Obama on the Need for Habeas Corpus: Distinguishing Between 'Barack, the Bomb-Thrower' and 'Barack, the Guy Running for President'
September 08, 2008 7:30 PM
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- A fired-up Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took on his opponents -- "these people," he said incredulously, in a familiar refrain -- for shamelessness and dishonesty.
"I have said repeatedly that there should be no contradiction between keeping America safe and secure and respecting our Constitution," Obama said. "During the Republican convention, you remember during the Republican convention, one of them, I don’t know if it was Rudy or Palin ... they said, ‘Well, ya know, Sen. Obama is less interested in protecting you from terrorists than ... reading them their rights.’"
(It was Palin, who said "Al Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America -- he's worried that someone won't read them their rights?")
"Now, let me say this," Obama continued, "first of all, you don’t even get to read them their rights until you catch them. So, I don’t know what, they should spend more time trying to catch Osama bin Laden and we can worry about the next steps later. Hah! I mean, seriously! These folks.
"Catch ‘em first!"
Obama said his position on this "has always been clear. It has always been clear. If you’ve got a terrorist, take ‘em out. Take ‘em out. Anybody who was involved in 9/11 –- take ‘em out."
But, the former constitutional law professor argued, "What I have also said is this: that when you suspend habeas corpus -- which has been a principle, dating before even our country, it’s the foundation of Anglo-American law -- which says, very simply, if the government grabs you, then you have the right to at least ask, 'Why was I grabbed?' and say, 'Maybe you’ve got the wrong person.'
"The reason you have that safeguard," he said, "is because we don't always have the right person. We don’t always catch the right person. We may think this is Mohammed the terrorist, it might be Mohammed the cab driver. You may think it’s Barack the bomb thrower, but it might be Barack the guy running for president.
"The reason that you have this principle is not to be soft on terrorism, it’s because that’s who we are," Obama said as the crowd rose to its feet, applauding. "That’s what we’re protecting. Don’t mock the Constitution! Don’t make fun of it! Don’t suggest that it’s un-American to abide by what the founding fathers set up! It’s worked pretty well for over 200 years!
"These people!" Obama said.
Obama also mocked the new TV ad put out by the McCain campaign claiming that Gov. Sarah Palin "stopped the Bridge to Nowhere."
"I gotta admit these folks are shameless," Obama said, "because the record is indisputable," he said, describing how Palin had originally supported the project.
"I wouldn’t do that," Obama said. "I mean, I'm not perfect --"
"Yes, you are!" shouted a woman in the crowd.
"No, no, no, no," Obama said. "Talk to Michelle, she’ll tell you. But what I'm not going to do, I'm not going to describe in an ad that I did something that is opposite of what I did."

Folks, no matter who gets elected the U.S. taxpayer gets it stuck in his ear. If you really want change, vote out all incumbents, term limits on house members to 6 years, Senators to eight years,no retirements (they make $175,000/yr.), no health ins. for life, same Social security as we have, no per-diems, no franking priveleges and a flat tax! Quick, name 5 politician that went bankrupt. Now, how many millionairs in Congress?

Surely you are not suggesting that the Bush tax cuts that McCain wants to augment and apply permanently are based upon a flat tax model? 'Cause I would check that....

"1. Barack has explained that whats at state here is to important to wait! I except that!"
Suckers for used-car salesmen with bad spelling habits are prime Obama voters.
"2. He hasnt change on guns or abortion... Ill give you fisa he did change on that! "
Obama is an extremist gun-grabber and a pro-abortion extremist who voted against a bill protecting infants from infanticide.
Face it, Obama is an extremist.

"I am for nuclear technology (and unlike our current president, can pronounce it), and will tolerate some off-shore drilling. But this cannot resolve the situation long-term."
Sure it can. Nuclear provides 70% of the electricity in France. If we used it to that extent in the US, and used more natural gas for transportation, *and* utilized the Saudi sized shale oil reserves in Colorado plus offshore drilling, we could cut CO2 in half via nuclear and cut foreign oil imports in half via more domestic supply and alternative fuels.

"How is Obama any more "Socialist" than FDR? FDR gave you all that your parents had."
Hey, spoken like a socialist! What is this guff about FDR giving our parents stuff? My parents like most parents, got what they got through their own hard work. FDR gave them and us nothing. It came, all of it, 100% of it, from the taxpayers and the people. All FDR did was lengthen the Great Depression (see "FDR's Folly") through his bad policies that destroyed farm products, etc. and pack the Supreme Court so the courts would rule based on politics instead of the Constitution. (The court in 1934 and 1935 declared his socialistic New Deal programs like the NRA Unconstitutional, and in 1937 he tried to pack the supreme court to get around it). FDR's jailing of Japanese citizens makes him the most anti-Constitutional President we had.
If Obama is going to follow those footsteps, lets not follow him there.

"Excerpt fom Susan Eisenhower speech at the Democrat National Convention.

Well, that woman sure is an idiot.
Obama lacks the experience, lacks the judgment, lacks the accomplishments, lacks the decisiveness, and has been wrong on Iraq and most issues, and shows through his many gaffes and bad judgment in people (like Rev Wright and Bill Ayers) that he's not qualified to lead. Oh, but he has the 'energy' ... Are we electing a jock for president?

"So let me say clearly what I do want: for the wealthy (and the rich) to pay THE SAME proportion of their income in tax that I do"
This is a great principle. The same rate for everyone. IT'S CALL THE FLAT TAX.
Republicans have favored a flatter, fairer tax rate system but the Democrats want more income redistribution and keep wanting to jack up tax rates. Its bad for investors, business, and the economy.
Posted by: Travis Monitor | Sep 9, 2008 10:13:24 PM
OK, one last point (I'm still at work and looking for diversion): my suggestion that I wanted a "reasonable tax burden" has attracted slurs that I'm either a wastrel or wanting society to assume expenses for my lavish lifestyle. So let me say clearly what I do want: for the wealthy (and the rich) to pay THE SAME proportion of their income in tax that I do; no more, no less. For the same health care system that Congress enjoys--no more, no less. For gas prices (and food prices, a consequence of gas) to not be fixed above $4 a gallon when companies like BP and Exxon are reporting record profits for their stockholders. I don't want a free ride. I want an equitable distribution: no more, no less.

Interesting how Dems keep throwing President's approval rating of 30% in, but there is total silence on the Dems' Congress' 10% approval rating.
Selective hearing, vision, etc.
Worry about what super Pelosi and Reid had accomplished in 1 year (absolutely nothing).
Obama has NO chance now, thank God.

Here's what you folks don't get about McCain's tax plan. He will cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans and leave out 100,000,000 middle class folks. The well off folks won't be paying higher capital gains taxes becuase they will buy Muni bonds which are tax exempt and provide income. So they will make even more more. So There is no doubt that McCain is NOT cutting taxes, he is just leaving the BUSH tax cuts in place!

Wow, Tell me something Conservatives...
How is Obama any more "Socialist" than FDR? FDR gave you all that your parents had. Neocons take it all back. All that New Deal crap gave us a strong economy, strong middle class, good schools, ROADS! Cripes a little and I REPEAT, little socialism goes a long way. Everything in balance. Capitalism in it's pure form will gobble all you little selfish scumbags up in a decades time. Obama is no Marx. Obama has no desire to strip this country of what made it the wealthiest nation in the world. He only wants to improve our home. McCain will do nothing for you. His masters won't let him, and not enough of you spineless republican jellyfish have the balls enough to gather round and make it happen. At least Obama, who is whether you like it or not, backed by the majority of the whole world. That's clout!
Sweet Jesus pull you heads out of your fear filled asses you degenerates.
You'll all be bitching about no middle class soon if you continue to let your fears drive your voting. McCain is a soft serve puss. I actually liked him when he ran against W. Then he folded like the good little panty waist he is, taking it right in the can from the imbecile. He's no Maverick. He's a flat, lying piece of passionless horse crap.
Try voting FOR someone instead of voting AGAINST someone else. There's only one choice for 08. Only one man will allow US the people to drive the policy making of our future.
OBAMA!!!

Is anyone posting on this site over 16 years old? You sorry whiners are just writing ignorant comments on the toilet stall walls. Contrary to what your mommy told you, noone cares what you feel. If you had something worthwhile to say, people might listen. But all the name calling, made up foolishness about John McCain and Sarah Palin fails to reveal any thinking is going on among the Obama supporters. McCain and Palin support life, want to win the war in Iraq, oppose homosexual marriage, favor drilling now to move toward energy independence, just to name a few positions. If you defenders of Obama could articulate the righteousness of killing babies in the womb or on the delivery room table, the benefits of abdicating American responsibility and self-interest in the word, explain the cultural benefits of destroying the American family, and explain how windmills and batteries that don't yet exist provide power for vehicles and lead to energy independence, perhaps some voters might be moved to your cause. Simply calling names, making up motivations, and sliming Governor Palin, sure doesn't win people to your side. What knuckleheads.

AntonioG:
I actually probably have a higher tax burden than you. (From the sound of it, you are concerned about raised taxes, which indicates an income of $250,000 or more.) My brother runs a Fortune 500 company and pays a lower percentage in taxes than I do. So, I guess fairness only concerns you when you are clutching your wallet. I also have a credit rating of 780, which would indicate that I do NOT, in fact, live beyond my means. I just teach your children. I'm in the same situation as police, firefighters, many civil servants, and other people who chose to serve their communities rather than their bank accounts.
And a final thought: we were all doing fine eight years ago.

Bruce Springsteen endorses Barack Obama
"He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next president
He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where '...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone.
Critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships
While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision ... often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment." Bruce Springsteen
Vote for the real change leaders!

Excerpt fom Susan Eisenhower speech at the Democrat National Convention.
I believe that Barack Obama has the energy and the temperament to lead this country. He knows that we can either advance on the distant hills of hope or retreat to the garrisons of fear. As our standard bearer, he can mobilize a demoralized America and inspire all of us to show up for duty. Discipline will be required, as will compromise, flexibility and quiet strength.
Barack Obama has already articulated a powerful vision for our nation’s future and our standing in the world.
The task before our next president will be overwhelming. But no undertaking will be more critical than bringing about a sense of national unity and purpose, built on mutual respect and bi-partisanship.
Unless we squarely face our challenges, as Americans together, we risk losing the priceless heritage bestowed on us by the sweat and the sacrifice of our forbearers. If we do not pull together, we could lose the America that has been an inspiration to the world.
On December 1, 1862, in his annual message to Congress, Abraham Lincoln immortalized this thought when he said: “We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”
Let us respond this November to President Lincoln’s challenge.
Let us restore the hope and bring the change that our nation so desperately needs.
When Susan Eisenhower ended her great speech with “Yes we can!” over 84,000 supporters cheered, over 38,000,000 viewers saw her on TV and jumped out of their living room couches and cheered!

Answers to the following:
Oh the shamelessness!!--Yes it is shameless
"For the first time in my adult life I'm proud of America" wife--Palin's husband was a member of an organization that wants to break away from the U. S. for years. Let's compare that to one remark that meant she wasn't proud of the POLITICS of America.
"God D*** America" pastor--Again, sounds like Palin's husband's group.
Hypocrite who speaks one way to people in the middle America and then talk about them behind their back in San Francisco--Says she got rid of the Bridge to Nowhere but only after it became unpopular. Before that she was for it and even had a "Bridge to Nowhere" shirt.
Tony Rezko--No illegal acts done here. It has been investigated to the bones.
Bill Ayers.--Obama was eight years old. Ayers is now a professor.

Let us look carefully at the steps to communisum. 1)freedom. willfully give it away. How? By knowingly and willingly standing for the WRONG things.
2) We arrive at the door od Socialism. Paint it with any brush, when the white wash has run off due to the tears of pain, then you will see it was just rob the rich and give to the poor. I want some of those Ivy Leaguer's to start sharing some of their grades with me.
3) When we are at the mercy of the greatest Idiots and they instill Communisum!
Just three step backwars is all it takes

"Shameless?" Could Mr. Change elaborate on his associates in Syria, the Church of lovey-dovey Respect, maybe even his deconstructed "entertainers" from the Coast rolling in money while preaching responsibility? Better, discuss Michelle's $350,000 job as an outreach director, maybe even all of his donors' uneco-friendly jets, yachts, villas, etc. Shameless, indeed. What's the function of a privileged outreach director anyway? Talk about hypocrisy. The only thing the liberals have mastered.

I'm glad to see a few of these posts mention Obama's wanting to turn us into a Socialist Society. That, to me, is the scariest thing about him. Why do Dems want the US to be Socialists? What Socialist country any place in the world has had the successes, the freedoms and the opportunities we have enjoyed in the United States? NONE. Is that what we really want? It may sound great but it won't be. There is nothing in history to prove it works and it won't work here, especially because we've had better.
Get a life, you Dems. If your guy wins, you won't have much of one.

After living in Alaska most of my life 29 years and now living in AZ I will tell all of you Progressive Liberal lower 48ers a little something if you think Sarah Palin is a push over keep your heads in the sand it wont hurt as much if you don’t see it coming. LOL
This is so funny watching Commie’s poop there diapers and talk all high and mighty about giving Terrorist the same rights as an American in court PLEASE LOL then in the same lame breath try and take our 2nd amendment rights away.
Yea I see how you lefties think, your all for the First Amendment if everyone thinks like You and if not we are all racist homophobes that want to steel Grandma’s SSI check then kick her down the stairs. What kind of Drugs did your Liberal Marxist commune tree hugging mommy and daddy take in the 60s???
Progressive Liberals think Terrorist should have Constitutional rights and access to our court system but when it comes down to American’s having the right to keep and bear arms well that’s just an out dated section in the Bill of Rights so the 2nd Amendment should be abolished.
Only backward thinking savage NRA types think it’s an individual right that should be preserved at any cost.
Well let me tell you a little secret comrades Millions of us are the NRA and your Messiah’s Obama and Obiden are about to really get SAVAGED by one NRA member and her name is Sarah-Barracuda Palin.
Can’t wait until the Debate in October LOL

takes time to think through a thought. hmmm. Obama does that include putting your hand over your heart when you say the pledge, or wearing the flagpin in the morning. or calling your terrorist friends for advice. or saying Americans are bitter and kling to guns and bibles. I sure would not want to play chess with this guy. It would take day's for a move.

To have an 80% approval rating in Alaska Governor Palin has to have a lot on the ball. I have lived in 4 distinctively different areas in the USA in my life,in Alaska at present, and Alaska is by far the most diverse I have seen, and I did live in CA at one time. My guess would be that Alaska is one of the 5 most diverse states in the union. So, Governor Palin has not gained an 80% approval rating from just a bunch of small town rednecks but rather from a wide variety of races and ethnic backgrounds. As to the statement about 80% of 200,00 the number is actually over 600,00 but it doesn't really matter what the total is - it is what the percentage indicates. 80% of a very diverse population speaks volumes on Governor Palin's ability to perform for her constituents. I would say that John McCain and Sarah Palin truly do have the socialist democratic party scared and on the run for ways to try and devalue them as viable leaders of the free world. So, whether you are a Republican or a Democrat or Independent you should look at the whole person in evaluating your choice on November 4th. The choices one makes in the little things in life will assuredly be reflected in the choices they make in the big things.

Everyone keeps asking the question is Sarah Palan ready to be president?
The truth is she will learn a lot from John Mc Cain just like Obama would learn something from Biden.
Obama has been a senator for a few more months than Palin been governor, but Obama has never run anything but for an office, trying to get a job, doesn’t qualify you for the job. But the REAL larger question and the question that no one seems to be addressing, why does anyone think that Obama is more qualified than Palan to be President?
His resume for the last 20 years of his life just doesn’t stack up to Sarah's
Palan’s got experience, she’s made decisions, she’s managed people and money, she’s put herself out there, Obama, has been an attorney for his whole life, ducking responsibility and decisions.
We don’t need someone who shifts decisions based on wind direction.
We need a leader who can standup for their convictions; we need someone with a backbone, who understands us; our fears, joys and pains.
We need someone who can take a punch and come back; John MCCain has shown that,
But there’s the focus on age…. (A bogus point) 71 isn’t old anymore, and I dont want to think that when I hit 71, my life is over, Im not productive, hell Jack Lanne is over 90 and in better physical shape than most 30 years olds, we have to get rid of the concept of too old, it should be about the person, not the number, it should be about the person not the SEX or Color.
Also think about it, McCain is tough physically, mentally and spiritually, knock him down he bounces back,
His mother is not only sharp but physically active at 96.
That being said, AGAIN why the belief that Obama is more qualified than Palan?
Whatever happens in this election I expect to see Palan running for President one day, and she'll have my vote. Our country is indeed ready for a woman and a Black man for president. But Obama is not that Black Man, Obama is a socialist, he was raided as a socialist, look at the influences in his life. Obama believes in a different form of government, and we should be afraid of that.
The cultural wars are getting hotter, America is at a crossroad. Does the US stand on its on feet where each person solves their own problems with some assistance, or do we create a whole new society where Government does everything for us?
Obama has answered that question with a resounding yell of… Big Brother CAN.

It is when what you really want is for ME to pay higher taxes so you can live beyond your means.
Decent health care: what does that mean? Free?
Affordable child care: Why did you have children if you couldnt afford them? To foist them on society? Not the sign of a good parent, is it?
Sustainable energy: Ok. I guess you agree we should drill more.
Reasonable tax burdens: For thee, but not for me right?

I love the people bragging that Obama co-sponsored soooo many bill. Which, involves the sponsor asking if he would like to have his name on it and him saying ok. Not exactly and executive decision. Being one of 100 votes on any bill, not exactly executive experiece. Voting present repeatedly, not exactly executive experience. Executive experience is being the person who makes the final decision on EVERY issue. I wish I could just go to work and say "present" and go home then claim experience, but real life doesn't work like that. How about getting a bill in the mail and instead of paying it just writing "present" on it, wow would life be easier like that. So I guess in a way I may envy Obama that he hasn't ever done anything in his life with any responsibilities, but may become president. Isn't it great, but I'm still not voting for the blank slate.

I mean they are still saying that Trig is her daughter's son even though he is like four months old and her daughter is 5 months pregant, last I heard that wasn't possible unless you are a lib trying to win an election.

Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.
She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.
She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She’s been registered as a Republican since May 1982.
Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesy" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.
Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."

"Yes, Barack Obama may be the great African-American hope, Joe Biden the reassuringly experienced eminence grise and John McCain the ultimate patriotic American hero. Thoughts on Charlie Gibson interview with Palin.
The scenery will distract from Charlie's questions on the issues. An environment controlled by the top republican experts Schimt and Davis. Voters remember impressions or personalities more then issues in a TV special. In a way Davis was telegraphing his next move the interview where he thinks this election will be decide on personalities and appearances not on the issues. America has the attention span of a 30 second commercial. This is when it comes to products. The Packaging of Palin is serious business.
On the mainstream talk shows there is no symbolic scenery with carefully tested poll driven pictures and books around. So there are no distractions. Palin should go on Meet the Press or George's show environments Schmidt and Davis can't control. All of the other candidates have been on these shows for years. We feel like we know them. Yes we can believe they are ready to represent this country. They took the questions on our minds and clearly shown the contrast and approaches of both parties. Palin hasn't done this.
Its Palins turn to do all the shows, not on her or Davis schedule but on the voters schedule which is less the 56 days before every one goes to that booth and votes. We already know the other candidates. We don't know Palin yet. She can finally answer the question about the bridge to nowhere.

It looks like mr magic has lost his mojo.
Just sputtering around slinging his usual lies, just like most dems. Go Mcain/Palin 08

Is this election gonna turn into Reagan vs. Mondale only with the woman veep being on the winning side this time?

I am just one of those non-elitist, unedumakated, bible thumpin, gun totin, mean spirited racist Republicans. I did not know that until I spoke with an Obama supporter the other day. All I asked was what makes Obama qualified to be President? I was told what an uninformed racist idiot I was. However, I did not get an answer to my question, so my vote still goes to McCain Palin.

The Obama comments are not the rhetoric of a messiah. If he's becoming this unraveled over a political campaign, Heaven help if he's elected and we have have a problem with Iran, etc.

A fired-up Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took on his opponents -- "these people," he said incredulously, in a familiar refrain -- for shamelessness and dishonesty.
I strongly believe Obama does know shameless and dishonesty, remember his pastor, his dealing with his Chicago pals on his home, his being on the board that now he can't remember. I ask all to please see his voting record during his time in Washington. He has spent more time writing books than voting. "shameless"

I am sick and tired of hearing about Obama having been a constitutional professor. He NEVER held a professor appointment, he was merely a lecturer for about a year.
Moreover, he and Biden both voted the money for the bridge to nowhere and never withdrew their vote.
It saddens me that this country has so many gullible dupes that would vote for Obama/Biden.
Posted by: swissik | Sep 9, 2008 4:43:42 PM
Oh come on!! Don't give me this white supremecist crap!! What percentage of blacks will vote for Obama. I'm sure some whites won't vote for Obama cuz he's black. Also, some men won't vote for McCain because Pailin is a woman. I'm not voting for Obama because he's a socialist it has nothing to do with the color of his skin!! So now the libs are already setting it up if he loses
America is racist, what a joke!! Why don't the democrats come up with a candidate that isn't an empty suit and you wouldn't have to worry about losing cuz you have the media doing everything they can to get him elected.

Hope and change have arrive and they are McCain and Pailin. Wow what ticket 2 mavericks against two idiots who have done nothing in thier unfortunate careers. I have always wanted to be a community organizer and they both plaigarize. Haha what a joke they steal other peoples speeches but think they offer change. They can't even change someone else's speech to give thier own. And Biden's plaigarized speech was taken from a british socialist, kinda says something doesn't it?

Looks like a lot of people here are really not hearing the message that Sen.Obama is trying to deliver. I think I know why, some of you will not like this answer but really think about it. I will be the first to admit it, that all my life I was raised to believe that my race(Caucasian)was second to none. I saw it in the work place, home and at church. Now to believe that a African/American male has a real chance to be President of the United States of America is a little bit much for some people to stomach, this is shown clearly in some of the statements in this blog. A lot of Caucasians in America have a real problem with a Black Man in a position of authority and that's the real problem....just be honest with yourself.

I would vote for Obama if I wasn't a small towner clinging to my guns and religion, and this xenophobia is a pain. I really want to vote for him cause I love a presidential candidate that can actually shift on major positions within 24 hrs. and who thinks airing up your tires will have a dramatic impact on oil usage, which would possibly be true if the majority of people were driving around with under inflated tires, but since every time you get your oil changed they air up the tires, I find it doubtful.

I see the change that Obama and his left wing loonies have in store for us.
He is changing the Democrat party to the Socialist party. CHANGE THAT WORKS??? Change that works for those votes they buy through the distribution of money earned through the sweat of hard working Americans. Illegals take delight help and change is on the way.

goodbyeUSA:
You are extremely condescending and silly. I am very successful--simply not well-paid. There are many occupations that don't pay above $50,000 a year; this is, in fact, the median income for most American households. I put myself through higher education, and so do not, as I said, expect any hand-outs. My point is that most households are working two jobs, and most are currently struggling. (I don't, in fact, know anyone who is not--and all the people that I know are middle class.) The problem is the rising cost of property taxes, health care, utilities and food that is placing considerable pressure upon ordinary families. Surely we are not all spendthrifts and drug addicts.
I am for nuclear technology (and unlike our current president, can pronounce it), and will tolerate some off-shore drilling. But this cannot resolve the situation long-term. There are real policy issues to confront, and assumptions about the incompetence of others is a comfortable fiction; it is not, however, the reality of most middle class people who are experiencing real discomfort.

About the Terrorist thing and Obama's remarks...I think he...because of his associations...should stay the heck away from that topic.
About how great Obama has been in the Senate concerning bills..STOP IT..RIGHT NOW..THIS IS LYING. All one has to do is look at Barack Baby's Bill..."Global Poverty Bill, wherein he gives (in addition to his big tax cut for everyone) .7% of our GDP to Third World Countries. Now...I ask you this: If you have more going out in tax cuts for his supposed 95% of the people, you are giving away .7% of the GDP, you won't get behind drilling, you want to take away capital gains and dividend returns (which hurt the largest number of taxpayers, i.e., retirees who depend on it to LIVE..what does one end up with? ANSWER....zero "0". BANKRUPT...OUT OF BUSINESS..BEEN HAD. Tax small businesses with increased SS tax and put them into millionaire tax bracket...and...AGAIN..YOU BANKRUPT THE COUNTRY. So..your financial wizard, Obama...is going to take your country away from you...and you...are going to vote for this? Please help me to understand this. Surely...most of you balance a checkbook?

"voter in pa", your facts are WAY OFF! I realize you are blinded by obamaitis, but simply chedk the Thomas Register at the Library of Congress. Obama has sponsored ONLY 152 bills.
They include: "Juneteenth Independence Day", "congradulating the White Sox", another Juneteenth, designating "National Summer Learning day", and other junk.
He failed to vote on the "Defense Authorizations Bill", "Department of Homealnd Security Appropriations", "National Defense Authorization Acto for 2008", and many more.
Obama is bad for America.

John McCain wants to cut taxes for EVERYONE and reduce spending.
Barack Obama wants to increase taxes on anyone making $30,000 a year single or $60,000 jointly to give money back to people who pay no taxes and increase government spending by $1MM.
There has not been a single economist to endorse Barack Obama's plan, who hasn't been paid by his campaign. While every reputable independent economist has endorsed McCain's and gone on the record as saying Obama's plan will put the USA into another Great Depression.
Why can't everyone be more like John McCain and Sarah Palin and reach across party lines and buck the old system of politics? Palin is good for women and McCain is good for all Americans.
Stop the hate Dems. Stop the lying. Let's focus on the facts and issues and all will come to see how McCain is the only choice in 2008. Bill and Hillary Clinton agree with me and apparently 54% of voters.

Posted by: wiggles | Sep 9, 2008 4:09:44 PM
On George W. Bush's plans for a limited military redeployment from Iraq to Afghanistan.
Bush is making his move now in a attempt to help McCain. You don't make a move like this 56 days before the voters go to the voting booth and all of a sudden have a answer that looks like a band aid or was it a Schmidt poll that said this will help McCain by a few percentage points? Already many of our sons and daughters are servicing a second or third tour.
Also over 4,000 of our sons and daughter lost their lives. Also over 30,000 of our sons and daughters have come home wounded. Did you see them marching or in wheel chairs this fourth of July? I did. No one knows how many Iraq civilians have been killed but the number do range from 200,000 to even a million. I don't think God whats us killing other human beings over WMD that did not exist. Over 2 million Iraq civilians have left their country fearful for their lives and their families. So don't tell me that victory is now here and try to keep asking Obama about a surge. The voters surge will happen on November 4th.
Bush left a mess. A mess that will take years to clean up. Republicans should be held accountable until its clean up. They should be accountable for 2010 and 2012 elections. It might take that long if not longer?
This will still be a divided government. Look how the Republican's have block
bills from passing since 2006.
Obama/Biden will work with all parties and end this mess, this gridlock. McCain is just going to keep up the negative ads which are dividing this country with wedge issues.

'Democrats have airdropped a mini-army of 30 lawyers, investigators and opposition researchers into Anchorage'...
Obama is scared...
The more they find on Palin, the more America loves her. They are making Palin one thing that no election has ever had... A real person that everyone can identify with.

Kim - Try taking a good good look at yourself and stop copping out, it isn't other American's fault you and your husband haven't been very successful. A lot of times people like you mismanage their finances, spend more than they can afford ,make poor career decisions, have inferiority complexes that keeps them from advancing & competing, have addictions & habits and weak morals etc.or are just kind of dumb from believing so many lies that they can't make progress. The Democrats just in energy alone (not to mention many other things) have put huge financial pressures on the average American, they have block drilling & nuclear for decades . Oil is a big reason were fighting in the middle east too so that money could have been saved if we weren't so depended on the Islamic nations there would be less temptation to get involved in wars over there.

Our entire electoral process is designed to split America. All I have read about is extreme views from the left and right, it's sickening. Wish a state would secede, I would join their military in a heartbeat.

(1) President Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the Civil War. Mr. Obama probably missed this class in consitutional history... His handlers are not well informed either :-)
Posted by: cody | Sep 9, 2008 3:49:19 PM
Kim, you could not be more wrong when you say "always during wars that are finite". By definition ALL wars are infinite until they end. There was no "exit strategy" (except victory) in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea (which we are still technically in), and the only finiteness to Vietnam was quitting. Only when the instigator surrendered, did we exit (except for the Civil War, WWII, and Korea - we stayed around for many, many years longer). The finiteness here is the same, when the terrorist surrender, we can go home.

voter in PA "You have the audacity to say that he NEEDS to take of his HALF brother halfway around the world?"
you seem to have a lower opinion of Obama than I do, what do you think Obama is going to take away some of his half brother's almost 12 dollars a year he lives off of?
Posted by: goodbyeUSA | Sep 9, 2008 3:43:41 PM
Ok let me get this straight first Palin supported “The bridge to nowhere”during her gubernatorial race in 2006. A paper trail supports this.
Then she backed away from it but kept the money.
Now Senator Ted Stevens has thrown in his two cents because he wants to beat Mark Begich. Ted said he never thought? There is no paper trail to Ted's Thought. There is a paper trail to Palin's actions.
I rest my case.

Here's a question...Why is the economy, good or bad, laid on the President?
Last time I checked, the Constitution gives congress (the opposite of progress) the "power" over the "money".
Also, from a historical perspective, the Democrats have controlled congress 30 of the last 40 yrs.
And as far as BHO's "More of the same" stuff, hmmm, Biden has been in the Senate for 36 yrs...why hasn't he tried to change it?
