To the Ladies of 'The View,' McCain Misrepresents Palin's Earmark Record

September 12, 2008 2:38 PM

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., once again steered clear of straight talk when discussing his running mate's record on earmarks today.

BARBARA WALTERS: What is she going to reform, specifically?

JOHN MCCAIN: Well, first of all, earmark spending, which she vetoed half a billion dollars worth in the state of Alaska.

WALTERS: She also took some earmarks.

JOY BEHAR: A lot.

MCCAIN: No, not as governor, she didn't. She vetoed –- Look, well, the fact is she's a reform governor.

Palin may be a reform governor -- there's a good case to be made that she is -- but, yes, she did seek and receive earmarks. McCain's claim that "as governor she didn't" is simply not so.

Why the McCain campaign is so dead-set on not being honest about her record, instead of emphasizing the positive, is really quite bewildering.

The Anchorage Daily News reported this month that Palin in 2007 sought "52 earmarks valued at $256 million in Palin’s first year. This year, the governor’s office asked the delegation to help them land 31 earmarks valued at $197 million."

USA Today reported in March of this year that "Arizona, the second fastest growing state in the nation, will receive just $18.70 per capita in federal earmarks this fiscal year. By comparison, Alaska — with roughly a tenth of Arizona's population — is set to receive $506.34 per capita, the highest in the nation, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group which tracks earmarks. The state of Alaska receives about three times as much as Arizona receives in actual dollars, $346 million to $119 million."

Sarah Palin must have been so famous on the web. She campaigned on the idea that she was against earmarks, or government funds that are pegged for a specific cause. The only problem is that she asked for $140 million to be set aside for her state, which makes Alaska one of the biggest users of earmarks in the U.S. This is after she gave a large cash advance building an oil pipeline. And she's also having her daughters' contentious break up to deal with. Rumors are still going around about her running in 2012, but if she fails to live up to campaign promises it won't be an easy sell for Sarah Palin for President.

I can't believe what I've read. Couldn't any of you see how VERY UNFAIR the witches on the View were. They treated Obama like a "Star" who is FAR from that. If Obama was interrogated as rudely as McCain was by the WITCHES, he would have made a fool of himself and would have proven himself a BIG liar. If you're going to call McCain a Liar, pass it on to Obama...check out the facts. Obama is INEXPERIENCED and making promises that are UNREALISTIC...Come on....Democrates blame the Republicans for the "problems" of our country, get over it...how many times have the Democrates Vetoed off-shore drilling!! The economy?? President Bush DID warn Americans about the coming recession...Check it out...Seems like Obama has no problem with the economy, Hollywood helped him out with $9 million....I'm sure, he can buy a few HOMES with that.

I am sorry but if you have really listen to Obama and are really true followers then I am scared for you and your children. Look at the facts! Open your eyes and look at the facts! He was not asked about policy or any political views! He was told he was sexy! What the heck?!? I am either a republican or democrate, I listen and research each side and Obama scares me. His background, his connections.
Think about this: In order to work at/near the White House you have to have a Top Secret clearance and secret clearance. My husband has a secret clearance and would be allowed to apply and receive a top secret if we had the funds although his company could fund it. There is a extensive background check that is involved and it is not easy to come by. Obama does not have one and would not be able to get one. WHy? Because of his background and who he has been affiliated with. You think I am lying...check it out. If he is elected then our President, who will have the nuclear codes, will not have a Secret or Top secret clearance.

Look everyone, the debate over who told what lies and this candidate tells this lie and this one does not is idiotic. All candidates tell lies during campaigns. So, calling out McCain saying he's lying by somehow implying that Obama does not tell lies is ridiculous.
They are all politicians, they all lie. Stop being so naive.

From a political view, it was as I expected. From a humane view, I was disgusted with the women from the view. They may think he's a liar when it comes to his politics but they showed him little to no respect. How dare these women bash him about his choice for vp. Why would they not give them a fair chance especially when someone gave each of those WOMEN a chance. I mean, if this episode has brought up so much controversy, don't you think that this was even a bit unfair?!

I can't beleive people are complaining about these women disrespecting McCain, while not paying attention to the lies he was telling. Don't you care about that. Wouldn't you want a president that tells the truth? I guess telling lies does not disqualify someone from running for the highest office in our nation. How could you trust him?

Sarah Palin and John Mccain are big fat liars. Its just that simple.

Whoops, I meant to address that to "more lies"

Posted by: nick | Sep 14, 2008 12:46:18 PM

In response to blah,

Obama only recieved $3.3 million dollars through his own sponsorship. He requested earmarks in accord with other Illinois lawmakers. They didn't recieve the total requested amount over those years.

There is no reason for any Democrat to respect John McCain. His campaign strategy has been characterized by scare tactics, ridicule, brow beating, guilt trips, and disgusting lies.

They were not loud and disrespectful of McCain; HE was disrespectful to come on THEIR show and LIE! LIE! LIE! Did he think he was talking to YOU

_____

A lack of Comprehension or a Lie?

Earmarks?

Earmarks?

No, she didn't request earmarks as governor...well, except for nearly $200 million this year.

A lack of comprehension or did he just not know the answer to Barbara Walters' question regarding Sarah as reformer. When John McCain was asked who Sarah would reform in Washington, he could not come up with a coherent answer. The answer he gave in fact, seemed to be to a question that he asked himself. No wonder Barbara was frustrated. No wonder she tried to restate the question several times. No wonder the Republicans are upset and once again flailing about, attempting to vilify those who would attempt to get a simple answer to a simple question. Shame on the Republicans.

Earlier this week, Barbara Walters was openly questioning the change of McCain and his campaign. I'm still rather amused he did not have his people watching to see how things were going before Friday.

As for the fact John McCain, an admitted adulterer on his second wife with a pinup vp is wearing an apron on Rachel Ray that says 'Kiss The Candidate,' well, I think some will lose their appetites.

Can you imagine McCain discussing "real" issues with World leaders? He couldn't handle the pressure of simply being called out on capaign distortions. Embarrassing to say the least.

John McCain has sold himself out for the chance of being President. The fact that after decades of being known as a "Maverick" (which lacks merit) he has bowed to the GOP to be their nominee sickens me.

When he chose Sarah as his V.P. the first thing I said was what, there were no QUALFIED Republicans in Congress? What exactly does that say about the Republicans who are currently serving?

Now that Greenspan has called out the flaws in his "tax cut" philosophy it will be interesting to see how many Americans can actually "grasp" this fundamental economic concept. Something tells me it they would rather say Greenspan knows less than they do. That's sad and laughable at the same time.

I don't think I have ever seen anyone treated as rude as these 3 ladies treated John McCain. Only Sherri and Elisabeth acted respectful. Even Barbara was loud and obnoxious.

----

Please, Senator, tell us who Sarah would reform in Washington. What, what? OMG! This is too hard a question! I can't think. I can't think!

Thank you! Thank you! Now will the front page story be "When are we going to have anywhere, anytime interviews with Sarah Palin?" Since we can't ask her, thanks for asking a few things of McCain. Nothing else should be mentioned about Palin from the Press except "When do we get to ask you on the spot questions?" That is it. She could possibly end up our President. It is up to the Press to bully for this. All the other candidates have been drilled and drilled. Thanks!

I am a white woman college educated medical professional and registered Republican.

I totally congratulate the ladies on the view for saying outright John McCain has lie and his lies have been proven without a doubt. I was shocked John McCain "continues to lie right in interview saying he is not lying."

A couple of these ladies are Republican.
A couple are not - appear to be Democrats. Makes no difference!! These ladies are just asking for why he is lying and continues to lie in just these two examples?

John McCain is lying!!

My thanks to the women on the View!! They are saying they know!!!!! John is lying!! But then he has been lying alot lately. All proven by new media, analyst, fact check, etc. John McCain continues to lie alkl the time!!

Americans have a right for knowing the truth!! Americans go investigate. I am so ashamed to say I am Republican.

I have renewed respect for Barbara Walters. Not that I EVER liked Star Jones, I believed Barbara engaged in cover up and vengefulness in how she "disposed" of Star. Again, I never liked Star either. Barbara redeemed herself by holding McCain's feet to the fire. He has to be the world's greatest liar and the more that fact is revealed, the better off we all are. Thanks Barbara. I'm a fan again.
