Obama's advantages: (1) Americans' psychological status of condemning Bush automatically becomes Obama's profit regardless of his real quality. (2) McCain's longer career has already been mostly recognized, so nothing "SEEMS" to be hidden as unknown potential. (3) Obama's very little career works as his advantage as with the depressed human psychology under the current econimic condition, people tend to look for "ANYTHING NEW" good or bad; and people unconsciously expect "good" on Obama with the psychology of running away from the current situation.

The bailout is another example of how we're in step 7.

"About the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:
"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship." (emphasis mine - he continues...)

"The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these
nations always progressed through the following sequence
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage "

The people did not want the bail out.

Seems our public officals did one over on us.

The Democrats are really Dumb, Using this to pay off their friends who helped with them doing a job on the country and the people.

The Democrats thought making the people and the country desperate they could win an election.

Why did they not just run like normals.

Of course they will try to use their favorite scape goat a lame duck president. It should not float this time.

They said they would take this election at all costs, The Cost just risen above the limit.

We can not afford for the democrats to take over our government, with their plans of continueing the nationalzation and socialization we will not have a country left.

hopefully Americans will wake up before the holocust they plan.

wall st,
I'm certainly not an economist, but let's consider the situation in Zimbabwe for reference. They had, at one time, a thriving economy. A greedy and corrupt government printed money and dumped it into the system. They now have hyperinflation. This is overly simplistic but there are similarities to our bailout. Many very bright people share my view.

Jake - how about giving a comment on the following.
Democrats and Freddie Mae’s management argued there is NOTHING wrong! Outcome: disaster strikes and America has a huge bailout and Freddie Mae is no more. The DNC and Barack Obama is being sued because he will NOT share his birth certificate with the courts. He had a few private people look at it and say it is official. Maybe I should notify the lottery board that I have a winning ticket and I’ve had a few private citizens look at my ticket and it is genuine, so I do not need to show the lottery ticket to officials---pay me. So elect Obama not knowing if he is breaking the US Constitution. Is America important? Is our Constitution worth fighting for any more? What is wrong with knowing? The DNC and Obama’s hired lawyers (he is paying them money!) not submit the original birth certificate to the courts to examine to end the controversy. Barack Obama needs to come forth with certified copies of these documents and the case will immediately be dismissed. Yes, the “media” is quiet on this issue but America will spread the word. There are still enough Americans that respect the Constitution and the “freedoms” that our people have fought for.

Jake!

Do a blog post on the news that McCain has shifted his advertising budget to 100% negative attack ads.

This is a really bad sign for McCain, whose once golden credibility is quickly looking more like tarnished, hollow tin, with peeling gold paint.

Obama has won my vote already, but I it has truly been tragic to see what kind of negative, comical campaign McCain has chosen to run in the past weeks. Needless to say, I am totally floored that the guy is going to go all in on character attacks.

Deep down, even McCain knows, that's not gonna help us pay the bills or fix our problems... to run the sort of scorched earth, napalm from the skies campaigns that he advocates overseas on the minds and hearts of his fellow citizens!

I feel sorry for you.
If you don't like obama, ok, that is your taste.
But, if you are ardent hillary supporters, how can you support Mac/Palin ticket?

Barracude,

It is the McCain camp that is insulting Palin by treating her like a piece of furniture. She was just on Fox telling the world that she heard about the campaign's decision to pull out of Michigan from the press. Is McCain going to consult with her? Apparently, not so much.

Concerned in OH -
A madrassa is a jihadist training school. Faux News reported months ago that Obama attended an Indonesian madrassa as a child. He did not. Why repeat thoroughly discredited slime as if it's a facts?

Barracuda -
Consider the possibility that reactions to Palin have less to do with her gender than her inability to put together a complete sentence, know what she's talking about, or tell the truth. Putting Palin in the same sentence with Hillary Clinton insults Clinton.

306 million x 1 million = 306 trillion!

it isn't that easy. This is 2000 odd dollars per citizen, not millions

Posted by: Gianluca | Oct 4, 2008 4:09:16 AM

There are about 306 million people in the USA- If congress gave each of us 1 million dollars a piece- this bailout could of been reduced in half. The homeless could buy those unwanted houses from the banks, the banks would be flooded with money with investers and the economy would have been build from the bottom up!

Posted by: Linda, USA | Oct 4, 2008 3:39:30 AM

The drama never ends in Congress.

Remember to VOTE NO on Prop 8 in California, VOTE NO on Prop 2 in Florida, and VOTE NO on Prop 102 in Arizona. It matters.

"My eyes have certainly been opened by following this blog about the mysogyny that is so rampant in our society. And I’ve been disappointed lately by so many women who represent women’s rights (NOW, NARAL) and women in power positions dumping all manner of foul abuse on Hillary and now Palin. But I agree that it’s primarily the Old Boys Club mentality, that carries an extreme amount of fear of women in power, that is still so strong. Of course, Barack Obama and his army seem to carry little regard for the real intelligence and insight of women. They don’t even try to hide their distaste."

The US is over. Our nation is broke finacially and morally, and any pretense of this being a democracy or free-market-based country is now impossible. Hopefully, someday, the average American voter will be able to pick up the big black pencil and connect the dots back to an unnecessary and unjustifiable attack on Iraq and years of idiocy and mismanagement by lected and appointed officials.

Jake

Is anyone going to tell the story of the Obama and Odinga scandal or do we find out after the election?

Posted by: Jackie | Oct 4, 2008 1:20:36 AM

Rose,

Do you have a job? Do you want to keep it or would you rather a pink slip for the holidays? Do you potentially need an auto loan in the next few years? Will you need to finance a kid's college education? Do you buy groceries from a store that stocks inventory?

A failing economy and a standstill of credit will cripple even those with little or negative net worth. If those close to retirement can no longer retire, they will keep working which means more people will be competing for fewer jobs.

You can hate the principle of the bailout, but as unpalatable as it is, something needs to be tried, and hopefully this really is our best solution. Time will tell. Looking back and finger pointing does not solve the problem or make it go away. Decisive, though painful action had to be taken and ALL Americans need to now push for the reforms that keep "greed" at all levels (wall street, lenders, individuals) in check from this day forward.

Sarah Palin knows the difference between a moose and a bailout!

The world is full of surprises.

Posted by: long tall sally | Oct 3, 2008 11:51:04 PM

For those of us who have little or even negative net worth, the bailout has little meaning. We live from pay check to pay check. The Democrats in Congress know this, but pushed through the bailout anyway. There will be no benefit to the poor or even the middle class. It just gives the wealthy a little time to move their assets to safer havens.

Posted by: rose | Oct 3, 2008 11:48:36 PM

Sarah Palin say she reads the same news as everybody else. The hunting news, the fishing news , and the moose news.

Posted by: Sandy | Oct 3, 2008 11:43:07 PM

The bailout was needed to escape a deep depression. The Bush administration did a poor job explaining what a depression means for Joe Sixpack...

Posted by: CLabs | Oct 3, 2008 10:53:44 PM

Some say another drama ended well, with a "solid" performance. But here is the heart and soul of contemporary conservatism in America:

“Ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh — it’s got to be all about job creation too. Shoring up our economy, and putting it back on the right track. So healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade, we’ve got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, um, scary thing, but 1 in 5 jobs being created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.”

Sarah Palin is a black dress full of BS.

Posted by: gregger | Oct 3, 2008 10:52:37 PM

And may I add...

1 - The moment the bill was passed, the stock market dropped hundreds of points. The charade was over.

2- Both presidential candidates supported the Porkout bill. While I prefer one candidate over the other, I have lost respect for both.

Posted by: clifton | Oct 3, 2008 10:48:47 PM

Whether you are for Obama or McCain, visit the House website (house.gov) and look over this "bailout" bill.

You will see that Title I talks about purchasing bad assets.

The remaining 400 pages of the bill are loaded with Pure Pork. This bill has NOTHING to do with bailing out the economy. This bill is a gang-rape of the American public, enacted by wild dogs of both parties who have lied to us through their teeth about the purpose of the bill.

Today's rape of America by our Congress transcends our political affiliations. History was made today with 70% of congress voting to approve a bill that was opposed by 80% of Americans.

Posted by: clifton | Oct 3, 2008 10:38:22 PM

And don't forget to tune in next week for yet another gut-wrenching episode of "As the Economy Sours, the Stomach Turns" (with profound apologies to Carol Burnett).

Posted by: chuck | Oct 3, 2008 10:35:09 PM

As far as the the financial mess we are in there is enough blame to go around.There was plenty of looking the other way even when it became evident that our economy was failing.When you have stores as early as last year closing, then people started losing their homes jobs,and now record unemployment these are signs that the average American could see.It is time that all step up to the plate and take responsibility for their actions.There needs to be more accountability transparency and not as much freedom for anyone responsible for managing our finances.That means an real and true oversight panel.While we look back it should only be to see what was done wrong which was plenty to make good of the promises and move forward stop the free for all.We are giving 192,000 for rum that should have been used for something that does not cause another illness to try and cure what sense does it make to go after tobacco and give to liquor it is mind boggling where the values are with some that pass these bills.Hopefully one day they will realize that this is what our children and grandchildren will be paying for and stop the nonsense.

"Joe Biden called John McCain a good man many times last night because of his guilty consciensce about lying "

Joe Biden said John McCain was dead wrong on the issues...

Posted by: CLabs | Oct 3, 2008 10:25:05 PM

Many home loans were made at reasonable rates to the poor against the equity in their primary residence. These were not bad people and may warrant assistance. Others, trying to get rich quick, thought to use OPM, as the gurus call it, to make their fortune in real estate. These people are less deserving, but their ignorance doesn't rise to the level of criminal misconduct. Fraudulent loans made to unqualified applicants are criminal and there will be a paper trail back to their originators. The CJS is going to be very busy.

Deregulation caused the problems...
Wallstreet came up with new financial constructs (what they self call "innovative") to make more money.
Easy money is being made. As every hype, it's a bubble waiting to bust.

Read some books on this matter, I did and it's quite shocking how the system worked.

I like the old Joe Bidden better. The old Joe Bidden wouldn't lie to us when he talks about Obama miniscule qualifications. The old Joe Bidden wouldn't even blink when he said Obama is political and reckless for not funding our troups during time of war.

Biden said, "Look, all you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington or go to Katie’s Restaurant or walk into Home Depot with me where I spend a lot of time and you ask anybody in there whether or not the economic and foreign policy of this administration has made them better off in the last eight years."

The fact is Katie's closed 15 years ago and please go ahead and ask any Home Depot near Joe Biden's home when the last time they saw him in there, ever.

Talk radio host Curtis Sliwa of WABC dug that information up. He also got puzzled reactions from Wilmington Home Depots asking if anyone had ever sighted Biden.

Biden: "There have been 7,000 madrasses built along that border. We should be helping them build schools to compete for those hearts and minds of the people in the region so that we're actually able to take on terrorism and by the way, that's where bin Laden lives and we will go at him if we have actionable intelligence."

Wait just one second. Last I checked a madrassa IS A SCHOOL and even 0bama attended one.

This is the Dem's Foreign Policy Expert? Seriously? This guy is a total buffoon.

I hope the Fannie and Freddie execs and their Congressional enablers get the same treatment the Enron and Tyco execs got.

Posted by: Concerned in OH | Oct 3, 2008 9:03:02 PM

Fannie and Freddie played a significant role in the explosion of subprime mortgages and subprime mortgage-backed securities. Without Fannie and Freddie’s implicit guarantee of government support (which turned out to be all too real), would the mortgage-backed securities market and the subprime part of it have expanded the way they did? Perhaps. But before we conclude that markets failed, we need a careful analysis of public policy’s role in creating this mess. Greedy investors obviously played a part, but investors have always been greedy, and some inevitably overreach and destroy themselves. Why did they take so many down with them this time? Part of the answer is a political class greedy to push home-ownership rates to historic highs — from 64% in 1994 to 69% in 2004. This was mostly the result of loans to low-income, higher-risk borrowers. Both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, abetted by Congress, trumpeted that rise as it occurred. The consequence? On top of putting the entire financial system at risk, the hidden cost has been hundreds of billions of dollars funneled into the housing market instead of more productive assets.
