The Story Behind Biden's Emergency Helicopter Landing in Afghanistan

September 22, 2008 6:19 PM

"Ladies and gentlemen, where are we now? Where are we now?" Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said to the National Guard Association today, talking about the war in Afghanistan.

"If you want to know where Al Qaeda lives, you want to know where Bin Laden is, come back to Afghanistan with me," Biden said. "Come back to the area where my helicopter was forced down, with a three-star general and three senators at 10,500 feet in the middle of those mountains. I can tell you where they are."

Biden said that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "says he’ll follow them to the gates of hell. You don’t have to go to hell. Just go to Pakistan. Just go to that area. That superhighway of terror that exists between Afghanistan and Pakistan."

We hadn't heard before about Biden's helicopter being forced down, so we did some Googling.

After all, earlier this month at a fundraiser, he made a similar remark, when discussing how he doesn't care about the Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's controversies like whether she sold a state plane on eBay, or when she went from supporting to opposing the Bridge to Nowhere.

"What I care about is: What in God's name is she going to do -- along with John McCain -- about the thousands of people who don't have health care?" Biden said according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Biden said he would ask Palin about "The superhighway of terror between Pakistan and Afghanistan where my helicopter was forced down...John McCain wants to know where Bin Laden and the gates of Hell are? I can tell him where. That's where Al Qaeda is. That's where Bin Laden is. It's not in the country of Iraq."

In February 2008, Biden -- along with Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. -- was on a chopper that made an emergency landing in the mountains of Afghanistan.

A snowstorm had forced them down.

No one was injured, and the Associated Press reported at the time that "the senators and their delegation returned to Bagram Air Base in a motor convoy, and left for Turkey.

"The weather closed in on us," Kerry told the AP at the time in a phone interview from Turkey. "It went pretty blind, pretty fast and we were around some pretty dangerous ridges. So the pilot exercised his judgment that we were better off putting down there, and we all agreed...We sat up there and traded stories."

Kerry joked, "We were going to send Biden out to fight the Taliban with snowballs, but we didn't have to do it…Other than getting a little cold, it was fine."

I wouldn't believe Joe Biden under oath!

Where does Biden say his chopper was shot down? I think the point this VP is making is that he's been to the central front on the war on terror: the Pakistan-Afghanistan border (as opposed to McCain's references to the non-existent Iraqi-Afghani border). If this is the best Republicans can come up with to discredit Joe, then they might as well concede now. Compared to Palin's whoppers, this is laughable: 1) First thanks, then no thanks to the bridge to nowhere--but thanks for the cash!; 2) Claiming the natural gas pipeline as an accomplishment without mentioning that the pipeline may never be built due to ongoing land disputes that her administration failed to resolve; 3) Her claim that heading the AK National Guard gave her commander in chief credentials, when in fact she has delegated all decision making to Maj. General Craig Campbell; 4) claiming foreign policy experience by virtue of "protecting US airspace" from the rearing head of Putin:

To me, this is analogous to Palin's E-Bay statement, which I thought was no big deal...she put the plane on E-bay (true, but it didn't sell), Biden's helicopter was forced down (but by a snowstorm). Let's stick to the issues of experience and ideas for getting the nation out of the mess we're in.

Biden was not joking when he told his story.

Biden was trying to emphasize that our real enemies are in Afghanistan and not in Iraq.
Hmm! Joe knows were the bad guys are cause his helicopter was forced down by problems with visibility in a snowstorm.

It looks like Biden and Obama can say anything they want true or not. The believers merely swallow everything.

Biden didn't lie about being in a helicopter that was forced down in Afghanistan.

Biden just implied that hostile fire forced the bird down. He never mentioned that a snow storm was the reason. He just wanted to make people believe he saw the enemy and they were the cause of the "forced" landing....Biden said in context that The bad guys are in Afghanistan. He knows first hand because of his helo going down.

Senator Biden tried to embellish what happened during his VP helo flight.

He was on helo to avoid problems on the ground. The aircraft was forced to land due to weather.

No hostile fire was involved. Biden told the story so it sounded like he was shot at and forced down by enemy fire.

Biden is a story teller who lives in a fantasy world. He still can see FDR on TV telling America about the crash of 1929.

Hmm!
How many other delusions does he have?

" From 2000 -2006 we had a republican president, a republican congress, a repubican senate."

A bill favored by the Bush Administration was introduced in 2005 that would have created a more regulation and oversight of Fannie and Freddie. The Democrats managed to kill it.

Oops?

omg, he was joking around. haters can turn anything into a lash. before you go on about biden, can you explain to us why palin lies so much? bridge to nowhere? earmarks? she's only been around for a few weeks, and already lied more than the other 3 candidates combined. heard she was ambitious....

Joe Biden is a well known and often proven liar and plagiarizer. All intelligent Americans have a right – even a duty -- to question EVERYTHING he says!

Posted by: professorj | Sep 23, 2008 10:36:31 PM

If Joe Biden knew he was flying into a dangerous storm and flew anyhow then he is not only crazy, he risked other people's lives as part of his mania. Ditto for Hagel and Kerry. As officer vets, Hagel and Kerry are supposed to have the smarts and judgement to avoid unnecessarily risking American service lives.

As to the supposed "flyer" of the helicopter - let's have his name, rank, serial number. This "flyer" in "Afghanistan" is probably a hoaxer.
Which makes me sick of the bastards who perpetrate these insults to our heroic service members.

Soo.. how does he know that Al CIAda and Bin Laden are in those mountains? What is the point of making those claims when he has no proof or explanation to go with it?

Dave,

Don't you remember Pres. Clinton wanted every American to be able to buy a house! So the mortgage industry lowered all the existing standards, ignored marginal credit scores, did not require buyers to put any money into a house-IE no down payment, and let them have the seller pay the buyers closing cost, even created down payment assistance program disguising themselves as a non-profit organization, created 100% financing and did 80/20 loans (1st loan for 80% and a 2nd for 20%) so the marginal buyer could get out of PMI insurance etc, not to mention lets do a interest only loan on ARMS because home prices always rise.....This is the problem with the mortgage and banking industry today, we had no rules-no minimum standards if you had a pulse you got a loan...thus we will all suffer, the 1st wave of mortgage companies to go under where in the secondary mortgage markets holding the 2nd lien at 20% and no insurance, now we have the primary mortgage market falling. Wake-up nothing is free in life, and if it is to one person, someone else is the one paying for it.

"Dave B,

One last thing. From 2000 -2006 we had a republican president, a republican congress, a repubican senate. Why didn't you fix Fannie Mae? Jimmie Carter's problems? or Bill Clinton's? Just take the responsiblity and stop blaming the democrats."

I was there, in the helicopter, on the controls. I can tell you all right now, it was NOT fun at any point. Was it dangerous? YES, yes it was. Why you ask? Try flying a helicopter past 14000 foot tall mountains that you CANT SEE! Then, find a place to land, in the mountains, when you CANT SEE! NOT fun. Oh, and yes, Im still in Afghanistan right now.

Sen. Biden did just fine. He really is a pretty good guy, and his comments were accurate and appropriate in my opinion.

They were not "rescued" by Blackwater civilians. They were convoyed to Bagram by the infantry of the Arizona National Guard that was doing all the fighting in the area at that time. Excellent bunch of guys. They stayed with us (the crews) until we could be extracted the next afternoon.

As a US Army Pilot, Sen. Biden has my respect, as do all the other people who were involved with the situation.

Wait a second. Everything Biden said was true. It was forced down. It was in a thick snowstorm in a dangerous [physically dangerous, even ignoring any war] place.
Would YOU have been relaxed taking a helicopter into such a setting. Gee, as Biden would say, give me a break!!!

Thanks again, Joe

WASHINGTON, DC — Another case of Joe being Joe.

The Delaware Senator took issue with an attack ad from his own side in an interview with CBS, telling Katie Couric that the Obama hit on McCain’s ignorance of computers and technology was “terrible.” The ad paints McCain as out of touch — and all but calls him ancient — but doesn’t mention that the Arizona Senator’s war injuries actually prevent him from using computers for an extended period.

Asked whether he’s disappointed with the tone of the campaign, including the ad that Couric characterized as “making fun of John mcCain’s inability to use a computer,” Biden said “I thought that was terrible by the way.

“I didn’t know we did it and if I had anything to do with it, we would have never done it”

Biden is such a blow-hard. Typical politician picked by a typical politician to be V.P. Anyone voting for this idiot and his running mate are mentally challenged.

Sara, you rube....
If Biden was quoting Kinnock; why was Neil Kinnock talking about the Biden family in Pa. He was not quoting Kinnock...he took the entire speech and made it his own. Again...if it was a quote...why was Kinnock talking about the Biden family??
