Southern Republican Congressman Calls the Obamas 'Uppity'

September 04, 2008 7:31 PM

The Hill reports that Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., today -- asked to compare Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with Michelle Obama -- said "Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity."

Asked to clarify that he had, indeed, just used the word “uppity,” the Georgia Republican responded in the affirmative.

“Uppity, yeah," Westmoreland said.

"Uppity" is perceived by many African-Americans as a word used by white racists to describe blacks who have grown too big for their britches and don't know their place.

In April, Rep. Geoff Davis, Republican of Kentucky, said of Obama: “I’m going to tell you something: That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button."

When I heard this my chest just tightened. I am from the north & everyone up here knows what uppity means when that one word is uttered about someone of African descent!! How dare he refer to Sen. Obama & Michele Obama this way! That one word speaks volumes & this so called congressman is a disgusting, insecure pathetic bigot. It seems to have been said so flippantly that it is clearly evident what this poor excuse of a human being thinks on a daily basis about a large sector of his constinuency. GA should do soemthing abouth this jackass ASAP! I guess RNC stands for the Racist National Committee. This, on the heels of the ELITIST mocking community organizers. BTW , another way that they try to sneak in their racist crap! (and I'm as white as they come!)

In our neck of the woods, "uppity" means "arrogant."
And Obama is very arrogant!

Posted by: joseyj | Sep 6, 2008 10:59:47 PM

Oprah told African Americans - Obama was THE ONE.
Does THE ONE really mean the anti-Christ?

Posted by: joseyj | Sep 6, 2008 10:58:27 PM

Westmoreland still thinks he's a slave owner and the boys need to bow their heads when he pass by and say yeah sa boss!

Posted by: ted | Sep 5, 2008 9:19:58 PM

Palin speaks quite about God, yet she believes in evolution...forked tongue maybe

Posted by: terrie | Sep 5, 2008 1:57:03 AM

So glad we've got Stephen Camp running against this jerk this year! I think GA is ready to pink slip many of our Republican incumbents.

Posted by: Amy T | Sep 5, 2008 12:00:14 AM

I expect McCain to denounce this racism immediately.

That is of he had any honor.

Posted by: Ryan C | Sep 4, 2008 10:58:55 PM

In this day and age, this is getting reported?

"'Uppity' is perceived by many African-Americans as a word used by white racists to describe blacks who have grown too big for their britches and don't know their place."

Its not just "percieved" and not just "by many African-Americans" either. Tell the truth - it IS a racist term for black people who refuse to be treated as second-class citizens because of the color of their skin.

You dont have to call this republican congressman a racist (we have no idea if thats true or not), but you ought to tell the truth and report that he spouted a bunch of racist nonsense.

Posted by: Mike | Sep 4, 2008 10:42:25 PM

I am a 60+ white woman who has spent a lot of time in the south and southwest of this great country. When the word "uppity" is used by whites, it has only ONE meaning: a black person who does not know his (or her) place. It is always racist, it is always demeaning, and it is always unacceptable.

Congressman Lynn Westmoreland is a disgrace to his country and to his state. SHAME.

Posted by: victory | Sep 4, 2008 10:37:24 PM

Did you all see that introduction?

I was in the Netherlands when they buried their Queen. It was shown on tv their of course with lots of drama and blablabla.

This was WAY over the top. Preposterous.

Posted by: Willem van Oranje | Sep 4, 2008 10:16:00 PM

As David Gergen and many others have noted, "uppity" is a code word for a black person who doesn't "know his place." Just be honest, for God's sake! Racism is alive and well in this country!

Last comment before I tear myself away from this thread:

I'm almost sorry that all of the racist comments have been removed - they show us how far most of the country has actually progressed.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 4, 2008 9:33:19 PM

If you are a Democrat who defines thoughtful articulate arguments in terms of arrogance...

I'm guessing the dems don't need you.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 4, 2008 9:23:09 PM

My comment removed except for a period?

Me thinks there be dissent within the ranks...

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 4, 2008 9:21:41 PM

Ahhh, the class of the modern Republican party. I suppose this dirtbag won't mind me calling him a racist cracker either?

Posted by: Bob Lees | Sep 4, 2008 9:19:28 PM

Are the republicans so confident now that they can be open racists and no longer have to speak in code?

Posted by: Steve Myers | Sep 4, 2008 9:16:53 PM

Yeah,

I really thought they were past this.

Live and learn.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 4, 2008 9:15:22 PM

Someone should ask Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia, for a concrete example of Obama's Uppity'ness. It's unlikely she can. If McCain has any dignity and self respect left, he will repudiate this obvious use of Racist Code-Words. This behavior has been going on in the South for too long.

Posted by: James | Sep 4, 2008 9:13:52 PM

to be fair, that included the jewelry.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 4, 2008 9:12:21 PM

OYW,

It was announced on that "tool of the left'
CNN. And so far, no retraction.

Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 4, 2008 9:11:18 PM

The difference between the two is that Michelle would never sit and giggle while another woman was called a b--- on-air, even if that woman was a political opponent. Sarah did that. She even told the two radio hosts who mocked her opponent, that she'd be honoured if they'd come visit her.

VP material? I don't think so.

I happen to be white, grew up in Detroit and went to a public, technical high school
where half of the 5000 students were black.

Best experience of my life.

Westmoreland you are a pig in the animal farm and a global disaster. This is 21st century. Remember racism has no place in modern America. You belong to the past.Shame on you. No wonder you are of limited intelligence. I am very proud to be a black highly educated professional like the Obamas and Bidens. GO OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12

Posted by: mike | Sep 4, 2008 9:00:14 PM

No, but you will be forced to listen to
classical music and write a book report on something other than comics if you misbehave.

Beer vs. Book

Need I say more?

American hero vs zero!

any questions?

Posted by: joe | Sep 4, 2008 8:52:58 PM

Awesome. If there's one thing that can distract media attention from Mrs. Mooseburger, it's a racist southern Congressman showing you the depths of his racism.

Westmoreland: "My self-destruction. Let me show you it."

Posted by: bughunter | Sep 4, 2008 8:50:59 PM

Nothing Personal, but you can truly never be uppity and black even if you fake it. On the inside you never forget who you really are and we always have comments like these to help us remember.

Posted by: Charice | Sep 4, 2008 8:46:26 PM

The Republicans sure are showing their true colors (or should I say color) at this convention. It's pretty embarrassing.

Posted by: jennie | Sep 4, 2008 8:45:44 PM

I just have to say congratulations to Palin for raising millions of dollars after her speech last night - for OBAMA BABY!

Posted by: jozy | Sep 4, 2008 8:45:06 PM

Westmoreland, from the south, certainly did know the history and negative connotation of such a term unlike his defenders on this site who are ignorant of American history, or at least history they choose not to educate themselves about.

It's nice to see American politics once again moving in this direction.

The anarchists must be pleased.

"I have never heard of "uppity" being a racist term ... but then when it comes to the Obamas everything has a racial tone to it, it seems."

Francisco you never heard that term because English is your second language.

ENOUGH OF REPUBLICAN CORRUPTION.

I'm white, I'm southern, and I grew up hearing the term "uppity" used in a disparaging, demeaning manner toward black people. It made me angry then, it makes me angry now. It is a vile, purely racist term, as is the term "boy" when used in speaking of a black man. I'm old enough to remember the lynchings of "uppity" black people who were not subservient enough for their "betters".

It strikes me that if the Obamas were white, they would be universally referred to as American success stories, which they are. I pity those of you who are so insecure, angry, and threatened by the success of someone whose skin color, heritage, gender, sexual orientation or religion is different from yours. That's not American.

"The second dumbest creature is one that does not recognize its enemies. The dumbest creature is one that helps its enemies." Any white that votes for Obama falls in the latter category.

PT: First they have to have BRAINS.

Posted by: linda n carolina | Sep 4, 2008 8:20:38 PM

A guy who dismissed a woman governor and calls female professionals "sweetie", who calls mocks small town America for their faith and owning guns is an elitist. Uppity is used when describing cheerleaders and popular girls in the south. You northernors can make this a racial incident, but uppity is used for both races, mostly directed at the popular kids and rich parents.

Posted by: Cornell | Sep 4, 2008 8:18:17 PM

Cindy mccain pays $315,000 for a dress, Michelle Obama buys hers at Target, and they call the Obama's uppity. Mr. palin wants Alaska to become separate from the other 49 states and they say Michelle is not proud of her country. THINK people THINK... Put your brains in gear before you open your mouth.

Posted by: pt | Sep 4, 2008 8:18:16 PM

AWWW..uppity, code word for the "n" word.

What's new...Obama doesn't care. He and other successful, inspirational people of color have heard that too many times.

He has thick skin by now. He just dust that ignorance off his shoulder and continue to move on....

Next....

Bash America? Well, yeah, you have a point there.

No thanks.

Obama will lose and he will lose big. When people get in the privacy of that voting booth they will reject this man by the millions.

Watch.

Jennifer, yes Obama can be reached as he congratulates Mr. McCain at the inaugural.

Whoooo hooo!

Obama:"partisan attack, partisan attack, partisan attack, We must come together, partisan attack"
Media:"Obama's the Great Uniter!"

Obama is not threatened by these sad people. He is the next president of the united states and leader of the free world. Rep. West will just have deal with it. I feel sorry for you Rep. West.

You know, I never knew there was apparently this dictionary that is available with a list of words that can never be used when discussing minorities.

Maybe women should put out a similar dictionary.

If we did, Harry Reid's comment that Palin was shrill would make the sexist dictionary.

Posted by: Peach | Sep 4, 2008 7:40:47 PM

Tell Rep Westmoreland he can reach Mr. "uppity" at Pennsylvania Avenue in January.
