Obama Hits McCain's New Ad Claiming Palin 'Stopped the Bridge to Nowhere'
September 08, 2008 4:16 PM
"They're starting to run an ad now saying she (Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin) opposed the Bridge to Nowhere," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said today in Flint, Mich.
Obama was referring to this new TV ad from the McCain campaign, titled "Mavericks," which states that Palin "stopped the Bridge to Nowhere."
"Well, now, let’s get the facts clear here," Obama said. "When she was mayor, she hired a Washington lobbyist to get earmarks -- pork barrel spending –- all the things that John McCain says is bad, she lobbied to get! And got a whole lot of it. When it came to the Bridge to Nowhere, she was for it until everybody started raising a fuss about it, and she started running for governor, and then, suddenly, she was against it!
"You remember that?" Obama asked the Flinters. "'For it before you were against it'? I mean you can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just recreate yourself. You can’t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren’t stupid."
Palin's position on the "Bridge to Nowhere" is far more complicated than McCain's TV ad makes it seem.
Obama's take on it isn't quite accurate, but according to Politifact, it comes pretty close.
Palin originally was a supporter of the Bridge while she ran for governor in 2006.
“The money that’s been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done,” Palin said then, according to a story in the Ketchikan Daily News. “This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper.
“I think we’re going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project,” she told the audience.
The political winds began to shift, however, and as Politifact notes after Palin was elected governor, Congress began to divert funding for the bridge to other projects, leaving Alaska $329 million short in funding. "Lois Epstein, director of the Alaska Transportation Priorities Project, which opposed funding for the Gravina bridge, said while it’s true that Palin formally put an end to the project, 'It wasn’t really a bold move when she did it.' ... Keith Ashdown, a spokesman for Taxpayers for Common Sense, the government watchdog that first drew attention to the project, believes Palin has 'hyperinflated her role' in killing the project. She put the final stake in the project,' Ashdown said. 'But there was already tremendous momentum for the project to be scrapped. She gets credit for saying that they were not to go forward with the bridge, but it was at death’s door.'"

Obama protests if someone else other than him changes their position, this from a guy that couldn't take a position over 130 in IL...

WHA!!!! The liberal media!!! I am crying my eyes out at how liberal they are!!!
Hmmm... but what I do wonder is why the liberal media gives John McCain a free pass on everything. What I do wonder about them is why they are intimidated by the McCain campaign, who dictates his and his lying running mates message.
Republicans don't even know what their own values are. I can say it for them though: Republican value voters destroy our country. You vote for idiots because of your precious "values" and the rest of the country suffers as a result. A hockey mom is more important to you than actual issues. The Republicans play you like a violin and you buy the same stale brand every time. Then what happens? You watch as Republican leaders send your children to war. You watch as your best economic interests go down the toilet. Then what do you do to fix it? You vote for another idiot because they share your "values!" Maybe you should start actually paying attention to the issues and abandon this notion that somehow a politician that consistently lies to you and really has no interest in your well being, actually shares your values.

to say that she merely changed her mind through educational rigor is an absurd intellectual dishonesty. but it strikes at why some folks call Obama a flip flopper but call Palin a liar - its because Obama flip flops and Palin lies...neither is good but one thing is worse. Obama doesn't deny the existence of his previous positions - he doesn't deny facts, he simply changed his mind (usually with a pretty thorough explanation as to why, so even if you disagree with his "why", hard to call it a lie when he's not denying anything), while Palin's responses are very different - she makes claims of pure fact about past events; that she never held those positions, never made those statements, gives us the impression that she actually "sold" the plane on ebay, was never involved with the Alaskan independance movement, that she never accepted any earmmarks, didn't play that earmark game at all b/c she was above it, didn't tolerate lobbyists, and always, always opposed the bridge to nowhere...inspite of the 27MM she lobbied for and got for her home town, except for the lobbyists she hired, and except for the support of the bridge she openly offered. That's not just changing your mind, that's deceiving and concealing the original facts and events - that's lying. But then I guess her ease with this type of intellectual dishonesty explains why she still believes in abstinence only education, why she doesn't believe in evolution, and why she thinks facts and truth are the pesky musings of those annoying hyper elite people in those big cities she hears about. She didn't change her mind after getting educated on the topics. On some things like the bridge to nowhere, she changed her mind after her position became unpopular, on other things she just changed the facts to suit her.
Can't wait for the debates

She changed her opinion after learning the facts, that's a good thing.
Why is it when Obama changes his mind/opinion on a issue the liberal bias media calls it a flip-flop but when the republicans flip-flop they call it a lie?
Are these Obama Flip-Flops or Lies:
Rev Wright - I can no more disown him than I can the black community. Then a month later he disowned both Rev Wright and his church.
Illegal immigration - First he opposed cracking down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants, now he supports it.
Marijuana - First he supported the decriminalization of marijuana now he opposes it.
Cuba Embargo - First he said it as "to end the embargo with Cuba" now he wants to continue it.
Public Financing - Obama became the first candidate to reject public financing for the general election after earlier promises to accept it.
Gun Control - now favors an individual's right to own a gun.

Come on, how is it desperate to point out the lies of the other side, especially as this particular issue is central to why McCain picked Palin in the first place?
McCain chose Palin on the basis of her supposed positions against pork, and now we're finding out that she was up to ears in it. McCain was the desperate one. He need a game changer. Didn't vet her well enough, and now the truth is slowly starting to emerge.

Obama and his media buddies are desperate.
Obama and co. are now reduced to equivocating about a politician that plays politics better than they do. I would laugh it it wasn't so pathetic.

If republicans are elected in nov then U.S will be on path of bridge to nowhere.
there is no political wisdom among voters in u.s.
more wars more fear mongering. more basic rights taken away in the name of security

Before everyone gets to hypo about it. There are tons of bridges to nowhere. San Padre Island has a bridge just for beach resorts, Key West has a very very long bridge to it aqain just for a resort town. I bet you can find a road or two to nowhere as well, do you want me to find them. The good old US of A ignored Alaska from 1865 until Ted Stevens and Don Young starting getting infra structure earmarks. Oh I forget you did need to develop some things for your protection during WWII. Talk about a road to nowhere the ALCAN. And our pipeline goes from shore to shore. Get off it. Sarah did do something for my family she has helped me meet my energy bills non of the other three have done more then talk. She has gotten a pipeline started (the first thing to getting it done is the contract by the way), which means she has actually done something for you all ,too. None of the other three have done more then talk. Jake your confused.

The Obama supporters reject as disengenuous McCain's claim that he and Palin are the reformers and are best suited for those who want change. The Obama people don't understand that McCain and Palin have a long history of reform and change. McCain once said that he did not want Roe v Wade overruled but that didn't appeal to the right wing fringe whose support he needed to win so he CHANGED his position. For the same reason he CHANGED his opinion about the agents of intolerance. He CHANGED his position on campaign finance reform. He CHANGED his position on immigration. He CHANGED his position on the Bush tax cuts. As for Palin, in her very first appearance as the VP nominee she tried to CHANGE history by telling the American people that she told congress no thank you to the bridge to nowhere even though that isn't true. Believe them when they tell you that they favor CHANGE - just recognize it for what it really is.

First of all i'm all for OBAMA, I hope the image of a woman doesn't sway the political pull we women have in this election. It's silly of McCain to think we lack intelligence and would vote for someone solely on their race and gender. It's really diffucult to believe that these candidates will come through and be able to accomplish everything on their platform, it's not a one person show. So then what can we base our vote on, personally I base mine on the essence of the human. It's a difficult thing to do but we just have to use our best judgment of a person's character. PJ sometimes we need to take our own advice, first of all I am a 30 something year old woman, who is a member of a pentecostal congregation. I'm a solid person with a strong BIBLICAL foundation. Please don't call people racist and say racist things yourself, it only undermines the very valid points you make. I'm not trying to be self-righteous, but if we can't live it, then why preach it? TV does not portray pentecostals accurately, at least not a true pentecost biblical speaking. Unfortunately for all of us whatever race, gender or religion you may belong to, their will always be wannabe's out there who real don't know or care about what they stand for, and those of us who are true and real get mocked for it.

This story about the lie being repeated by McCain and Palin needs to be front page news. It's just ridiculous that a VP nominee who we know little about is feeding us an absolute lie as the little that she does tell us.
And to the racist and xenophobes talking about Obama's religion. Stop listening to Rush and look at the FACT that Palin is a Pentecostal. These scary folks speak in tongues, pass out and otherwise display mental illness as a means of praising God. Drink the Palin Kool-Aid if you like but know the poison you drink.

In my opinion, McCain's choice of Palin shows him to be incompetent and reckless. McCain had only met with Palin one time before he chose her to be his running mate. His staff had not vetted her. And yet he chose her to be a 72-76 year old heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States of America. McCain's poor judgement appears to mirror that of Bush's. McCain and Palin continue to give big oil ownership of America, your wallet, and eventually your mortgage. Not to mention the fact that McCain and conservative republicans have trampled upon the Constitution of the United States vehemently, (not that Americans really care about small details like that - our main concern is being able to afford gas right now.)

And when you get through asking him for all of that, why don't you ask similar questions of McCain and Ms. Palin?
Oh, that's right, she doesn't answer
questions from the press...
And John doesn't let the press ride on the "straight talk express" anymore...
Hmmm...

Colonel, Palin had nothing to do with the $1400 to Alaskans, that comes from oil revenues and has for more years than she has been in politics. Every year from $900 to 1400 is given to individuals from the oil fund, Palin or any other governor has nothing to do with giving that money out.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with Senator Obama on that point... at least 51% of Americans are stupid. At least.

Sen. Barack Obama, perhaps giving America a preview of priorities he would pursue if elected president, is rejoicing over the Senate committee passage of a plan that could end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars in an attempt to reduce poverty in other nations.
The bill, called the Global Poverty Act, is the type of legislation, "We can – and must – make … a priority," said Obama, a co-sponsor. [...]

Correction: Global Poverty Act is S.2433. (Doesn't anyone check these things?)

This misses the point and so does Obama. Palin said at least twice that she told "Congress" no thank you to the bridge to nowhere, suggesting that she said np thank you to the money. That's false. Alaska received the money from the original bill but removed the earmark. Alaska kept the money so she didn't say no thank you to Congress. It just isn't true. She just said no when it came to spending some of Alaska's money for the bridge. Her remarks are offensive. By the way, on Palin's watch Alaska did keep more than $20 million earmarked for the Gravina Island (less than 100 inhabitants) road that's been constructed even though the road serves no purpose since it was suppose to connect to the bridge.
