Obama Sets Fundraising Record in August, Thanks to Palin
September 15, 2008 12:20 PM
Before August, Sen. Barack Obama's best fundraising month was February, when he raised $55 million.
Obama, D-Ill., was set to just fall short of that in August, a month that included some vacation time in Hawaii, when all of a sudden, on August 29, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Obama campaign officials reported that the Palin pick not only energized the GOP base, she energized her opponents, as well. Within 24 hours of McCain's surprise announcement that he'd picked Palin -- a conservative governor who, just two years ago, was a small-town mayor who had never obtained a passport -- the Obama campaign had raised more than $10 million.
And money kept coming in through the end of August and beyond, Obama campaign officials say.
Thus, it was Palin who enabled Obama to raise more money in August than has ever been raised in history. Yet another accomplishment for her precedent-setting candidacy.

"It is Palin's responsibility as it is ANY governor's job to bring as many earmarks into her state as are needed."
And no one attacker her for seeking earmarks.
What she is being attacked for is her lying about her position on earmarks.
She said "I told Congress thanks but no thanks on the Bridge to nowhere, that if Alaska wanted a bridge we would build it ourselves"
The problem is
a) She supported the bridge right up until it becamse politically unfeasible.
b) Alaska keep the money intended for the bridge.
c) Alaska when left to its onw devices to build the bridge promptly canceled the bridge.
Palin continues to lie about this every stump speech.
She could actually speak on her record(that she reduced earmark spending, her decision process on the bridgeetc)
Explaining her position would require some nuance and thought and right wingers hate that. Better to repeat Thanks bu no thanks no matter how big a lie it is.

"Its the fundamental dishonesty of Obama's whole campaign message, is the pork that clings to him, his family and his associates..... NOT the earmarks. "
And as Emil Jones, Obama's mentor has said, "one man's pork is another man's
steak"!
It is Palin's responsibility as it is ANY governor's job to bring as many earmarks into her state as are needed.
And earmarks are not the problem... so long as paybacks are not allowed!
In Illinois, they were/are!

for me it's gop numbers never add up, which with most americans having a hard time balancing a checkbook or saving, it probably doesn't matter until it does, then we overreact sideways.
we've a 1 trillion hole right now after 2 tax cuts during 2 wars all borrowed with interest from china. mccain wants to double-down on the tax cuts so we've anothe... Read Morer 3.3 trillion piled on. and so far he's found 17 billion of earmarks to cut.
nobody will be able to escape the basic arithmetic. folks can dogmatically assert that tax cuts solve all economic problems big or small but the evidence say otherwise. in 7 years wages have fallen net inflation. that's never happened before.
lop-sided tax cuts for rich spurred markets/investments that flow overseas for best returns as rich don't spend (thus rich). and now we've a gluttony of financial and credit assets going through a firesale w/ prices tanking. and consumer demand, 2/3 of economic activity, has dried up w/ no wage growth or bubble credit left.

"Now, with the only national-ticket candidate who's from OUTside the Congress (whose corruption has finally crashed the economy) McCain looks way better."
Yes, by putting on the ticket someone even more incompetent in economics than he is, McCain looks better by comparison.
Saying the fundamentals of our economy are good as tow major financial institutions go under and the Dow dfrops 500 pts undercuts the message of "not as dumb as Palin".

"If you're so outraged by this practice then please email your Congressional delegation and demand they cease and decist with all earmark requests."
This is the problem when you argue from a strawman perspective.
I am not against earmarks.
I think the Obama-Coburn solution of sunshine vs bans work better in the long run.
What I do see as a problem is Palin's repeated (even after she's been factchecked) lying on the stump regarding the bridge to nowhere. Its the disregard for the truth by the McCain campaign that is the most disturbing including McCain bizarrely insisting Palin had not requested any earmarks.
Its the fundamental dishonesty of his whole campaign message, not earmarks.
Facts are facts but analysis can certainly be biased.
That hurts you alot more than me because you tend to rely on biased right wing sources that delight in fudging numbers and just all around dishonesty.
Over and over again right wingers wonder when the msm is going to cover something based on what the right wing media tells them.
One would think at some point you guys would question those lying to you over and over again.

Greenspan: "America Can't Afford McCain's Tax Plan"
Greenspan: "Barack Obama's plan will lead to economic recovery and growth"

Deb, sure BHO will become Pres., and the next day the economy will recover, there will be nobody out of jobs, everyone will be prosperous, there will be world peace, the Heavens will open and there will be celestial singing! Get a grip, sweetie! The Dems have been in control of Congress for the last couple of years and BHO has been a Senator for a couple of years (I know he was hardly there to work for the people), and this is where we are today! The man has no experience or integrity - and I am not messing with ya!

Obama is so quick to blame President Bush for the financial woes
when the Congress has authority over financial and budgetary matters.
This shows how out of touch and blaming others for Obama's failures
and his Democrat led Congress of DNC(Do Nothing Crowd) failures.
Start with Democrat Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and
Democrat Harry Reid of Nevada that's where the blame and incompetence
comes from!!?

Ryan_C,
Here's a news flash for you - no one running for office is a change agent. Palin's dirty, Obama's dirty, McCain and Biden. They all wink and nod to get each other's earmarks through and every governor in the union says "thank you". None of that will change in the next four years no matter who wins. Surely you know that. If you're so outraged by this practice then please email your Congressional delegation and demand they cease and decist with all earmark requests.
Regarding the Washington Times, facts are facts regardless of where they are drawn from and can be corroborated. As usual when someone doesn't like the message they attack the messenger. Let the record show that Obama is clearly a party-line guy and always has been at all levels of government. Over the last four years McCain has co-sponsored more bills with Democrats than Republicans much to the consternation of his own party's leadership, hence the "Maverick" reputation. It's verifiable, go look it up.

"This doesn't include the cheaper cost of Health care giveing people the choice to buy into the same health care that senators get. Or the governments commitment to provide $4000 credit toward higher education in exchange for giving back to your community through community service."
______________
So the government will be able to provide us with all these extras.... even though it will be taking in less money.
Or will the rich, many of whom provide our jobs and essential, be more heavily taxed so that in order to provide these goodies, will be required to lower their benefits and up their prices so that, in the end, you'll be paying more (just not to the government) and not really receiving more!
As this plan unfolds, we need to be reminded that to tax big business heavily is to take away "INCENTIVE" and unless you want to segue into communism, that's NOT what you really want to do!
If it sounds too good to be true,
it usually is!
Think about it!

"Barry, why you try to delay the troops to come home? I want to see my son. Why Barry why?"
This is the craven nature of the right wing.
Forget who sent your son to war.
Forget who wants to keep your son there indefinitely.
Instead let's rely upon a known liar and pretend that we actually care about the troops.

Palin has gotten into Obama's head. He is totally out of control and sounds like an angry man as of late. He needs to pull it together before he has a total meltdown.

eyes wide open,
Why is it every right winger suffer amnesia for the last 8 years but suddenly KNOWS that this mess started during the Clinton years.
Let's take a look at Bush's Home Ownership Society. ++
# Expanding Homeownership. The President believes that homeownership is the cornerstone of America's vibrant communities and benefits individual families by building stability and long-term financial security. In June 2002, President Bush issued America's Homeownership Challenge to the real estate and mortgage finance industries to encourage them to join the effort to close the gap that exists between the homeownership rates of minorities and non-minorities. The President also announced the goal of increasing the number of minority homeowners by at least 5.5 million families before the end of the decade. Under his leadership, the overall U.S. homeownership rate in the second quarter of 2004 was at an all time high of 69.2 percent. Minority homeownership set a new record of 51 percent in the second quarter, up 0.2 percentage point from the first quarter and up 2.1 percentage points from a year ago. President Bush's initiative to dismantle the barriers to homeownership includes:
* American Dream Downpayment Initiative, which provides down payment assistance to approximately 40,000 low-income families;
* Affordable Housing. The President has proposed the Single-Family Affordable Housing Tax Credit, which would increase the supply of affordable homes;
* Helping Families Help Themselves. The President has proposed increasing support for the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunities Program; and
* Simplifying Homebuying and Increasing Education. The President and HUD want to empower homebuyers by simplifying the home buying process so consumers can better understand and benefit from cost savings. The President also wants to expand financial education efforts so that families can understand what they need to do to become homeowners.

So as our financial crisis worsens, McCain debates exactly what to call it.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Speaking before a group of about 500 mostly Hispanic voters at the Asociacin Borinquea de Florida Central today, McCain said that the "American worker" is being "threatened today because of the greed and corruption that some engaged in [on] Wall Street."
Responding to criticism over his comment from earlier in the day that the "fundamentals of our economy are strong," this afternoon McCain defined those fundamentals.
"My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals, the American worker and their innovation, their entrepreneurship, the small business, those are the fundamentals of America and I think they're strong," McCain said.
Today's clarification however, adds to a somewhat muddled message coming from McCain on the state of the economy. At last week's forum on national service, McCain said, "our economy is broken," but today he seemed to imply that it's not broken yet.
This afternoon McCain said, "our economy is at risk today," and specifically "the fundamentals of our economy are at risk." Based on his earlier definition of "the fundamentals," McCain asserted that "the American worker and their innovation" are at risk due to lack of sufficient regulation.
This man is clueless about the economy.

Yes we can. we are.
dont give yourself too much stress worrying about how the polls shift, if anyone knew a bit more about sample size, questioning methods, selection criteria and the fact that the pollesters are all owned by Republicans. :)

An Obama aide accused Taheri of confusing the Status of Forces agreement with a Strategic Framework Agreement, for which Obama has pushed for congressional review.
"This article bears as much resemblance to the truth as a McCain campaign commercial. Barack Obama has consistently called for any Strategic Framework Agreement to be submitted to the U.S. Congress so that the American people have the same opportunity for review as the Iraqi Parliament," said Obama spokeswoman Wendy Morigi. "Unlike John McCain, he supports a clear timetable to redeploy our troops that has the support of the Iraqi government. Barack Obama has never urged a delay in negotiations, nor has he urged a delay in immediately beginning a responsible drawdown of our combat brigades
