Limbaugh Implies Powell Only Endorsed Obama Because He's Black

October 19, 2008 2:55 PM

Politico's Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen get an email from Rush Limbaugh about Gen. Colin Powell's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

"Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race," Limbaugh wrote. "OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I'll let you know what I come up with.

"I was also unaware of his dislike for John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Antonin Scalia. I guess he also regrets Reagan and Bush making him a four-star and secretary of state and appointing his son to head the FCC. Yes, let's hear it for transformational figures."

Powell said this morning that if this had been about race he would have endorsed Obama last year, as opposed to giving Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., campaign contributions. It was about the campaigns Obama and McCain have been waging, Powell said, and the candidates they have become.

It's probably is worth pointing out that there are a host of Bush Sr.-era Republicans who say they have been appalled at the rightward foreign policy direction of the Bush administration regarding Iraq, torture, Guantanamo, diplomacy, and other issues. Many say they think that McCain in many ways (though not all) seems even more conservative.

A good example is Powell's former long-time chief of staff, Col. Larry Wilkerson (Ret.), who has been very critical of the Bush administration since leaving its employ.

For Ryan who claims there are no intellectual Democrats I ask:

Then why is the right wing always crying about the universities and their professors. I would certainly classify these folks as intellectuals -- not college dropouts like Russ and Sean. And, in fact, another indication of this is that when one cannot put up a good argument for a topic, they start attacking the other candidate. They know their idea can't win.

As for Rush, if Powell's endorsement of Obama means he is a racist, then what does it say about Limbaugh's endorsement of any number of white candidates? In fact, I would argue that Gen. Powell is much more open minded since Obama is as much white as he is black.

But Limbaugh has never even realized how racist was the remark that got him thrown off football on TV, I am not sure there is much hope for him on this front.

RickP,
Are you at work? or just hanging?

Fact check: The Republican party has become the "joke," because of McSame Old-Same Old, Sarah Pal-in, Fox Noise & Rush Limbaugh's ranting drug hallucinations.

I was a Republican that voted for Bush two times and initially supported McCain over Obama until I got to know the real John McCain... A corrupt (Keating 5) out of touch (Tax Cuts for the Wealthy) bad judgment (Sarah Palin VP Choice) who also violates her office (Trooper-gate vs Keating 5) as did McCain who are both an embarrassment not only to the Republican party but to America! John McCain and Sarah Palin have run the most negative campaign of my life time and because of their right wing racist behavior and hate politics, I have officially changed parties from Republican to Democrat and all of my Republican friends have done the same. We will be voting for our next President of the United States "Barack Obama" we will also vote for every Democrat on the ballot to send a message to racist Republican party that I can no longer be a part of. Rush "Drug Addict" Limbaugh and his racist buddies over at FIX News, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Rilley are all part of the problem. The Republican party should be ashamed of themselves. It is now known as the party of old bitter racist white men and women. I cannot think of one single issue that matters to me as a voter that McCain stands for. I assure you there are hundred of thousands if not millions of X Republican voters that feel just like me. I perdict that Obama will win in a landslide. God Bless America, God Bless Barack Obama (Our Next President)and that old racist John McCain as well!

When Obama discusses a redistribution of wealth he is not inferring anything other than having the tax system fairly applied. I am in awe of the way both sides "American Idol" the issues to easily digestable sound bites and wrapped in the flag imagery. "Joe the Plumber" (Sam) is the poor victim of his own naively simple view of his position in his world. He is exactly the type of person that would benefit from Obamas tax suggestion. I'm sure that the school that I assume he went to and his kids attend, as well as the road he drives on to his under the table plumbing jobs were paid part and parcel by taxes. I'll bet he drives his American truck to Wal-Mart to buy Chinese and Sri Lankan t-shirts and HDTVs. While no one is happy about paying taxes, it is a necessity. Our roads, schools, police and fire, and practically everything that keeps our country from looking like a Mad Max movie, are paid for by taxes. Guys like Limbaugh, Levin, Drudge, Hannity and the like do nothing to advance their cause. Their sole purpose is to continue to polarize our nation to simple us/them. You're a patriot or not, you're pro life or pro choice (NO ONE IS PRO ABORTION! So STOP IT!) The first right winger (I'm sure there are already a few) who is parylized in an auto accident and cuts to the front of the line in stem cell research ought to have a reality TV show in his honor.
First listen to Rush, then listen to General Powells endorsement. In particular, pay attention to his statement on the dead American soldier. Then stop and ask yourself what an American is. This country is sick right now and needs to take a step back and examine itself.

I love it!

The pill popping, draft dodging, hate monger Ru$h Limbaugh IS anti-Republican.

He's all about rating$, and doesn't give a damn that's he's dragging the GOP into the muck, with his hilarious, "screaming into the air hallucinations that Powell endorsed Obama because of race".

Limbaugh is making a laughing stock out of any self respecting Republican that still has a ounce of morals left.

As Rush has admitted, he's out for more listeners. He's never shied from a controversy for the sake of sensation and doesn't consider the consequences beyond ratings potential.

He figures McCain will lose and ol' Rush is charting his course for the next four years. I expect him to push McCain-Palin over the cliff before the election so he can claim rights to blaming them (at least McCain) for the loss while still insisting Obama is wrong.

Limbaugh isn't guided by a moral compass but he has a vault of money because he is the favored freak-show for a minority that isn't any more moral than he is.

Think about it- Powell is a man of honor and I believe his endorsement is clearly based on McCain selling his own honor for the sake of an election....

I was leaning toward McCain but I cannot endorse his shameful and disgusting smear campaign!

Chalk up one more vote for Obama!

Good grief!
Limbaugh has finally lost it~
Totally about race???
This comment is definitely going to incite racial anger -

Limbaugh has now become very dangerous to the safety of our country.

Hey Rush, If you don't have anything intelligent to say, just say it anyway.
You probably can't resist opiate heaven but here's some advice for what it's worth: Lay off the Oxycontin dude.

Limbaugh =(demagogue, right winger, disciple of Atwater, nativist, draft-dodging plutocrat)

VERSUS

Powell =(soldier, statesman, patriot, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, former Sec. of State, etc.).

This is the fork in the road for the GOP. Who sets the agenda, Talk Radio and FOX, or men and women like Colin Powell?

Posted by: Joe Plumber | Oct 20, 2008 5:23:21 PM

Here's Limbaugh commenting about Donovan McNabb on ESPN on July 14, 2003:

"The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve."

Replace the word Donovan with Obama, and change the arena from football to politics, and nothing has changed. Rush resigned several months later. Rush is a huge stain on the Republican Party, and one big reason I am now a Democrat.

HE IS NOT ONLY BLACK HE HAS WHITE BLOOD IN HIM ALSO!!!!!SO IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER WHAT COLOR VOTES FOR HIM.

Posted by: SALLY | Oct 20, 2008 5:09:21 PM

John: You are too correct in this. In fact, I cannot think of a single liberal of any color or gender endorsed by Powell. However, in today's culture, he is entitled to be racist. Race appears to be the only factor in determining unearned entitlements these days.

Posted by: El Dia Octavo | Oct 20, 2008 4:46:35 PM

Judy H: You have no idea what you are talking about with trickle up/down/around or whatever it is. That has no bearing on Obama's tax policy or on economic policies. And attacking me is not germane to the issue...any more than attacking Limbaugh is germane.

I'm sure it makes you feel better somehow but that speaks more to your issues than the issues.

Hey Rush lovers,
Rush L is an extremist, scary !!!

His followers must enjoy this mean radio talk hoo de doo da show guy. Yeah good old Rush is laughing all the way to the Bank - gee, the banks are taking a huge dive. Damn, what will Rush do given America is bankrupt !!

Go Rush you idiot

"Interesting question though, find a white Democratic Liberal that Powell has endorsed..........hmmmmm......"

You're diverting from the real question which is, Limbaugh is the racist because he is white, blacks can not be racist due to the make up of the country.

Posted by: Judy H. | Oct 20, 2008 3:32:42 PM

This proves Powell's point about what the Republican Party has become. It used to be, you disagreed with the right wingers and you were a traitor or unpatriotic. Now, you're a racist. Powell is a Centrist and there is nothing Centrist about McCain's campaign or Rush Limbaugh.

Also, for those with 2 short an attention span to read past the "spread the wealth" soundbite slur against Obama. He was not referring to tax policy, he was referring to economics in terms of a trickle-up/trickle around theory. The middle class takes a dollar, spends it, transferiing it either upward or to Joe the Plumbers business, which grows for that dollar.

Posted by: Greg | Oct 20, 2008 3:28:08 PM

This is as racist as it gets-and Limbaugh knows it. He's going for the lowest common denominator-pure and simple, and the more commotion he can cause, the more the sentiment will be amplified. Problem is, all the racists are already voting McCain. I don't see him winning too many converts.

What would you expect, from a racist drug addict?

Rush's Long History of Racist Demagogy

Rush Limbaugh

From FAIR: "As a young broadcaster in the 1970s, Limbaugh once told a black caller: 'Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.' A decade ago, after becoming nationally syndicated, he mused on the air: 'Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?' Limbaugh expressed his ire when Spike Lee urged that black schoolchildren get off from school to see his film Malcolm X: 'Spike, if you're going to do that, let's complete the education experience. You should tell them that they should loot the theater, and then blow it up on their way out.' In a similar vein, here is Limbaugh's mocking take on the NAACP, a group with a 90-year commitment to nonviolence: 'The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.' When Carol Moseley-Braun was in the Senate, the first black woman ever elected to that body, Limbaugh would play the 'Movin' On Up' theme song from TV's 'Jeffersons' when he mentioned her."

Rush Limbaugh isn't fit to make any comment on a distinguished and accomplished person such as Colin Powell. Limbaugh, like most of his right wing commentator friends, is very afraid he's going to be out of a job as his rants become more and more irrelevant. Colin Powell's endorsement is not only a crucial validation of Barack Obama's qualifications, and a severe blow to the underhanded McCain effort to associate Obama with "terrorism," but it also covered the insidious nature of the Limbaugh-like suggestions made by Gov. Sarah Palin and Rep. Michele Bachmann that anyone with views other than those they approve must be "anti-American." Perhaps this election will finally give the nation the chance to put to rest the phoniness of the claim that Republicans have pretended to have on patriotism and being pro-American--as if that was their exclusive territory. The evidence suggests the opposite, that Republicans have repeatedly put self-interest and political expediency and greed ahead of the nation's interests, and I'd call that pretty "anti-American" if I didn't think such a term was not worth using at all, by anyone. Elect Obama for a brighter future for our nation.

Posted by: GD | Oct 20, 2008 3:14:05 PM

Today I heard from a Republican friend of mine who has been supporting McCain/Palin for most of the campaign. However, due to the 1)debates, 2) the erratic behavior and 3) the FINAL NAIL IN MCCAIN/PALINS COFFIN WAS THE ENDORSEMENT BY COLIN POWELL. So, today she voted for Obama (in FL) where we had our first day of early voting...not only that, she brought her sister-in-law and her husband with her, who were also republicans (Cuban at that), and ALL voted for Obama!

-Brandon

ps
I voted for Obama in the state Primary (even though I knew it didn't count)and look forward to voting for him again sometime this week :)
