Sitting Room Only for Obama in Green Bay
September 22, 2008 2:53 PM
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin packed the house last week in Green Bay, Wis., at the Resch Center.
Not so today in the same arena with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., as ABC News' Sunlen Miller captured in these photos.
UPDATE: The Chicago Sun-Times has more on the low turnout for Obama in Green Bay.

It does not metter who is first ....
MCain man of trust, even we dont agree on everything!!! We must have balance of power!!! We can not have all power in Democrats hands, it will be a tragedy!!!!!! Obama and democratic Congres, who can not or will not do anything for last 2 years, just like current"going down" economy mass ,under Democrats watch and approval- oh YES.!!! I just seen the inflated polls stating that Obama leads McCain 52% to 43%. Not so. McCain was leading Obama in about three or four states and I don't believe that has changed. Its a gimmick by the networks to try and make people believe Obama is the best choice but on Thursday when Palin starts her campaigning again watch the networks change.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Sep 24, 2008 9:31:44 AM
Kimberly: I am a democrat voting for McCain also. However, I have voted for a republican for Illinois because a democratic governor doesn't work well for the City of Chicago. And that's what we need again. I believe McCain is the best to run this country not Obama who missed his senate seat over 130 times and always voting present. He was too busy reading books on MLK and planning his run for the presidency because he wanted to make history. He feels if MLK did it he can do it too. Not so. He should stop walking in someone else's shoes and walk in his own.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Sep 24, 2008 9:29:48 AM
Cathy: Yes, Obama is a know nothing, do nothing and says nothing. If elected Biden will do the talking while Obama stands still. That's the highly educated college graduate that copies speeches from RFK and MLK for his platform. Doublecrossed Hillary with Nancy Pelosi to sway the superdelegates to vote for him. Nancy probably threatened the superdelegates if they didn't switch their votes. I hope republicans take back the house to get rid of her.

dl: Face it. Obama is not the celebrity anymore. He thought he had it in the bag but got fooled after Palin was chosen. And no matter what the inflated polls say, Obama is losing ground and its a gimmick to change voters minds from McCain to Obama. The blacks were complaining about whites being racist if Obama loses. Do they think that all white people should vote for Obama because he is half black. I don't think so.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Sep 24, 2008 9:17:00 AM
Karen: You are so right. Obama is losing gound so the networks increased his lead to 52% and 43$ for McCain to make the public believe that Obama will win the election. Its a gimmick to try and change the voter's minds against McCain/Palin. I am not falling for their tricks. Chris Matthews got bounced because he was very bias and promoted Obama over Hillary and McCain. But in the end I believe McCain will win the election.

I found it fascinating that Sarah drew 60,000 people at her rally in Florida and not one band, or any free food. I supported Hillary, I am now voting for McCain/Palin. Women in this country have been unrepresented for far too long. Yet look where we stand, we're over half the population.
I am sick of having my uterus held hostage to get me to vote a certain way. Roe V Wade is going nowhere. How'd that work out for Bush? Pro-Choice is respecting every woman's right to chose. Not just those we agree with. Or one choice. It means respecting those beliefs or not coming back to whine when they don't respect ours.
Also there were not just Democrat women at those bra burning ceremonies. There were women from every policitical belief/party. I was there. I was a young teenager, but I was there. It was women coming together to lift each other up to stand and say we have a voice! Palin has done nothing to try and take away any women's rights, nor has McCain.
This audacity that it's ok that Biden believes life begins at conception. Has voted against public funding for abortion. To ban late term abortion. The same as McCain, but that's ok, according to the Hypocrites at NARAL, NOW because he has D behind his name isn't going to cut it anymore.
I am going to vote for the party that not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. That knows women are just as capable as men. That not only claims to support equal pay. They do it. Look what Obama pays women compared to what McCain does. That knows full well what a woman goes through everyday, in her stuggles to work and raise a family. That doesn't come with a silver spoon in her mouth. Who's children had a public education. Who knows what it's like to try and get ahead. I'm here to lift up a fellow woman. You go Sarah and you shatter that glass ceiling!! You make it possible for my daughter, and my grand-daughters to have that dream a reality! You make it possible for every woman to know no longer are their dreams, just dreams. They are able to achieve!

"Obama knows the middle class better.
Obama has better judgement (sic).
Obama communicates with people better.
Obama has better ideas.

Obviously Obama is a superior human being in every way, then. But other than winning elections, what has he done with all these amazing talents? He's spent all his time hiding his light under a bushel, it seems.

The real story about crowd size is how low the McCain campaign stooped in lying about crowd size in a silly attempt to make themselves look more appealing than they are. Petty lies have characterized their campaign. After the consequences we have suffered from lies by the current administration, it's really sad that everyone is not demeanding the truth, even about little things.
Obama is smarter.
Obama is more honest.
Obama is promoting better policies.
Obama knows the middle class better.
Obama has better judgement.
Obama communicates with people better.
Obama has better ideas.
Obama has a better tax plan.
Simply put, Obama is just a better candidate. That's why we're ahead and that's why we are going to win. It's hard to undersstand why it is even close. Nevertheless, Obama will win and we will be looking at a brighter future. Thank God!

I disagree with every statement you said about Obama, granted his is smart, but he doesn't have better ideas, he doesn't understand or give a damn about the middle class. his disdain towards the middle class is obvious. And I don't want wealth redistribution. I work hard for a living, everyone else can too. Obama wants to expand government which is not needed. He is a bad idea for the US, and I personally will campaign against him.
Posted by: Cathy6224 | Sep 23, 2008 1:31:26 PM
LeeRWard: The only future Obama has is staying in his senate seat until he retires. McCain will win the presidency without a doubt much to your hope he doesn't. Palin drew 60,000 in Florida, McCain drew 11,000 in Wisc. whereas Obama drew 6,000 in the same arena. Get use to it his celebrity status is over and done. Palin beat him out.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Sep 23, 2008 10:41:15 AM
Obama's crowds are getting smaller and McCain/Palin's crowds are increasing. That's what is happening. Obama is a celebrity no more. His celebrity status is over. Of course in Chicago its a different story however McCain and Palin haven't campaigned in Chicago. I can bet it would be overcrowded it they did. I believe McCain is going to win this election and the blacks will cry that people are racist. The same old story.

"Obama spoke on a Monday afternoon, when everyone's at school or work.
McCain/Palin spoke on a Thursday evening."
Gee, this doesn't speak very well for the folks who schedule Obama's campaign speeches, does it? Remember Jerry Seinfeld's incompetent agent on his TV show who kept screwing up his bookings? I think I know who she's working for now.

Okay, what is this ABC? Even Obama's home state paper (Chicago Sun-Times) acknowledged that McCain-Palin had 4,000 more people than Obama in Green Bay.
Posted by: Sabrina | Sep 23, 2008 9:23:47 AM
If Obama doesnt win the consequences will be dire republicans have gone crazy as their free market deregulation philosophy has lead to an economic collapse McCain will raise taxes on the lower and middle class trying to protect the rich class[for them they have taken an about turn and our on their way on socializing losses of private sector]McCain is a neoconservative he would stretch the military to go to war in other places, obama is our only chance or else the Bush years will be extended for the next four.

Let us review the "path of a losing DNC politician".
1. First, they dismissed their opponents.
2. Then came the reflexive snarky remarks.
3. Then came the attacks on their origins.
4. Then the snipes on their families (bloggers and sharks).
5. Then came the lawyers crawling through the woodwork.
6. Then came the snarky comments from the "rollodex experts".
7. Then came media rebellion claiming that the GOP tickets wasn't properly vetted because THEY didn't do the vetting. Nor did the the GOP ticket visit their pet shows or come to their cocktail parties.
8. Then the INTERNAL polls and GOP crowds gave them a shock.
9. Then came the attack ads. And the worse their internal polls looked, the worse their attacks became.
10. They they start to "lowball" their chances at the debates
11. Then they ignore the GOP at their rallies and don't report their numbers
12. Then they complain that the MSM aren't giving them a "fair shake" (NOTE: it's at this time when the DNC has "jumped the shark").
13. They they lose and act surprised.
14. At the post mortum, they blame their loss to racism.

Your theory explaining why barry didn't sell out his rally because it was "held in the afternoon" whereas the mccain-palin rally was held on a thursday night doesn't pass the b.s. test because i think everyone more or less knows that obama-biden can pretty much fill a place up with people who are taxpayer leaches. I am happy to see other Democrats are finally taking a second look at him and seeing him for what he really is. I bet Howard Dean is having a serious case of buyers remorse at this time. Hopefully Hillary can rescue the party in 12 because it doesn't look to promising now.
I can't believe I am going to be voting for McCain considering I have never voted Republican before, but like John says "Country First".

Platforms and promises mean very little as most of the time they do not get accomplished
None of them have our real interest at heart. Look at the money spent to become president. That money is for the jobs and book deals that they all will get when leaving Washington.

It's her natural style.
If Americans take a stupid pill and elect the Obama's, we will have our first "get even" administration. That could be even worse than the proposed (so far), trillion dollar tax bill for pre-K, Universal Health, conversion of 21-year olds into Community Organizers, "free" housing, "free" education, etc., etc., etc.

The "media" corporations are mostly in the bag for The CHANGEling, whose seizure of the Democratic nomination they contrived by declaring his candidacy a "phenomenon" after Obama supporters intimidated the Iowa caucuses with that brown-shirt "in your face" stuff.
Maybe the media can deliver the presidency to The One, but let's hope NOT.

I was waiting for this kind of report to come out. "Journalists" and mainstream media were champing at the bit to have some story -- any story -- that could point to a non-packed house for Obama. Why else would the size of his crowds continue to show up on front pages? Congrats, Tapper, you got the get. Is this the media's way of controlling the election again? Is this how they keep up the "horserace" meme? Since last week was devoted to showing McCain in a negative light, this week must be Obama's turn, no? Why don't mainstream media try and stick to the issues and all candidates' positions on them, so the public (for once) can make a close-to-informed decision this time.
Posted by: ndo | Sep 22, 2008 4:51:54 PM
Is anyone still believing those CNN and CBS polls? There is a not insignificant silent vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Screaming that people are racist if they don't support you doesn't change their minds at the ballot box it just makes them tell pollsters they are undecided.
Most of the undecideds that are just being assigned by polling companies are really McCain votes.
Obama would have to be ahead by 5% LIKELY voters to win, and he's not even close.
Posted by: s.b. | Sep 22, 2008 4:49:33 PM
Karl,
Obama has gotten more money from Frannie than any other candidate in the shortest amount of time.
Obama's good friend and original advisor to his VP search committee was the former head of Fannie Mae.
Obama supported the bailout for these companies, McCain opposed it then reluctantly and cautiously began to consider them with deep reservations.
Obama sold out the average American to help bail out wealthy financial firms.
Obama is a fraud.

your republican talking points are oustandingly delivered today...
but if you think you can lay the economic downfall on the democrats i have a bridge, and administration and two candidates to sell you, ones a pow, and the others.... cute
phil gramm, the guy that mcworse wants to have as tresure secruitary is responsible for the deregulation, he works for USB, and USB right now is trying to get in on that sweet bail out deal,
mccain is also a deregulator and up until phil gramm called the nation whiners and said we were in a mental recession, mccain had phil gramm as his top economic advisor
phil gramm may have been said to have bene kicked off the mccain campaign, but he has sure seems to be advising still
this crisis rides solely on the republicans shoulders.
how they try to pass it off as the democrats fault is just pathetic, im sure they would like us to believe the war in iraq was lied to the american public by not hte administration but the democrats
so take your talking points and shove them spock, because the big red arrow rests above the republicans heads

the decemberists are not bigger than the rolling stones or any of the massive crowd drawing bands that would be hard pressed to get 75k people to attend one of their concerts
also to shoot some more holes in your moronic claims, the decemberists werent called the decemberists or anything else for the event, there was no mention of a musical opening act

Why are most of You so mean spirited? It's really quite inspiring to see (supposed) adults calling anyone - let alone a candidate for vice president - a "pig" and constantly changing McCain to "mcsame." Oh, I guess that's the intellectual vote Obama has the lock on.
If you think posting things like that - instead of facts and REAL reasons we should vote for Obama (not "you're a racist if you don't," etc.) - helps your candidate, you are sadly mistaken.

Jake, you might want to point out that the Packers played at home last night.
As a die hard Packer fan, I can tell you after tailgating for 7 hours, then a 3+ hour game, the next day can be somewhat long.
Heck, it's not uncommon to get to sleep at 1-2am after these night games.

I'm not usually a viewer of ABC news. . .and I've only started reading this site. . . .However, it's been very obvious who Tapper is 'FOR' ??? Are you an opinion journalist ?? If so, that's fine. . . but why not make that clear.
As for sizes of Crowds. . .it's really pathetic to try and say that McCain/Palin even come close to what Obama does ON HIS OWN !!!! Apparently without Palin (or a crowd that's gathered for another reason; Nascar, etc)
McCain's crowd sizes are dismal. . .and isn't that the reason she was selected?
NOT for policy EXPERIENCE or whatever. . .just to get the Conservative Base. . . .this country in her hands would be a disaster !!!! And what does it say that McCain had to do that. . . .he's still trying to hang on to a 'base' that WAS NOT FOR him. .Pathetic !!!! Crowd size. . .as a determining factor for the Presidency ??? . . . I dont' think so !!

Obama's star is fading.
I love McCain and Palin!
I hope the DNC selects a real candidate next time. Or better yet let the people decide.
I could have had a Clinton 08

The Friday rally was bigger because everyone wanted to see Palin put lipstick on that pig. As soon as they figured out she was putting it on her own lips, they left. By midrally, the McCain people were either asleep or in their cars on the way home.
Gina, your just jealous that McCain is so boring and Palin is nothing more than Bush in a skirt.
Go Obama....

Obama leading McCain by three points, 46 to 44 percent with 8 percent undecided.
I wouldn't go by some pictures for this story. If you did you would think McCain is leading by a wide margin? Which begs the question whats the point of the story?

I've heard differing accounts of the number of people at this event. However, it's important to note the Green Bay is one of the reddest areas in a blue state. I'm from MKE but I went to school in GB. It's fairly conservative. Great town though!

I'm sure that McCain/Palin supporters are traveling out of state to go to these events which makes the crowd larger than if it were only local resident.

The gazette says 6-7k people were there and the place seats 10k. Green Bay is a conservative city though and much different than Madison, Milwaukee, and La Crosse.

Where are the comparison pictures? What are the attendance numbers? Your bias is showing.

Who cares about a picture when the most important story is that Obama leads McCain in Wisc. Or this this story suggesting that has changed? Can you check for us Jake now you have us worried?
Posted by: Kim | Sep 22, 2008 3:27:09 PM
I don't even watch the television if Obama's on it. I just turn it off. No surprise to me that even his supporters are tuning him out now.

"Jake, you forgot to mention that Green Bay is a Republican stronghold"
What about all the Republicans for Obama? Wasn't he selling that a few months back?

Geez even the water carriers at National Review are calling the crowd in WI for both rallies about even. They even give Obama a slight edge due to the time the events were held.
And that's NATIONAL REVIEW!
