Obama on Letterman: If That's What I'd Meant, Palin Would Be the Lipstick, ‘McCain's Failed Policies’ the Pig

September 10, 2008 5:56 PM

In an interview on the "Late Show with David Letterman" to air later tonight, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., answers some questions on the lipstick controversy.

Letterman asks Obama if he still thinks the Republicans are overreacting to his comments last night.

"Look this is ... sort of silly season in politics –- not that there’s a non-silly season in politics," Obama says. "But it gets sillier, and it’s a common expression, at least in Illinois, I don’t know about New York City, I don’t know where you guys put lipstick on here."

To audience laughter, Obama says, "In Illinois, the expression connotes the idea that if you have a bad idea -- in this case, I was talking about John McCain’s economic plans -- that just calling them change, calling it something different doesn’t make it better. Hence, lipstick on a pig is still a pig."

"What I like about this scenario is because they -– the Republicans -- demanded an apology," Letterman says, "so that means there had been a meeting at some point somewhere along the line (of) they got together and said, 'You know what? He called our vice presidential candidate a pig.' Well, that seems pretty unlikely, doesn’t it?"

"It does," agrees Obama. "Keep in mind that, technically had I meant it this way –- she would be the lipstick!"

The audience laughs, but Letterman is confused.

"You are way ahead of me," says the late night host.

"The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig," Obama says. "I mean, just following the logic of this illogical situation."

At another point, Letterman asks Obama, "Have you ever actually put lipstick on a pig?"

"The answer would be no," Obama responds. "But I think it might be fun to try."

The lipstick on a pig is an expression. There's a book by the same title. Obama didn't call Palin a pig, he called McCain's policy the pig. McCain used the same expression about Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan. And it's on tape. Do some research, watch some news. Palin needs to be scrutinized. No one knows anything about her. Don't think for one minute that the republican machine hasn't been digging into Obama and Biden. They all do it. We know all there is to know about them. Now it's her turn. This trying to insult the American voter with these stupid comebacks and Comercials that are flat out lies is disgusting. It makes me think she has something more to hide besides her ultra conservitive views. I for one want to know something about her. What does she stand for? What does she believe? What are her politics. She's made the same speech, which was written for her, at every stop before returning to Alaska. Bring on the scrutiny.

Hey, Tundra Digger, that story about the Jay-Z track was debunked within 48 hours of your talking points distributor making it up from whole cloth.

Posted by: Blue Raven | Sep 11, 2008 5:18:26 PM

So OBama gets to distract from his blaming American victims for being victimized by another double entendre "don't be so sensitive" crapload.

Remember back in January, the New York Times reported:

As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” was blaring.

Oh, Oooooops, just a coincidence again. Axelrod and Obama are SICK individuals.

Now they're calling on the Clintons for help. Hillary tried to tell us, she was afterall wearing PRISONER orange at her DNC speech. Obama played "Addicted To Love" as Bill Clinton exited the stage. They all do this, and it's called PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY it gets attention and it distracts from more disastrous emphasis.

Like Obama's associations with terrorists and all the data pointing to his being cultivated and funded by them for DECADES.

When O'Reilly pointed these associations out all Obama could say is "what can you say?"

I am a republican leaning to Democrat this time. I am so disgusted how Mccain and Palin conduct their campaign. I would like to hear their solutions to our present problems. What people get are senseless back and forth accusations. Enough is enough. I agree with Obama.

Ohg Rea Tone Did you see how meaningfully McCain cradled the roses a relative of a 9-11 victim gave him, whereas Obama's let his dangle drooped from his hand ready to hand them off to an aid. Did you know OBama totally lied to you and abc and the world about his relationship with Bill Ayers? Totally lied, completely lied, he's hiding the real terrorist-affiliated Obama and ABC is so in the tank for him the don't vet him...they WANT a terrorist in the White House. Obama's latest read was The Post American World, he's been photog'ed with it several times. I'd like McCain with a grumpy temperament in a wheelchair any day compared to terrorist Obama. Did you see the way Obama told off that poor old lady who asked him what he'd do about terrorists? He never did answer her, just belittled her.

Gee for some reason this must've been accidentally removed.

So Obama's got his army of shiny shoed lawyers in Alaska digging up anything they can find on Pistol Packin' No-Abortion Palin. Considering she nixed the good 'ol boy network, she's earned some enemies, who were also enemies of the American people and Alaskans, the corruptoids...I'm sure they'll feel right at home with those types.

Obama has a new book: "Plausible Deniability, Media Manipulation, Preemptive Diversion and Loaded Nuance for Cowards and Losers"

How do you think it will sell?
Just kidding of course. Sort of.

This whole PIG thing was a simple diversionary tactic to distract from Obama's having BLAMED THE USA FOR 9-11.

Oh, yes he did. Read the Canadian article, it's no secret, he's just one step shy of Wright. It's better to own the media position in a sexist manner than to be tied to his terrorist mentors. OBama has been on the TEAT OF TERRORISTS FOR DECADES. He's been funded and cultivated by the likes of Odinga, Ayers, al Mansour and Farrakhan. Obama out and out LIED about his relationship with Ayers, yet the media is focused on the Harper Valley PTA - mayor- governor up north.

Zero vetting of Obama in Chicago and REzko and Ayers and Odinga and Wright, but troop-haulers full of zitfaced Obamacons descend on Wasilla.

They always warned you they'd take down America from WITHIN the government.

How hypocric OB!! He started lipstic from Palin's speech. And blaimed on McCain and he is the man obove such a chat. He brought up lipstic story again and again, he changed face and said "enough is enough, I don't care what they said". It was so disgusting. Bill O, you said he wasn't talking about Palin becouse he is so smart and intellegent?????? Don't be fooled by BO. You think you are fare, but you were navi. OB is not like you, Bill. He tried this lipstic live on and on, so he can pretend with well managed face expression, saying McCain don't talke about issue, only wining. But he didn't talked about any issue at all, just blame Rep. I thought anyway it is over. And yet, look! what he is saying to David about again - Lipstic Palin on pig McCain? He doesn't want to die this story. OB, you have to stop this kind of cheap shot!! Be realistic for citizen. PLEASE... If you don't have nothing to talk, just be silence.

As an American women with a voting card I have never been so insulted as by the McCain/Palin campaign tactics pointed at women.

He congratulates himself for selecting a woman and then treats her in the most demeaning fashion. She has to be hidden from the public? She's an unknown and deserves to be vetted in detail since her job means she could end up as president. The remark about limiting access to only those who show her proper deference?

He reminds me of the nightly news where we see a gunman grab and woman and/or child to deflect the police from shooting them down. He's grabbed Palin and we are being told repeatedly about her children, about her decision to give birth to a Down's Syndrome child. But God forbid we get discussions on how Palin might handle people with diverse religious and political beliefs.

We have some intractable problems that must be tackled. If she isn't good enough to stand on her own two feet like his behavior seems to be saying then why should anybody consider this other then a cynical political ploy!

Obama has nothing to do with keeping this in the media. You do by asking for more on it. McCain didn't vet her and now the media is doing the job it would have done had she had any national experience or been known. Any candidate that runs for office needs to be scrutinized...the world will do it for us if we don't. How do we look to the rest of the world?
This Republican has seen the error of her ways and is voting for Obama.

Sarah is the one who brought up the lipstick in the first place. Being from the sticks I guess they don't use analogies there. It had nothing to do with pigs or lipstick it's she's another GW as is McCain no matter how you slice it.

I'm sorry Pete J but I just had the best laugh out loud moment I've had in a while.

You've put my feelings to words so well!

Posted by: Citizen Voter | Sep 11, 2008 3:14:04 PM

Since Sarah took offense to the lipstick on a pig analogy that is just a common one it must have hit home. They used the same comment when speaking to Hilary and I guess she didn't get her feelings hurt or cry. Come on what is she going to do if world leaders criticize her...waa waa all the way home.

Obama is the one keeping this story in the media - McCain issued a statement days ago and that was the last they spoke of it - Obama keeps bringing it up in a highly profiled way (on Letterman, in speeches, etc.) to distract voters from the key issue in this election are we ready to a) give up on our current system and usher in a bold new socialist agenda ... or do we b) reform our current system and take steps to ensure that the government does not get any bigger or more powerful. That's the one issue that everyone should focus on right now.

A few disclosures first: I am an undeclared independent, I am white, I do have a thinking brain (apparently it now puts me in the disadvantaged category)

Ok, here we go. From what I am seeing in the press, the majority of Americans have absolutely lost their minds! The past two presidential elections were decided on the basis of one side saying the other side is scum to which the other side responded by saying oh yeah but you are bigger scum. Look what we got out of that. Instead of each one of us asking whether we are satisfied with how things are going, we are hell bent on doing the same thing AGAIN...win, win, win BASH THE HECK OUT THE OTHER SIDE, makes me feel good, and it sure has worked before. Insanity pure and simple. The meaning of lipstick on a pig is really going to keep me from losing my house, make oil prices lower, stop me from losing my job, etc., etc. Insanity really. Because I am disadvantaged by having a thinking brain someone is sure to come on here and bash me for using it. It is the thing to do. If you have gotten this far reading, I can just see you waiting to see which side I take to decide whether to jump up with your club and bash or not. As I said before, I am an independent. So far both sides are causing me to puke. And guess what? The damn terrorists were right, we have been and will continue to destroy OURSELVES. They are laughing at us...they are thinking stupid Americans, they have A-bombs, jets, tanks, missiles etc. etc. going for them but stupidity is overpowering everything they are doing and they don't even realize it. But so what...BASH, BASH, BASH as long as the right side WINS, WINS, WINS...it is all that matters. Hardly anyone really cares what happens AFTER the election. The last two such elections proves it. Americans put an idiot in the White House who then proceeded to start wrecking it...and he was then re-elected so he could finish the project! Insanity pure and simple. Now a moment of choice is coming upon the country which could well determine its very survival and lipstick on a pig is the basis upon which it could be decided. This country could actually CHOOSE to continue the same policies that have been destroying it for eight years! My dear God, take me now, take me now...my working brain affliction is becoming just too much to bear.

As a observer from a far off land (Canada)I can say that the fact that you people voted for GWB (twice) was kinda pathetic - I mean really that boy wasn't bright. Now I am relived to say you will be voting for a candidate who was powerless to take on the coruption of the Illinos political system, voted "present" for most of the time there, attended a racist church or 20+ years, bought his first house with the help of Tony Rezko, was friends with William Ayres, his mentor was Rev. Wright, most questions are above his pay grade, makes TV interviewers feel tingles up their legs, took 3 interviews to get the Russia/Georgia conflict correct, he will very well sit down with supporters of 9/11 to find some middle ground, supporters (1 million on his speed dial)are college students (same ones who welcomed leader of Iran to come hear and spit in your face)- Obama is apparently the only likeable lawyer in the WORLD....and anyone who votes for him is vote to go from the frying pan into the fire.

Good luck America

ALL those who are criticising Obama for the 'lipstick' phrase- OBVIOUSLY are as CLOSE Minded as all the other repubs out there!
If you cant SEE and PERCEIVE the actual reference to the PIG and LIPSTICK and Obama's humorous analogy on Letterman- YOU DONT GET 'CHANGE' - YOU DONT GET IT !!!- this kind of ignorance is going to cost this country its DREAM!!

Posted by: tk | Sep 11, 2008 2:09:19 PM

Anyone trying to make more of this than the simple analogy that it is....is wasting everyones time. And that alone is suspect. Why try and distract from the important....unless you are a coward like Carl Rove....and John Mcshame.

"This guy is the most scripted politician around..this was planned."
-----
Of COURSE it was planned -- if you the tape, you can hear The One laugh a little, under his breath, just BEFORE he looses the "zinger".

Obama was arrogant, defiant, unapologetic and disrespectful on the David Letterman show. He was most definitely referring to Palin / McCain with the lipstick / fish comment and he sure enjoyed the applause over this very distasteful, repulsive joke. He is obviously jealous of the Republican's rise in the polls and desperate! He has a real issue with powerful women. He mistreated Hillary Clinton as well. Obama is full of empty words and has little experience. He is not ready to lead this country but he is obviously ready to smear. He will keep this country divided. Palin and McCain both have proven records of bipartisanship and will unite America.

Posted by: Ashleigh | Sep 11, 2008 1:53:21 PM

Suppose we could only READ about a candidate's positions. We're not able to see or hear the candidates speak. No pictures either.

You would be forced to consider only the ISSUES. NOT what the candidates look or sound like. Would the race STILL be this close?

Would Palin still be the best choice for women? Would McCain still be the best choice for the economy?
