Palin Media Avoidance Watch: Day 9 -- McCain Camp Says She Won't Do Interviews Until It Knows She'll Be Treated with "Deference"

September 07, 2008 9:41 AM

Rick Davis, campaign manager for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., just told Fox News Channel's Chris Wallace that McCain running mate Gov. Sarah Palin won't subject herself to any tough questions from reporters "until the point in time when she'll be treated with respect and deference."

Davis assailed the way the media had discussed Palin and her family in the last week and said the campaign would wait until a less hostile media environment.

So when will she subject herself to questions?

"When we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it," Davis said, praising a Fox News Channel profile of Palin that ran last night.

Why is she scared of answering questions? Wallace asked.

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said, "but you know what? We run our campaign not the news media."

Wallace said inappropriate intrusions into Palin's family and personal life aside, there are legitimate questions about whether she is prepared to be vice president.

"Sarah Palin will have the opportinity to speak to the American people," Davis said. "She will do interviews, but she'll do them on the terms and conditions" the campaign decides.

In fairness, an Alaska TV reporter did get to ask Palin a question Thursday, something along the lines of

"Governor, we feel like we're losing you - are you still going to be there for Alaska?"

How pathetic. Can't play with the big boys?? Is this what we have to choose from?

Governor Palin should begin doing media interviews just as soon as Obama agrees to townhall meetings with McCain. After all, he's at the top of the ticket. Americans deserve to see him "unfiltered" through his adoring media.

When will Obama give an open press conference? It's been months!

If she was really qualified, she would have been on the Sunday shows last Sunday. That was before any of this information about her daughter was known. Actually, not much was known about her at that point.

She will do fine in the interviews. I did fine on my college exams. I know how to cram for exams. So does she.

The truth is that she has zero foreign policy experience. If you believe she does because Alaska is near Russia, then go ahead and vote for her. You're playing Russian roulette with the future of America.

This should outrage the American public; less than 60 days to decide who will be the next President and all these smoke and mirros to prevent access to information. The Fox news infomercial panderng is a joke. When O'Reilly interviews Palin in the SAME manner and tone as he did Obama only then will that be fair and balanced. Quit demanding special treatment. Putin won't!

smb,
I am sure the hypocrites in the Republican party will bring that up next...that she wanted some time with her family. Bull! Republicans are playing games as usual. They are coaching this woman while attacking media bias. Meanwhile, McCain is preaching unity and appearing on the same media shows that they evidently think are biased.

AKA

Until she learns verbetum what she is supposed to say to cover her lack of knowledge.

Yah, right. The MSM fawns over Obambi (can I get you a pillow?), picturing his family in glowing terms at every opportunity as befitting their self-proclaimed messiah. Gov. Palin and her family is savaged in the press, w/ even the vaunted NYT posting misinformation they had to retract since no fact checking was required prior to going to press. Yep, I'd tell 'em to shove it, too.

Read CNN's interview w/ the trooper. He admits all, yet even ABC still refers to "troopergate.: The guy tasered a 10 yr old, drove his patrol car while drinking and killed a moose w/o a license. Usually any of these things would have the MSM screaming into the night, but since Palin is involved, they castigate someone who thought his actions were wrong.

WOW! Talk about ruining your own campaign! She's a public figure, running for public office and American's should know who they are voting for. If the McCain campaign is doing this now before he's even elected - how do you think information from the White House will be? Worse than it is now?

If they are taking this stance, I would suggest to the media to boycott Palin. Interview McCain all they want, but let her dogsled back to Alaska until November.

"Until she's treated with deference"??? Rick Davis, are you kidding??!! If this was the other way around you would be excoriating the Democratic candidate, and the press for coddling him/her. If she is "up to" the job, she'd better be up to answering questions. Of course, guess who has given the fewest press conferences of any modern president - George W. Bush. He's not so good at answering questions either. Hey Rick Davis, aren't you the one who said this campaign is not about the issues? You are an insult to the democratic process.

The Webster definition of deference: respect and esteem due a superior or an elder; also: affected or ingratiating regard for anothers wish. Syn: honor.

Since when is it the role of a journalist or the Press to hold a nominee in "esteem" or to regard their "wish" or to "honor" them. Perhaps John McCain, having carefully managed his relationships with some of the biggest names in media broadcast and in journalism, is used to this "deference." In fact it has been a problem in the campaign for those of us hoping for analysis of positions and policies and not personality. John McCain wants to run an election on "personality" (as per Rick Davis), but wants "no questions asked." This is terrifying!

Samantha,
You may say Obama dodges questions but at least he has appeared in front of the media and had you judge his reaction to those questions. Many times. Why is Palin hiding? Because Republicans are coaching her on how to respond to questions. She is in training....she is simply not ready...Blame the media all you want but McCain appeared today on Face the Nation. Obame appeared on ABC and Biden on Meet the Press. Where was Palin? I guess she didn't want to appear on any those biased media shows, huh?

Posted by: indy_voter | Sep 7, 2008 11:04:19 AM

Come on people! Obama has been asked every question in every possible way about every possible topic over the last 19 months. He's a US Senator and on the Foreign Relations Committee so he's been through every kind of FBI/CIA security investigation there is. There is nothing he is hiding. Get over it!
Sarah Palin will not talk to anyone. We know nothing about her. The McCain campaign does not want us to know who she is or what she stands for. The longer they keep her from talking, the less chance the truth about her will be spread to everyone in the country. As far as I'm concerned that is the most un-American thing of all.

Deference????

News Flash: the U.S. achieved independence from the British monarchy over 110 years ago. OUR politicians DEFER to the American people, not the reverse.

Posted by: PRI | Sep 7, 2008 11:03:40 AM

Since when do reporters treat anyone with "respect and deference"?

Posted by: Aaron | Sep 7, 2008 11:03:15 AM

Fortunately for us, Putin and Ahmadinejad are HUGELY deferential to US leaders, so there shouldn't be any problem for Queen Sarah when those two gentleman come calling. I know I'll sleep better at night knowing she's in charge. No worries there.

Posted by: BMS | Sep 7, 2008 11:02:42 AM

Yeah, I buy this. Pretty bad when you choose a running mate you're too afraid to have on the trail.

Posted by: Sandra | Sep 7, 2008 11:02:40 AM

This is such unbelievable b.s. I can't imagine anyone swallowing this garbage. They're keeping her away from the press because they need time to tutor her in the ways of republican politics so she'll be able to answer questions. Everyone knows that.

Posted by: outtahere | Sep 7, 2008 11:02:39 AM

The McCain Camp went to Staples to buy the book "VP For Dummies". Sarah needs to finish reading it before she can face the media

Posted by: No McCain | Sep 7, 2008 11:01:02 AM

Obama is the obvious choice if you have at least average intelligence, have been paying attention and you are looking further than color. That is the bottom line. If our ocuntry is to have a future as great as it's past, we cannot afford to continue down the road the Republican party has taken us in the past 8 years. We went from a prosperous nation with no debt and worldwide respect for the principles we embody, to a nation deeply in debt and whose leaders blatantly defy everything we stand for whenever it suits them behind our own citizens' backs. The blinders our officeholders have routinely put on in exchange for the financial support of corporate lobbyists has allowed our environmental problems to come to a point where we, our children and grandchildren may not even get to live out their lifespans. I truly pray that even sheltered rural America is waking up this time, and won't repeat the mistakes of 2000 and 2004. The Democratic party is the party of the common people. The Republican party is the party of big money, plain and simple.
