Seemingly Nervous About Palin's Popularity, New Obama TV Ad Attacks McCain, Palin as Un-Mavericky

September 08, 2008 5:09 PM

The Obama campaign is issuing a response TV ad to McCain's "Mavericks" ad released this morning. (Linked to in previous post.)

Want evidence the Obama campaign is worried about Gov. Sarah Palin? Look no further than this ad, which attacks her, too.

Here's the script:

Obama VO:  I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message.

ANNOUNCER:  They call themselves mavericks. Whoa. Truth is ... they’re anything but. John McCain is hardly a maverick ... when 7 of his top campaign advisors are Washington lobbyists. He’s no maverick when he votes with Bush 90 percent of the time.

ANNCR: And Sarah Palin’s no maverick, either. She was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it.

(This shows a picture of Palin, campaigning for governor, holding up supportively a Bridge to Nowhere-supporting T-shirt.)

ANNCR: Politicians lying about their records?

(This shows the headline: “A NAKED LIE” - The New Republic, 9/08/08)

ANNCR: You don’t call that maverick ... you call it more of the same.

The major news media are not asking the candidates questions about their platforms. And they are treating Palin like a "hot potato" -- not asking any questions. Wake up! This is the future of the US! News media, do your job and ask questions of EVERYONE.

Kinda like handing a spanner to a pit bull and asking it to fix your car when it’s concept of fixing a car is peeing on the wheel-caps isn’t it?.

That’s of course is you still have wheel-caps on your car after someone not to be mentioned returns from Iraq and needs them to sell for another snort of cocaine or OxyContin ;-))

After watching gov Palin's interview I am scared. The combination of her total lack of experience and ultra conservative narrow minded views combined with the temper and backward thinking of John McCain is going to push this country to the point od no return if they become elected.

Posted by: Tom | Sep 12, 2008 10:54:23 AM

Obama is his own worst enemy. It is his clumsy mouth, influenced by obvious election panic that will put McCain and Palin in the Whitehouse. Obama can't handle stress...therefore he is no leader.

Posted by: Realist | Sep 11, 2008 8:27:51 PM

Since when does responding to attacks qualify someone as being "nervous"? Particularly when some of the attacks are just outright lies?

Why is no one calling the Republicans on their incredible hypocrisy? After months of needling Obama for lacking experience and being nothing but a good speaker and a "celebrity," for VP candidate McCain picks someone even LESS experienced, whose sold appeal seems to be... being a celebrity. Wow. I guess they're admitting they were wrong about Obama. All they have left to go after him with is LIES.

VOTE MCCAIN / PALIN

WHAT'S IMPORTANT IS THAT THE WAR IN IRAQ IS WON - WE SHOULD STAY THERE 100 YEARS (OR MORE) IF NECESSARY

WE DON'T REALLY NEED MONEY, AMERICA HAS TONS OF IT!

HAVING TROUBLE DECIDING WHETHER TO EAT OR PAY FOR YOUR MEDICATION? DO YOU HAVE A HEART CONDITION, TROUBLE BREATHING, OR ARE A PSYCHOPATH THAT COULD KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR MEDS? TOUGH! WE NEED THAT MONEY TO FIGHT THE WAR IN IRAQ!

WE WANT SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS CONTROLLING OUR GOVERNMENT POLICIES
(THAT'S SOMETHING VERY GOOD)

THE ECONOMY IS STRONG, EVERYTHING IS FINE

I'M OK, YOU'RE OK

THINGS ARE GREAT THE WAY THEY ARE
SO LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY!

VOTE MCCAIN / PALIN

BECAUSE WE'RE GREAT

AND AMERICA IS DOING GREAT

News flash: Polls are stating that Polar Bears too are shifting to the Reb party.

Be scared.. Dem.. be very scared.

Actual quotes from the Polar Bears in Alaska:

'We liked the attention and hoopla we got in Alaska when our name was being tossed around on the endangered-list. If we get removed from the list, we may become famous!".

"It's our aim to be fur coats in the white house one day.. and with Palin setting that fashion trend, it's a real possibility and exciting!"

' "Personal discovery and growth and journey to make postive changes as a prez!" Get real. It hurts the brain to think for yourself and grow-- and as polar bears we need to conserve that energy. Just follow the crowd.. The Reb party is it!'

Posted by: Emerald | Sep 9, 2008 4:44:19 PM

I don't think it can be argued that when Bill Clinton was President, we were better off as a country than we are now. McCain, is no Bill Clinton. Stop making excuses to vote for someone who you know isn't the best candidate for President, just because you want to vote against a man because he doesn't look like you, or hunt like you, or because he is not a lipstick wearing bitpull. Do what is right for you and your live as well as the other American that deserve real change.

Posted by: victoryforobama | Sep 9, 2008 3:58:18 PM

Obama is such a liar. He wouldn't know a truth if it came up and bit him. He's the candidate who was calling for change
- and he selects Biden who is owned by MBNA and the epitome of a Washington insider. Biden and Obama ( or father and son ) are 2 of the most devious hypocritical politicians ever. If Obama wins ( or cheats his way ) into the presidency, It will be a pleasure to contact his fawning media when he screws up. It may become my full-time job.

NOW a Dem!

The Reb party now reminds me of the teacher who never belived in you... jeering at the Dem's personal discovery, et. all... >. Putting a fresh gender spin does not fool many despite the polls..

The Dem party reminds me of the teacher who belived and inspired you...

So THINK ! & make personal discoveries and change the world for even better.. sieze the day!!!

Obama was first against Florida's votes counting before he was for them counting--'course he had the nomination locked up by then.

Pundits a-plenty! Where is Edward R. Morrow when you need him? Guess with the other journalist as there don't seem to be many questions about substance or follow up questions to oblique answers.

William F. Buckley had his opinions, but when he held a debate both sides were expressed for the audience to evaluate. Now, media biased, leading questions make it apparent which side the questioner is on, and it is not the audience's.

Hopefully the race-gender-age arguments will lead to enough bashing, that clear platforms will emerge so the elected party can be evaluated for the next 4 yrs..

Billy Bob, Florida where the DNP now wants our votes.

I just don't get Republicans. Your country has sufferred a lot because of your very own party and now you people want to dig in to a deeper hole of economic adversities. If USA flunk it is because of their own people. There is somebody who has a comprehensive plan since the beginning of the campaign on how to fix the country, and there is this old wrinkle guy with one of his feet is already in the graveyard, lies, tries to mimic the other person plans and invented himself as somebody else to get elected, and you Republicans choose the wrinkle guy, with nothing to offer.
I think Americans are smarter than this. Loyal to your party is something, but loyal to the future of your country should be first.

Then care to explain why Keating has bundled 5 million for McCain's campaign? Yes that same Keating of Keating 5 fame.
Where's your maverick now?

As for the post about why is it BET only covered the DNC, that's called knowing your demographic. The question I would pose to you is why was the RNC receiving 5x the coverage of the DNC. What are YOU afraid of?

As for the cultural war, the ones fueling it are the Obama camp and the Democrats. Ask yourself why did BET (Black Entertainment Television) cover the Democratic convention and not the Reupublican convention?

What are they so afraid of?

Frankly I can’t see what difference it will make who actually wins the election if as predicted, the US dollar plunges to the value of monopoly money, considering that it’s being printed without any standard backing. If McSame wins however, he will have Annie Oakley there taking out her moose-gun to protect him from the public who will be enraged by the loss of their homes and their inability to even buy food with the severely devalued dollar.

Whosoever wins will most probably not see their term out in the resulting social unrest, however a Republican government would probably be much more effective and brutal in suppression of any resulting public insurrection.

The collapse of the US $ is considered inevitable, because even if the iraqi adventure is terminated, the 3.5 trillion $ the US has accumulated in international debt will be impossible to resolve or at least will leave a pitiful legacy that will take many future generations of Americans to pay off.

I do however feel so sorry for the poor & middle classes who will be fatally hurt by losing everything they own. The GOP & corporation executives responsible for the whole financial mess will no doubt survive by swiftly converting their assets into Euro and stashing it into Swiss Bank accounts.

I do not think that even Obama will be capable of rescuing the US from the predicted calamity, but with a McCain continuance of an financially unsustainable war policy a $ crash will be surely guaranteed.

I honestly cannot see how anyone with a single ounce of common sense could be taking McBush seriously. I mean really, lets think about it for a minute.

Posted by: Violet | Sep 9, 2008 12:39:32 AM

Palin was FOR "the bridge to nowhere", then she was against it. She ADORED sen. Stevens, now she avoids him like the plague. Just learned today that the bridge was nixed, BUT, Alaska got all that money anyway. How do you like them apples? How do you feel about a mini population, oil rich state getting millions and millions of tax dollars from the rest of us? Ear-mark Sarah will find a way do divert even greater sums to her rich friends up there. If she is so wonderful, how come it's a REPUBLICAN legislature that is investigating her. Has she been back there since old man McCain picked her? Is the "first dude" a stay-at-home mom because Ms conservative doesn't get home a lot? All her worts will come out soon enough.

This is very stupid, the truth is the truth! No matter what anybody says at the end of the day we believe what we want to believe. If you like living the way you have been for the last 8 years vote McCain. If you would like to live better and live the way you did when Bill Clinton was president vote Obama. Its that simple and no one is wrong. Your vote depends on what you think is right and what you believe the truth is. Its not a black or white issue or a woman or a man issue its about the truth. I feel the truth is that Obama has been chosen to make a difference in all of our lives. Everybody will benefit from Obama because he stands for change.

Rodney

McCain has a history that frequently challenged his own party.

Obama never has challenged his own party.

McCain is much more moderate and has been over the last 20 years.

Obama is THE most liberal member of the US Senate.

The campaign notwithstanding, this is how they are likely to govern. It's not what you say you are, it's what you have done.

McCain has taken no earmarks. Obama took $740 million in earmarks last year, gave to Michelle's employers after she a got a big raise.

That's not in debate.

Thats just the way it is.

"* I'd like to know her view on abortion. If a teenager becomes pregnant, should she have a choice to keep the baby. We understand what her personal feelings are, but what should the country's policy be? Would she favor overturning Roe v. Wade?"

Palin favors contraception being taught in school along with abstinence. She is against abortion unless it would save the life of the mother. She is not for completely eliminating abortion- that would be in conflict with her stated position.

Seemingly Nervous About Palin's Popularity, New Obama TV Ad Attacks McCain, Palin as Un-Mavericky

WOW THAT HEADLINE IS SUBTLE.

"Alaska Democrats gave credit to Gov. Palin for helping to kill the Bridge to Nowhere."

Flash: Alaska Democrats call Obama a liar!

Posted by: drjohn | Sep 8, 2008 7:41:31 PM

I feel that I don't know Palin at all. After all, before her, the newest commodity was Obama, but even he has been under the spotlight for 19 months during a very rigorous primary campaign. In contrast, Palin is a complete unknown. To be honest, I never heard of her before McCain chose her. Therefore, I think Gibson has a key role to play (and, it is only further underscored by the fact that access to Palin seems so limited). so, since it is unclear when, and even if, more accessibility will be provided, I hope Gibson addresses a few key questions:

* what does Palin consider to be her most significant accomplishments as mayor of Wasila and governor of Alaska?

* what would she like to accomplish in the first four-years of a McCain administration? what issues attract her interests? what does she see as her potential role in a McCain administration?

* about her apparent flip-flop on the Bridge to Nowhere. Is it a flip-flop? If so, would she like to re-word her speeches in any way to be more accurate?

* I'd like to know her view on abortion. If a teenager becomes pregnant, should she have a choice to keep the baby. We understand what her personal feelings are, but what should the country's policy be? Would she favor overturning Roe v. Wade?

* We understand that she is in favor of drilling in ANWAR. Would she be interested in expanding that to any off-shore site in the US? To what extent does she believe that this supply of oil could make us independent of the Middle East? Will it relieve 10%, 50%, 90% of our dependence?

* Is it accurate that she has sought out (successfully) federal money for projects in Wasila? Does she feel that such fundraising is inappropriate? Would she be in favor of, as John McCain has said, "vetoing any bill with pork in it"?

Posted by: Truth17 | Sep 8, 2008 7:38:29 PM

Didn't both Obama and Biden SUPPORT the Bridge to Nowhere?

Posted by: beth | Sep 8, 2008 7:36:57 PM

Palin has cut back on pork-barrel project requests, but in her two years in office, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. And as mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

Posted by: rodney | Sep 8, 2008 7:30:44 PM

The back-and-forth among bloggers here is vicious. I understand that emotions are intense. But, I assure you that both campaigns are run by professionals who are polling and making calculated judgments on how to best make their case. We should be spending time being more thoughtful and evaluating real information. This nonsense about who is scared and who is going to wipe who in debates is sort of useless to a more productive dialogue and decision-making about the future of our country. We should demand more of our politicians... but, ultimately a democracy depends on we the people. Can we be more civilized and provide meaningful commentary.

Posted by: rodney | Sep 8, 2008 7:26:53 PM

Good ad. Short. Accurate. Let the people hear the facts. It is a fact that Palin supported the Bridge to Nowhere, and then changed her mind when it was no longer popular. It is a fact that McCain's team is heavily loaded with lobbyists and Bush advisers. There is no disputing the facts. So, while the McCain campaign may come out with a counter ad, it will be one that changes the topic... it won't address these two facts.

I find this rather amusing. The 'more' obama chooses to stomp on Palin the WOMEN of America see right through him and his entire campaign. They (the obama camp) should have done more homework. I can't wait till Palin SLAMS them hard on this one. This is gonna be good! Wait and Watch. :)

Well unless they let the media have access to her, I guess we won't be finding out.

Oh no, please don't give a shallow version of the facts and try to denigrate McCain and Palin. Please, please, it hurts so much, Obama...you will win for sure if you keep this kind of stuff up. Can't wait until you win by doing these kind of ads. Oh, and make sure you continue to you point out how inexperienced and uninformed Palin is, just keep doing it. That's the surefire winner. They just don't get it, do they?

By the way, Obama, you voted 40-50% with George Bush. Does that make you a 50-60% "chance on change?" I guess that's a little better.

So here is the scoop: Obama came out as a new face. He was so under qualified, how could he actually get people to vote for him? He used Hope and Change to reel people in. He was the one who would change the government, if given the chance. He painted Hillary as the same old Washington. He painted McCain that way too. So what if they had made a difference in the world, they were not new, they were just like every other bad person that Obama could think of. THEN...Palin! Not only was she a fresh face, new to Washington but SHE HAD ALREADY STARTED TO CHANGE THE WORLD!

Palin has proven that Obama had the chance to make a difference in his short time in politics and instead he did nothing. Oh wait he did vote "present" 130 times while in the senate.

Obama keep your change I want Palin-McCain 2008

It reflects the sorry state of the media that Obama should be running an ad to point out the lies that McCain and Palin are spinning. If the media was doing its job, Palin would not be able to get away with saying that she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere when in fact she actively lobbied for it.

This is sad. The more Obama attacks Palin the more we love her.

Sorry Obama your mask has been removed. We see the real Obama underneath. All talk and no actions to back it up. You had a nice marketing gimmick for a while though.

McCain and Palin rock! They are the mavericks that we will vote for!
