Does Obama Still Think Ayers Has Been ‘Rehabilitated’? No, Says His Campaign

October 10, 2008 1:55 PM

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told a radio host yesterday that by the time he found out about William Ayers' background as a member of a violent radical 70s group "The Weather Underground," "I assumed that he had been rehabilitated," since Ayers at that point had become an apparently accepted member of the Chicago academic world.

Ayers was, when Obama met him, "a college professor, teaches education at the University of Illinois, and that's how I met him, was working on a school reform project that was funded by an ambassador and former close friend of Ronald Reagan's and I was sitting on this board along with a whole bunch of conservative businessmen and civic leaders, and he was one of the people who was on this board."

But since 1995 -- when Obama met Ayers -- the founding member of the Weather Underground has gone on to make it clear that he doesn't think he did anything wrong.  And Obama has worked with him (as have plenty of others, including some Republicans) on education issues and such.

And Ayers has made it clear that he is unrepentant.

''I don't regret setting bombs,'' Ayers told the New York Times in 2001. ''I feel we didn't do enough.'' Asked if he would do it all again, Ayers said, ''I don't want to discount the possibility. I don't think you can understand a single thing we did without understanding the violence of the Vietnam War."

In a comic strip that Ayers recently posted on his blog, Ayers tried to explain the "we didn't do enough" quote from seven years ago, writing, "It's impossible to get to be my age and not have plenty of regrets. The one thing I don't regret is opposing the war in Vietnam with every ounce of my being. During the Vietnam War, the Weather Underground took credit for bombing several government installations as a dramatic form of armed propaganda. Action was taken against symbolic targets in order to declare a state of emergency.  But warnings were always called in, and by design, no one was ever hurt.

"When I say, 'We didn't do enough,' a lot of people rush to think, 'That must mean, "We didn't bomb enough s---."' But that's not the point at all. It's not a tactical statement, it's an obvious political and ethical statement. In this context, 'we' means 'everyone.' The war in Vietnam was not only illegal, it was profoundly immoral, millions of people were needlessly killed. Even though I worked hard to end the war, I feel to this day that I didn't do enough because the war dragged on for years after the majority of the American people came to oppose it. I don't think violent resistance is necessarily the answer, but I do think opposition and refusal is imperative."

(He doesn't think violent resistance is NECESSARILY the answer?)

So, today, with today's facts, does Obama think Ayers has been "rehabilitated"?

No, he doesn't think so, a source at the campaign tells me.

Obama spox Bill Burton says of Obama's comment that he thought Ayers had been "rehabilitated": "Sen. Obama was referring to his education work but he, of course, does not believe that work absolves him of the despicable acts that he committed 40 years ago."

This nuance of whether or not Ayers is "sufficiently" rehabilitated is midding the point. It still has nothing to do with Obama.

Obama condemned Ayers' crimes, but was willing to work with him 40 years later to get some good things done. Obama works with a wide assortment of people all the time, whether he thinks they might have done something bad in the past is hardly relevant.

Shamefully, the media has given Obama a free pass. Obama’s associations with shady characters, ex-terrorists, and extreme socialists has been downplayed or totally ignored by the media.

During the primaries you [the media] decided that Obama was going to be the next president. What makes this travesty more outrageous is that television and radio networks using the public’s airways operate under licenses owned by us the citizens.

Who gave you the right to so flagrantly try to influence the outcome of a presidential election?

It is critical that Obama’s background be scrutinized as has been that of all other candidates. To you network executives I say, look closely at all the Wall Street executives; you might be held accountable next.

PINNOCHIO......

This man's nose would be worn out!!

NOW.. we are learning about ACORN?
And, again....more explanations.....no ties said TEAM OBAMA -- what is $800,000?

How many different explanations on Ayers......I reviewed the video of the ABC debate with Hillary over Ayers. Ayers educational ties are with Chavez and that was Obama's explanation today.

Remember how many explanations on Rev Wright? Remember what he said about his grandmother?

Isn't everyone upset because they said Bush was so secretive? AND THIS IS MORE OF THE SAME!!!!!

PLEASE ..
LOOK AT OBAMA'S RECORD. WHAT ELSE IS GOING TO COME UP?

It is too late for the old man and his militia gang to derail the Obama Express. Obama is very honest, very staright forward, very likeable, very sincere and above all real gentleman. He deserves to be OUR PRESIDENT, when Bush-Cheney and McCain have dumped us in to a cesspool. Bush-Cheney must be indicted for their crimes and McCain must be sent to Arizona Desert to enjoy his retirement.

Logan Act violation??? No penalty??? Any Foreign Policy experience or knowledge???

========================================

§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments.

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

1 Stat. 613, January 30, 1799, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 953 (2004).

========================================

It has been alleged that during his July visit to Iraq and during discussions with the Iraqi leadership, Sen. Obama attempted to have negotiations regarding the status of troop withdrawals delayed until there was a new administration in office, either his or Sen. McCain’s. This ostensibly occurred while the Bush Administration was in fact in the process of conducting negotiations in this regard. In the interim, Sen. Obama has offered various explanations, but the basic fact is that IF he did as alleged, he should be charged with a felony under the Logan Act, above. For more information, see TexasDarlin and other blogs, plus the New York Post. Search under ‘Zebari’ and ‘Taheri’, who is the Post columnist who broke the story.

Obama's greatest accomplishment has been to somehow convince voters that McCain (who democrats have loved for 2 decades) is the same as George Bush (who they understood was extremely different when he campaigned against McCain in 2000). Obama supporters have concentrated so much hatred on George Bush that they have not taken a close look at who it is they are supporting. They have not demanded the details of what Obama has done for even the last 10 years.

The accepted answer to the Ayers question in the primary was that Ayers was some guy that lived in Obama's neighborhood and quit asking these "guilt by association" questions!

But Obama has an extremely limited history. By all means don't remove his honest associations! In the absence of all associations, he has only his ability to campaign. And in the words of his former pastor, "Obama says what he says because he is a politician".

Obama may actually benefit by having so many questionable associations. Many voters will accept his defense against any one of them and not understand how deep-rooted the others are. They may not consider that even if you believe he is not corrupt, his inability to identify corruption is a dangerous trait for a President. They may not realize that this is what they hated most about George Bush.

Nobody has suggested that Obama is "guilty" of what Ayers has done. The evidence suggests that they hold similar views. Had the public records that were finally released last week regarding his association with Ayers been available during the primary, he certainly would have lost to Hillary.

The money did not go to schools. It went to what Ayer's referred to as radical education reform. So the question is, do you believe that Ayers selected someone with similar radical views to hand out this money?

Obama's Other trye friens!
This is a story we’ve largely missed. While Obama’s Acorn connection has not gone entirely unreported, its depth, extent, and significance have been poorly understood. Typically, media background pieces note that, on behalf of Acorn, Obama and a team of Chicago attorneys won a 1995 suit forcing the state of Illinois to implement the federal “motor-voter” bill. In fact, Obama’s Acorn connection is far more extensive. In the few stories where Obama’s role as an Acorn “leadership trainer” is noted, or his seats on the boards of foundations that may have supported Acorn are discussed, there is little follow-up. Even these more extensive reports miss many aspects of Obama’s ties to Acorn.

where does race come into this?

The only ones who keep bringing it up are Obama supporters.....

Is this the only platform Obama has to fall back/ off of?

Isn't he "everyman" BI racial?

Why does it become a matter of race when someone shows up HIS warts and scars......?

Methinks Obama and his followers... protest too much!

One day we will all look back at this election season and be ashamed. In case you ever wondered, this is what racism looks like. It is the journalists assisting McCain in slandering a candidate because of his race. When was the last time that a candidate with Obama's credentials was said to be unqualified to be president? The columns that perpetuate lies are plentiful. The writers pretend that they are informing the people, because that lets them sleep at night.

I don't recall reading that Palin released her own Troopergate report exonerating herself. That is ludicrous enough to discuss, don't you think. Where is the public outrage at the race baiting at McCain's rallys? Why won't the networks call him on it? Why do they continue to smear Obama (Ayers) when they know the truth? Where is the integrity in journalism? Where are the real journalists? I think we should boycott all sites that do not treat both candidates equally. Not to do so is to condone the behavior. To paraphrase the adage, we must stand for something or we will fall for anything.

Posted by: Ihjt | Oct 10, 2008 5:32:59 PM

Obama was the impetus in back of troopergate; he sent his spies to search out all warts and scars embodied by a woman who came to the national political arena with an 80per cent approval rating from her state!

Well, that sounded like too much competition for the other newbie in town, B O, so he decided to send his goons up to Alaska and treat her like he's treated each and every other one of his competitors.

Just never forget that Obama is the slickest of Chicago politicians... taught at the knee of an expert, Emil Jones, and fostered by the king of advertising, Herbert Axelrod!

Old slick-um.... can certainly pick=um...

But I'll pass... or maybe write in "axelrod" as a candidate!

Obama waits until all the dirt is in before he flings HIS friends... Jeremiah, his white grandmother, Pfleger, into the crocodile pond....

WHOOOOPS!

There goes Ayers!

Who's next?

The race card again.

By the way, I don't think the slam on universities has to do with the sciences, Professor. It's the humanities. Look at Duke.

Obviously that should have been Marxism and not Maxism. Another typo.

Look at the education reform Obama and Ayers supported with $$ through Annenberg. Folks, it wasn't reading and writing!!!

Posted by: Marie | Oct 10, 2008 4:57:02 PM

"I think that when people support you, it doesn't mean that you support everything they say. Obviously, those words and those statements are statements that none of us would associate ourselves with, and I don't believe that Senator Obama would support any of those, as well."

-- John McCain, in reference to the Jeremiah Wright controversy

As someone else pointed out, the statute of limitations may not have run out on crimes Ayers has committed. He may still be on the lam.

"You are known by the company you keep."

McCain sat on the board of a group that traded arms with Iran and financed right wing death squads in Nicaragua
