Palin's Boffo Ratings

September 04, 2008 9:58 PM

Nielsen tells us Gov. Sarah Palin's address last night drew almost as many eyeballs as Sen. Barack Obama's did last week.

"More than 37.2 million people tuned in for coverage of the third night of the 2008 Republican National Convention ... just 1.1 million fewer viewers than Barack Obama’s record-breaking speech on day four of the Democratic convention."

This included a big female audience of 19.5 million women — 5.2 million more women than tuned in for Sen. Hillary Clinton's, D-N.Y., speech of day two of the Democratic convention and 6.9 million more than watched Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., accept the Democrats’ vice presidential nomination.

These are numbers that will scare and unnerve Democrats.

Part of the Palin phenomenon is causing the Obama campaign to rally high-profile Democratic women to battleground states, such as Clinton, to Florida on Monday.

I am stunned at the deceptive editing on the interview. Why did Gibson edit out her challenge to the quotation?

ABC Misrepresents Palin Viewers who watched ABC News’ interview with Sarah Palin Thursday night never saw her take issue with a key question in which she was asked if she believes that the U.S. military effort in Iraq is “a task that is from God.”The exchange between Palin and ABC’s Charlie Gibson, in which she questioned the accuracy of the quote attributed to her, was edited out of the television broadcast but included in official, unedited transcripts posted on ABC’s Web site, as well as in video posted on the Internet. But in the version shown on television, a video clip of her original statement was inserted in place of her objection, giving a different impression of how Palin views the Iraq war.In the interview, Gibson asked Palin: “You said recently in your old church, ‘Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.’ Are we fighting a Holy War?”Palin’s response, which appears in the transcript but was edited out of the televised version, was:“You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

I also went and watched Gibson's interview of Obama early on in the Primary races. This site won't allow posting other links but you can find the interview searching "Barack Obama on ABC World News Tonight" He did a very sympathetic piece on his family and background and early dreams and jobs. Done on November 1, 2007, it was not like Obama had not been interviewed by others on these kinds of details. Obama had already been on TIme Magazine cover back in October 23, 2006. So how do these two first interviews for Gibson compare?

My question is this...why is Sarah Palin being hidden from the media? She's been the nominee for 4-5 days and has yet to make a answer a single question or make a single statement that wasn't written for her. Not one.-Rick-
=================================
The answer to your question is in the part of her speech that was not scripted. That's where she described herself as a pitbull with lipstick. That is, one trained by the owner to byte, bark, and lick on command. At training that took 3 days only, and needs to continue, under careful control. Talk about women being used for her looks, once more.

"The democratic party is United."
-----
That's a bad joke. Putting Biden in as VP was a bad joke -- and I expect that Palin is going over better with the unrich than polls run by corporations indicate.

Woman here, completely turned off by her speech. Her first real introduction to the American people and she comes off as a nasty, sarcastic, negative politician. I could care less about her personal drama so wanted to see what she was really about. I found that smug look on her face while she spouted out her vile and vicious comments disgusting.

No way does this independent voter vote for that ticket. They lost me. I used to respect John McCain, 6 months ago, I was positive I would vote for him. Not a chance. Hello Bob Barr.

Curious and willing to give her a fair hearing, I tuned in for the 1st half of Gov. Palin's speech.

I tuned out when she got mean and nasty.

She's not an example I'd want my daughters following.

Message to Sarah: you aren't doing us women any favors by engendering all the worst aspects of politics that men have perpetuated over the years.

Message to John: What a sexist thing to do - to pick a woman to run with you (no matter that she's opposed to most policies a majority of women support) thinking we're so foolish as to vote for you on the issue of her gender alone.

I'm underwhelmed by Palin's numbers. I was one of those 37 million women who tuned in for her speech, and ice floes will fill the River Styx before I cast a vote for a Republican this year.

Why did I watch? Plain old curiosity.

Excuses, excuses for The One. Here are the facts --

Palin's speech was carried on 8 networks.

Obama's speech was carried on 12 networks (half again as many).

It's obvious Obama should have picked Hillary. He'll call her in to help him now, just as he ran and hid behind her before, but there's a big problem with using her now to try to win --

Every time Hillary appears in public on Obama's behalf, voters will be asking themselves -

Why isn't she his VP?
How was his judgment on that decision?
And if he couldn't put aside his ego in order to help himself win, will he be able to put it aside to do what's right for his country in a future situation?

Posted by: marylou | Sep 5, 2008 9:50:00 AM

Jennifer,

The Democrats had two excellent candidates who were in such agreement on what had to be done that it became very difficult which one to chose. The Republicans didn't suffer from that dilemma this time around.

Since you are such a Hillary fan, buck up! She will likely have a very important cabinet position and you will
get to share in the pride of her accomplishments for many years to come!

Americans are so fascinated with Hillary, that they are going to vote for John McCain, rather than the man who cheated Hillary out of the nomination! :-)

Posted by: Jennifer | Sep 5, 2008 6:24:33 AM

Its interesting how fascinated the right still is with Hillary.

OH the Hand Wringing!!!!

lol

I find it hillarious that one person posts so many anti-Obama posts with different IDs.

The democratic party is United.
Obama won fair and square
Hillary will support Obama

The repubs got a snarky lady as VP (out of sheer desperation) and have the gall to say that the democrats are nervous???

LMAO

I was one of all those millions watching palins speech{ and almost all of the others on both conventions}PBS did the best job;although I did'nt need the commentators to tell me what to think, jim lehrer was as allway's good with relevant info.I was eager to see what the republicans had dreamed up to sell this ersatz-woman to the voters. Is this what you want to be responsible for 300 million life's?and while we are busy with this palin soap opera nobody is watching bush and current VP!they are threatening to "punish russia".guess how?By sending them to bed without dinner?oh no;bush is threatening to undo some nuclear arms reduction deal!{i don't know details yet}but I'm sure putin and his buddies are having some good laughs and hoping for McCain/Palin.as for the community organizer JESUS CHRIST; he was also a true liberal!think about that the next time you want to use that word.

Sarah Palin has already peaked. It's all downhill from here, as people begin to learn more about her and wake up to who she really is.

From her speech, we now know why her nickname is Barracuda. But, when it comes to the issues, she just took us for a spin.

Posted by: Not a Fool | Sep 5, 2008 2:42:43 AM

Dems getting fidgety. Brando's character, Terry, in "On the Waterfront"
bemoans his life....."I coulda been
a CONTENDA"! Ohbama will soon be ruing
his VP selection...."I coulda had
Hillary"! Bad "most important first
decision a presidential candidate makes", and a window into the mind
of this rookie.

But then the McCain camp is apparently scared and unnerved of Palin's image becoming undone, which is probably why she won't be doing any more interviews. Her image is as airbrushed and fantasy oriented as her picture of the cover of Vogue.

Posted by: kat | Sep 5, 2008 1:38:21 AM

People tuned in out of necessity to finally see this woman. It was only curiosity and not an indicator of support for the Republican ticket.
It was Palin's coming out party which was all glitter lacking in substance.

Posted by: clarity | Sep 5, 2008 1:33:43 AM

Strange but Palin will bring millions of voters to the GOP. Her T.V. ratings were about as good as Obama's

Biden will bring how many voters to Obama?

Hillary would have brought 18 million plus moderate crossover female republicans to Obama.

What a huge political mistake Obama made by not uniting his party.

McCain actually picked the first female Palin ever in the GOP and created excitement and united his party unlike Obama.

If Obama cannot bring his on party together, how will he bring the nation together?

Posted by: TMav | Sep 5, 2008 1:24:30 AM

Remember Obama only got 1/2 of the votes of the Democratic Party.

The election will be determined by the other 18 million voters that he tossed aside and put in their place, along with independents.

Result:

Obama, Please help me Hillary I need you to help me get the other half of the Democratic Party vote. Oh yea, and the middle class moderates and Latinos.

Again Obama only got 1/2 of the votes from his own Democratic Party.

Why because he did not appeal to the other 18 million. His first real decision in politics was to pick the best V.P., and what a political mistake he picked Biden. It divided the party. Many passionate female democrats will not forget for a long time.

Obama could not even unite the Democratic Party, so how will he unite the nation. Fireworks at the White House?

Palin hasn't spoken one unscripted moment yet and already they have her at the top of the ticket next time around.

Don't you people ever learn?
