Unanswered Question Watch, Day 14: Are McCain-Palin Endorsing Sen. Ted Stevens' Re-election?

September 23, 2008 10:10 AM

You may recall that, two weeks ago today, I asked the McCain-Palin campaign a very simple question.

To wit:

*

From: Jake Tapper
To: McCain-Palin Campaign
Tuesday, September 09, 2008 8:38 AM
Subject: Question

Are McCain/Palin endorsing Sen. Stevens' re-election?

*

A simple and fair question, right?

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, is up for re-election this year. He's been indicted on corruption-related charges, and how McCain and Palin feel about whether the self-proclaimed King of Pork should return to the U.S. Senate would do a lot to say whether the two are reformers, or partisans, first.

The response from the McCain-Palin campaign was as simple as the question I'd asked:

*

From: McCain-Palin Campaign
To: Tapper, Jake
Sent: Tue Sep 09 09:02:41 2008
Subject: RE: Question

Will get back to you.

*

It has now been more than two weeks. I have re-sent the question several times. They do not want to answer the question.

Combine that with the facts that Sen. McCain, R-Ariz., has gone 41 days without taking questions from the press corps following him around, and that Gov. Palin, R-Alaska, has gone every one of the 25 days, since she was introduced to the nation as McCain's running mate, without holding a press conference.

It all adds up to a campaign that seems to think it should be handed over the keys to leadership of the Free World without having to answer straightforward, substantive, tough questions from the Fourth Estate.

That's called lack of accountability.

Which begs the question if a McCain-Palin administration would even hold press conferences.

Like Puxatawney Phil, McCain is about to emerge to speak with the press today.

If he is frightened by his shadow, its 6 more weeks of press black outs.

All hail the artful dodgers.

They want the highest political office in the Land but they don't want to be answerable to the People.

The last time I checked, we are in a Democracy and the power is supposed to belong to the People.

The Press represents the silent majority and the remain the fourth estate of the three arms of Government and they are the People that amplify our voices.

Any Political Office Aspirant that can not tolerate the "nuisance" of these People's Representative is not worth being voted to Office.

Thinking-
when I see a remark from any camp, I research everything I can on that subject.
Past. Present. and a possible Future.
But this only leads to a personal opinion.
I could state all kinds of facts, but you will only see it as an opinion.
You, yourself must study, what You want to learn.
If You do not want to know more, about Palin. Then you will know, no more, than you do.

I wonder how many autographs she'll get while she's at the U.N. I mean what can she actually speak with AUTHORITY about. Palin at the U.N. is a disgrace to our country.

Why would McCain actually send her to speak with anyone of substance? Thank god the weather is nice in NYC, that way they have something to talk about.

Here is another way to put it.

If a New Iraqi leader was to step up and say, "I will rule this country very well".
Does anyone in Iraq, OR the rest of the World, want to know everything about this person?

Everything means 'good and bad'. But I at least look for everything.

Obama fans, look at her good side.
McCain fans, look at her hidden side.

Thats Equality.
That SHOULD be America.

The same should be applied to ALL candidates, and only your personal opinion, will sway your vote.
But only through, educated questioning, can you Truely be informed.

The End.
Maybe... :)

@Carolyn

"I could go on and on. Enquiring minds want to know, Jake."

Here, just to make it easy for you before you "go on and on":

Samantha: Kurtz's work isn't a challenge to the media, the guy is a hack. He's been trying to push this story for ages, even before he had access to the CAC records.

Kurtz's problem is that the William Ayers that Obama knows isn't a terrorist. He's a Professor at the University of Illinois. "Obama knows Professor!" isn't much of a story, so he has to make Ayers out to be as much of an evil radical as possible.

Unfortunately he has to stretch to do that, and it shows. For example, Kurtz writes "The point, says Mr. Ayers in his "Teaching Toward Freedom," is to "teach against oppression," against America's history of evil and racism, thereby forcing social transformation.""

Ayers did write "teach against oppression", but... well, here's the full quote, see for yourself:

"I want to teach against oppression and subjugation, for example, and against exploitation, unfairness, and unkindness, and I want others to join me in that commitment. I want to teach towards freedom, for enlightenment and awareness, wide awakeness, protection of the weak, cooperation, generosity, compassion, and love. I want my teaching to mean something worthwhile in the lives of my students and in the larger worlds that they will inhabit and create. I want it to mean something in mine."

Yeah, that's really some shocking stuff there. Teaching towards freedom? In the land of the free? How dare he!

And oddly enough, he doesn't say anything about 'teaching against America's history of evil and racism'.

Kurtz is a hack. I'll be interested in hearing more about CAC when someone without an agenda reviews their records.

@Carolyn: (courtesy of Factcheck, once again)

"Ask him if he still going to tax large families with homes greater than 2,400 sq feet if they make less than 250,000."

Q: Would Obama tax my profits if I sell my home? Would he tax my IRA? Would he tax my water?

A: No. A new e-mail being circulated about Obama's tax proposals is almost entirely false...The e-mail continues with a string of made-up taxes that it falsely claims Obama has proposed. He has not proposed a tax on new homes with more than 2,400 square feet, or a new gasoline tax or a tax on retirement accounts. The most laughably false claim is that Obama would tax "water."

Carolyn, you should take a minute and think about WHO your sources are. If you take all the emails forwarded to you at face value, you are not making an educated decision with your vote. At the very least you can vent your gripes about valid points. Check your propaganda at the door.

Four weeks have gone by and still no press conferences. Yet you routinely publish any trash they put out for McCain and against Obama. You are being used.

The press is just a paper tiger, the latest little fuss will amount to nothing. His supporters love it.

Posted by: Thinking | Sep 23, 2008 12:52:44 PM

Thanks for continuing to sound this alarm. At least some of us are worried about what it would mean to elect a ticket that so clearly has no regard for the role of a free press in a functioning democracy.

Arthur, So what you are saying , is that, if a stranger walks up to you, and says,"I will now control your life", you would not even care who that stranger is.
You would just say, "Ok". And follow them around.

SHEEP.
Vote Independant.

@Arthur:

"Nobody is crying over's the MSM's growing irrelevance."

Let's just get rid of the MSM, then we can just take all candidates for their word. That's what the McCain/Palin campaign is trying to do...I don't take ANY candidate for their word...

Just in - Palin press may boycott the UN convention because Palin will only allow photographers & cameramen - no print reporters, no questions. She only wants photo-ops.

Per Politico:

"Palin’s handlers informed the small print press contingent covering her campaign that the print reporter designated to cover the events, Elizabeth Holmes of the Wall Street Journal, would not be allowed to cover the sprays."

"The sprays are basically glorified photo opportunities during which journalists can snap photos and film footage and – if they’re lucky – shout a question or two at Palin and her company before she adjourns for private meetings."

"The campaign’s reasoning was that there were not going to be questions or statements at the sprays, so they were only appropriate for photographers and cameramen."

And McCain will finally give a press conference today in Michigan.

Q: Was Barack Obama really a constitutional law professor?
A: His formal title was "senior lecturer," but the University of Chicago Law School says he "served as a professor" and was "regarded as" a professor.

Posted by: In the dark | Sep 23, 2008 12:40:59 PM

It's very amusing whenever the media appoints itself as Guardian of the Public Interest.

Stop crying about the interests of the media not being promoted by McCain/Palin.

The MSM shot itself in the foot with (a) being so in the tank for Obama, and (b) being so hysterical about the Palin pick. The public sees the bias, as shown in poll after poll (and admitted officially by the liberal Washington Post).

Nobody is crying over's the MSM's growing irrelevance.

Posted by: Arthur | Sep 23, 2008 12:38:54 PM

from the WSJ:
"Mr. Ayers is the founder of the "small schools" movement (heavily funded by CAC), in which individual schools built around specific political themes push students to "confront issues of inequity, war, and violence." He believes teacher education programs should serve as "sites of resistance" to an oppressive system... The point, says Mr. Ayers in his "Teaching Toward Freedom," is to "teach against oppression," against America's history of evil and racism, thereby forcing social transformation."

In essence, he wants people to "think outside the box." Radical? You be the judge. (is promoting bilingualism "radical" too?)
Kurtz raises some interesting points, but there is little substance. Give me concrete examples. Kurtz does the interpretation for us.

Captain America,

What does the legal process dealing with Stevens have to do with whether Palin endorses him or not?

And if Palin is waiting for said process to be complete, why not just say so?

Posted by: Ryan C | Sep 23, 2008 12:28:44 PM

Poor Jake

They will not answer my email.

Whine. Whine. Whine. Day 14

Posted by: Ryan C | Sep 23, 2008 12:28:38 PM

"lack of accountability"......

Kind of like ABC hosting Obama advertisements on it's web site here at Political Punch and not disclosing how much revenue the Obama campaignis paying ABC for these links.......

And then, surprise surprise whining they will not answer my email.

Or how about ABC (or is it Jake) not liking criticism so they make changes to and/or delete posts critical of ABC's coverage...."tough questions" ABC and Jake cannot answer.

Posted by: Cathy | Sep 23, 2008 12:25:24 PM

I believe the simple answer, Jake, is to wait until the legal proceedings are complete.

Legal hearings are currently underway. We do believe in due process, Jake, heh?

Jake, we do believe in innocent until proven guilty?

Fool
