Let the Wild Charges Begin: McCain Campaign Insinuates Joe the Plumber's Private Records Were Illegally Breached as "Political Retribution" by the Obama Campaign, Compares it to Watergate
October 25, 2008 6:25 PM
The Columbus Dispatch reports that "state and local officials are investigating if state and law-enforcement computer systems were illegally accessed when they were tapped for personal information about 'Joe the Plumber,'" the nickname of Joe Wurzelbacher.
"Public records requested by The Dispatch disclose that information on Wurzelbacher's driver's license or his sport-utility vehicle was pulled from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles database three times shortly after the debate. Information on Wurzelbacher was accessed by accounts assigned to the office of Ohio Attorney General Nancy H. Rogers, the Cuyahoga County Child Support Enforcement Agency and the Toledo Police Department. It has not been determined who checked on Wurzelbacher, or why. Direct access to driver's license and vehicle registration information from BMV computers is restricted to legitimate law enforcement and government business."
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Ohio Attorney General Betty Montgomery participated in a conference call set up by the McCain campaign to chat about this. (You can listen to the call HERE.)
Montgomery called for the inspector general in Ohio to immediately launch an investigation. "There are still very many questions to be answered," Montgomery said.
"In light of all of the allegations that are going on all over the country of voter fraud," Giuliani said, "to have this revelation also it seems to me to be something that is of really great concern to all of us."
"All Joe the Plumber did is ask a question," Giuliani said, giggling. "That should not open American citizens to having -- if this happened -- their private records probed because of some sort of political retribution. And if this is the way an Obama administration is going to conduct itself, the American people should know this before the fact."
When a reporter asked if there was any evidence that these records were breached by anyone with a political agenda, Giuliani said, "If this were someone on the Republican side you would not be asking the question." He said the inspector general needed to get to the bottom of why the information was sought.
When a reporter told Giuliani he was making some serious insinuations that the Obama campaign was involved in this, the former Mayor responded, "I don’t know if this came from the Obama campaign or not, but I think we have a right to find out. It is curious…"
Alluding to the Watergate break-in, Montgomery said it may be that this was "just a 'third-rate burglary,' quote, unquote, but it may not be, you never know."
"It does discourage people from asking questions," Giuliani said, "if they think that all of a sudden either at the direction of the campaign or just spontaneously all their personal records are going to get revealed if they ask a difficult question."

LMAO!
Let's see...divorce judgements? Public records. Tax liens? Public records. Having a plumber license (or not having one?) Public record.
Give me 10 minutes and I can tell you what anyone in the state paid in property taxes and it is all perfectly legal information to access.
Another non-issue by the GOP blowhard party! ROFL!

The character of Joe is not the point here. This could be looked upon as an act to silence free speech with the threat of public humiliation. Neither Joe's income nor his professional licenses have anything to do with his right to ask a public figure a civil question.

I think the greater story is discouraging the public from asking questions of our candidates. How many of you are really confident enough to challenge either Obama or McCain on issues.
Ahh well, just a preview of coming attractions.

If you have nothing to hide and you aren't a Republican plant, what is there to worry about?
This all makes sense if you think about it. Plant Joe the Plumber, bring him up 20+ times at the debate, then accuse your opposition of accessing his records. How dumb do they really think we are? McCain is the one who kept this yahoo in the news, not Obama.

I think McCain breached Joe's privacy when he mentioned him on national television 25 times in a 90 minute period, and continues to mention him in his speeches. Tax records are public...the Obama campaign wouldn't have to do any breaching. The McCain camp is just upset that they didn't do better research on this guy before dragging his name out, since his story turned out to be a total fraud. If they push this issue, they are going to look even more trivial and petty than they already do.

Wow. Really jumping the gun on the speculations and accusations. Who knows why the records were accessed. Could be very legit, like the Toledo Police or Cuyahoga County had reason to be interested in him. Or it could be something really stupid, like a woman who thought Joe W was good looking, and was wondering where he lived and if he was single. Or a bored and idly curious employee. I mean, has no one ever worked in an office? To jump right out and decided "Obama!!!" is just amazingly premature. And yes, when you get thrust into the limelight, things like this happen to you - because now, every Tom, Jane, and Harry with some data access and time on their hands, knows your name.

And all this coming from someone who belongs to the party that has promoted the law to allow the telephonic conversations from americans to be desclose for a group of strangers who claim that it is for security of the country. Stop with the telephone tapping and get rid with the Bulshit.

This is getting more and more pathetic with each day that goes by... The McCain campaign is trying all the dirty tricks available to win this election, 1) William Ayers crap, 2) Joe The Plumber joke, and last but not least 3) the West Pennsylvania woman reportly being "attacked" by a black man...!!! I smell a huge desperation in the air!!! Obama/Biden!

McCain and Bush are more like the plague. I agree they are a sickness that can't be cured. Please get this fringe of the Republican party out of our faces once and for all.

This article is off target. Let's get back to the remaining days of the election and the 'Bush Virus.'
Simply put, in a nutshell McCain has the Bush virus. The virus is spreading rapidly and is now infecting worldwide economies. McCain has and is trying very hard for a cure but there is no vaccine available. No one likes a virus especially a very bad one. The HIV virus was from the 80's, the bird flu virus was from the 90's and now this virus, the 'Bush Virus’ is from this decade. All of them are very bad and all of them will be discussed for a long time to come.
No matter how hard McCain tries to separate himself from Bush the virus still infects. To cure a virus you have to plan ahead. The man at the top of our government did not plan ahead and certainly McCain did not see it coming no matter how much he talks about Frannie and Freddie.
The virus is spreading and infecting worldwide and if you own a home, a 401K or IRA or have been laid off you have the full blown “Bush Virus.”

For those who have suggested that, for some reason, it was the Republican's who committed this crime, let me ask how they would be able to do this by accessing a computer in the Democrat attorney generals office?

OMG. How naive are you. The Republicans know every filty dirty tactic there is. I really hope this stunt blows up right in their pathetic faces. Of course, if it turns out it was a Republican, you will all say the media didn't do it's job. Nobody cares about this schmuck Joe anyhow.

In this age of deceit and technology, how do you know it wasnt a IP plant. Very easy to do but with the very simpliest answer and most probable: They lied about it.

Off the track. Off the track. Off the track. The GOP keeps wants to take things off the real issues. Millions have lost jobs and millions more will. Retirees have lost at least Two Trillion in value in retirement funds. People have lost homes, health care, pensions, the ability to afford to send their children to college/vocational school. So what do we talk about? Whether the Democrats broke into computers to see Joe the Plumber's records. That can be investigated and taken care of, but the real issue is that people are hurting. These "off the track" things don't do anything to help hurting people. John McCain and Sarah Palin, we don't care about the robocalls, the accusations, the name calling using names like "socialist." All of these are just meant to help us forget that your advisers are almost all retired lobbyists and CEOs who helped cause the economic meltdown in the first place. All of these are meant to make us forget that McCain-Gramm promoted and were in the middle of the "deregulate everything" philosophy which made the rich richer and the Middle Class jobless. Now it is time to talk about what you will do to help hurting people. John McCain and Sarah Palin, we will not allow you to get us off the track.

Betty Montgomery has always been a right wing freak. She strong-armed local people of importance to get her former position, and has been willing to throw anybody under a bus if it was to her advantage. Her personal politics are a little to the right of Atilla the Hun. Ask anyone in NW Ohio, why the GOP would contact her. She's a well known hack!

One can't just go to the IRS and ask for someone's tax records... it has to be a breach of confidentiality. Obama showed his true colors when he spoke to Joe the plumber. You, Tapper, want to paitn this as a right wing conspiracy. How else would you explain it. Do you think the republicans or independents are really interested in Joe's tax records. I think not. There can only be one party who is party to this disclosure. Your bias shows a lot and you are not an objective journalist or whatever you want to call yourself.

Assuming that Wurzelbacher was not wanted by the police, attorney general or was not behind in child payments, it is clear that a crime exists. Since this occurred right after his famous question, is it unreasonable to assume that this crime was politically motivated. Now, which party would want to get the "goods" on Mr. Wurzelbacher? So is Guilliani's insinuations so wild, after all? This cries out for investigation, now.

Richard, that is very good advice. We all know that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (3rd in Line to the Presidency) and Senate Leader Harry Reid (he incredibly declared we had lost in Iraq) are disasters and will bring partisan politics to a new high if they have more power. We are at critical mass with these 2 leading Congress.

They automatically assume it was a Democrat conspiracy. If I were running a campaign ad utilizing a private individuals particular circumstance against my opponent, I would first get a background check on that person (which includes retrieving info from all the above sources-for a price) so it doesnt backfire on me. The Reps are going down by their own hand.
---So Joe is afraid for America. Had Bush been the target of these comments of Joe the Taxevader, there would be a free vacation to the 'Bay'..with alittle waterboarding. Meanwhile, the rest of us are going to Disney World on the 5th of Nov.....GOBAMA
