A Note About Comments Being Deleted

October 01, 2008 10:23 AM

Some conservative bloggers have recently written about having their responses deleted from our comments section. They feared it had something to do with their political views.

The concern confused me, because obviously that's not ABC News' policy, and as anyone who regularly reads the comments here can attest, conservatives contribute responses all the time. As do liberals, moderates, etc. etc.

After checking in with the honchos at ABC News.com, and the people in our legal department, I'm told that this was the issue: ABCNews.com deletes user comments which attempt to include a url.

This is the policy only because of abusive spammers who user comment sections and message boards to distribute links containing a range of objectionable material.

Hope this clears matters up.

- jpt

UPDATE: To make this even clearer, I personally do not moderate the comments, nor do I have an assistant who does that. There is an outside company that monitors comments, which ABC News hired.  If some of you have had comments deleted in the past that did not contain an outside URL, and were not in other ways a violation of ABC News policy (against profanity, or defamatory attacls, for instance), please post them and tell me when they were deleted and I will forward to the people in charge. The goal of the comments policy is to create a forum for lively but civil debate.

UPDATE 2: Tom, James and MayBee, thanks -- that's very helpful. I am forwarding these to the people in charge, who are then looping in the monitors. I'm not sure what's going on here, but again, I want this to be a place where people of all political stripes can engage in lively, civil debates. For those who've noted that most people don't keep their postings, if you can even give me a basic description of what the blog post was about, and what you said -- as MayBee did -- that's helpful.

FINAL UPDATE:  I take very seriously the charge that there are ideological considerations being given to our monitoring blog postings. ABC News takes the charge very seriously as well.

So even though I was on Capitol Hill all day Wednesday covering what is by any measure a far more important story -- the economic crisis -- a bunch of us have spent much of the day reviewing complaints from individuals.

Here's the bottom line: The monitors say those whose complaints about alleged bias we reviewed today have other reasons to blame for their posts being removed, and for being blocked from posting.

I don't want to call out any of the bloggers by name, or even nom-de-plume, but perhaps those complaining can see themselves in the following list.

And for anyone not directly impacted, but concerned about the charge, perhaps this will eludicate the reality behind the charge.

Blogger J -- monitors say you have a habit of not only posting links and directions to non-ABC News video, which is a violation of ABC News policy, but of insulting other commentors, calling them "morons" or "imbeciles" on a regular basis.

Blogger L -- you in the past have had comments unpublished for telling other posters to shut the f up as well as for posting links.

Blogger A -- you have been unpublished many times for making inappropriate comments instructing others to stop having unprotected gay sex
.
Blogger R -- you're generally only unpublished when you and other posters continually attack one another.

Blogger K -- you can't call other posters "scum."

Blogger T -- you need to stop referring to other posters as "Nazis" or "Nazi fascists."

Blogger J --  you often post the same comments numerous times.

Blogger M -- all your posts are up. Maybe you've misplaced them since I tend to blog a lot, but they're there.

Blogger H --  this is not a blog where you are welcome to say that someone's personal code of ethics is like a prostitute’s personal code of virtue. You also sometimes spam.

Posters of all political stripes are more than welcome to contribute lively and civil comments.

Please don't post links to other websites and please try to be civil to one another, and I think this perceived problem should go away.

There are plenty of websites where you can insult each other with impunity. This is not one of them.

Thanks

Jake

Ryan C: yep we can agree on that...I really don't think there is bias, I just don't get it...

Wade,

I am unsure of the criteria as well.

Sometimes we are allowed to post snips of articles, other times we are not.

Sometimes heated conversations get terminated, sometimes they rage on.

Jake, many of my posts have been deleted that are definitely not vulgar or untrue. Dem's blogs which are downright vulgar and nasty to McCain / Palin have remained proudly on your board. If you noticed, I have not posted anything in the past several days as I had promised myself never to post again on your blog. I had convinced myself that the Obama Squad to silence any crtique against him had overtaken your blog - with your permission. If the outside company that monitors comments, which ABC News hired is doing this, then you may want to check to see if they are the SS for Obama. Woe to this Country if BO wins!

In any event, if any of my posts get deleted again, I certainly will not be posting (or reading) your board ever again! But I really don't think that you care!

Jill:

I have to respectfully disagree. I have seen comments of mine that are very inoffensive deleted (I support McCain). I have also been surprised when I have noticed Obama supporters' messages deleted, because I didn't think they crossed any lines either. Then, I will notice some pretty outrageous comments that remain on the blog (not often). I really try not to be invective here...I think most people are pretty tame, even when they get kind of spirited...rarely delete worthy. I definitely understand why Jake is wondering, "huh?" because I am too.

I am genuinely mystified as to why certain posts get deleted...it seems almost random sometimes...

Posted by: Wade | Oct 1, 2008 7:13:44 PM

Jake, Either you're not being straight - or the censors aren't being straight. Comments aren't deleted because they contain certain acronyms, or because they contain profanity or because they are acrimonious (in fact, the nastier the better, as far as I can tell). They are not deleted when they contain outright lies, and only on a few occasions when they are outright plagerism from another site - even when they are called out. Censorship is random (from these posts it sounds like both anti-Obama and anti-McCain posts are deleted). There is one site with nastier comments - and that one seems to have no censorship at all. Posters are allowed to use "facts" from pseudo-sources like Investor's Business Daily, which pretends to run financial tips - when it's really the equivalent of WorldNetDaily. The article referenced above is part of an 18-part series, completely baseless, all of which discusses the Marxism of the Obamas. 18-part series. Somebody should tell her mama. I think she'll be surprized. And after reading the Paulson bill, I don't think we have to look too far to find the Marxists. If you need more help - try reading the House Alternative Bailout for Lobbyists. It suggests that we give tax breaks to companies who have overseas operations and have lost funds - effectively providing corporate welfare to corporations who have taken jobs away from Americans.

I'd say the "spam filter" is human, in this case. If NOT, are there certain words that are verboten by the filter?

The post I have stuck in the "spam filter" does include a response to a poster who used the word "socialism" -- which does appear in my reply.

attn ABC / jpt staff:

If you want an example of a needlessly-blocked post, I have one working right now in the "Crap Sandwich" thread.

The first time it didn't go through, I edited it for length and for a paragraph possibly-questionable to an Obama operative. But it still won't post.

But there's no way to "send" it, you see, as jpt suggests.

Posted by: Belle Starr | Oct 1, 2008 6:50:14 PM

Oh good grief.

Jake, as you know, I've read your blog and commented from time to time (especially in its earliest days). I've never seen bias here. You know that one of my own comments was removed not too many weeks ago, and I recognized that I'd crossed what I referred to in email with you as a "bawdiness boundary." It was entirely my own fault.

There's an appalling lack of civil discourse among the regular posters here. There is also a distinct agenda on *their* part, a determination to smear the so-called "liberal" media. They scream bias even while calling other people (and even you, Jake, their host -- they're in *your* house) foul names. Then they claim not to have broken rules.

It's an old game.

I think your blog is moderated fairly and posters both conservative and liberal (I'm as liberal as they come) have their comments deleted only when they break the rules.

I love reading your blog, Jake. Thank you for it. And honestly (I hope I can make this general statement without its being considered an attack), I think you've given the complainers more time than is their due. They need to be honest with themselves, or just go away.

L'Shanah Tovah.

Jake - I want to give credit where credit is due. None of my posts have ever been deleted.
In the interest of fairness, however, I want to disclose that this is my first post.
You should be advised that I intend to publish a book to be released on January 20, 2009 entitled "How Fair the Media Has Been Toward John McCain" - it will be a work of pure fiction. To give it some degree of credibility, I'm asking Gwenn I. to write the introduction on "The Appearance and Perception of Impartiality."
It should be a best-seller (I hope) - I need the money.

Its not just conservative posts that are deleted!!

I think it depends on the editor of the day!

Im leaning towards Obama and so are my posts and Ive had many deleted! Many which dont fit for the reasons given to warrant deletion!

Posted by: Alex Independent | Oct 1, 2008 5:01:02 PM

Oh, please. Send the deleted posts to you and you will send them on? Give me a break.

It shouldn't be necessary to copy our posts and check back to see if ABC's henchmen allowed them to stand or if it was a "no free speech for Republicans" Day at Jake's Place.

And no, I never post links. I know better than that.

Comment deletion is so common here that I've pretty much quit bothering with your posts. Consider this an exception.

Posted by: Lynn | Oct 1, 2008 4:54:30 PM

I am a McCain supporter, and have had my comments (sans urls-figured that would be a reason to delete) strangely deleted.

However, I have also noticed that some posters who appear to support Obama pretty strongly have their comments vanish as well...

I have always thought, huh? What gives?

Sorry Jake, I am still mystified.

Posted by: Wade | Oct 1, 2008 4:37:43 PM

Belle Starr:

Agreed re pro-Obama posters are not regulated at all regarding defamatory and swearing posts. That has been my experience, and why i stopped commenting on these Tapper articles a few weeks ago.

Posted by: JG | Oct 1, 2008 3:57:03 PM

Folks,
The above Tapper post simply isn't true. I used to get on this blog all the time and post comments, but got frustrated when many were deleted because of a conservative leaning i have.
Any comment that points out possible bias in reporting by tapper is also always immediately deleted in my experience. I'd say 20-25 comments of mine were deleted over the last six months.

Posted by: JG | Oct 1, 2008 3:53:09 PM

I had some totally innocuous comments deleted in the primaries. But what I said was civil and true. Their only crime was being pro-Obama. And I've seen other similar comments deleted too.

I think you need to take a second look at the comment review policy here. Transparency would help.

Posted by: Jeff | Oct 1, 2008 3:33:12 PM

In the interest of full disclosure, I once made a comment about Senator Kennedy that was very fairly deleted.

@ cincyr who wrote:

You might add, "If any of your comments are pro-McCain or anti-Obama or Democrat you will be identified as one that ABC does not want commenting and will censor you."

Big brother is here. People always said it would be the Republicans that would usher in Big Brother censorship, I never thought it would be the Democrats behind it all.

In my comment below:
Posted by: Tom | Oct 1, 2008 2:02:51 PM

there was a link to a screenshot of my posts that were deleted.

Now that link has been deleted!!!
How are we supposed to give you proof, Jake, if you delete it???

Posted by: Tom | Oct 1, 2008 2:22:17 PM

If none of your comments are being posted, you have somehow been identified as a spammer for previously posting too many urls.

To continue posting, you need to create a new name and put in a different e-mail address.
