Obama Hits McCain's New Ad Claiming Palin 'Stopped the Bridge to Nowhere'

September 08, 2008 4:16 PM

"They're starting to run an ad now saying she (Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin) opposed the Bridge to Nowhere," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said today in Flint, Mich.

Obama was referring to this new TV ad from the McCain campaign, titled "Mavericks," which states that Palin "stopped the Bridge to Nowhere."

"Well, now, let’s get the facts clear here," Obama said. "When she was mayor, she hired a Washington lobbyist to get earmarks -- pork barrel spending –- all the things that John McCain says is bad, she lobbied to get! And got a whole lot of it. When it came to the Bridge to Nowhere, she was for it until everybody started raising a fuss about it, and she started running for governor, and then, suddenly, she was against it!

"You remember that?" Obama asked the Flinters. "'For it before you were against it'? I mean you can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just recreate yourself. You can’t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren’t stupid."

Palin's position on the "Bridge to Nowhere" is far more complicated than McCain's TV ad makes it seem.

Obama's take on it isn't quite accurate, but according to Politifact, it comes pretty close.

Palin originally was a supporter of the Bridge while she ran for governor in 2006.

“The money that’s been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done,” Palin said then, according to a story in the Ketchikan Daily News. “This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper.

“I think we’re going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project,” she told the audience.

The political winds began to shift, however, and as Politifact notes after Palin was elected governor, Congress began to divert funding for the bridge to other projects, leaving Alaska $329 million short in funding. "Lois Epstein, director of the Alaska Transportation Priorities Project, which opposed funding for the Gravina bridge, said while it’s true that Palin formally put an end to the project, 'It wasn’t really a bold move when she did it.' ... Keith Ashdown, a spokesman for Taxpayers for Common Sense, the government watchdog that first drew attention to the project, believes Palin has 'hyperinflated her role' in killing the project. She put the final stake in the project,' Ashdown said. 'But there was already tremendous momentum for the project to be scrapped. She gets credit for saying that they were not to go forward with the bridge, but it was at death’s door.'"

Your first premise is not logical. That Bush & Cheney endorsed Palin means that they don’t endorse Obama or Barr.
And I would rather have no change, than the change Obama would bring (S.2248 = $850Bn closer to global communism).
Obama’s not using Bush’s speechwriters? What is your point? Obama has the single greatest liberal voting record in the Senate. Why would he use Bush’s speechwriters?
Bottom line: We had the lowest unemployment record in history and a booming economy until the Democrats took control of Congress. And please don’t feign concern for service members – been there, done that, seen your type before.
By the way: The House and Senate intel committees had the same information Bush had. Why is it only Bush that lied?

She was lying about her stance on the Bridge to Nowhere. She knows it and yet repeats it endlessly. Now I just have to figure out if that's better than not knowing the relationship between the government and FreddieMac and FannieMae.

Actually vote4change, I do like the way "things has been" for the most part. There are some changes I would like to see but not a total change in a messed up direction. I love America!

j munroe: Here's two concrete reasons to vote for Obama. 1. Bush & Cheney just endorsed Palin. Means - NO CHANGE

2. Obama's not using Bush's speechwriters to tell him what to do say but Palin is.

Bottom line, if you like the way things has been for the last 8 years, and if you don't care that Bush lied about the Iraq which lead to the death of over 4000 servicemembers than McCain/Palin are the ones for you. Enough said.

Obillion in pork.

Rhetoric and hyperbole. Someone please just give me a concrete reason to vote for Obama. At least the neighbor was honest when she said, because he makes her feel good.
But everywhere else I look, rhetoric and hyperbole. Then I looked up S.2248, Obama’s Global Poverty Act bill, that transfers 0.7% of our GDP directly to the UN…

JPT - why not report Obama's and Biden's stance on the "Bridge to Nowhere"? At least Palin came to the right conclusion. Obama on the other hand continues to be the ultimate hypocrite.

Talking about Judgement of VP candidates. I took following from Wikipedia about Joe Biden:

1. Joe Biden stated in 2002 that Saddam Hussein was a threat to national security, and that there was no option but to eliminate that threat

2. In October 2002, Biden voted in favor of the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq, justifying the Iraq War.

So, Question for Mr. Obama: Did Mr. Biden invent himself to join him?

Looking at the ad closely, you'll see that the headlines are dated for McCain and more recent for Palin.

On McCain being a maverick: 2003 & 2004

On Palin being a maverick: December 2007 and Aug. 30, 2008.

Palin supported the bridge to nowhere when she ran for Governor in 2006.

Except for wanting to permit prescription drugs from Canada in 2007, McCain hasn't been much of a maverick.

And picking Palin over Lieberman, who he really wanted for VP, makes me think he is not his own man.

as always, republicans talk a big game and are zero delivering. yap yell bag. like running for a fraternity.

answer this right-wing nuts: we've $1 trillion debt on books now. $9 trillion in 10 years if mccain doubles down on w's tax cuts (borrowed from china with interest). if not, we 'just' have a $4 trillion hole with w in 10 years.

so far mccain has identified $18 *billion* in cuts, all from the infamous earmarks. $1 trillion - $18 billion = squat. basic math folks.

republican politics = squat.

get back to reality. enough already.

Can it be that Obama is calling FOUL. He, the DNC and the MSM have managed to cover up/explain/attack anyone for his entire campaign.

The big issue for Obama is to show us the following.

Obams's Occidental College records
Obama's Columbia College records
Obama's Columbia Thesis paper
Obama's Harvard College records
Obama's Selective Service Registration
Obama's Medical records
Obama's Illinois State Senate records
A certified copy of Obama’s Original Birth Certificate
Obama's embossed, signed paper Certification of Live Birth
Any Obama Harvard Law Review articles that were published (I have found one.)
Obama's University of Chicago scholarly articles or publications.

What was Obama's religion before he became a Christian??

Mr. Obama is being considered for the highest job in America, and he should provide the above as if he would be interviewing for that position in Corporate Amercian.

It is sad when the members of his OWN PARTY can not list his accomplishments, either in the State government or now as a Senator. They say it does not matter about the above because he graduated in the top 10% of his Harvard Law Class.

Why is the "new" Republican slogan "Change"?

Why are Republicans scrambling for "celebrity" spotlight with Palin?

Why are Republicans hiding Palin from the press?

Why are Republicans forced to commit to lies to attack Obama (and use his middle name as some symbolic evil) about his religion, name, birthright, etc.?

Desperation anyone?

Haven;t you people had enough of George Bush for 8 years, now you want McBush and that Idiot thats against everything for four more years. When are you going to learn, give Obama a chance.Enough of the failed policies, war etc that was Bush, the worst president ever.

I would imagine that all or most of these questions that are being bounced back and forth here regarding that infamous bridge will be posed by Charlie Gibson in his upcoming interview.

I would imagine the ratings for this interview with Gibson will be as high as for her speech at the Convention.

Brilliant marketing strategy on behalf of the GOP, I have to hand it to them.

It's too bad that all of the questions asked on these blogs regarding OBAMA are NEVER asked in any of the millions of interviews he gives to everyone ad nauseum......

So is it true that Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the "Bridge to Nowhere" and Sarah Palin didn't?

Posted by: jeremiah | Sep 8, 2008 5:19:35 PM

Clueless on Iraq

In a 2007 interview with Alaska Business Monthly, she said: "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe. Every life lost is such a tragedy. I am very, very proud of the troops we have in Alaska, those fighting overseas for our freedoms, and the families here who are making so many sacrifice

why can't people see that billions spent on an illegal war is an ACTUAL tax HIKE!??? wake up people... vote for Obama!

Perhaps Trapper could give the entire story now that Alaska is front and center in the news again, it is a good time to catch up on a favorite story, The Bridge to Nowhere, using the Washington Post US Congress Votes Database.

Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere), she eventually killed the project, chosing to spend Federal money on other infrasturcture programs.

However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

Sen. McCain did not vote on the Coburn Amendment, though he is on record as opposing the Ketchikan bridge earmark.

JS: perhaps you can provide some link to this "gazebo" story. Prove to us this is true.

Jake Tapper neglected to include the information that That's what Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008. So, whatever small part Palin played in the cancellation of the bridge project (and it was a very small one, i.e., the very last nail in the coffin, D.B.A. -- Dead Before Arrival), she didn't reject the free hundreds of millions of dollars of our money that went to her state for a project that didn't get built.
