Union Chief: ‘Jesus Was a Community Organizer’

September 09, 2008 4:39 PM

In Lebanon, Virginia, right now United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts is giving a characteristically enthusiastic introduction for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in this southwest Virginia burg.

He said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was more "Tonto" than "Maverick," and in a riff on community organizers -- defending them from attacks from Republicans seeking to belittle Obama's first job -- he said that he, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other notables were all community organizers.

"Jesus was a community organizer," Roberts said.

Martin Luther King was an organizer. He mobilized people to take on hypocritical politicians. Palin bashed politicians in part of her speech, then argued that politicians like her are more responsible than community organizers, like Martin Luther King.

Regarding this Obama = Jesus / Palin = Pontius Pilot thing.
I think that Pilot saying he washes his hands of this man is more representative of Obama voting “present” rather than yea or nay.

I don’t recall Jesus registering voters, or getting youth together to play hoop or being involved in any political aspect of government. His message was quite different and had to do with organizing ones self not the community.

The most renowned community organizer in history was Hitler, that is how he came to power too and look what happened there.

I find the comment that "Jesus was a community organizer" highly offensive. To me this is mocking the Son of God for political purposes.

Jesus is the Son of God, he is our Redeemer and Savior.

To compare Jesus to any person, is inappropriate and offensive. This is way out of bounds.

People are completly missing the point of the comment that Jesus was a Community organizer. He wasn't comparing Obama to Jesus, he was adding credibility to the job of community organizer that so many republicans seem to look down on. I'm so sick of Republicans twisting the truth.

I personally am offended. I was a Hillary supporter who has always believed in both sides of the issues in certain areas. The Democrats have lost me. Comparing a man, a simple man actually to Jesus, is truly the seal on the coffin for me.

Wow. those of you thinking obama is being compared to jesus are just downright obtuse. COME ON!! Stop already!
LISTEN TO THE ISSUES!! USE YOUR COMPUTERS FOR MORE THAN PORN!!!
If the repubs want to have a dangerous calendar girl who says that "...Our leaders, our national leaders are sending them (troops) out on a task that is from God..." and that, "...There is a plan and that plan is God's plan..."
Please stop getting caught up in the spin and open your eyes and put on those listening ears and don't let the fear rule you!
DON'T LET THE SPIN WIN!!!

Keep offending people, Obama supporters. It's working, really working...to send people to the other side. Comparing ANYONE to Christ as if they were on the same level is offensive.

WOW - so this "jesus was a community organizer" and Pontius Pilate was a governeor has now come out of the motuhs of how many prominent Oblah blah sychophants over the past 3 days?

Does anyone NOT think that somone was sitting in OZ Central dreaming this up?

Here's a clue:

Jesus was the SON of God -

HE was Not SENT to ORGANIZE anything

He was sent to remind of us Gods expectations of us here on EARTH .

To offer himself up for our sins and allow us to be redeemed.

DEMS REALLY need to get off the MESSIAH juice- REALLY

Jesus did not bomb innocent civilians or try to build a bridge to nowhere. Instead He called us to serve others, calling it the basis for "eternal life," when we serve "the least of these," or again, cross the road to help the "good Samaritan." Jesus did not call us to mock those who follow his teachings or endorse and follow those who do. At the same Palin claims being a politician is the ideal. Politicians are the responsible ones she asserted, not those who serve others. Someone can't imagine Jesus would have anything to do with ACORN, a group that goes into Americas ghettos and does what politicians have failed to do. But 2000 years ago conservative Christian leaders, protecting their positions of power, could not imagine that Jesus was the Messiah. He became involved with "outcasts," those denigrated by society.

you all need to boil a little longer. Not done yet.

I don't have a problem with community organizations. I think they can create change for the people that need it the most. However, when money earmarked for community organizations goes into the political machine, we need to rethink their usefullness. Why should we increase our earmarks when they have excess money to divert to the Democratic Party? Why should taxpayers money (both Democrats and Republicans) go to the Democratic Party. ACORN has endorsed Obama this week and have donated to his election. As a Republican, I object to my tax dollars going to a political party, when it should be used for helping the poor and unemployed.

Of course Jesus was more than simply a community organizer...but indeed he was, as were those in the Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Suffrage Movement etc...

Pilate was a mayor.

Yeah....But Republicans believe Jesus has taken sides and joined the Republican party.....he is now a reformer and quit his community organizing...

Posted by: indy_voter | Sep 10, 2008 9:41:54 AM

Jesus is the THE ONE.

Obama is NOT.

Posted by: McCain/Palin 2008 | Sep 10, 2008 8:31:00 AM

But as fas as I could tell, Jesus DID not vote "PRESENT".

Posted by: McCain/Palin 2008 | Sep 10, 2008 8:29:23 AM

I certainly can't speak for Jesus but I can't imagine Jesus would have anything to do with today's ACORN.

Actually, you can't send an idiot to Harvard. And an idiot will never be chosen to run the Harvard Law Review. An idiot can however transfer to six different universities in five years. And an idiot can graduate 894 out of 899 in his Naval Academy class.

There is nothing honorable in lying about your time as a POW. There is nothing honorable about voting FOR torture. There is nothing honorable about supporting insurance coverage for Viagra but not birth control.

Anyone who feel the needs to refer to Obama by his middle name is a racist xenophobe.

The real difference between a community organizer and a mayor/governor is you don't get to bill your travel expenses to your house to taxpayers and you can never leave a city that has no debt in over $22 Million in debt while you "serve the people".

Obama 08!

If Republicians compared themselves to GOD or a higher power, the media and the Democrats would be chanting that the Republicians were anti religion. As a Christian, I always have to be tolerate and understanding or I am considered prejudice . When people are anti Christian they are just expressing themselves. Talk about double standards.

So far we have learned that Palin is against Jesus and supports teen pregnancy.
