Former Hillary (Now McCain) Supporters Say New Obama Ad Featuring Palin Winking Is Sexist

October 29, 2008 8:10 PM

They don't like the new Obama ad, these women.

Feminist quotes courtesy of the McCain campaign.

Shelly Mandell, president of Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women: "I am outraged by the new ad put out by Barack Obama. It is sexist and demeaning to women. These tactics started with Hillary Clinton and continue, growing even more disgusting with Gov. Palin. I was a Hillstar for Hillary and an avid supporter. Trashing two women clearly in a sexist manner in one election is an outrage and must be identified and stopped. There must be consequences. Let female Obama supporters take a good look at this and still believe their candidate supports women's rights and women's dignity."

Prameela Bartholomeusz, DNC Platform Committee Member: "I am once again stunned at the personal and sexist attacks by the Obama campaign against Gov. Palin. This latest ad is sexist and offensive. The Gov. of Alaska has been managing and balancing a budget of $10 billion; I think she knows a bit about economics. Sen. Obama never spoke up against sexism during the primary season, and is not speaking out against misogyny during this phase of the election season -- he is contributing to it. I have no confidence that Sen. Obama will fight for women's issues if elected. This sets women back decades."

Stephanie Bressler, Ph.D, Hillary Clinton supporter, University of Scranton women and politics professor: "It's a sexist example of reducing a woman to an object - a wink - and denying her a voice. Her lips are actually moving, but she's not allowed to be heard."

Amy Siskind, ambassador for Hillary: "When Senator Hillary Clinton was demeaned and degraded during the Presidential Primary, many of us of, myself included, vowed 'never again'. The treatment of Governor Palin by both the main stream media, and now the Obama Campaign, shows that the misogyny fest is alive and well in our country. There has been a complete and utter smear job of our fellow citizen, Sarah Palin, who is only trying to serve her country."

She winked at the camera and American people not just during the debate but at most public events. She is the only one denigrating the status of woman. This time around people were smarter and she got what she deserved -- sacked back to Alaska. People like her have no place in national stage.

Hey guys, just heard on Money News, you can forget your tax credit with BO. Stocks are down and it's not getting better. Maybe all those people/countries with secret donations to the BO campagin will pitch in to pay your gas and house payment.

All of you who are talking about how badly McCain treated his first wife, how about how Bill Clinton treated his first wife? Not to mention it made national news for weeks. The majority of the Democrats gave Bill a pass, as well as Hillary did. Hillary stayed with the big creep hoping he would help her break through the glass ceiling. She lost again, sorry to say.

One of the big differences between Hillary and Sara, Sara is a self made woman, not depending on her husband or anyone else to help her get too the top. She will run again, so get out of her way.

Brad, you have McCain's dating record precisely correct. Don't you find it interesting, Brad, that all we know or see concerning Obama's romantic relationships with women is Michelle? Aren't you even the slight bit curious as to what kind of relationship he had before Michelle? Why is it that no one knows any of his past girlfriends? What is the media hiding for him this time?

SoetoroObama and the liberal, biased media are sexist. The nasty comments are always directed at Sarah. Maybe they should pick on the nutbag Biden. When he was in Oakville Mo he tried to get a man to stand up that was in a wheel chair. LOL. I guess he really thinks that Obama and he have the power to make crippled people walk as well as other things. Obamas lipstick on a pig and old fish comment was disgusting. I was a Hillary supporter now I am for McCain and Palin.

This is absurd. You are blaming Obama for pointing out what the Republicans (off the record) have been saying...that she is ill-prepared??!!! That she is not intellectually curious!!!

And McCain treats women with respect? Like cheating on and dumping his first wife because she had some health problems...like calling his current wife an obscenity that most of us never hear or utter(I am not talking about the "f" word here, but the "c" word). Like his absolute lack of any affection with current wife and complete awkwardness. Like his historical record of "sleeping around" in his younger days. Wow, what a respecter of women this guy is.

And compare that to Obama who, by all reports and everything we have seen, seems to have a very caring and affectionate relationship with his wife.

Who is the better role model for people?

And what exactly was being implied by the ad? You hypersensitive people see everything as mysoginistic. Give me a break. BO's point was that on such a serious topic as the economy, in an area that McCain admits he is weak and said his VP needed the expertise, in this critical area given what is happening in the markets, he selects someone who is in completely over her head...who is so over her head that they can't even let her take one-on-one interviews with the media because they are convinced she will fail. If you should be mad at anyone it should be McCain for handling her this way because HE is the one who thinks she is an not very capable. McCain is the one who has kept her bottled up. But of course that is Obama's fault. Right...

All BO is doing is playing an ad off the conversation that the Republicans themselves have established.

Really, both her and McCain's lack of intellectual curiousity are the real scary thing here. They both shoot from the hip with not real detail or depth on an issue. They both are ill prepared for the White House. And anyone who feels that Palin is an appropriate VP candidate is either the typical self-loathing Democrat, or a closet Republican. Anyone who is honest (as many Repubs have already done) will admit she is way over her head...and seems like an ideologue not interested in exploring ideas. I find it hard to believe any Hillary supporter could support her.

What if there was an ad showing Michelle and Barack Obama pounding fists (which they did)? Would that be consider racist? OF COURESE!!!! It is a fact that Palin wink and yes I was turned off by that but it doesn't make it right for Obama's campaign to use it as an attack. I think it would be easy to put an ad together showing the Obama's pounding fists in a derogatory way.

Sarah Palin is the real sexist here. How disturbing that the first time a woman is on the ticket for the Republican party and she winks at her audience! This is not the way for a statesperson to carry on. How can we as women be taken seriously when the most hailed success in the Republican party winks at her audience?

Posted by: hockeymama | Oct 31, 2008 9:03:05 PM

Of course this is a sexist ad. The ad quotes McCain stating that he would pick a VP who could help him with economic issues then shows his VP choice winking. The implication is that Palin is someone who obviously, since she is winking, does not know about the economy. Imagine a wink from Biden in this same context. You would see that to mean that the man, who does know about the economy, is conveying to the audience a message about his competence -- wink -- I know even more than I'm saying. It's not necessary even to hear my words to know that I'm knowledgeable. The woman winking looks flirtatious. We are expected to deduce that of course this attractive woman, winking, is not knowledgeable about the economy, can't be, since she's just an attractive and sexy woman. The whole ad rests on a sexist interpretation of Palin. That she is, indeed, a h knowledgeable and accomplished state governor, used to dealing with economic issues and does, in fact, contribute this knowledge to the ticket is rendered invisible ONLY because of the sexism with with we are expected to view her.

Mandell obviously has no clue what real sexism means. I'm glad she doesn't represent my local chapter of NOW. Stay in lala land Shelly, it's where you belong.

can someone PLEASE explain to me how and why this ad is sexist? does shelly mandell and everyone agreeing with her even know what sexism is? i'm not so sure. it's clear we have a lot of confused people out there. vote obama-biden while you have the chance.

Posted by: s | Oct 30, 2008 10:33:56 PM

how in the world is this sexism??? i think it is ignorant and ridiculous to claim that it is. Is it because she winked or is it because she is a female...well, here's a newsflash for you all...she DID wink, and she IS a female, and she is who MCCAIN chose...there is no sexism involved. pull up your big girl panties and get over it and focus on some real issues!!!

I see obamabots here. you are getting easier and easier to spot - you have no real argument.

Obama is a sexist - he demeans women and does not even provide equal pay on his own staff

Posted by: Marilyn | Oct 30, 2008 8:36:23 PM

Please, those "women" are the most pathetic shills for McStain - the whole Rebub campaign is like taking a page out of a Soviet Cold War disinformation campaign - say a lie long enough and some people will think it's true. How is showing an unaltered photo of Apalling - oops, Palin, - wink considered sexist? Why wasn't it sexist when she did it herself?

Posted by: Jeff R. | Oct 30, 2008 8:23:56 PM

Sarah winked. It was stupid. She winked. If she'd hiked her skirt up it wouldn't have been any worse. She winked. It was beyond stupid.

Posted by: sus | Oct 30, 2008 7:44:50 PM

Was it sexist of Palin to think that she could wink her way through a serious matter like the Vice Presidential debates during these serious times in our country? Funny she didn't do any of that during any of her debates in Alaska. You betcha! I wonder why Palin behaved that way...

Unlike these fake female Democrats, many of us women think with more than just our anatomy about who should get our votes. We think about the issues that the people stand for.

Palin is a disgrace to the type of respect women have been trying to gain for the last how many years?

I am also a former Hillary supporter and large Hillary donor who is now supporting John McCain for President.

And I too have noted the sexist tendencies of Senator from Chicago--beginning with the primary election, from Obama's serial 'sweetie’ problems, to referring to Hillary's menstrual period, to Obama's approving references to the Jay-Z lyrics to "99 Problems".

Unfortunately, our Democratic women's groups were too ideologically hamstrung to speak out.

Stephanie Bressler, Ph.D, Hillary Clinton supporter, University of Scranton women and politics professor

University of Scranton? Women and politics professor? Is that really a legitimate degree field? I mean, what was her dissertation - the politics of 'The View'?

About as much of a joke as Palin's candidacy!

Posted by: Carmen D. | Oct 30, 2008 6:19:26 PM

How is it sexist to show her doing exactly what she did? Barack Obama didn't make up the wink. She winked several times because she thought it was charming and folksy. Well, it's not. Any woman should be outraged that Sarah Palin thought she could wink her way into vice president. A woman that winked in a board room would be recognized for what she is - using sex appeal in the place of talent and innovation. That's what Sarah Palin is. Sex appeal and no substance.
