Oh, That Joe! (No. 21 in a Series) -- Biden the Badger

September 26, 2008 4:31 PM

Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., is a concerned man.

“Folks, look, I'm a little concerned today,” Biden told a firehouse crowd at a fish fry Friday in Milwaukee, Wis. “You know, we badly need Wisconsin.”

"I was on a call this morning with the national campaign folks, which we do every morning," said the Democratic vice presidential nominee. "And they didn't know I was on the call.”

What might Biden have heard that might have made him so concerned?

Distressing polling numbers from the Badger State -- a battleground that he and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., desperately need in order to win in November?

“There was a suggestion made that maybe they wanted to know whether the Constitution allows you to change vice presidents at the very end here," Biden said.

Liberal blogs have been abuzz with speculation that Biden might relinquish the vice presidential slot, so was this it?

Not so much.

“I heard Ryan Braun's name being mentioned,” Biden continued, referring to the Brewers All-Star outfielder whose Thursday night grand slam kept the Brewers tied for first place for a Wild Card spot.

“You know, didn't you all dream of it when you were a kid -- a walk-off grand slam in the playoffs!” Biden exclaimed. “God, almighty, 10th inning!

"Whoa!" Biden continued. "Man, oh man!”

Braun's game-ending round-tripper gave the Brew Crew a vital 5-1 extra-innings win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, keeping the Milwaukee ball club in the thick of the National League playoff race.

“I tell you what, I'd be willing to let him be vice president if he'd let me take credit for that grand slam,” said avid sports fan Biden. “I tell ya, my Lord, you all must be ready today.”

With the firefighters loving every minute of Biden’s baseball banter, the loquacious Blue Hen referenced the Brewers upcoming series with rival Chicago.

“The Cubbies are in town, yeah, OK,” he said. “Well, I wish you all a lot of luck.”

“Man, I tell you, what I wanted to do was not sign autographs on the back of pieces of paper,” the senator said of his childhood dreams. “I was looking to sign autographs on baseballs. I never got that far.”

Actually, Lola,

If you check the ballot, Joe Biden is not running for President.

Now that Old Joe does not have to run from the draft, he is running for...VICE PRESIDENT!

However, I DID vote for Bill Clinton (twice), Al Gore, and John Kerry.

That was during the 34 years I was a registered Democrat.

That changed after Obama became the Democrat nominee through the caucus circus.

Now, I am registered as an Independent and proud to not be associated with the disgrace that was once the proud party of Franklin Roosevelt.

And, I find Obama, as the most liberal voting Senator, to be the worst candidate to be nominated for President (from both parties) in 34 years and a disgrace to American politics.

From Rezko to Wright, Obama offers the worst that America has to offer, and he does not deserve to clean toilets in the White House, let alone be President.

With the Democrat leaders (Pelosi and Reid, specifically) now siding with George W. Bush (who, by the way, was in the Texas National Guard...not hiding from it), it would seem that Obama, Biden, and the rest of the Democrats have now taken up with the Bush administration.

What a bunch of two-faced losers...

Anybody But Obama/Biden...

Anon,

you are obviously not a Hillary supporter, otherwise you would have heeded her call to vote based on the issues and not on who was on the ticket. The issues she supported are far more in line with Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden, than with anything Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin have put forth. Or do you agree with Gov. Palin that women who were raped should be forced to pay for rape kits? If that's your position then you are heartless.

Joe, I admire you that you raised your children when your wife passed away, but I have to admit that you agree that innocent children should be put to death prior to giving them a chance to live.

I am a grandmother who has lost a baby to abortion thanks to people like you.

Really madam? I think rather that your daughter or daughter in law was probably saved, since she made the decision to have the abortion, she probably would have gone and had it anyway even if it was illegal, and she would have had to go to a pretend doctor who performed it with a hanger.

The issue with choice is not about killing babies, rather it is about giving women a choice. I particularly find the practice abhorrent, but I'd rather focus on ways in which to reduce unwanted pregnancies by teaching comprehensive sex education (as in, if you are going to have sex, here's how not to get pregnant) to teenagers and others to ensure that women who would make a choice not to have a baby, have the tools necessary not to become pregnant in the first place.

All we really need to remember about Biden is that he got five (count'em, 5) deferments from the draft and avoided serving in Viet Nam.

At the same time, John McCain did his duty...and more...

Anyboy But Obama/Biden...

So I guess you voted for Al Gore and John Kerry in the last two elections, huh? I mean, the two of them actually went to Vietnam, while Bush Jr. was hiding from the Texas National Guard.

uh, maybe he was gaffeless this day. He threw a no gaffer? Some days he has 2 or 3 gaffes, a walk, but never scores or hits a home run. Hes a lucky lucky man though. The other people in this election are such a draw that no matter what DumbJo does, says, he gets a pas by default.

doesn't anyone else besides me think Barack has dyed his hair? It was going grayer before...

JT my man, i understand you made a commitment to this "oh that joe" series, so you have to keep coming up with quotes of his and call it a gaffe, but it would be really helpful if you could maybe explain what it is that you find gaffe-tastic about the quote? this isn't the first time i've read one of your oh-that-joe posts and had no idea whatsoever what you thought was wrong with what he said. is it because he shouldn't be joking and talking sports during a financial crisis? is it because he shouldn't root for the brewers when obama is from chicago (though he is a sox fan, so that can't be it). is it because last night's game wasn't technically a play-off game? i guess that was one factual error, though for the brewers it may as well be the playoffs with the mets leading the wild card chase. seriously, tapper, what's the deal?

Posted by: this is a gaffe? | Sep 26, 2008 7:20:12 PM

i'm sorry, but this is completely irrelevant.

you guys are just including stuff to keep your silly list going.

this not gaffe. he's connecting with the people.

the locals are loving it.

a VP candidate that can talk baseball and its not even playoff season yet?

i love it.

Posted by: this is not news | Sep 26, 2008 7:16:37 PM

I GOT IT>>>>>>>

McCain drops Palin and Pics up Romney

Obama Drops Biden and picks up Hillary Clinton.....

But, are these moves suppose to make us support them more, or question their decision making skills

In the end....all of these people have to work together to get things done right???

Posted by: Oregon4Obama | Sep 26, 2008 6:56:14 PM

What an idiot.

Hopefully though, this invalidates all of those mail-in Obama-Biden ballots.

After such a debacle and the debates show McCain's substance and Obama's lack of, people will vote for McCain.

Victory is ours muhahaah!

Posted by: John | Sep 26, 2008 6:03:22 PM

Joe Biden was chosen for VP, for his honesty free spirit and his experience!
He’s supposed to make a point when is needed. Sarah Plain was chosen for the position after only one meeting .The decisive factor was only the women’s vote and the prerequisite to be the John McCain cheerleader. She makes only scripted interviews and has very thin Resume. Sarah Plain VP? Thanks but not thanks!

I like Joe more today than I ever did in the beginning. He's real, speaks his mind, and he knows how to connect with hard working Americans. Keep it up!

The Dems are doomed without
Hillary.

Don't waste anymore time.
Let Biden go. There is no
Constitutional issue. It
is an internal problem
for the party to rectify.
Post-haste. Immediately.

What was the gaffe..it was great and it sounds like the locals loved it.

Years ago in Iowa Biden ran into some Packer fans. He said that even though his high school was very close to Philadelphia that the priests were Packer backers and the students heard a lot about the team. His school was run by the Norbertine order whose principal college is St. Norberts located in DePere, Wisconsin which is right next to Green Bay. I also think he wouldn't do a Kerry and refer to Lambeau Field as Lambert (that's the Airport in St. Louis). The bottom line is that Joe can talk to the average Joe and Jane on a lot of things.
