Rove on Mayoral Experience

September 05, 2008 10:10 AM

Fox News analyst Karl Rove -- the predictor of the Reagan-esque landslide for George W. Bush in 2000 and the owner of "the math" showing the 2006 GOP congressional surge -- had some interesting observations about Gov. Sarah Palin's qualifications.

She was "Mayor of, I think, the second largest city in Alaska," Rove said of Palin's time at the helm of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population under 9,000.

Watch HERE.

A few weeks ago, however, when Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine was being considered as Sen. Barack Obama's running mate, Rove wasn't as charitable when describing Richmond, Virginia, a city for which Kaine served as mayor, one 25 times bigger than Wasilla.

"He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America," Rove told CBS's Face the Nation."It's not a big town. So if he were to pick Governor Kaine it would be an intensely political choice, where he said, 'You know what? I'm really not first and foremost concerned with "Is this personal capable of being president of the United States."'"

I stole this observation from this brilliant bit from The Daily Show.

When did the truth ever get between the Republican party and voters? Like weapons of mass destruction, the outing of Valerie Plume, and the pillage of the Justice Department under Alberto Gonzales, the truth never really seems to matter. It's all about spin and winning the next election. Leadership? Well, they always point to Ronald Reagan for that, a man who raised taxes 6 times as President and signed a very liberal abortion rights bill as Governor of California.

Bob, the point of Palin's line on the bridge is not did she support it or not, but that she somehow stood up to congress. The press keeps asking 'did she support it?' instead of 'did she stand up to congress?'. She's trying to build her cred as gutsy, and the press is acting like they dont understand the whole point. The fact is she never said anything to congress, the entire story is an out-and-out fabrication, and they let her get away with it by pretending they dont get the real point of the whole thing.

I think we all know Karl said prior to the November, 2006 that he, and he alone, had access to the "real" math and Republicans would win.

Wasilla is the "second largest city in Alaska." Richmond "is not that big a town." So I guess you could say of Fox and Newsweek, their decision to choose Karl Rove means they were not that concerned about accurately informing their viewers and readers.

SOWHAT: Actually, Troopergate is a credible ethics investigation into whether she used her position to have her ex-brother-in-law fired.

Rumors about her daughter, I agree, should be off limits but if she is going to parade her daughter and the hockey papa in the media, which they have done, then it's safe to say that it should be fair game.

As for her ability to be VP when she has a special needs infant, I think that's a very viable concern. It was enough of a concern for Republicans when John Edwards put his campaign ahead of his wife's cancer in 2004.

In the end, we're not going to change each others minds but you do have to stop blaming the media. The media is not the problem. It's the 8 years of the Bush administration as well as the 6 years of Republican rule that are the problem.

Did everybody notice that the RNC used a fake funeral with actors this week in one of their videos?

Republicans can't deal with realities.

Does McCain really think they only have to put some lipstick on their failed policies?

And that's change?

Cartoonists will have a field day with that. I expect to see lots of Old and Tired Elephants in drag with lipstick and high heels.

People will soon realize that underneath that drag, there's still that elephant

John McCain and Sarah Palin don't want to address issues for any of us. Not once was the economy discussed at Republican Convention!! Do they think about average workers??? Today News releases Friday - reach worst levels -worst foreclosures increase, increase in unemployment to 6.1% and is now at highest has been for five years, gasoline rising, electricity cost heating cost up, largest national debt in history of US

QUESTION - Do Republicans care??
John McCain and President Bush recent statments - feel economy stable or shows some improvement
ANSWER: No!!! Never even addressed economy at National Convention!! Whole convention more geared towards no mention of issue - more attention to John McCain's war record and his experience. AND MEDIA ATTENTION ON SARAH PALIN, KARL ROVE DID THIS FOUR YEARS AGO TO TAKE NEWS OFF BUSH.

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISERS
John McCain and Sarah Palin have made statement at convention and again today.
They feel and state common prople are nothing and do nothing. Sarah shame on you!!!!! YOU ARE NOW "THE ELITE" since you are Vice Presidential Candidate!!

BIG PITCH - REGULAR COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS WHO HELP PEOPLE OR ASSIST THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES DON'T DO ANYTHING!! COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY NOR DO THEY SHOW LEADERSHIP SKILLS.

I know exactly what these two think!!! Sarah is new - all has gone to her head - "TOO GOOD NOW FOR REGULAR PEOPLE" And she slams us!! Sarah Palin is now the new "ELITIST" who joined John McCain the old "ELITIST" who can't even remember how many houses he owns.

From a 63 yo white college educated medical professional woman who is registered Republican!! Widowed with two adult married children. I am so disappointed. How dare these two and Republican Party say this about us at the grassroots level!! And your lack of interest in/for the average person. Neither of you mentioned anything about economy at convention!! You don't care!! Both I have found care about more about oil and corporations interests!!

EVERYONE - YES I HAVE A RIGHT TO CRITICIZE SARAH PALIN WITHOUT CLAIMS OF BEING "SEXIST." THESE ARE ISSUES, NOT GENDER RELATED! AND I AM A WOMAN! NATION HAS MAJPOR PROBLEMS! THESE TWO INSULTED/ARE NOT OUT TO HELP AVERAGE AMERICANS!!

ABC News has exclusively learned that Alaska Senator Hollis French will announce today that he is moving up the release date of his investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her office to get the Alaska public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, fired. The results of the investigation were originally scheduled for release Oct. 31 but will now come almost three weeks earlier, according to sources.

Sorry, but the REpugs have picked on the WRONG group of people and they need to shut this down Quick!!

My parish Priest told me he ordered 50 of the "Jesus was a Community Organizer" t-shirts for our youth group. This man is a staunch Republican and he is hopping mad!! He said "When they chose to stone one of us, they chose to stone us all".

This is a bi-partisan call to arms!

Let's look into the divorce papers of Obama's family. Let's see, there were two right?

Posted by: Yourgameletsplay. | Sep 5, 2008 1:10:35 PM

Correction: the facts that disqualify false rumors spread by the Obama campaign, are not rigorously reported as the rumors.

Posted by: SOWHAT! | Sep 5, 2008 1:07:56 PM

Gonz: Obama is the master of false rumors. Problem here is, America is being exposed to these rumors as factual news, without all the facts on all the liberal network and cable news, until the facts come out. At which point, the facts disqualifying the rumors are as vigorously represented as the rumors. Shall we try trooper gate that the Obama camp is trying to push. A trooper who drank in his government car, threatened to kill a citizen, and the list goes on, was not fired by a superior. Pressure to fire this employee was RIGHT not WRONG. So why is Obama going after this, why is he so desperate? Are the real issues far too complicated?

Yup, Yup, Sowhat, VP for a 72 yr old president is an "on-the-job" training position isn't it. Palin has to be tutored first before she can be grilled, eh? Maybe she'll just change address to that "undisclosed location " of Cheney's.

Hiding from the press is a great way to start an administration of transparency. The electorate does not have a right to know who their prospective VP/POTUS is now do they?

Who needs to make an informed choice???

1. Getting 'a' (as you put it) Ivy League education does not make a person inherently superior. There's a good article on that in the Summer 2008 edition of the American Scholar.

2. Did not Bush attend two Ivy Leagues colleges, including Harvard?

Posted by: Gonz | Sep 5, 2008 12:54:23 PM

Yes, as a voter, spectator and Republican Karl Rove prefers Palin over Obama. He therefore speaks to his reasons. Oprah, too as a voter, spectator, Democrat? promoted Obama when most of America didn't know who he was. People of fame vote too. Your point? We had Obama prance out as though he were one of the Beatles, to be adored from a distance and to be available solely to his newly acquired (a la Oprah) celebrity fame. The press, who drooled adoringly from afar as well, was not able to interview Obama, until he became the pop star Oprah made.

It's a picture for you to see-- of showing a balance of supporting the mother and the child. It shows to any common sense person what the family unit means. It shows what values are. It's easy to get (family values or just being there for one another as a family). It was very wrong to put down the daughter as the left and the media are doing. They even ask for dna for the little newborn on some kooky blogs and those people ran with that vile. I think there will be a huge backlash because everywhere you go people complaint about the media being bias and showing hatefulness to certain groups and certain people.

McCain and Palin are both lying through their teeth at every stump speech. The bridge to nowhere...Palin is on the record multiple times supporting it UNTIl federal funding was reallocated. Now it's just a convenient campaign lie that she said, "thanks, but no thanks" to Congress. There's still the bridge to Wasilla that noone's mentioned.

McCain keeps his military records sealed for a reason. The Vietcong code name for him was "songbird." Why are his records still SEALED? The only version of his captivity we have is his own.

Abstinence teaches the value of RELATIONSHIPS.

Posted by: SOWHAT! | Sep 5, 2008 12:43:07 PM

Teaching one abstinence, is sex education. It works and has been proven to work. Yes, there are failures just as there are numerous failures in sex ed and contraception. Most abortions do not occur because of rape or incest. Most occur because of carelessness, even though contraception was available. Those are facts that America needs to face. Abortion is being used as contraception. If a young woman knew her fate would ultimately be pregnancy, she would be more careful. Churches who promote abstinence, have a higher degree of success among their youth, than the sex ed products in our society. Argue your true values, but face the reality.

Posted by: SOWHAT! | Sep 5, 2008 12:40:34 PM

Some polls are showing Palin has even higher positives than all the 3 men. I see Oprah is so afraid that she is refusing to have Palin on her show. Wow!

Posted by: Christie | Sep 5, 2008 12:39:03 PM

It's up to the voters to decide whether they believe, Obama or McCain represents most of their values. Obama has pushed forth his values with his arguments and attacks. What America now knows is this. We do not want to be racist, McCain is not a racist nor does he focus on race; Obama does. America does not want to be sexist; Obama's support has flung the most sexist attacks on women since the mid sixties; you know, the last cultural revolution. McCain has been accused of pandering to women; Well that is definitely something Obama does NOT do though he caters to the RACE factor. McCain is against abortion, pro sex education. Obama is Pro abortion and pro sex education. The difference here, is the value of life. Which does America prefer?

that is a strong argument because republicans have always claim to be the champions of family values. thats hypocritical.

The claim that a young girl having a baby, while being Republican, is hypocritical, is not only a flawed, but an underlying agenda argument. If you think she should abort her baby in order to be a better role model, then say so. I am sure Middle America WOULD NOT AGREE. Left wingers won't say the truth. To them a woman who has an abortion is a better role model than one who has her baby. The Left wing argument.

People think getting a Ivy league degree makes a person inherently superior than those who did not -- this is exactly democrats are loosing for this year. Harvard education does not make a good leader -- it only trains you to think about things in a particular way that those professors like.

the polls already show McCain-Palin convention bounce of 5 to 7 points now. Wait when Palin travels to the small towns and connect with people.

This year should have been a dem year, but the democrats have selected a person who is least likely to win the other half of the America.

the bottom line is trust - who do you think can really deliver. I trust McCain -Palin, not Obama-Biden.

Sowhat

Are you saying Obama does not share the interest of Americans? Can you name one?

SOWHAT: "Far lefties want to focus on superficial issues, McCain is focussing on AMERICAN ISSUES."

Wow. What an utterly meaningless statement - seriously, can you even define what that means, nevermind back it up with facts?

Bob, no one is perfect. NO ONE but when you have a man who was brought up with the teachings of a radical church and has unusual feelings of wearing the American flag pin and will not say the pledge of alliance and supported a state law to not have a doctor in the hospital for a baby being born alive that's not no where in God's platform.

amy: "I have no seen any reports on Obama's school record."

That reflects on your own ignorance, not the media. His time in private schools in Jakarta was heavily reported and researched, particularly as it clearly called out Foxnews as pushing false partisan slander.

His path from a community college, up to Columbia, and ultimately to graduating magna cum laude from Harvard is very well known, and the way he improved himself through clear merit and intelligence is admired by the well-educated portion of his base (who think accusations of "elitism" because he is smart make the accusers look like idiots who apparently want an intellectually slow president).

amy,

you'are right let's shrink from contrasting Obama's Stanford undergrad degree and Harvard post graduate record (not to mention editor of Harvard Law Review) against Palin's 6 university (no extracurricular activity) journalism degree, that would be sexist.

Mike

did you say Palin has skills? Wow!! How do you know?

The far left is claiming Jesus? The majority of Obama's supporters are NON RELIGIOUS. THats fine, just tell the truth. Obama does NOT represent the interests of MOST AMERICANS.

Far lefties want to focus on superficial issues, McCain is focussing on AMERICAN ISSUES.

Posted by: SOWHAT! | Sep 5, 2008 12:14:07 PM

The far left is trying to convince Middle America that their values are shared. GIVE US A BREAK! Anyone notice how the degrading Rap industry has lost a lot of influence since the Republicans have been in power? I think that is a very attractive fact for MOST Americans. Or the entertainment industry that brough us Pulp Fiction pop culture influence, also deminished. It all depends, what side of America do you want to have your children influenced by?

"Jesus was a Community Organizer"

Remember Jesus said: "I have no kingdom. In this world, I'm through. "

Where has world come to? For the sake of presidency people compare themselves with Jesus.

I apologize for the typos...

Christie,

I didn't expect a response to Matthew 25 Network's posiotn. Just ignore the truths you don't wish to acknowlege.

Christie: "A community volunteer does not go around and brag nor boast or use that about themselves if they are truly sincere from where I come from... He was getting people out to vote for his party."

I know many people who are proud of their work in the community and talk about it in an effort to encourage others to also participate. By your metric, my Priest is quite the arrogant blowhard trying to get people involved in helping the needy - how dare he lead by example!

It also seems a bit disingenuous to disparage a candidate for including his community work on his resume - would you prefer he not discuss it at all? In that case, people might start spreading lies - as you are doing when you say that he was just "getting people out to vote for his party." His work included: "helping set up a job training program, a college preparatory tutoring program, and a tenants' rights organization in Altgeld Gardens."

But perhaps he did all that two decades ago just to get ready for his presidential run in 2008.

what is wrong with Palin's education? I have many friends in Oregon who are just un-traditional and went to several schools before graduating. What is more disturbing?

using drugs to battle self-struggle or, moving from schools to figure out academic interests?

I have no seen any reports on Obama's school record. How about Biden's school record?-- his plagiarism record is still in Syracuse university law school. Anybody talking about that?

The more the media is digging with those irrelevant private info, the more people will be turned off. My friends are no longer reading the newspaper for informat
