The Story Behind Biden's Emergency Helicopter Landing in Afghanistan
September 22, 2008 6:19 PM
"Ladies and gentlemen, where are we now? Where are we now?" Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said to the National Guard Association today, talking about the war in Afghanistan.
"If you want to know where Al Qaeda lives, you want to know where Bin Laden is, come back to Afghanistan with me," Biden said. "Come back to the area where my helicopter was forced down, with a three-star general and three senators at 10,500 feet in the middle of those mountains. I can tell you where they are."
Biden said that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "says he’ll follow them to the gates of hell. You don’t have to go to hell. Just go to Pakistan. Just go to that area. That superhighway of terror that exists between Afghanistan and Pakistan."
We hadn't heard before about Biden's helicopter being forced down, so we did some Googling.
After all, earlier this month at a fundraiser, he made a similar remark, when discussing how he doesn't care about the Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's controversies like whether she sold a state plane on eBay, or when she went from supporting to opposing the Bridge to Nowhere.
"What I care about is: What in God's name is she going to do -- along with John McCain -- about the thousands of people who don't have health care?" Biden said according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Biden said he would ask Palin about "The superhighway of terror between Pakistan and Afghanistan where my helicopter was forced down...John McCain wants to know where Bin Laden and the gates of Hell are? I can tell him where. That's where Al Qaeda is. That's where Bin Laden is. It's not in the country of Iraq."
In February 2008, Biden -- along with Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. -- was on a chopper that made an emergency landing in the mountains of Afghanistan.
A snowstorm had forced them down.
No one was injured, and the Associated Press reported at the time that "the senators and their delegation returned to Bagram Air Base in a motor convoy, and left for Turkey.
"The weather closed in on us," Kerry told the AP at the time in a phone interview from Turkey. "It went pretty blind, pretty fast and we were around some pretty dangerous ridges. So the pilot exercised his judgment that we were better off putting down there, and we all agreed...We sat up there and traded stories."
Kerry joked, "We were going to send Biden out to fight the Taliban with snowballs, but we didn't have to do it…Other than getting a little cold, it was fine."

The dinosaur-main-stream-media, intent on bringing Senator Clinton down, made a HUGE deal about her recount of her trip to Bosnia.
Now Joe Biden has said this twice and what do we hear?
Zip. Nada. ZERO!
I think the dinosaur-main-stream-media should be sued for misrepresenting to the American people that they are "reporting". These people are in the tank for Nobama. There should be a disclaimer before and after every word that comes out of their mouths.
What this boils down to is FREE POLITICAL ADVERTISING FOR ONE CANDIDATE WHILE IGNORING OR TRYING TO ADVERSELY AFFECT THE OTHER CANDIDATE.
THIS IS WRONG!

"He ment it to be taken as if he were forced down by hostels."
It's the "inn" thing to do.

Sara...
It certainly sounds like Biden is implying that their chopper was forced down by Al Qaeda and Bin Laden himself - he says his chopper was forced down and in the very next sentence says he can tell us where Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are. It implies that he saw the enemy and they were right there forcing his helicopter to the ground. Biden should consider a career in the theatre - melodrama is his forte.

Also, since this story was published months ago and was very well known, I doubt he thought he had to go into intricate detail to explain what happened. It was common knowledge.

I know Biden well enough to know that he never said this was sniper fire and that people are too quick to jump on something because they want to believe the worst about someone. I read this story months ago and know that this is a non-issue.
As for the Kinnock incident, the man quoted him all of the time, and on one occasion forgot to cite him. That incident was recorded by John Sasso of the Dukakis campaign and shopped around to several news outlets, many that declined to run with the story because they had followed the campaign and knew that he gave credit on other occasions. John Sasso was fired over this incident.
I happen to make myself an informed person. I would suggest that other people take the time to do that as well.

Sara ...
Biden's lies includes what he says and what he intentionaly does not say. He ment it to be taken as if he were forced down by hostels. You don't know Joe very well do you? Ask him about his alter-ego ...Neil Kinnock.

When did Biden say they were forced down for sniper fire? He didn't, so why is everyone here assuming that he did? This is ridiculous and a waste of time. This is an old story that everyone knows already. Biden at no time said that they were forced down due to any enemy forces, enemy fire or enemy fighting. They were in a hostile region.
He didn't make up some harrowing tell about sniper fire, like Clinton. He actually told the truth and everyone is trying to make it a lie.

Let's see if this gets as much play as HIllary and the sniper fire.
Oh wait -- we only massacre HRC, don't we? The Chosen One's team gets preferential treatment from most.

Biden had 5 draft deferrals during Vietnam, until he finally found a doctor who said he had the worst case of asthma EVER!!! Of course, when asked recently if he had asthma, Biden said no.
Remember what they did to Bush and Cheney and their actions during Vietnam??

There's that dang global warming again, messing up the good senator's ride to glory...

If McCains military record is irrelevant (as liberals like to claim) why is it that so many liberals LIE in order to claim courage under fire; Biden, Hillary, Kerry?
Someone needs to send a clue to the DNC; if you are going to lie, make it a lie that people will actually believe. I am sure they believe that the media is so 'in the bag' for them already, that no one will actually check the facts. For proof, can you imagine, for one second, that Sarah Palin would get a pass on something like this? I can see it already... "Oh, that's just Sarah being Sarah"... You know, the same way that the democrats shrug off Bidens constant flubs...
When a democrat lies, the DNC claims that they were tired from campaigning too much, when a republican lies, it is front page (above the fold) news...

Here is a first hand account of Biden's helicopter ride:
Hey folks,
If you watch the news or read the papers Im sure you saw the article about the helicopters full of senators etc... that landed on a mountain over here in Afghan. Yeah, it WAS us, 7 of my buddies and myself. Yeah, it sucked, and yeah, it was cold as heck. We were out there for too dang long in the snow, rain, ice, sleet and wind. But, we had CAS (close air support) flying over (F-15s and A-10s) head at nearly all times and they had a live Predator feed going the whole time too (when they could see anyway).
It was pretty hairy at first, but once we were on the ground all was ok. We had about 100 or so locals (freindly? who knows) all around on the mountain tops watching all night. No shots fired, so, we didnt either. Its all good.
Shortly after the landing, we had ground guys (Arizona National Guard) mobilized and on thier way to our location. Now, about the AZ guys... AWESOME is the only word to describe them. I have worked with many active and guard units, and these fellas were TOP NOTCH for sure. Outstanding. The guys stood outside, all night and all day, in the rain, snow, wind etc... Tough as nails, and didnt complain for a second. A huge thank you goes out to those boys for doin what they do best.
So, part of their force took the senators, generals ect... back "home" and the rest stayed with us. Then it was a waiting game for weather to clear. Now, 37 hours after we departed, we are "home".
Good times good times. I have some pics of the area, weather ect... and I'll post them when I can.

If they just would have had a community organizer they would have been able to avoid that storm.
"His rise is remarkable in its own right. It's the kind of thing that could happen only in America. But he's never run a city, never run a state, never run a business. He's never had to lead people in crisis. This is not a personal attack. It's a statement of fact: Barack Obama has never led anything." -- Rudy Giuliani

Oh my gosh! Did Chokin Joe make another gaffe? I'm just wondering why he didn't blame it on Bush's policy ....ie., not giving the Dem's enough gas for his helicopter excursion or something like that. Joe just doesn't put his foot in his mouth, he just changes feet every few minutes!!! I do not want this joker a heartbeat away from the White House. He does not inspire anyone. Talk about fodder for the press.....he would be a mountain full!

terry2f, biden lied by omission and you want to trust him to fix the economy?
Google Johson, Rains, Freddy Mac, Fanny Mae and Obama. See who actually screwed Freddy and Fanny, made millions in the screwing and now work for obama.
Or do facts scare you if they show your guy to be the crook everyone else knows he is?

Joe's comments ""What I care about is: What in God's name is she going to do -- along with John McCain -- about the thousands of people who don't have health care?" Biden said, are on track.
Joe, you tell em just what you've done as a Senator to address the health care issue. All America is waiting for the Blowhard to speak.

Biden the super slueth! So he believes that Bin Laden is where the US helicopter with three senators and 2 generals went down, waited out a snow storm without incident. With Biden on the case it won't take long to get Bin Laden now.

Senator Biden. Had this almost disaster occured ; the sycophant news papers etc. would have carried it for days on end. Gosh! I didn't read a thing about it. Perhaps we mis-spoke like Miss Hillary has done in the past about her exploits in the war and else where.
Now can we trust you as vicepresident to tell the truth later???

Yeah, Biden also lies about his first wife who died in a car accident. Even today, Biden claims a drunk truck driver killed her, when in fact, the driver wasn't drunk and wasn't cited, nor was his truck found to be unsafe. The conclusion of the authorities is that his wife pulled out in front of the truck. No doubt Biden was trying to get sympathy vote and he'll trash a dead man and his family to score political points.
