Joe McCain Makes Bad Joke
October 05, 2008 12:30 PM
It's fairly common for Virginia Republicans to jokingly refer to the Northern-most part of their commonwealth, the liberal enclaves surrounding Washington, D.C., as "the People's Republic of Alexandria," and such.
It's fairly uncommon, however, for a presidential candidate's brother to say it into microphones at a campaign rally a month before an election.
Last night, Joe McCain, the schticky brother of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., referred to two Democratic-leaning areas in Northern Virginia as "communist country," The Washington Post reports.
"I've lived here for at least 10 years and before that about every third duty I was in either Arlington or Alexandria, up in communist country," Navy veteran Joe McCain said in Loudoun County, Va., at a campaign event Saturday night.
Joe apologized, and a McCain spokeswoman said that this was merely an "unsuccessful attempt at humor," but perhaps the damage has been done.
In this last month, every little thing will be pounced upon by both campaigns, fairly or unfairly, for any little edge.
In the battleground state of Virginia, residents of these Northern enclaves should not be shocked to soon see fliers or hear radio ads talking about how "J McCain" called Northern Virginians "Communists."
McCain himself, back when he liked the media (and vice versa), used to jokingly call his traveling press corps "Bolsheviks, Trotskyites" and such. But that was a long time ago.

I think it's funny that our nation's heros would be laid to rest in "communist country." They should just change the name to "Communist National Cemetery." Robert E. Lee's boyhood home is in Alexandria and George Washington lived and died there. WAY TO GO JOE!

If Democrats are communists does that make Republicans fascists? Or are they anarchists, since they think government is always the problem?
If ignorance is bliss than Joe McCain and the Sarah Palin Republicans must be more blissed out than the Guru Maharaji!

Like a lot of my friends, we are all transplants from around the country. Northern Virginia may not be "Real Virginia" but it is "Real America." I have friends from all fifty states here, and after 13 years in "Alexandria", I bring the best of midwestern values to my community -- not Communism. For the downstate Republicans that are fed up with us -- fine. We'll stop sending our tax dollars to you through Richmond. Lord knows you aren't helping us with our problems up here (e.g., traffic, etc.).

A thoughtful choice on who to vote for includes a careful look at which candidates spend more time on a unifying vision and which candidates spend more time on divisive name calling.

What a ridiculous comment to make. I know people who live out of state that are Democrats and refer to the way things are run in No. Virginia as the Peoples Republic of Northern Virginia.
Joe should have called it that instead of 'Communist Country' which was a poor choice of words.

Find out who the real McCain is and how he almost destroyed the economy in the 80's .. no he is trying to do it again.

Comments like these show just how out of touch Americans are about John McCain. True, John McCain is not the same John McCain that entered the Congress in 1983. In the 80s, Reagan lowered taxes across the board (the top tier was around 70%) and cut corporate taxes as well as regulations that were killing America. What happened? We endured the greatest economic expansion in our history at that time. Get the facts before you post.

Joe McCain's "bad joke" reveals a genuine attitude, and was the harbinger of a new wave of nastiness in the McCain campaign. Cindy McCain has now begun to reveal her own brand of nastiness and prevarication. But more importantly, Sarah Palin and John McCain have lost all moral authority and moral compass. They are close to inciting riots (and there are indeed laws against that) at their campaign rallies, where they clearly succeed in only one thing--character assasination and lying that leads their die-hard extremist fans to conclude that a respected U.S. Senator is a terrorist. Shouts are heard at these rallies that suggest lynch mobs and mob rule--"Kill him!" their crowd shouts, and "Terrorist!"
Shame on you, Sarah, shame on you, John. There is a special circle of hell reserved for those gulty of calumny and slander. Your candidacies have lost all credibility and relevance, and you have become dangerous terrorists yourselves.

Voted No on the GI BILL 6/2008 -Voted No Funding for Special Education Amendment, Voted No To increase Pell Grant, Voted No on Native American Funding Amendment.
Voted No Student Lender and Student Grants
Voted NO Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
Voted NO Hate Crimes Amendment

Bill Passed, even Alabama's Shelby & Sessions voted yes on this farm bill!!! Vote to pass a bill reauthorize federal agricultural programs through fiscal year 2011 rural programs, food aid, price supports and conservations for 5 yr. period. Of, course who needs farmers - not McCain!!!
Check McCain's education record-horrible!!
McCain who had denounced torture voted in Feb. against a ban on the very techniques of interrogation that he himself once endured in Vietnam - He will lie, and go beyond his own beliefs to become President.
IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID AND I WILL NOT VOTE
FOR MCCAIN OR HIS AIRHEAD V.P.
As the New Yorker stated: "We must restore America's moral credibility, closing Guantanamo, banning all torture, ending Iraq war as responsibly as possibly will provide a start!!

I'm a six year resident of Old Town Alexandria and member of the National Guard. In fact, I've got over 22 years of service with the Air Force and the National Guard. On July 25 I returned from my fourth deployment from Afghanistan (and Iraq) since 9/11. Disrespectful comments prove that the McCain Palin campaign is out of touch. It takes informed leaders to understand that a united America can overcome our many problems regardless of red or blue affiliations. Hardly a communist, this Alexandria veteran of many foreign wars is voting for Obama Biden and I encourage you to do the same.

Some one should explain "going on the offensive" to the McSame/Pain crew.
It isn't about insulting the most people.

Barry's record of baptism? John McCain doesn't know whether he is Baptist or Epsicopalian. I really, really hope he brings that up in the Carolinas. On other things, you've made so many factual errors, its hard to keep track of them, but I'll give it a shot. Obama has realeased his medical records - he smoked. Other than that, he is in perfect health. John McCain did not release his records. He allowed doctors 4 hours to go through over 1000 pages - and they all said it was impossible to review the records in the time given and that the fact that he refused to release them was in itself suspicious. Dementia and Alzheimer's are not included unless requested by the patient. Obama graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard. There is no requirement for a thesis as an undergraduate.
And the world is far too dangerous of a place to leave the security of our nation in the hands of a candidate who would say "“Nuclear weaponry, of course, would be the be-all, end-all of just too many people in too many parts of our planet.” Sarah Palin, September 2008

Has Barry been Vetted?
Barrys speeches are largely ambiguous, and lacks content regarding actual policies
Barry is the only major candidate who has been able to ride out his campaign as the guy who came from almost nowhere, thus unencumbered by the need to defend any old policies or past decisions.
The Obama campaign says that Sen. Obama has no state senate records to release?
Obama has not released his Rezko law records
The University of Illinois refuses to make public some papers that describe Barack Obama's work with Bill Ayers. Why would they do this?

Since early on in his campaign he has said that he would meet with the President of Iran - but we are left in the dark as to what agenda he would pursue
Barry has largely avoided highlighting what specific demands he would make of Ahmadinijad and any timetables he would establish for the Iranians to dismantle their nuclear program
The threat of Islamic terrorism and the expanding scourge of fanaticism are also concepts which have been addressed by Barry in only the most ambiguous of terms.
Barry has yet to suggest specific measures he would enact regarding the Jewish State's Qualitative Military Edge that allows Israel to defend itself against current and future enemies
The four years ahead are far too critical for global security to place the presidency of the United States in the hands of a leader whose campaign is leaving us with more questions than answers.
Who really is this man, and what policies will he impose?

It just sounds like a silly joke to me - he was in fllthy rich Reublcan country - the kind of places Carville and his wife and the Washington lobbysist have weekend homes. They all are aware of who lives in Alexandria and Arlington and I don't think anyone considers them communists.

Obama insulted a whole bunch of people when he talked about bitterness and clinging. But that was OK, right?

A joke about communism? Northern Virginia? This is soooo 1950s! Let the old man tell his joke. How old is he because only an unattractive loser under 40 would think a joke like that was funny. Hello welcome to the 21st century. in the 20th century it was communism vs. capitalism. Now it's like democracy vs. extremists or something. Anyway I wouldn't pay any attention to it. He might a had a few many...you knows. So who knows what he was thinking when he said that stupid joke. Now had he made a dirty joke about North Virginia. And you know focus on the word "virgin" then maybe. But no! Give me real news people like shoe sales at Bloomingdales or recall on a mixed fiber sweater that you know you shouldn't have bought when you couldn't even pronounce the name like polywollyurethaphane or something.

Democrat Paul Begala said recently that the guilt by association strategy McCain is using will come back to haunt. Begala wrote a book about McCain, and he wrote recently that:
"John McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing organization, it was the U.S. Council for World Freedom, it was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran contra scandal. It was an ultra conservative, right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981 when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League - the parent organization - which ADL said "has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites."
So what does that say about John McCain, and shouldn't everyone be concerned?
