman is a bad person and is ANTI-Christian...she diametrially opposed to all its values...

I thought that "pitbulls with lipstick" not only could GIVE it but also could TAKE it! I was done with the Republican bully tactics at the last election. America cannot possibly have such a short memory. Sarah Palin is the "hanging chads" of this election. What a shame that this is what the political landscape of the last decade will be remembered by in the history books.

the mccain campaign will not allow palin to speak to the press...it was just stated by davis
anybody who thinks the earth is 5000 yrs old and the victim of a rape shouldn't have a choice in their own life, is a lunatic
she's a liar and apparently brainless...
I can't wait until she's interviewed without a teleprompter...
can you say 'stepford'?

You know what gets me...? How people impugn the motives of others and caricaturize them in the basest terms.
You may not like conservative ideas, for instance. But you hadn't even heard of Palin a few days ago, and suddenly she is evil incarnate. She's a "lunatic."
Have any of you taken a moment to check out why she votes the way she does...? What is the philosophy behind her decisions...? Maybe if you did you would learn that she is not motivated by the things you assume. And many Republicans would be surprised here as well....
Many here are quick to assume that Palin is stupid because she wasn't educated at Harvard, because she has lived in Alaska (which makes one stupid how...?) or because she isn't hitting the media yet -- but I think you will underestimate her at your peril.
Don't you think it would be better if Democrats and Republicans really looked inside themselves and admitted a few things...?
Like, do Republicans really WANT children to not have health care...? Seriously now. Do you really think that anyone wants children to suffer...? And if you do think that about other people, what does that say about you...?
How about being honest with yourselves? How about saying, "All people want children to grow up healthy and well fed. We disagree on the way to make that happen." Then you need not give yourselves heart failure by thinking someone like Palin is consummate evil and wants to starve your children.
Maybe you could work towards win/win instead of win/lose.

in the long run it doesn't matter...
obama, may or may not, help us
mccain won't and can't
the congress will be even more democratically controlled after this election...he will be stymied...
so the choice:
mccain, stalemate and 4 more years of the same with a 50/50 cance of him croaking and a lunatic taking over
or
obama...at least he'll be able to get some things done with the cooperation of congress...let's not forget how important that is...bush had a repub congress for 6 years, and STILL got nothing done...
honestly, it makes little difference, but I would like to see the possibility for improvement to have a chance

noooo, global warming isn't real not at all, listen to Sarah Palin, she said it isn't real, with ice shelves in the Arctic the size of Manhattan breaking off last week and Cat 4 hurricanes now a regular occurrence in the gulf why would anyone think global warming is real? ignore the problem like Bush has done, like John McCain would no doubt do as well. Obama wants to get straight to work dealing with this serious problem by creating new green energy jobs while combating the effects of this very real catastrophic condition, but what does Obama know.. kill the polar bears, kill the Alaskan wolves from a plane like a coward! pollute some more! give huge tax breaks to big oil and whatever you do don't end the war in Iraq, I mean what would Sarah Palin do? all of that and more! Vote for McCain and make the dream come true?

The Republicans whine and attack as if they are cornered. This is a well deserved panic, given that ordinary Americans have been victimized by that party for eight years: people who aren't rich, aren't lobbyists, and and don't work for oil companies, who have seen their incomes drop and their young people killed and maimed in a dishonest war. Enough.

in the last 8 tears we have become:
isolated
weaker
lost credibility
NK got nukes
Iran is closer
China holds the world pursestrings, and is willing to use the leverage
Russia is stronger, and controls europe via energy flow
we have lost close to 4500 good Americans, for what? fighting what dik cheney called a 'handful' of terrorists?
mission accomplished, war over in < 6 months and 50 bil$...
just keep stating the facts...
stay on point
let the repubs ignore the issues, and keep making personal attacks...
I have every confidence the American people will see thru this charade

All Democrats need to do is point to the absurdities and hypocrisy in Republicans. They are regular people...with their seven homes and $300,000 outfits...They are uniters not dividers....with the clearly partisan tone from the convention....That they are for country first.....but continue to support policies that gives American assets and jobs away....That they are reformers but have been part of Washington for 26 years and have been in charge for the last 8...That they support freedom and beat their chests about soldiers fighting that freedom but do everything they can to take that freedom away...The Republican changed long ago to the party of hypocrites, childlishness, and exalting mediocrity. Reagan had a message and could communicate the message. Republicans now have no message and would rather communicate imagery (such as Palin for VP)...

Zank,
So, where is McCain's credibility with Putin when he introduces his vice-president as experienced with Russian affairs because Alaska borders it? As for the victim card....don't be hypocritical....Republicans have already begun playing the victim card with Palin....poor young, mother being picked on b.s.
Posted by: indy_voter | Sep 7, 2008 8:22:22 AM
Obama whined when Hillary said anything about him, he whines now when Palin and McCain talk about him.
Poor Obama, the victim.
How does he think he is going to act in the Presidency when everyone is questioning every thing he does?
"Putin thinks I'm a Muslim. Boo-Hoo."
Posted by: Zank | Sep 7, 2008 8:02:50 AM
just reepat the message:
repub president for the last 8 years
repub congress the first 6
the war, 4000+ dead
600 bil (2 tril long term)
x00,000 dead civies
'Stan unravelling
no OBL
huge trade deficit
huge budget deficit
housing meltdown
market 11000 in 2000, 11000 in 2008
incomes going down, prices up
many, many repubs indicted & convicted..
the latest, stevens of AK
the repubs are their own worst enemy
just state the facts

diamond lou
the times obama mentioned mccain he was complementing him a few, and referencing his policies, NOT taking cheap shots...listen to the speach
obama DID call palin and congratulate her...the very next morning...
people, start thinking for yourselves instead of regurgitating what your favorite media source feeds you...
