Obama Says McCain Campaign Comment on this Being an Election Not About Issues Means False Attacks on Him
September 05, 2008 1:28 PM
DURYEA, Pa. -- "I know that I’m not your typical presidential candidate," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told executives and employees of the Schott glass company Friday afternoon, "and I just want to be honest with you. I know that."
"And I know that the temptation is to say, 'You know what? …The guy hasn’t been there that long in Washington.,' You know, 'he’s got funny name,' You know, 'we’re not sure about him,'" Obama continued. "And that’s what the Republicans, when they say, 'This isn’t about issues, it’s about personalities,' what they’re really saying is, 'We’re going to try to scare people about Barack. So we’re going to say that you know, maybe he’s got Muslim connections or we’re going to say that, you know, he hangs out with radicals or he’s not patriotic.'
"Just making stuff up," Obama said, "or that he never’s gotten anything done even though over the last 20 years I’ve given health care to kids who didn’t have it."
Obama was referring to a comment by Rick Davis, the campaign manager for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who told The Washington Post this week that "this election is not about issues, this election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

How can Obama say "issues not personalities" with a straight face?
Obama has been running a Biography Campaign from day one -- something his campaign explicitly outlined in the Rolling Stone's first in-depth profile.

...he hangs out with radicals...Just making stuff up...
Yep. Buried in that straw dog-pile is the thing he is worried about, and hopes to innoculate himself against; by preempting the attack and then denying it.
Gonna be an interesting election.

Yeah,
Those Dems are Sooo irresponsible with money. This is the second Republican administration to maxed out the credit card and leave the mess for Democrats to clean up.

VOTE FOR BARACK
AND:
PLAN FOR BROKE!

Its not about the issues, it's about using convoluted terminology that will imply more character assassination without actually saying it, something we've been doing for year.

Echo21,
When he says it's not about the issues, there's no going back.
I get the cult of personality thing now.
Good weekend to you too.

Lou - here's the quote from Jake's blog:
"this election is not about issues, this election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."
That's note finite, its a part of a sentence.
And when people start tattooing Obama's name and face on their body - shaving their heads with Obama's name (pictured right here on Jake's blog) - there is a cult of personality.
I am signing off. I hope you have a good weekend.

He said this:
This election is not about issues.
That is a finite statement that stands alone and all the twisting and spinning you do won't change that.
And please don't tell me what I know and don't know.
I said don't know what you mean by the culture of personality because I don't know what you mean by it.
Explain yourself or just let it go.
Posted by: Lou | Sep 5, 2008 6:32:02 PM
Lou - you are taking a fragment of his entire sentence. He didn't stop at "this is not about issues". And the cult of personality comment - yes, you do know what it is referencing if you've been paying attention for the past year.
Posted by: ECHO21 | Sep 5, 2008 6:21:10 PM
ECHO21,
Saying that the issues don't matter is ludicrous and defies all common sense.
And I have absolutely no idea what you mean by the "cult of personality" surrounding Obama.
Posted by: Lou | Sep 5, 2008 6:15:07 PM
t,
I second your sentiments.
While Obam/ Biden are out on the trail and granting interviews explaining to the American people what their views are, we have the McCain campaign up to the usual Karl Rove dirty tricks of name calling and lying.
The McCain camp will not allow Sarah Palin, a complete unknown, to do interviews with the mainstrem media.
That alone is a disservice to the voters and it also raises the question: What are they hiding?
Posted by: Lou | Sep 5, 2008 6:10:34 PM
Lou - yes, I read that - but "composite view" can include one's position on issues, yes?
And, yes issues are a big part of this election, but you must also admit there is a "cult of personality" surrounding Obama.

This election will determine whether the United States will stay a vibrant, flourishing democracy, or fades into a totalitarian permanent military state.
Vote for McCain if you want more of the same.
Vote for Barack if you're fed up with all of the sleazy lies, fed up with torture, fed up with incompetence. The younger generations see this clearly. Will the Baby Boomers be courageous enough to take a stand for the future of Democracy, a vibrant economy, and an education system that works, rather than payoffs to oil companies.
The obvious choice is Barack Obama. Take a stand. Refuse to be intimidated by the same old lies. We can do this. All it takes is for the Baby Boomers to have the courage to be on the right side of history: Barack Obama. GIVE US BACK THE COUNTRY WE LOVE! Give a chance to the younger generations; VOTE FOR BARACK!

Race baiting again Obama? You know that we Americans aren't dumb right? Some will actually believe because you say that "they" - meaning McCain or republicans - are saying it know that "they" aren't actually saying it. My problems are with your lack of actually doing your job - shown up to vote much lately or even "present"? My problem with you is that your friends sure seem to end up being bad people. My problem with you is that you say things like that above statement. My problem is that you voted against our troops - you do know they where being shot at and bombed, right? My problem with you (to borrow one of your talking points) is that you vote with Pelosi & Reid more than 97% of the time. My problem with you is that your solution to our energy crisis is a tire gage and no new drilling/nuclear/natural gas. My problem with you is that you think that gas should have gone up slower & that drilling wouldn't help anyway short term. As soon as Bush removed the executive ban on off-shore drilling gas been dropping. Have you or Reid or Pelosi or Biden voted on lifting the legislative ban yet? No - y'all went on vacation instead. Oh good - as long as the peoples business (you know, the people y'all work for) is getting done.
Obama - did you notice that not ONE of my problems with you have anything to do with your race or your religion? You can spin all you want but it is your positions not your race!

If I was Joe Biden... I'd be running to Obama and getting his VP papers in writing. Obama has already crawled over to Hillary and begged for her help once. Maybe Senator Biden might be coming down with a serious illness for the sakes of Obama's presidency.

It seems Senator Obama does not understand that we are judged on our actions, not what we say.
Senator Obama's actions, or lack of, are the very foundation of the negative comments that question his character and judgment.
He can continue to refer to these comments and accusations as lies and misunderstandings all he wants, but the bottom line is, they are not lies. No one made these things up, and he has demonstrated that he is powerless to defend against these allegations with any evidence that contradicts them.

Jake -- Why are you letting Obama get away with this? Has the McCain campaign EVER accused Obama of having Muslim connections? I believe the answer is no. So why are you putting this out there, without the explanation that Obama is continuing to start smears? Call him on this nonsense for Pete's sake.
Certainly bloggers have said stuff like that, but bloggers also brought up the stories of dubious paternity of Trib Palin. So I guess by that logic, DEMOCRATS said it.

It's not about him, eh.
"I"VE given health care to kids who didn't have it." Not just passed leg, huh...HE actually gave it to them. What a mensch...guess all those taxpayers had nothing to do with it.

Here goes Obama race baiting again, fighting fictitious and hypothetical opponents.
What a disgrace.
Sorry Barack, you're no longer the fresh new face in the campaign - Palin has trumped you.

Obama is right: he does hang out with radicals and his patriotism is questionable.
