To the Ladies of 'The View,' McCain Misrepresents Palin's Earmark Record
September 12, 2008 2:38 PM
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., once again steered clear of straight talk when discussing his running mate's record on earmarks today.
BARBARA WALTERS: What is she going to reform, specifically?
JOHN MCCAIN: Well, first of all, earmark spending, which she vetoed half a billion dollars worth in the state of Alaska.
WALTERS: She also took some earmarks.
JOY BEHAR: A lot.
MCCAIN: No, not as governor, she didn't. She vetoed –- Look, well, the fact is she's a reform governor.
Palin may be a reform governor -- there's a good case to be made that she is -- but, yes, she did seek and receive earmarks. McCain's claim that "as governor she didn't" is simply not so.
Why the McCain campaign is so dead-set on not being honest about her record, instead of emphasizing the positive, is really quite bewildering.
The Anchorage Daily News reported this month that Palin in 2007 sought "52 earmarks valued at $256 million in Palin’s first year. This year, the governor’s office asked the delegation to help them land 31 earmarks valued at $197 million."
USA Today reported in March of this year that "Arizona, the second fastest growing state in the nation, will receive just $18.70 per capita in federal earmarks this fiscal year. By comparison, Alaska — with roughly a tenth of Arizona's population — is set to receive $506.34 per capita, the highest in the nation, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group which tracks earmarks. The state of Alaska receives about three times as much as Arizona receives in actual dollars, $346 million to $119 million."

Can we put up some of your rights for debate and see what kind of body language you show?

I don't care.....Obama on the other hand has 932 million in earmarks!

I live in IL, where are those 932 million? We sure could use them.

Funny you want equality only when its convenient.
Everytime McCaine opens his mouth he lies.

Isn't it ironic that evangelical and fundamentalist christians are rewarding a political team, McCain/Palin, who are so obviously committing the sin of lying? Last I knew, "thou shalt not bear false witness" was one of the 10 commandments. What will I tell my children?

The women of the view showed John McCain more respect than he deserves. In theory nobody respects a liar. In practice, the more John McCain lies, the more republicans seem to respect him. That's what I call values voting.

Even as Governor of Alaska,
Palin has continued to be
a major earmarks requester.
She continued to do what she
had done as mayor of Wasilla.
The ladies of The View were
familiar with her mayoral
record but not with her penchant
for federal pork as Governor.
McCain ever the wiley politician
countered by saying, No as
Governor she was a reformer and
opposed pork barrels.
The ladies didn't challenge him
on that - just another one of
his far too many lies.

There are two kinds of Media. the decent Media and the Media from Hell. The View is in the last category.

To the cackling hags on "The View" : it is disgusting how you fawn over a phony like Barack Obama and his equally phony spouse. You never question him about his experience -none. Nor his record - none. Nor his past associations, plenty. If he is such a great agent of change then ask him what he did in Chicago and that corrupt political machine he was part of. What did he do to change it ??? You won't ask him the question because he did absolutely nothing and it doesn't fit your agenda.

To win the election Obama and/or his proxies in the "objective" news media have to take Palin out. They may have underestimated her. The American people have decided they like her and are as likely to shoot the (biased) messenger than turn on her.

Wow, they totally disrespected MCcain. I don't recall them treating Mr or Mrs.Obama like that. That's fine that they don't agree with his views, but why go after him and his wife that way. There is an appropriate way you ask questions and press issues and this wasn't it.

I would like to thank the ladies of the View for asking John McCain all of the questions that I wanted to ask him myself. I don't know why he keeps saying that if Barack Obama had taken me up on the town hall meetings I wouldn't have to go negative that doesn't make any sense. To see John McCain continue to lie like that after being called out was a disgrace on his part. I lost all respect for John McCain after he started lying, pandering and running such a negative campaign. I want to say thank you so much for caring about providing your viewers with the truth. I don't know why everyone thinks that this was John McCain's first time on your show and that you are always mean to him. Or that Elisabeth didn't question Barack about the Reverend Wright situtation because she did. I don't know why people want Michelle Obama to be grilled when she isn't running for office. And as for Joe Biden he has been on meet the press more than 40 times and has ran for president twice so he has been vetted. As for Ms. Palin every American should want reporters to help us to get to know her. You don't just hear one speech from a person and say bam I'm sold. Obama has been on the O'Reilly factor and answered questions to O'Reilly. He went to Saddleback and answered questions from the Christian right. Obama has been campaigning for over a year. People you need to admit when your candidate is lying. If Barack lies, I say he lied. If I disagree on his policy position I say I disagree. Don't sit their like lemmings and follow McCain off a cliff. You should demand the truth out of your candidate regardless. If he lies to you during the campaign even after being called out on it, I promise you he will lie to you when he is in office. John McCain promised he would not run negative ads on September 11 but he did so any way, that is a lie. And as for Obama accepting earmarks he never said he was against them. It is the hypocrisy of it all. Palin is a social conservative and McCain is a fiscal conservative and that's the truth. And think about this if John McCain is such a maverick and says how has he changed I am still the same. Then when was the last time he bucked the administration?

Our domestic agenda has become a war of the classes, as Mrs McCain so deftly demonstrated when she took such great offense over a question of how many houses they own. They are very privileged insiders. She should know it is not a matter of adopting a baby or visiting Georgia. It is a matter of REAL solutions for human beings that deserve to live an independent life of safety in health with access to education. NOT SENDING OUR BOYS OVER TO DIE IN "TIN CAN" HUMVIES, WITHOUT THE PROPER EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING just to grease the palms of people at the back door of Halliburton and other war-machine interests!!!

I think the questions that were put to McCain and his wife were right on target and well thought out in attempting to flush their real agendas. I am a 57 year old wife and mother that was shocked, saddened and very insulted in McCain's choice of a running mate. It only proves the USA will continue it's almost decade long anti-intellectual march into the insanity of a book-burning group who can not think beyond their own limited lives.

I am 50 years old and I have never voted in a Presidential election because I can't tolerate the sleazy tactics and lies of politicians like John McCain..Thank you, Barbara, for trying to make McCain accountable for his lies. McCain has lied so much that I don't think he knows the truth anymore. I'm voting for Obama.

I have to say I am shocked. Iam not a citizen and not able to vote. But first of all I am shocked how disrespectful they treated McCain. No matter what you think of him the man deserves some respect. I think a lot of you have forgotten where you came from, what makes this country so great. The Democrats are certainly not the ones conserving this greatness. It seems like their goal is to convert this great country into some other country. Like government healthcare. People get real, it sounds great but in reality it doesn't work and what this really boils down to is that a lot of you libs are a disgrace to this great country which was buildt on hard work and faith not on handouts and welfare, which is what Barack stand for. And if they cant get what they want through politics they get it from the no good liberal judges that think they are above the will of the people. They just cant move on. McCain is the only one who represents true American Values.
McCain/Palin
