Shot Through the Heart

September 05, 2008 12:56 PM

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., tonight attends a $30,800 per person fundraiser at the Garden State manse of rocker Jon Bon Jovi.

Then-Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., attended similar receptions at the rock star's Middletown, N.J., home during their ill-fated runs.

Valerie Bertinelli, sadly, will likely not be there.*

* Yes, I am aware she used to be married to Eddie Van Halen, not Jon Bon Jovi. It was a joke. A bad one, I guess.

Rock Star's don't make you win the election. They are just a big show and this band has been around a long time. Of course Obama likes rock bands because they have been known to be on drugs. And most of them can't sing. They need the backup to cover it up. Bruce Springsteen never could sing but this generation don't know the difference.

scaredtodeath: I think you got that all wrong. Cindy was not a heavy drinker, but I do know that Obama was along with his drug habit. Cindy's problem was she was addicted to painkillers, not cocaine. People that are in pain can be addicted to painkillers because the pain is severe. But a person on cocaine can become an addict for years. Obama started his habit at age 17 and was an addict for a long period of time.

Who cares how many homes McCain has. What has that got to do with the election. And maybe he didn't want to state how many he had. Its no one's business and people shouldn't ask. McCain is campaigning to become president not a real estate broker. And most of those rock stars are on drugs and booze like Obama was in his younger days. They live a wild life and this band is known for that. Plus the Palin-Biden debate is going to attract millions of viewers and Palin will give Biden a run for his money. She is a good match for both Obama and Biden and McCain made the right choice. They are drawing crowds now that McCain did no do before. He has a good chance of winning this election. And the women in Florida are boycotting Oprah which is good for Palin.

Jake, it isn't a bad joke it was just something that doesn't make any sense at all? I mean is it some inside joke or something?

If you inherited lots of fortunes from your parents, it's none of anybody's business how you'd spend it.
Cindy adopted her daughter from an orphanage in Bangladesh. The girl was sick at that time .
This girl survived because of her.

Posted by: catleya | Sep 6, 2008 1:46:10 AM

Cindy didn't become rich from stealing tax payers money. It is hers. I think if your parents left you money like that you wouldn't not be complaining either so stop the jealousy.

How many homes do Y O U own?

How much do you contribute monthly to Obama?

None of this is my business... just as none of your comments about Cindy McCain are any of yours.

She is a woman who has given a lot of time and a lot of her money to help children with birth defects.

The money she inherited from her father allows her to do this but she does not HAVE to.

She adopted her daughter Bridget and has given/is providing her with a life filled with hope and possibilities.

She has done the same for other children as well.

The money she spends on her clothes keeps dress designers and store keepers and fabric manufacturers and seamstresses in business.

Same goes for the houses.

She takes NOTHING from you.

Obama says you're supposed to refrain from Dissing the wives and families of candidates.

I guess he only meant it in behalf of Michele!

But it seems a bit hypocritical to me with all the talk of selling planes on ebay and ousting personal cooks, for you on the other hand to walk on dirt with $500 shoes and not being able to keep track of how many houses you own. Dontchya think.
_________________

YES. I DO think!

And you are mixing apples with avacados!

The sale of the plane and the excising the cook from the Governor's staff was to save the state money.

It had nothing to do with personal gain or, indeed, personal worth.

That type of information should be duly noted for the public record.

However, the use of one's own money for expensive shoes is nobody's business but your own !Nor is it any of your business when there are situations wherein either because of genetic reasons or inflicted injury there might be a very real need for specially lasted shoes.

But the showering of outrageous quantities of money on publicity and not-necessarily fair play...... should, in my opinion by limited if by nothing else then certainly by as candidate's sense of propriety.

Obama has outspent every other candidate in this year's elections, and Axelrod has done an excellent job of runnign his campaign! Yet dollar per dollar, I don't think he has gotten his money's worth!

Perhaps, that's because he's not worth all those dollars!

Posted by: geevill | Sep 5, 2008 11:03:32 PM

Let's talk about the second wife, Cindy, who he applied for a marriage license with before he even divorced his first poor disabled wife that waited for him while he was a POW. Cindy, you know the one that stole prescription drugs from the NGO she was helping and blamed it on the doctor and what about the Keating 5? But, let's talk about Cindy's $300,000 outfit that she wore to the convention, the first night that she spoke when she was with Laura Bush, although I think Cindy spoke every night. That was probably put on her American Express with the other charges that came to $750,000 for one month and her daughter's charges of $50,000 for one month. Talk about being out of touch. How many homes to you own?

questioner,

I agree it is selfish to purchase a hair cut for $400, I also don't know what it took to build that stage in that football stadium for the democrats, but if indeed the DNC and Obama decided to splurge beyond the usual money splurge dedicated to political conventions on that setup then I'm not in agreement with that either.

More encouraging economic news from Bush/McSame. Unemployment reached a five year high last month as 84,000 Americans lost their jobs. 9.2% of Americans are either making late mortgage payments or are in foreclosure.

I do find it offensive, however, when a politician is comfortable spending millions of dollars "donated" by supporters who are way less than wealthy... to show off his big ears and ego in the biggest, gaudiest arena he can find!

______________

I agree with the above!

This was the first year I sat (in front of a TV) and watched the Republican convention.

I didn't understand the silly hats, but I DID understand the support McCain has come up with not only from his many friends and compadres, but also from outside the Republican clan.

And I was impressed by the enthusiasm which and (most of )the speeches which rang out in his behalf; They were not just words,,, empty words; they were incident specific and goal oriented and worth listening to.

In all, I was surprised at the excitement generated by what I thought was the party of old men ;-).

I was wrong!

So tell me please.

How much did THIS convention cost as compared to Obama's last week?

Just for your information: the saying goes "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil". Having a lot of money is not evil - wealthy people play an important part in society since they are able to devote their funds to charitable causes and improving their society. What is evil is hoarding money selfishly and seeking to devote it to selfish causes — Perhaps $500 dollar dress shoes might ring...

Posted by: Ryan C | Sep 5, 2008 4:50:00 PM

Money is the root of all evil as the saying goes. So that also means that the evil and money go together. Obama should be so proud. He is in the middle of both money and evil.
He also thinks he is a rock star. He is more like that Styrofoam fake Greek column on his Denver stage.

lolol I am loving it. Obama just keeps proving more and more that he is just another gasbag as usual politician in Washington. What about McCain attacking his very own party about the lobbyists, etc? I don't recall Obama making similar comments at the convention, do you? Yea, he wants change already! What a joke! 8 years is not long enough to keep the Dems out of the White house when they keep giving us losers like the last few elections for President. My husband, "Obama said that they women will get over it." When he was asked two days after the primary ended as to what he was going to do about the women he had alienated. My husband said, "Well, I'm not a woman and I am not getting over it!" lolololololol

Posted by: Mary Anne | Sep 5, 2008 3:54:00 PM

I love it! It shows Obama as what he truly is, Washington politics as usual, and not the big change person he claimed to be. It was all a gimmick! But, Obama going to a mansion fundraiser. Not him! He is one of the common people like the rest of us! What a joke! While Obama was stumping about change, change, change, etc. Nancy Pelosi was hosting a big fatcat corporate contributor's list, in another building. And the corporate jets brought high profile people in for the convention and guess who was the first to walk off of the plane? Prune face Kerry and he avidly supports Obama and is giving Obama advice about his campaign now. The kiss of death for any campaign! Good riddance to bad rubbish! I hope Kerry can do for Obama what he did for himself, cause Obama to lose! I will dance in the streets!

According to Rasmussen’s latest tracking poll, Palin has higher favorability ratings than either Obama or McCain. She has solid favorable majorities from men (65%) and women (52%).

And when it comes to a comparison of Palin’s and Obama’s experience as a preparation for the Presidency, Obama only beats her by four points overall, only by nine points among women, and trails by three among men. Attacking Palin’s experience backfired on Obama.

I have a brother who works in finance...

And he knows that America needs to restore its infrastructure, its employment base, fund education, regulate the markets, fix healthcare, and get America back on track.

He's not an internationalist. He wants to build a strong economy here. Hence, he supports Obama.

If you talk to globalists, they tend to support McCain... because it means they can invest in a wider, more international portfolio... and the less money you have to spend to get this the better. If American workers suffer, it doesn't effect their prosperity in the least... because their money is in other countries.

It is really sad that McCain says "Country First" because he doesn't mean it.

"Too bad Obama is disproportionately funded by people from the top 1 percent of Americans, who own nearly 40 percent of the nation's wealth ands who account for more than 80 percent of campaign contributions above $250. Through April of 2008, the Campaign Finance Institute reports, Obama received more than $89 million in contributions of $1000 or more, just $8 million less than McCain's total take ($97.3 million).

According to the Center for Responsive Politics Obama's top contributors include Goldman Sachs (#1 at $571,000), UBSAG (#3 at $365,000), JP Morgan Chase (#4 at $362,000), Citigroup (#5 at $358,000), Lehman Bros. (#7 at 4319,000), Google (#8 at $318,000), multinational corporate law firm Sidley Austin LLP (#10 at $294,000)and nuclear energy powerhouse Exelon (#15 at $236,000}."

Thank you for demonstrating that the rich and Wall Street have full confidence in Barack Obama giving him so much money even though they know he is going to raise their taxes.

Why does Wall Street love Obama (dow climbed last week during Thurs and Friday) and hate McCain (dow dropped last 2 days)?

"Obama has raised the most via "non lobbyist" YET SPECIAL INTEREST money than ANY candidate."

Obama has raised the most money in the history of campaigning so this is a rather stupid statement.

I agree its likely he raised more "special interest money" than McCain because he raised twice as much as McCain in the first place.

Of course Obama's "special interests" are teachers, lawyers and doctors.

McCain's special interests are the oil industry and lobbyists.

"Is there some sort of limit that makes $30,800 a logical (or legal) amount? That is such an odd figure."

Joint fundraising.

McCain’s use of so-called joint fundraising committees is unprecedented in presidential politics, and it highlights his reliance on the Republican National Committee and its state affiliates. Obama and his Democratic allies are likewise preparing to increase their use of the joint committees.

McCain has six joint fundraising committees. Federal Election Commission data filed last week show the committees have received more than 1,000 donations of $25,000 or more — including many from investment firm executives as well as President Richard Nixon’s grandson and a director of Freddie Mac, not to mention the owners of several professional sports franchises.

There are two joint committees boosting Obama, with nearly 500 contributors who have given $25,000 or more — a big-donor base heavy with trial lawyers and corporate executives, as well as owners of the Minnesota Twins and Boston Celtics, the doctor who performed the first testicle and ovary transplants in the U.S., and actors Edward Norton and Samuel L. Jackson.

The joint committees often corral checks at receptions and dinners that feature entry fees as high as $70,100 a head — many times the legal contribution limit to the candidates themselves. That eye-popping fee is possible because the joint committees are comprised of multiple groups, each of which can take a separate maximum contribution, including various combinations of the candidates’ campaign committees, their compliance committees, and national and state party committees. Plus, joint committees have the added benefit of synchronizing candidates’ finances closely with their respective parties in a manner watchdogs say skirts both coordination rules and contribution limits that were intended to limit the influence of wealthy donors.

riley: "Obama likes to waste money and why should the rich get to keep the money they worked for?"

Really? Can you cite how he likes to waste money? And the government will already take care of you, as long as you have several million dollars invested in a large corporation like Bear Stearns that is. And if the rich earn every cent based soley on the sweat of their brow, then they are free to move to that low-tax mecca Somalia and continue earning money. If there wealth is directly supported by the stability, infrastructure, and societal assets of the United States, it seems fair they pay in a bit.

As it stands - well, Warren Buffet himself pointed out that in 2006 he paid 17% of his $46,000,000 income in to support the US. His secretary paid in 30% of her $60,000 income. That is what Republican's call fair.

Enviro: "Shouldn't it be mentioned that Obama only gets $2300 from this per person. The rest goes to the DNC."

It certainly should be mentioned. Particularly in light of the RNC's tremendous cash advantage over the DNC since all the big corporate money that in the past would go directly to McCain is being funneled to the RNC, ironically to get around the McCain-Feingold funding "reform" bill.

Perhaps you all missed the memo where he raised almost $10 million in 24 hours since Palin gave that speech. She did more for party unity than anyone at the DNC convention. Now, we definitely know that incompetence is back on the GOP ticket. She is a liability for McCain and Obama-Biden are skillfully exploiting it. Biden does 3 stops a day in battlegrounds and she can't even do one on her own. Biden does multiple interviews each day and she can't show up for one. She is a disaster and the GOP's defeat in 2008 will be a just and deserved result for 8 years of ideological, corrupt, mendacious and incompetent leadership.

The truth is: it turns out that while Obama was a community organizer after college, Palin need 2 extra years of classes before a year as a quasi-employed Wasilla sportscaster.

It's totally sad that McCrankie is running around talking about how she sold the plane on ebay for a profit. Shows how clueless these 'mavericks' are...

Obama only gave 1% of thier $4 million dollars of earnings from last year so Obama is probably using the $$ he took in from campaign contributions.

Hey Ryan -

But at least it is Cindy's $$$. It's funny that in this country people take risk with thier $$ in business and when they succeed and create jobs etc. we want to penalize them.

Mackenzie Phillips won't be able to make it either after her drug bust. I bet Obama and his rock star friends are disappointed.

Bertinelli is the former spouse of Edward Van Halen. Classic Rock. It's all sounds the same to me, too.

Yes Jake,

Bon Jovi, wasn't married to Valarie Bertanelli. That was Eddie Van Halen as Poopadoo pointed out. They got divorced because Eddie couldn't get anything to eat as long as Valarie was home.

Shouldn't it be mentioned that Obama only gets $2300 from this per person. The rest goes to the DNC.

Maybe I'm out of the loop but are you confusing Bon Jovi with Van Halen?
