Do Over! Palin Answers Katie Couric's Questions ... to Fox News' Carl Cameron (She Reads The Economist, She Says)

October 03, 2008 2:52 PM

In a post-debate interview today with Fox News' chief political correspondent Carl Cameron, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin provided some of the answers that seemed to elude her in her past interview with Katie Couric.

Cameron told her that some observers, pleased with her debate performance, asked, "Where was this Sarah Palin in the interview with Katie Couric?"

"OK, I'll tell you honestly," Palin said, "the Sarah Palin in those interviews is a little bit annoyed because it's like, man, no matter what you say, you're going to get clobbered. If you choose to answer a question, you are going to get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to try and pivot and go on to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about, you get clobbered for that, too."

Palin added, "In those Katie Couric interviews I did feel that there were a lot of things that she was missing in terms of an opportunity to ask what a vice presidential candidate stands for -- what the values are represented in our ticket. I wanted to talk about Barack Obama increasing taxes, which would lead to killing jobs, wanted to talk about his proposal to increase government spending by another trillion dollars. Some of his comments that he has made about the war that I think may, in my world, disqualifies someone from consideration as the next commander in chief. ... I wanted to talk about things like that. So, I guess I have to apologize about being a little annoyed, but that is also an indication of being outside that Washington elite, outside of the media elite, also, and just wanted to talk to Americans without the filter and let them know what we stand for."

"So, at the risk of annoying you," said Cameron, "when you are asked, 'What do you read, which papers and magazines?' You didn't answer it. Or, you said, 'I have all kinds of resources.'"

"Right, right, right," said Palin.

"Well, what do you read?" asked Cameron.

"I read the same things that other people across the country read, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and The Economist and some of these publications that we've recently even been interviewed through up there in Alaska. Because of everything that we're doing with oil and gas, a lot of the investment publications, especially, are interviewing us, asking us how we are being so successful up there in contributing to our nation's step towards energy independence...

"My response to her, I guess it was kind of flippant. But, I was sort of taken aback, like, the suggestion was, 'You're way up there in a far away place in Alaska, do you know that there are publications in the rest of the world that are read by many?' And I was taken aback by that because, I don't know, the suggestion just was a little bit of perhaps we're not in tune with the rest of the world."

Cameron then asked another Couric question that Palin didn't answer: about Supreme Court decisions that she disagrees with other than Roe v Wade. "As a conservative, there are some in the Republican Party who would expect a vice presidential nominee to understand judicial conservatives and to have something that they might object to," Cameron said.

"And that's fair, right, and on that one, true, I shouldn't have been so flippant and just sort of brushed aside that," Palin said, "because it was an important question and I should have answered it, and yeah, I can cite a lot of cases that I absolutely disagree with the Supreme Court on."

She elaborated: "A recent one, Kennedy v Louisiana, where the Supreme Court will tell a state that they can't impose the death penalty even on the heinous crimes of repeat child rapists, that a state ... its rights were taken away by the Supreme Court, and we would not be able to decide for ourselves whether the death penalty in a case like that could be implemented or not. That one, I'm certainly not a supporter of that decision."

Palin mentioned the Kelo case, also with the eminent domain -- "that affects me as governor. It affected me as a mayor, also. Property rights are so precious in this nation and for the Supreme Court to have sided with government instead of the people, the property owners on that -- that was frustrating. Another one ... personally affecting me also, the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The siding with the oil companies, they decimated Alaska's coastline and much of our fisheries and much of our coastal communities' livelihoods of people who live there, and they sided with Exxon on the punishment -- the punitive damage that was to be awarded, Exxon won on that one, and in a sense, that was frustrating."

Palin, asked about her relationship with the media, said, "What I need to do is commit to not be so annoyed and impatient with mainstream media. And I will make that commitment because I do understand that that is how I speak to the American people. In a position like this, I speak to you and through you, and that way, that message is received by American people. So, I apologize for the the, I guess, flippant response that I gave through that interview on a couple of questions.

"But I would ask also, then, that the media tries a little bit harder also," Palin went on. "And that this is a two-way street, that there is fairness, just objectivity and fairness and truth. That's all Americans ask for."

"Objectivity?" Cameron asked. "Fairness?"

"As we send our young men and women overseas in a war zone to fight for democracy and freedoms, including freedom of the press, we've really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here with those fighting the freedom of the press, and then the press, though not taking advantage and exploiting a situation, perhaps they would want to capture and abuse the privilege. We just want truth, we want fairness, we want balance."

Oh You guys You. You are funny. I have a question for Palin : Is Alaska on the East or West side of the Globe?

Posted by: Rene | Oct 5, 2008 2:07:44 AM

What a crock of crap in an interview!

Sp Palin goes to Right Wing outlets where they can act like they are FAIR AND BALANCED? AND WE SHOULD JUST ACCEPT THAT WE WILL GET ANOTHER RW IDEOLOGUE WHO SELLS THE REST OF THE COUNTRY WHO DOES NOT AGREE WITH THEIR AGENDA DOWN THE TUBES?

Is the rest of what goes for journalists going to take this b.s. lying down?

In reply to those curious about Alaskans and their motives, Sarah Palin was elected governor, because the Republican governor she replaced had the lowest ratings in Alaska history.(There are many reasons). Of the other two candidates, one had been a Democratic governor. (Alaskans abandoned the Democrats, because of natural resource development vs.conservation questions) The other candidate, also a Republican, was not well-known enough.I personally was amazed at her win. Many of us were amazed and astonished by McCain's choice of this novice governor. The real travesty would be if she were indeed elected to be the Vice President of the United States.Alaska is paying dearly for our misjudgment; let the country not do the same.

One of the good things about this election is that with such an overwhelming victory by the Dems., there is a very good chance that the Repubs. who have been progressively dumbing down their candidates since Reagan, just might have to be forced into giving the American public a candidate with a brain and the wisdom to use it correctly. I guess we will see in 2012.
Remember that these polling numbers we keep seeing do not include those without a land based phone line. Most people I know in their 20's only have cell phones. Thats alot of young new voters who are not represented in any of these polls we see.
Landslide for Obama/Biden in November.

Wow, this blog is sure populated by a bunch of folks spouting propaganda they've clearly just memorized, trying to sound intelligent, but reminding one vaguely of the hatred seen in the faces of those performing a stoning in Iran....

And those are the liberals! Wow, I used to be one of you!

It's just eating your lunches that she is kicking butt, and that people like her. You can't believe ol' Mac pulled a woman out of the hat (when you killed off the best candidate out there, who happened to be a woman - so much for the liberals' claim to be the party that can best represent women) and what's worse, you can't believe she is this GOOD as a raw, untrained, unsophisticated talent.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. If I wasn't impressed by McCain before, I sure am now. And as an ambitious woman that has traveled the world, taking my child with me on business trips, making that work-family thing balance as best one can, I totally back Palin, and am cheering her on!

I would like to copy and paste a quote directly from the Carl Cameron interview.

"There's not going to be the cutting and pasting and editing of any of our comments. Right on."

Power to the Palin.

I finally decided that Palin, in her last paragraph, says that the press, so as not to aid "those fighting freedom of the press," should not take advantage and exploit and "abuse the PRIVILEGE" of freedom of the press.

So much for the Bill of Rights.

But of course when you speak so elliptically, you can deny that there was any such meaning, or any meaning at all, in what you said.

I've read many daily newspapers and weekly and monthly magazines, for years and years, but I can't remember a single one of them!! I read the articles in them, but of course I don't remember what newspaper I'm reading at the time!! Yeah right, and I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you. Sarah is a terrible example for our children.

Sarah Palin was not treated badly by news reported prior to this last Fox Interview. News Reporters actually treated her with kids gloves. Couric was extremely nice. Sarah Palin has had plenty of time for adjusting to news interviews when running for mayor and while serving as governor for two years. Sarah Palin excuses and attacks upon media inexcusable. She is a Vice Presidential candidate and must to be ready to answer questions.

Posted by: Sharonklim | Oct 4, 2008 10:29:40 AM

Well Caribou Barbie

If you answer the questions like a dufus of course you are going to get clobbered.

Politics is all about know how to talk about stuff that you don't have a clue about.

Shhhhhh don't tell anyone. But Barack doesn't know a lot about certain things but he can definitely talk his way out of a corner.

Ms Palin ... she talks herself into a corner and turns on the big neon light "HEY LOOK OVER HERE.... I AM CLUELESS"

so much so that SNL doesn't even have to embellish the her words to make a joke.

I read all of them ......

how about

You know Katie.... not one particular one is coming to mind right now.

or

I don't even read. I just wink and smile and show a little leg and get all folksy and people just love that and they vote for me.

or

I wanna talk about barack's tax plan.

or

I wanna talk about my track record as a energy regulator.

Foxy Sarah Palin not good enough to make independent voters to vote McCain.
Too much talking but not any substance! Foxspin not Fair not Balanced!

Posted by: spin makeme dizzy | Oct 4, 2008 9:35:01 AM

I’m not really sorry to say some big Fox spin masters are in urgent need of psychiatric evaluation and help. They are the main reason for the election of Bush to White House, and for consequence they are responsible for his failure and the suffering of the American people! Now they are trying again to do the same, with Johnny Macaroni and Sarah Plain.!

"...we've really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here with those fighting freedom of the press."

I believe this is an attempt to kiss and make up with Charlie Gibson for whom Palin secretly has the hots.

Grey matter,

Thanks for the clarification.

I am glad to hear that.

My unreserved apologies to Alaskans for jumping to conclusion about them on account of Gov. Palin's inaptitude

Posted by: Dare Nigeria | Oct 4, 2008 7:59:14 AM

I agree.

Come on. Palin reads the Economist? Oh really? She doesn't seem TOO knowledgeable on issues that are discussed in the Economist.

I have no idea why she couldn't answer the question when it was Katie Couric posing it. I didn't see anything derogatory Katie was trying to insinuate that she was "out of touch" being kind of isolated in Alaska from the rest of the United States. This is one thing I don't like about her behaviour, she is always so defensive and likes starting culture wars.

Posted by: Grey Matter | Oct 4, 2008 7:49:32 AM

The McCain Campaign knew that her IQ is not too impressive. That was why they went for a debate format that would allow her to avoid questions she considered tough without being called to reckoning on them.

I am sure subsequent interviews will be monitored and controlled by McCain Campaign to save them from further embarrassment.

I wonder which professional Journalist will allow herself to be controlled because she wants to interview Sarah Palin.

They should save us from further embarrassment by withdrawing this Woman from other Press engagements.

People watch her interviews not because they expect her to say something sensible, but to listen to her gaffes and apparent lack of depth.

She is fast becoming a comic relief after a day's job.

Posted by: Dare Nigeria | Oct 4, 2008 7:42:38 AM

Dare Nigeria,

Alaskans don't all love Sarah Palin.

Just go to any video sharing website and search for "Anti-Palin". You'll find lots of videos of rallies of enraged Alaskans carrying very creative signs.

They're fed-up that Mrs "Hold Me Accountable" has gone back on her word and is now trying to stall her ethics investigation.
