Oh, That Joe! (No. 15 in a Series) -- Biden Distances Himself From an Obama-Biden Ad
September 22, 2008 8:14 PM
In an interview that aired on CBS, Sen. Barack Obama's running mate Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., distanced himself from an Obama-Biden TV ad.
Katie Couric asked Biden about the "tone of the campaign" adding that "you guys haven't been completely guilt-free, making fun of John McCain's inability to use a computer."
Embed link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SKjTqgjq8E
Couric was apparently referring to the fact that an Obama-Biden TV ad tried to make fun of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for being so out of touch he doesn't use a computer -- though as ABC News reported, the real reason McCain doesn't use a computer is because of his war wounds. Small tasks make his shoulders ache, so he tries to avoid any repetitive exercise.
"I thought that was terrible by the way," Biden said of the ad.
"Why'd you do it then?" asked Couric.
"I didn't know we did it and if I had anything to do with it, we would have never done it," Biden said, "and I don't think Barack, you know, I just think...I don't think there was anything intentional about that, they were trying to make another point."
- jpt
UPDATE: Biden issued a statement tonight, saying, “I was asked about an ad I’d never seen, reacting merely to press reports. As I said right then, I knew there was nothing intentionally personal in the criticism of Sen. McCain’s views, which look backwards not forwards, and are out of touch with the new economic challenges we face today. Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that, given the disgraceful tenor of Sen. McCain’s ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize, especially when they continue to distort Barack’s votes on an issue as personal as keeping kids safe from sexual predators."

Why do you think they are hiding Palin from the media/press, she would absolutley reveal who she is. They are making sure she is kept under close watch until the election is over. If by chance Repubs when, she is going to set womens rights back, the church she attends believes they can change people from being Gay or Lesbian, she has a revenge mentality, she doesn't believe in aborstion under any circumstances, even if a young girl has been RAPED! Who in their right mind would do that to any young girl/women? But people are following her and McCain down the Garden path. JUST BLINDLY!

Dear S. Adams:
Thank you for taking the time to actually attempt to answer the question.
I appreciate it. However, I disagree.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"Last week, I distinctly heard him say he supported Paulson's bailout plan, this morning on the TODAY show with Matt Lauer he said he did not agree with it. "
Senator Obama agrees that something needs to be done, but he wants it done the right way. This is not a lie. This is called "thoughtfulness".
Also, Senator McCain indicated in his 60 Minutes interview that he supported the bailout as well, and yesterday he was not so sure. What's the difference?
It took more than a week to get into this situation, so a little "thinking" might be good, no?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"He became the nominee because he said he wanted to withdraw from Iraq immediately, now he says 16 months. "
This is not true. Senator Obama has said REPEATEDLY that we need to be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in. That has always been his position. So once again, this is not a lie.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"He said he was for tax increases, then tax cuts, now tax increases. "
Senator Obama is for tax CUTS for the middle class, and tax increases for the less than 5% of Americans making over $250,000 a year. That has been his position for the entire campaign.
That is also one of the biggest lies that Senator McCain keeps repeating - that Obama would raise taxes on the middle class. That is a LIE, and yet McCain keeps repeating it. Explain that.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"He said he was for universal healthcare, now he admits it would bankrupt the govt."
Senator Obama is for universal ACCESS to affordable healthcare. His plan would allow those who are happy with their current insurance to keep it, and those who are not would be able to PURCHASE insurance at an AFFORDABLE rate. Those who are uninsured would be insured by the government, but that is not the same as insuring everyone as the McCain campaign continues to imply.
Senator Obama has indicated a willingness to modify his plans based on market realities caused by Republican policies like deregulation.
That is called GOOD GOVERNMENT. John McCain still claims he can balance the budget in his first term. Another lie? I think so.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"He supported the late term abortion bill, now he says he didn't."
Senator Obama does not support abortion, he supports a woman's right to CHOOSE whether she will have the baby or not. Abortion is a bad thing, but it is also a personal thing. We can agree to disagree about this, but once again it is not a "lie", it is a disagreement.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Once again, thank you for taking the time to respond, but as you can see, I have done some "homework" of my own, and I will continue to. I ask you to do the same.

Hey, NF, did you request to have the -- Nobodys fool | Sep 23, 2008 11:42:40 AM -- comment removed?
Good for you! In my opinion, it made you look really bad!
As for your prior challenge -- Nobodys fool | Sep 23, 2008 11:34:04 AM -- that I "(Google Keating 5 if you war wounds will let you.)" I will say this:
Unlike John McCain I fortunately do not have any war wounds.
But unlike Joe Biden (or Bill Clinton), I did serve honorably in the United States military during the Viet-Nam War. I had mortars fired at me a few times, but they all missed!
I was drafted, and at the time was not very happy about it. At the request of a family member, and before reporting, I went to be see a doctor in Irvington, NJ. I could have gotten a letter from him that would have gotten me out of having to serve -- for what he called a "constitutionally bad back" problem.
But I decided right then that I wanted to be able to look in the mirror every day for the rest of my life. I grew up that day. I told the doctor I was going to "go for a second opinion." He smiled and told me I was making the right decision. It was indeed one of the best decisions I ever made.
So, fortunately NF, I don't have any war wounds you try to mock me about, though I did spend 13 months in the US Army in Vietnam, including All of the year 1970.
And, may I add, for quite obvious reasons on behalf of several close friends of mine, I do not particularly like anyone who does make fun of those who have war wounds. Your obnoxious comment, cited above, qualifies you for my "don't particularly like" status.
Congratulations -- if that's what "spins your record!"

If Obama didn't know about the ad, and he claims that his experience running a political campaign is sufficient experience to run our country, shouldn't he backup a step and take responsibility for the ad that he personally endorsed on national television?
Also, so what if John McCain chooses to not use the computer. My parents don't use the computer - and they are very intelligent and well respected people as well - and they get along fine.

Can't talk about his big ears, You're racist.

Nobody's fool:
You are confused, it is Obama who lies everytime he opens his mouth. I have never heard him say the same thing twice. He changes his positions depending on who his audience is.
Last week, I distinctly heard him say he supported Paulson's bailout plan, this morning on the TODAY show with Matt Lauer he said he did not agree with it.
He became the nominee because he said he wanted to withdraw from Iraq immediately, now he says 16 months.
He said he was for tax increases, then tax cuts, now tax increases.
He said he was for universal healthcare, now he admits it would bankrupt the govt.
He supported the late term abortion bill, now he says he didn't.
These are just a few, there are way more, but I'm not doing the homework for you.
As for McCain, he says the same thing at every town hall meeting and conference I've seen. Saddleback forum was the same talking points he has been saying.
Obama's "like a box of chocolates", you never know what you're going to get.

Sorry to disappoint Trochilus, but I'm a WOMAN.
And you can't dispute the fact that Senator McCain and Gov. Palin tell a lot of lies.
You can't because they do.
Senator McCain is up to his eyeballs in the very lobbyist corruption and deregulation that he now decries.
He only mentions the parts of his past that make him look good, and not a word about the Savings and Loan Debacle that led to a government bail out that he was a big part of. (Google Keating 5 if you war wounds will let you.)
The only question Trochilus, is why none of this bothers you?
Under what circumstances is lying permitted, when you agree with the liar?

When Your running mate criticizes the distorted assertions in It's Own commercials...Well thats something You cant 'get around'

Here's a good comment by Paula | Sep 23, 2008 10:06:37 AM. She says:
"Well, Obama said he didn't want to choose a "Yes Man" for VP. He got that!"
Exactly right!
But with his new "update" statement, it looks like Barry really got himself an, "e) All of the Above" Man!
Typical Joe Biden!
and as for Barry . . . Good judgment there fella! Ha! Um . . . isn't that what you say you are running on? He should check on the dashboard. His judgment needle is vibrating down on "E!"

Wait until Senator Obama's crutch
( tele-prompter ) is taken away
Friday night.
McCain can't type, Obama can't think.

Trochilus,
When will John McCain and Sarah Palin apologize for all the lies the tell daily?
You might not like the ad, but the simple fact is, its TRUE.
There is no getting around that.
Posted by: Nobodys fool | Sep 23, 2008 10:58:45 AM
"Obama spent a million dollars on consultants to tell him how he could show he was better qualified than McCain - their answer: TYPING!!!!!! "
That's just too funny.
Posted by: Angelo | Sep 23, 2008 10:57:30 AM
I can't help wondering if John McCain would have been as magnanimous as Joe Biden was in his initial reaction to the McCain smear about his lack of technical expertise.
We used to like McCain, as recently as 2000, but we now think that Joe's recent criticism of him has been right on the money. What happened to the other John McCain? Why did he sell out?

Joe Biden's comments again bring into focus that He clearly does not want this job. Looking more closely at His various statements (and that of former Pres. Clinton) They both subtly endorse 'a great man'-Not BO. Biden's lack of enthusiasm for His own campaign says it all about BO's lack of judgement and failure of leadership. TOO LATE NOW !
Posted by: ripster24007 | Sep 23, 2008 10:51:05 AM
Regarding a comment by LMartin | Sep 23, 2008 8:41:37 AM -- your statement is wrong in one very important respect.
You say: "The Obama ad did NOT seek to denigrate McCain because of war injuriies [sic]."
No one said the campaign did it openly. That is exactly what is most deceitful and dishonest about the ad.
The fact is that human beings in the Obama Campaign, including Barry himself, knew that John has difficulty typing because of those injuries.
There were news stories about that fact going all the way back to 2000, and some even more recently. But Obama and the people around him decided to run the nasty ad anyway. And he and his campaign are now reaping the consequences -- deservedly so!
By "distancing himself" from the ad, Biden is being a bit disingenuous too -- and with his "update" statement (see above), he is all over the map.
Typical Joe Biden.
Why didn't he just say, "That ad is disgraceful, and the campaign should pull it and we should apologize to John."
Please explain why he didn't do that?
I think we all know the answer to that. You Obama/Biden supporters are willing to see them do anything to win -- even dishonor a man for war wounds he received on YOUR behalf.
Sarah Palin is exactly right. In spite of what Obama and Biden claim now, John McCain really is the only one who "fought for you."
Did Joe Biden ever fight for this country? No.
Mr. "I wanted to be a professional football player" got himself student deferrments and stayed in school, thus avoided being drafted. When they ran out, he suddenly found something "wrong" and got himself a 4-F status.
Everyone who went through that time knew that some doctor somewhere would be willing to write that letter about a "condition" that would get you out of the draft. Everyone knew it!
Let's see that letter, Joe.

Obama has now come out and said he will support the use of military force in rogue nations and will also back a military surge (ha, ha) in Afghanistan. Just another 360, too many to count, from the King of Flip-Floppers. So all of of you libs still decrying war and death, and looking for a leader who won't use military might, it looks like you're out of luck.

I just don't get Hillary supporters, like Robert, saying that she "won the race" and she was "pushed out unfairly". What??? Where is that coming from? What reality is that based on??
It was a close race and got bitter there at the end, but how in the world can anyone think she won?! She had fewer votes. Period. The reason why she was pressured to exit the race before the very last vote was because it was mathematically impossible for her to win! Period. There's no big coverup or scandal. Anyone with a 3rd grade math level could figure that out.
If her supporters are going to bring up Michigan and Florida - Hillary herself signed an agreement that they wouldn't be counted - that is, until she realized she would need the results and started saying the opposite. Stop being so childish. Obama won. Either get behind him and support the Democratic platform or join the Republican party, but cut the BS historical revisionism.
The sexist attitudes toward Hillary were coming from the press and from some supporters of Obama, not from him nor his campaign. So, get over it and let's get these repubs out of the white house finally!
Posted by: Jim Bouchet | Sep 23, 2008 10:36:21 AM
Bob,
How many more chances should we give he Republican Party before you realize that they don't know WTH the are doing?
Posted by: Nobodys fool | Sep 23, 2008 10:30:30 AM
"As an avid Hillary Clinton supporter, I am truly saddened by the horrible actions of the Democratic Party leadership that denied us a candidate who is much more qualified than Obama. If Hillary had not been mistreated and unfairly pushed out of the race that she had won, maybe a Hillary-Biden ticket would have been possible. "

Sorry, but in America the person with the most votes wins. That person was Senator Obama.
No amount of whining is going to change that. Everyone played by the same set of rules. Everyone knew the rules in advance. Senator Clinton lost.
Part of being a grown up is accepting the good with the bad and facing reality.
We are facing too many big problems to be sitting around crying in our milk and pouting while the country goes to hell in a hand basket.
You don't have to like Senator Obama, you just have to love your country more than you hate him.
Can you do that for us?
Real people are really dying and losing their life savings, so this is a little more important than "hurt feelings" this year.
