Southern Republican Congressman Calls the Obamas 'Uppity'
September 04, 2008 7:31 PM
The Hill reports that Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., today -- asked to compare Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with Michelle Obama -- said "Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity."
Asked to clarify that he had, indeed, just used the word “uppity,” the Georgia Republican responded in the affirmative.
“Uppity, yeah," Westmoreland said.
"Uppity" is perceived by many African-Americans as a word used by white racists to describe blacks who have grown too big for their britches and don't know their place.
In April, Rep. Geoff Davis, Republican of Kentucky, said of Obama: “I’m going to tell you something: That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button."

America no longer needs the "Southern" states. Cut 'em off. Let 'em starve. Watch 'em crawl.

When I heard this my chest just tightened. I am from the north & everyone up here knows what uppity means when that one word is uttered about someone of African descent!! How dare he refer to Sen. Obama & Michele Obama this way! That one word speaks volumes & this so called congressman is a disgusting, insecure pathetic bigot. It seems to have been said so flippantly that it is clearly evident what this poor excuse of a human being thinks on a daily basis about a large sector of his constinuency. GA should do soemthing abouth this jackass ASAP! I guess RNC stands for the Racist National Committee. This, on the heels of the ELITIST mocking community organizers. BTW , another way that they try to sneak in their racist crap! (and I'm as white as they come!)

In our neck of the woods, "uppity" means "arrogant."
And Obama is very arrogant!

Oprah told African Americans - Obama was THE ONE.
Does THE ONE really mean the anti-Christ?

Westmoreland still thinks he's a slave owner and the boys need to bow their heads when he pass by and say yeah sa boss!

Palin speaks quite about God, yet she believes in evolution...forked tongue maybe

So glad we've got Stephen Camp running against this jerk this year! I think GA is ready to pink slip many of our Republican incumbents.

I expect McCain to denounce this racism immediately.
That is of he had any honor.

In this day and age, this is getting reported?
"'Uppity' is perceived by many African-Americans as a word used by white racists to describe blacks who have grown too big for their britches and don't know their place."
Its not just "percieved" and not just "by many African-Americans" either. Tell the truth - it IS a racist term for black people who refuse to be treated as second-class citizens because of the color of their skin.
You dont have to call this republican congressman a racist (we have no idea if thats true or not), but you ought to tell the truth and report that he spouted a bunch of racist nonsense.

I am a 60+ white woman who has spent a lot of time in the south and southwest of this great country. When the word "uppity" is used by whites, it has only ONE meaning: a black person who does not know his (or her) place. It is always racist, it is always demeaning, and it is always unacceptable.
Congressman Lynn Westmoreland is a disgrace to his country and to his state. SHAME.

Did you all see that introduction?
I was in the Netherlands when they buried their Queen. It was shown on tv their of course with lots of drama and blablabla.
This was WAY over the top. Preposterous.

As David Gergen and many others have noted, "uppity" is a code word for a black person who doesn't "know his place." Just be honest, for God's sake! Racism is alive and well in this country!

Last comment before I tear myself away from this thread:
I'm almost sorry that all of the racist comments have been removed - they show us how far most of the country has actually progressed.

If you are a Democrat who defines thoughtful articulate arguments in terms of arrogance...
I'm guessing the dems don't need you.

My comment removed except for a period?
Me thinks there be dissent within the ranks...

Ahhh, the class of the modern Republican party. I suppose this dirtbag won't mind me calling him a racist cracker either?
Posted by: Bob Lees | Sep 4, 2008 9:19:28 PM
Are the republicans so confident now that they can be open racists and no longer have to speak in code?
Posted by: Steve Myers | Sep 4, 2008 9:16:53 PM
Yeah,
I really thought they were past this.
Live and learn.

Someone should ask Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia, for a concrete example of Obama's Uppity'ness. It's unlikely she can. If McCain has any dignity and self respect left, he will repudiate this obvious use of Racist Code-Words. This behavior has been going on in the South for too long.

to be fair, that included the jewelry.
