In Working-Class Ohio, Obama Meets Amorous Dogs, Skeptical Plumber

October 12, 2008 5:58 PM

OREGON, OHIO -- On Shrewsbury Street in the working-class Lincoln Green section of Holland, Ohio, Sunday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., knocked on some doors to chat with voters in this battleground state where polls have him and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., neck and neck.

Sue Sekel, a 43-year old health care worker wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt with the words "Las Vegas" written in a Tommy Hilfiger-like pattern, told Obama she'd voted early.

She also said Sunday was “the one day I come home to clean ceiling fans and look like crap, and then this happens.”

Clutching cameras, three teenage girls raced to him from across the street, with no shoes on.

“Where are your shoes?” Obama asked them.

He took photos with them, and others, shaking hands, talking about the economy.

The mother of one of the girls, Shelly Kretz, stood on the periphery of the group while snapshots were being taken.

“Mom, you look good. C’mon,” Obama said to her.

Kretz, a 38-year-old employee of Proctor & Gamble, reluctantly joined the group for a photo. Later, she told reporters that she'd been on the fence, but she liked Obama's answers to her neighbors' questions.

“It’s really awesome that he takes the time to talk to the middle class and answer questions,” she said. Kretz said her brothers were also there, and had also been converted by Obama’s appearance this afternoon.

Obama approached another house but was warned by one neighbor about two amorous dogs.

“Oh, is that right?" Obama asked. "So I don’t want to get too close, huh? They might start, they might start."

The dogs began canoodling with one another.

"Yeah, they seem like they enjoy themselves," Obama said. He then told the dogs, "Alright, don’t do anything in front of the cameras that would be inappropriate."

He reached down to pet them, scratching a small black dog behind its ears.

“Do you believe in the American dream?” a local plumber asked.

Obama said he did.

"I'm being taxed more and more for fulfilling the American dream,” the man said, in comments interpreted by reporters as a reference to the Democrat's proposal to increase income taxes on those making $200,000 or more a year.

Obama recited his now-familiar talking points about 95 percent of the American people would get a tax cut under his plan.

The plumber did not seem convinced.

As Obama left the man, he said, "I've got to go prepare for this debate, but that was pretty good practice."

"My attitude is that if the economy's good for folks from the bottom up, it's gonna be good for everybody ... I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody." So here's the plan: we give a bunch of someone else's money to a bunch of people who don't pay taxes. Then they go around and find a plumbing contractor who is motivated enough to train them and then to find work for them and continue to keep them employed, when the money-gifts run out. Is this trickle up economics? Only if you're standing on your head.

I like how if you make under $250,000 a year, you're a hardworking American citizen. If you make over $250,000 a year you're greedy, don't work hard, and don't deserve what you make... and your wealth should be "spread around" (the quote was conveniently left out of this article...)

Nearly half of those 95% don't even pay taxes so are they just going to get a check?

Talk about Republicans not wanting to believe what they hear- what a joke- take some of your own advice and look up Obama's tax voting record- it's not hard to find and if you stop believing what you want and start believing what's factual, you'll see that his record does not support what he is saying. I can't believe how many people want to be blindly led in this country.

"hilarious. so many people who are worried about obama "spreading the wealth." yet, when tax dollars are proposed to be used by Republicans to transfer wealth from the middle-class to the rich, no problem. when tax dollars are used to bail out banks, no problem. when tax breaks are given to companies for shipping jobs overseas, no problem. keep screaming "socialism," guys. if that's your message, Obama's going to get 400 electoral votes."

So true, so true. Economics and Americans just don't mix.

1. How do you lower taxes on people who don't pay taxes? 2. If Obama is so concerned with working people, why is he in favor of eliminating the secret ballot in the workplace decision of whether or not to be represented by a union? 3. Anyone under the illusion that Biden is a. intelligent and b. non-partisan is a. unable to distinguish between smooth and correct and b. unaware of how he has publically sandbagged numerous candidates including Justice Thomas.

Most of you people wouldn't understand the true notion of Marxist socialism if it slapped you in the face. You've heard conservative leaders banter it around and adopt the term as if it's a concrete explanation of Democratic policies.

Thank God I'm an Independent, because anyone that understands true socialism will quickly realize that a complete breakdown of social classes as true socialism would require, won't can can't co-exist in a capitalistic/free market society. Most of you won't pay additional taxes, considering 95 percent of us don't make more than $250,000 per year.

It's odd how all of these comments from hard-working Americans fail to mention that a tax increase is directly related to letting the Bush tax cuts lapse, which only applies to people making 250,000 or more per year. So this notion that a redistribution of wealth will affect people working two jobs to make ends meet is absolutely false. Educate yourselves on the tax plans; don't listen to the media sound bytes.

Come on GMA! You guys completely left out Obama's comments on "spreading the wealth around" when he was talking to that plumber in Toledo. When I saw the story playing I thought, "finally some coverage from the networks on how Obama really thinks!" You glossed right over it! You actually played it to make it sound positive for Obama!! I couldn't believemy ears!!

You forgot something. Here is the most news worthy portion of the exchange that you won't get from the media elite.

"It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've got a chance for success too," Obama responded. "My attitude is that if the economy's good for folks from the bottom up, it's gonna be good for everybody ... I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

To get my husband through college he worked 20 to 30 hours a week, I worked a lot of overtime and, at one point, two jobs, and we did without many things that folks take for granted. Now he works 50+ hours a week and frequently brings work home. To "spread the wealth" Obama proposes to take some of what we pay in taxes and out right give it in the form of a refundable tax credit to people who may not work as hard or make the sacrifices we have made. That is redistribution of wealth, otherwise known as socialism.

Why doesn't ABC want people to know the truth about Obama's Marxist beliefs - the line right after this where says he wants to "spread the wealth around"?

Quoting the "skeptical plumber" is ABC's phony version of "balanced" journalism. Omitting Obama's too-honest answer is ABC's way of hiding his socialist agenda.

I don't believe how the Repubs hear what they want to hear. Obama said his plan will give tax breaks to 95% of ~~~taxpayers~~~!!! That means that 95% of those people that pay taxes get the credit.

Reading the various comments and an avid Obama/Biden supporter. The plumber might not realize it yet. But he will benefit in the long run and his business should prosper even more and provide much needed service. Here is how. His business grows because the middle class can afford to pay for his services. He hires a few more employees (Obama tax credit). Can you see the economic connection. It troubles me that people cannot or refuse to connect the dots. It is about inclusion not exclusion. Reading some of the other comments. On this blog. Obama and Ayers, He was invited to his home by other community leaders. He was invited to join by prominent right wing folk to lead their efforts. However, Ayers continues to be singled out. Interesting they thought enough to put them both on the board. Wright, I go to church to fellowship with others, praise God, and learn his word. It is also a vital conduit into the community to serve others. That does not mean I support everything my pastor voices in the pulpit. Because I am my own man and need to answer to God for my own sins and transgressions. Interesting why do we continue to condemn his thinking. Obama's contact and work with Acorn was 12-13 years ago. Yes, his campaign did donate money for voter outreach programs during the primary. However, what I come to learn is that on all levels of society people prey on each other. In this case people ignorant of the law, or hustling for a fix taking advantage of their brother or sister. You cannot blame Obama for their poor judgement. Esecially when the contribution was made in good faith.

oh wow, my comment was removed with the video of the 'spread the ealth' comment. Why doesnt that surprise me?

I have a name for everyone to think about. "Hugo Chavez!" Venezuela was a democratic country until someone named Chavez ran for president and promised "change". I don't want to live in a welfare society. I work hard for my money and don't fell like dividing it up with those that sit on their lazy butts all day and listen liberal media while I work all day.

Obama is NOT for change.

He's for the big bucks.

To Dave and all the other self righteous do-gooders out there...those who earn over $200K a year most likely seldom watch TV, pretty much confine going out to the weekends and even clock quite a few weekend hours. And at the same time pay more in taxes than some earn. Oh there's a concept: EARN!
So if those in that bracket have more toys, more savings for their families, and an extra vacation or two...it is because they EARNED it! If those being given the tax rebates worked as hard as those EARNING their money, I would have no problem handing it over. But all I see are people waiting for a handout with no intention of WORKING for it.

"When he says that 95% of Americans will get tax cuts..33% of Americans don't even pay taxes. Is this the kind of leader that you want?"

Dude.. He's been taking math lessons from Al Gore!!!!!

Income redistribution!! Get prepared for the Constitution to be pushed aside and have the USA become the USSA - United Socialist States of America. Oh, yes. When he says that 95% of Americans will get tax cuts..33% of Americans don't even pay taxes. Is this the kind of leader that you want?

"People needs to stop whining about paying more taxes. I'm single, no house, no kids, no deductions and make six figures. I probably pay a higher tax rate than most people. Paying taxes is your duty--it buys civilization. You guys just want to cut taxes, put it on the tab, and have your children and grandchildren pay for it. There's the American Dream for ya."

No responsibilities and nobody to look out for except yourself. You just keep you head firmly planted in your rear and your mouth shut.

Thanks
