Obama Says McCain Is Offering Fake Change: 'You Can Put Lipstick on a Pig, But It's Still a Pig'
September 09, 2008 6:10 PM
LEBANON, Va. -- "That's not change," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is offering, laying out how McCain and President George W. Bush agree -- in Obama's view -- on economic policy, foreign policy, health care policy, etc., etc.
"You know, you can put lipstick on a pig," Obama said, "but it's still a pig."
The crowd rose and applauded, some of them later telling reporters* that they thought Obama had been alluding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's ad lib during her vice presidential nomination acceptance speech last week, "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called 'change,'" Obama continued, "it's still gonna stink after eight years.
"We’ve had enough of the same old thing! It’s time to bring about real change to Washington. And that’s the choice you’ve got in this election."
Obama added that "it is not going to be easy ... John McCain has a compelling biography, you know Sarah Palin is an interesting story."
The crowd booed.
"No, she’s new!" Obama said. "She hasn’t been on the scene, you know, she’s got five kids and my hat goes off to anybody who’s looking after five. I’ve got two and they tire Michelle and me out!"
-- Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller
UPDATE: Obama senior adviser Robert Gibbs insists the senator was not referring to Palin or Palin's comments. "That's an old expression," Gibbs says.
* Note: this post has been updated. I originally wrote that the crowd "no doubt" made the connection, and then, after a bunch of us who were there in the gym talked to members of the audience, I changed this entry to reflect that they told us that they made the connection. Which is NOT the same thing, significantly, as them telling us that they thought Obama was calling Palin a pig -- an interpretation NONE of us heard from members of the the audience, despite the false claim pushed by the McCain campaign.

The lipstck comment by Obama was an intentional remark. All you had to do was watch his body language, the hesitation in his comments and the audience reaction to know it was intentionally said about Palin. It was like he was saying "do you hear me now".
It is sad that it has come to this!!

Can't you people who are seemingly offended by Obama's 'lipstick on a pig' comment just do a little fact checking? Watch the video of him. He's directly referring to McCain, he never even mentions Palin. Y'all are pathetic in your lack of due dilligence.
I would think more people should be offended by Palin disparaging Community Organizers than this false controversy. Do y'all mean to tell me that a mayor does more than your local Boys and Girls Clubs, or Women's or Men's Clubs, or your Clergy, or your PTA? They're ALL Community Organizers!!
I personally took great offense to her remarks.

Can you please provide an example of that? Which liberal Brit? When?

What did he plagiarize from the Post? When?

How about the Palins hanging out with secessionists? People who put Alaska - not America - first. Good choice, McCain.

Her church had a speaker from Jews for Jesus, who spouted anti-Israel rhetoric.

Yes, we are, so McCain/Palin supporters have no cause to throw stones. Their company includes campaign manager Rick Davis (a former lobbyist for Freddie and Fanny)and numerous Bush aides, some of whom are tutoring Palin on foreign policy now.
And they have the nerve to call themselves the change candidates.

The only people pretending to buy this garbage are the former Clinton supporters who are so racist that they are now going to vote republican. We are not fooled by your sudden change in political affiliation or this desperate fake outrage. The outrage and disgrace is that Republican women like former Republican governor of Massachusetts, Jane Swift, are letting themselves be used in this manner to try to sway even more women into joining the Republican party. The Republican honchos obviously believe that the women of this country are so stupid and vindictive that we will swallow any nonsense they put out. We are not ! Keep trying things like this though, it only shows you for who and what you really are.

Hmmm...one sentence in my last post seems to have gotten garbled. What I said was that I hope Charlie Gibson asks her the important questions because it'll probably be the only interview she does.
Apologies for any confusion. : )

This is much ado about nothing. Palin's condescending, mean-spirited, snarky acceptance speech showed that she can clearly dish it out, so shouldn't she be able to take it? Quit whining - he wasn't talking about you anyway.
Folks have also mentioned the reaction of the Obama crowd. Can't that reaction be likened to the reaction of the Republican delegates during her speech? Didn't they laugh and hoot at her demeaning zingers? Isn't it the same thing?
The man - Talk about Obama not leading. McCain appears to have given up being the top of the ticket to Ms. Palin.
Jayhawk - seems to me that Palin is simply Obama in a skirt. The second coming. As another poster said, people heard one speech (which she has repeated ad nauseum) and they think she's THE ONE. People are willing to put her a heartbeat away from the presidency when FEW PEOPLE KNEW HER less than two weeks ago. And we don't have time to get to know her and what she believes. That scares me. And all of this adoration AFTER ONE SPEECH. Isn't that what Obama detractors accuse his supporters of having done?
Normally the VP pick isn't that important, but at McCain's age it is of utmost importance.
TV, your comments were spot on. I mean, is it just me or are there just too many weird parallels between Palin and Obama? Everything his detractors say about Obama can also be thrown right back at her, down to the supposed radical associations - in her case, her husband's membership in the AIP. She also *did* sit in church and listen to an anti-semitic speech. Why didn't she get up and leave? What about her children being subjected to that?
In all, I think John McCain was incredibly irresponsible to put someone on the ticket that we have no chance to get to know before election day. She may have more chops than I realize, but I want to know this BEFORE I vote.
Itant questions because it'll pr hope Charlie Gibson asks her imporobably be the only interview she does. The way the McCain campaign is keeping her on such a tight leash is disrespectful and demeaning to the American voter. We have a right to know who this woman is and what she believes before we vote.

After the "debate" debacle, and this crap, consider me and ex-ABC news viewer. I hope others reading this post will follow suit.

"This" is a story?!

P.S. It's insulting to both Sarah Palin and to Hillary Clinton. (See my comment below):

Do you Hillary supporters really think voting for a party with a woman on the ticket is the same as voting for Hillary? Palin and Clinton have OPPOSITE opinions on the issues. As a woman, I'm ashamed that Hillary supporters are willing to back any candidate that is female. I thought the women's movement was about ideas, not body parts.

I really hope that, Republican or Democrat, we get a group of people in the White House who are not as hateful and vindictive as this crowd. I believe you are so eager to find what you want to find that you see what is not there. 1. Lipstick on a Pig is an expression politicians use all the time to describe legislation or ideas that they think are no good, but which have been made to look attractive to the average person. If you listen to Obama's WHOLE statement, you will see that he is talking about McCain's platform, not his running mate. In fact, McCain used the expression about H.Clinton's healthcare stance. 2. Obama is not a "secret Muslim." If you listen to the WHOLE statement, it's clear what his meaning was, even though he did not word it well. He is talking about how Sen. McCain has not suggested that he is a Muslim. He said, "John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith." I hope that, despite our different opinions about the issues, all of us Americans can learn to seek the truth and reason together rationally to solve our problems. Or is there no hope? It's up to us, people.

Why do you republicans just let this man, Obama dig his own hole. The more you let him go the deeper his hole will be. His ego is so big now, he thinks he is the saviour of the world. Sarah Pallin can eat his lunch. She is tough enough to best him. The more you continue to whine about what the liberals are doing, the happier it makes them.

I am tired of reading the vile filth coming from the libs on this blog. What can I expect they follow their man Obama's example. If he is elected you will all get what you deserve.

Obama claims he wants change? Well then he should have chosen the most voted for and qualified candidate, Hillary Clinton. It makes me sick and angry every day to know that she should be where he is right now. So she can campaign for him til the cows come home but there are many such as myself who will not support someone who has such a blatent lack of regard for her. That's not enough for me. I'm voting McCain/Palin.

What i see and hear is white women flocking to a candidate who has given one sarcastic and divisive speech that we really don't know anything about.she is good for our country because she is a white women? A governor? George Bush was a governor? Would you rehire him? Arnold Schwarzenegger is a governor and Jesse the Body Ventura was. Should either of those men run this or be close to running this country.More than likely Mrs. Palin is a hard right wing conservative that has evoked interest from the masses because of her gender.Period.If I was a republican I would be ashamed. It seems John McCain in a very clever and guile manuver has shown that he would rather win an election than properly serve his country.Sarah is the celebrity that John is always calling Barack. We do not know her and in two months I doubt that is enough time to scratch the surface. At this moment in time I am ashamed and appauled at the utter stupidity of some of these women voters. If this election is thrown away because of republican manipulation we have fallen for before.... Hopefully America will wake up! Hopefully America is ready for real change and not this same ole pig with new lipstick, rotten egg painted bright, old car new paint job.America thrived in its last democratic administration. We need a democrat, not a rich old man that has so many homes he can't count and his beauty queen running mate with her ugly glasses, shrill voice, self righteous attitude and narrow minded ideals.

I'm sure under a Palin Presidency after McCain's, "SHE" will be a true leader of the world as Maggie Thatcher was! I love how the right folks come along when the world needs them most. Got to love the fight and don't take it all so seriously--we fight in America but only feelings get hurt and nobody dies. USA USA USA!

Obama worked for the nomination. LOL! Are you kidding me the media practically handed it to him. If he was vetted properly 19 months ago we would have Hillary Clinton as the Democrat nominee. She thrashed him badly towards the end but it was too little to late. She was too far behind by the time he was finally vetted a little bit. And as for Palin McCain picked her because of her reform credentials, EXECUTIVE experience, and her ability to get things done. It helped that she was a young woman who is "MIDDLE CLASS" who could effectively communicate. McCain and Palin have proven they are ready to lead and they will earn America's trust. Unlike Obama who thinks he is already president and believes he is owed it. No you have to EARN it Obama hasn't. Sorry not this year.

Matthew by you standards. Obama is the conservative who WORKED for the nomination and the change mantle and Sarah Palin is a Token Liberal, who collects our tax dollars to re- distribute wealth.
