While On Ticket That Has Opted Out of Federal Matching Funds, Biden Seeks Them for Failed Presidential Campaign
September 24, 2008 10:25 AM
To be clear: there isn’t anything wrong, illegal, immoral, or untoward with Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., seeking federal matching funds for his own failed erstwhile presidential campaign, while being the vice presidential nominee for a ticket that isn’t using public money.
It's just something of a disconnect.

Dear XXXX:
I would like to preface this note by thanking you for your previous contribution to Biden for President, Inc. At the end of August, you were sent a letter from Biden for President, Inc. regarding our continued effort to obtain federal matching funds for your contribution through the Federal Elections Commission (FEC).
By signing the attached document and faxing it back to us, we will be able to submit your contribution for matching funds. These funds will greatly help us in retiring our final debt.
I ask that you please return the signed document back to us no later than Thursday, September 25th, the FEC deadline for submissions. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks again for your continued support!

Biden dropped out after his 1% showing in Iowa. How much debt could this guy have? He should have a surplus.

Just what is the point of publishing this? It is totally irrelevant to the current presidential campaign.
With everything else going on, publishing something like this is just plain divisive, and very lame!

Debt retiring.
Very common after a campaign that does not make it.

Hey isn't this a race between Obama vs McCain? What does Biden failed run at the Presidency have to do how Obama felt about this issue all along? The fact that so many voters from all walks of life have contributed to Obama's campaign through thick and thin is the real story. For the first time in history voters are participating in record numbers. It tells the story of the American voters being the real heroes in this election.

This is not to say that there was anything immoral with John McCain signing a loan agreement earlier this year to seek federal campaign funds after the fact to pay off that loan if his campaign failed, although the FEC chief questioned it's legality. Jake's disconnect is just something.

Matt,
What I am saying is that ABC over represented the number of black voters.

Mr. Tapper,
How is this a disconnect exactly? Obama decided against taking matching funds BEFORE he asked Biden to be his running mate. As the leader of the ticket, it's his call. As the vice-presidential candidate, Biden's role is to SUPPORT and offer council to the presidential nominee.
It doesn't seem like you spend this much time on McCain's numerous "gaffes" (some even more serious) as you do on Biden's "gaffes" (e.g. the gaffe meter). I like the fact that he speaks his mind (though I don't always agree with what he says) and is not some marionette who only recites talking points given to him by the campaign.

ABC-WaPo poll overrepresented black voters. read the fine print
"The survey includes additional interviews with randomly selected African Americans, for a total of 163 black respondents"
----------------------
"This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone Sept. 19-22, 2008, among a random sample of 1,082 adults, including an oversample of African Americans (weighted to their correct share of the national population), for a total of 163 black respondents."
It appears they oversampled the African American population in an attempt to CORRECTLY reflect the vote.
SORRY GEEVILL, NICE TRY THOUGH.
However, I am not convinced polls mean much. They seem to shift with the wind. The debates may very well determine the outcome of yhis election.

"163 black respondents"
That's actually a good representation b/c it's one of the main reasons Obamm's tied in North Carolina and opening a wider lead in Michigan etc
What's under represented is the generation w/ cell phone and high-tech technology (young voters). If these are the poll numbers now Obama will win by a larger margin.
Either way it's good news for the Obama camp when it comes to the national AND state by state polls.

"When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here’s what happened,'" Barack Obama’s running mate recently told the CBS Evening News.
The only problems with that statement are Herbert Hoover was president during the stock market crash of 1929 and television wasn't invented until 1939.
Oh that Joe, keep 'em coming! The things he has to say just to make the news!

The New York Times writes about McCain’s and Obama’s conditions on the bailout plan. “Between them, the two men demanded that nine overlapping conditions for the bailout be met, most of them proposals they have already made. Mr. Obama went further Tuesday in outlining his conditions, calling for a payback for taxpayers if the bailout succeeds; a bipartisan board to oversee the bailout; limits on any federal money going to compensate Wall Street executives; and aid to homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages.”
==========
Once again, for those who question whether or not Obama has a plan, READ!

Obama said he didn't want a "yes" man. Careful what you wish for. Oh, that Joe!
Joe also said in Ohio on Saturday that there will be "no new coal plants in the US", clean or otherwise. Instead we need to teach China how to burn coal cleanly. What? Just daffy.

That was a clean, articulate letter.
Did Biden sign a loan agreement promising to go after federal funds like McCain if his campaign went into the tank? Notice that Jake does not mention how nmany different positions
McCain took on public financing of his own campaign. This is not to accuse Jake of bias. It is to point out that sometimnes Jake goes to great length to poin out what candidates do not say.

That's a Democratic politician for you. Says one thing and does an other.
