The Pork Wars, Part 3

September 09, 2008 10:00 AM

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin co-byline an oped in the Wall Street Journal  on the Fannie/Freddie bailout.  But perhaps of more interest is the Journal's take on Palin's position on pork and the Bridge to Nowhere: "Record Contradicts Palin's 'Bridge' Claims," is the title of the story.

Palin "endorsed the multimillion dollar project during her gubernatorial race in 2006. And while she did take part in stopping the project after it became a national scandal, she did not return the federal money. She just allocated it elsewhere….

"Why is this one issue such a big deal? Sen. McCain's anti-earmarks stance has been paramount to his campaign. The Arizona senator has blamed everything from the Minneapolis bridge collapse to Hurricane Katrina on Congress's willingness to stuff bills full of pork barrel spending. As such, Gov. Palin's image as a 'reformer' is part of the storyline the McCain campaign needs to complement the top of its ticket. Her quip about passing on the bridge and 'building it ourselves' has been a staple of her stump."

Obama, the Journal says, requested $311 million in earmarks last year. "In comparison, Gov. Palin has requested $750 million in her two years as governor -- which the AP says is the largest per-capita request in the nation."

When will Evangelical Christians realise that the right-wing has high-jacked their vote by offering a few token policies that don't impact their finances (pro-life, anti same-sex marriage), while focusing the rest of their attention on war-mongering, greedy policies that are completly unbiblical??? Surely voting Republican is not in line with Christ's call of "loving one's neighbour".

Seems to me that the way to stop McCain\Palin demagoguery on earmarks is
to agree with them.....Then go about
listing every single earmark (including those in Alaska) and simply ask whether they were benefial or not to the people received them. And, if they believed they beneficial, how would they otherwise have been funded. The reason earmarks are used so rampantly is that politicians no the projects in the earmark, no matter how beneficial to their constituents, would never pass on its own. Does it reduce spending to cut all earmarks? Yes. Does it benefit the common good? Maybe not.

It's becoming quite remarkable how the McCain Palin campaign have been throwing out a lot of stuff to prove just how mavericky she really is and then screaming "foul," "mean media," or "sexism," whenever anyone tries to actually examine the record.

If you put a statement out there, you own it and have to defend it.

Obama's record? Since Jan 2005 he has personally sponsored 136 bills, 122 which haven't even made it out of committee (see GovTrack.org) We already know the number of times he voted present so he wouldn't have to commit to a vote. There's not any tactic he won't engage in including lies and innuendo and there are numerous articles - Obama hid a $832,000 made to ACORN (See Wash Post Article dated 8/22/2008.) - now Obama is making an amendment to FEC over this 'slip'. He and Biden represent change? He's voted with his party 98% of the time - is that change:? Is that reaching across to get things done in a bipartisan manner? He says change but he uses the old tax and tax policy which will only further depress teh economy. Sarah Palin did take on the establlished network as did John McCain. Obama says he takes a stance against lobbying? See see Wash POst article dated 8/27/08 -'Obama gave Biden's son's client's 3.4 million .' JOe Biden's son is a lobbyist and Obama has sought 3.4 million for client's of that son. Read the article yourself. Obama says he's against lobbyists - apparently not! Biden has collected 6.9 million from lobbyists since 1989. Don't take my word for it - read the article WaPo (Washington Post August 27, 2008.) Apparently Obama's not as against lobbyists as he likes to say... Obama's sent 30 lawyers to Anchorage to get dirt on Palin - 30 lawyers - Obama will do anything and I think that's scary. I know you will rationalize away anything for Obama but does this not bother you? So your guy Obama is the biggest liar of them all. Obama is Change? The only change he preresents is a like a quick change artist.

IN the 3 years 9 months Obama has been a US Senator, he sponsored 427 bills and authored 152 of them. Prior to that, he was in the Illinois State Legislature where he sponsored 820 bills to become law.

Senator Obama’s record: Of the 15 bills he sponsored or co-sponsored in 2005-7 that became law,

*2 addressed foreign policy (promote relief, security, and democracy in the Congo; and develop democratic institutions in areas under Palestinian control)
*3 addressed public health (improve mine safety; increased breast cancer research funding; reduce preterm delivery and complications, reduce infant mortality)
*2 addressed openness and accountability in government (strengthening the Freedom Of Information Act; full disclosure of all entities receiving federal funds)
*2 addressed national security (extend terrorist risk insurance; amend the Patriot Act)
*1 addressed the needs of the Armed Forces (wave passport fees to visit graves, attend memorials/funerals of veterans abroad)
And of the hundreds of bills Senator Obama introduced during the 109th and 110th Congress:

*25 addressed energy efficiency and climate change
*21 addressed health care
*20 addressed public health
*14 addressed consumer protection/labor
*13 addressed the needs of veterans and of active duty personnel and their families
*12 addressed congressional ethics and accountability
*10 addressed foreign policy
*9 addressed voting/election rights
*7 addressed education
*6 addressed relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina
*5 addressed the environment
*4 addressed discrimination
*4 addressed homeland security

OBAMA = $1 BILLION IN EARMARKS SINCE HE HAS BEEN IN THE SENATE.........OBAMA IS THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE.

Posted by: Foodforthought | Sep 9, 2008 1:38:59 PM

Obama IS the bridge to nowhere.....

Posted by: Foodforthought | Sep 9, 2008 1:37:36 PM

Upshot of yesterday's comments and this Op-Ed: McCain/Palin want to raise interest rates. That's their ownership society: you're on your own.

Sarah Palin's Wasilla record:

* Tax collection soared 38%
* Government expenditures increased 33%
* Spent more than $300 million in pork barrel
* Left town in $26 million in debt
* Fired police chief because she didn't like him
* Remodeled office twice in six years
* Bullied local librarian

How is McCain going to rid Washington of special interests when his campaign is run by lobbyists? During his Georgia sabre-rattling, his chief mouthpiece on the matter had been paid $800,000 for lobbying on behalf of the Goverment of Georgia! Other members have his staff have lobbied for some of the world's most brutal dictators and thugs.

Palin is now an anti-earmark crusader! When did this transformation occur? As Mayor of a town of 6 or 7,000 people she paid a lobbyist associated with Good Government Hero Jack Abramhoff $2.7 million to drag in $27 million worth of pork.

This is complete and utter b.s. Hats off to the WSJ for calling them out on this.

Concerned in OH,
Republicans don't give a damn about working people. Never have, never will. They mask this indifference by scaring people of their opponent. Be honest. What protections for working people have Republicans ever championed. Republicans have always championed businesses....the same businesses who are shipping jobs overseas and hiring illegal aliens at dirt cheap wages. Meanwhile, working Americans suffer.

SpaceCat,
What is sexism is McCain's dog and pony show he is doing with Palin right now. Scrutinatization of public official's record is an obligation the media has to the public.

Wasn't part of the money Obama got in pork given to his church?

Posted by: Melissa | Sep 9, 2008 12:15:27 PM

McCain/Palin 2008,
That is the problem with you Republicans. You treat elections like football games and chess matches instead of discussing issues. I thought you guys were about reform? Seems to me it is the same old crap. Repubulicans message has always been to do nothing and that is exactly how they govern.

Posted by: indy_voter | Sep 9, 2008 12:14:50 PM

listen Jake Obama's record with pork barrels isn't hidden. I know that ya'll know that Obama subsidized his wife's employer and local radical local churches. There were several conflicts of inhterest that are being ignored ...

State so called pork barrel money obtained by governors is not the same as the Senate money hidden in budgets and legislation that has been paying off Obama and his cohorts and swaying the business of the people.

When are you guys going to take a look at the very failed record of Obama's cronyism? Why is Palin fair game and Obama off limits?"

And the Biden boys. Tell THAT story, too!

Posted by: Belle Starr | Sep 9, 2008 12:04:08 PM

The media should vet Obama! He has been cuddled by the media as their God-child who must be protected from scrutiny! Now, the media wants blood from Palin! Draw some from Obama, get to his Harvard funding, his earmarks/pork barrell - hidden in legislation tag ons! ($1million a day of taxpayer money for Obama)! Cha-Cha-Ching.. Change that you can believe in!

At least Palin Pipeline benefits the whole country and may be exactly what this country needs to wean itself off foreign suppliers. Way to go Palin! That is real change we can look forward to!

Gee a Gov requested more than a Senator in state subsidies....listen Jake Obama's record with pork barrels isn't hidden. I know that ya'll know that Obama subsidized his wife's employer and local radical local churches. There were several conflicts of inhterest that are being ignored.

What about the on-going Rezko investigation? If Obama didn't "pay to play" he certainly was one of the few who benefited for this little piece of Chicago corruption.

TELL THE STORY!

Republicans=liars=Abuse of Power

Ask Senator McCain about how he tried to physically assault and then tried to financially ruin councilwoman Kathy Dubs because she dared point out that a land deal he tried to cut for the state was for his personal profit.

Posted by: Danny | Sep 9, 2008 11:29:05 AM

I like how an Earmark for a Natural Gas Pipeline in Alaska is being compared to the $311,000,000 in Earmarks Obama sought for pork projects in Chicago. The pipeline benefits all of the US, so the Per Capita comparison is a tainted statistic.
