McCain Campaign vs the New York Times (Round 15)

October 18, 2008 10:34 AM

"Today the New York Times launched yet another in a series of vicious attacks on Senator John McCain, this time targeting not the candidate, but his wife Cindy," writes McCain-Palin spokesman Michael Goldfarb. "Under the guise of a 'profile' piece, the New York Times fails to cover any new ground or provide any discernible value to the reader other than to portray Mrs. McCain in the worst possible light."

Continues Goldfarb, "Mrs. McCain’s battle with drug addiction and even her miscarriages are again reported, the paper entirely ignores a life devoted to family and charity work in the most impoverished and violent corners of the world -- except when a detail can be quibbled with so as to imply some kind of deceit. This campaign made every effort to share personal accounts of Mrs. McCain’s good works with the paper, but apparently they were deemed unfit for publication in the New York Times. This is gutter journalism at its worst -- an unprecedented attack on a presidential candidate's spouse."

The Times story to which he refers can be read HERE.

(And incidentally, the Times also today takes a closer look at some of the past corporate clients of Obama's top adviser, David Axelrod, which can be read HERE.)

Labeling the story a "hit piece," Goldfarb writes, "The New York Times has stooped lower than this campaign ever imagined possible in an attempt to discredit a woman whose only apparent sin is being married to the man that would oppose that paper’s preferred candidate, Barack Obama, in his quest for the Presidency. It is a black mark on the record of a paper that was once widely respected, but is now little more than a propaganda organ for the Democratic party. The New York Times has accused John McCain of running a dishonorable campaign, but today it is plain to see where the real dishonor lies."

In addition, Cindy McCain's lawyer John Dowd writes to the Times' executive editor, which the McCain campaign has released to the press:

"It is worth noting that you have not employed your investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama," Dowd writes. "You have not tried to find Barack Obama's drug dealer that he wrote about in his book, Dreams of My Father. Nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya and determined why Barack Obama has not rescued them. Thus, there is a terrific lack of balance here."

(Interesting. So before an audience of national media, Dowd is invoking the "drug dealer" from the Democrat's youthful use of pot and cocaine in order to decry such irrelevancies.)

"I suggest to you that none of these subjects on either side are worthy of the energy and resources of The New York Times," he concludes. "They are cruel hit pieces designed to injure people that only the worst rag would investigate and publish. I know you and your colleagues are always preaching about raising the level of civil discourse in our political campaigns. I think taking some your own medicine is in order here."

For all you condoning the NYT article, you should be ashamed, but I forgot, it's OK to bash and be ugly as long as you do it to Republicans.
Cindy McCain has ALWAYS been open about her addiction. At least she had a medical reason to use the drug which she became addicted to, millions of people fight addictions to prescription medications. She realized her error and corrected it. That's a strong and honest person. So on the flip side, Why is OK for Obama to use drugs recreationally? Once again, the old liberal double standard!
As for the other PERSONAL issues that the article brought up, they have NOTHING to do with the campaign and are NOT anyone's business but the McCain's. You liberals would NEVER allow this sort of CRAP against one of your liberal women! I don't see you digging up dirt on Mrs. Obama and we know her career was aided by earmarks and government money! I find that ALOT worse! And like several other posts stated, this article did NOT show ALL that Cindy McCain has done for people all over the world! She uses her time and personal wealth to do so much more good than either one of the Obama's have ever done! All their efforts are for themselves or have racial connotations! I find that offensive. You would crucify the McCain's if all their charity only benefit whites like the Obama's are targeted to minorities, especially blacks. Racism goes both ways.
In summation, this article on Cindy McCain was not journalism, it was a typical liberal it job.

Be it a rant or a rave
Obama or McCain is your fave
Come Election Day
That's when you'll make the pay
If Americans are that fickle-minded...
so blame it to where the media have sided;
NY Times or FOX TV...
Let them both what they can be;
They always have a protege...
...and if he becomes the President we see...
I bet my balls... you'll forget ABC...

I bet next week they will be doing a complete expose' on Joe The Plumber.
They have to sell that rag somehow.

CRY BABIES..This is politics in America It have always been like that..The media have always taken sides and people have always cry foul. The only difference in this election is a black man beating a old white man at his game..Obama and McCain are politicians and they are both the same they both will lie to you to get what they want its nothing new and it will never change.
Anyone in America who call themselves a Republican or Decorate or even a so call independent is just fulling themselves. You should be free to think for yourself you don't have to be in a Gang to find your way no one Gang have the answer.

goodbye capitalism , hello communism, or have both, vote Obama.
China has it and they are taking over the world without one of it's troops outside it's boarder.
If Rome, Islam, Crusades, Greece, Spain, Portugal, England, France (am I leaving any one else out) then U.S. will join that list. I predict France will overtake U.S. as a leader in the free world.

You're going to have to come up with more evidence to convincr people of this B.S. By the way, if you watced the debates , Obama wore a flag pin and McCain did'nt.

Hit piece by the NYT? Hardly.

I didn't know much about Cindy Mc prior to this article, but here is what I see: I see a person working to do good things in this world; I see a woman supporting the man she loves to the extent that she is capable; I see a woman who was treated unfairly by the Washington crowd through no fault of her own; I see a woman who, just like the rest of us, has had ups and downs in life and encountered a few things she struggled to deal with; I see a woman that I can admire and respect for doing the good she can.

Senator McCain is blessed to have a woman like that at his side.

Complain all you want but it's the truth and the truth hurts. Call a drug addict a drug addict maybe thats why she doesn't understand what the truth is when she stands up and lies about terrorism and taxes

Posted by: Tyson | Oct 19, 2008 6:37:02 PM

I am not surprised at the garbage that NYT printed as they are afterall the Obama Media. I think it was a malicious attack not real reporting. notice they wont do a piece on obama or michelle Obama.I think The McCains have every right to holler foul play. The reporter for one went after a sixteen year old to get information Thatis the lowest of lows.
now as faar as Obama crying foul play with Fox news I say boo hoo ....Fox news is the only channel that will report truth .unlike the rest of the Obama Media.

Posted by: Tammy | Oct 19, 2008 4:17:29 PM

I think it's funny how Fox "News" complains about the New York Times article on Cindy McCain being a "hit piece", but yet airs "hit pieces" on Obama all day long with their shows Ties That Bind, and Obama & Friends: A History of Radicalism.
The idea that a 24 hour cable news channel can put off airing any news for just airing attacks on a presidential candidate 24/7 just so their man can win is beyond me. ( ok, got that off my chest )

Is there any wonder why the New York Times profits have dropped 80% with this kind of yellow journalism? I dropped my subscription some time ago.

Posted by: anne1244 | Oct 19, 2008 2:02:23 PM

The former "Paper Of Record" has time to do a hit piece on the wife of a candidate but no time to say, do a story on Obama's admitted drug use (mentioned in his "Dream" book) and no time to camp outside Bill Ayers home to get an interview with him. And where is B.O.'s medical records, his doctoral dissertion, and where oh where is that lady who's "never been proud of her country" ?

These comments on what gets tagged with the "Socialist" label is really quite comical. Due to the events of the past month we are either all socialists or we are all something else. I do not know of any thinking person that believes what happened in congress two weeks ago was a desirable thing. I do believe that 75 percent of the Senate believed it was a necessary thing. Having said that why on earth would someone suggest that Obama's agenda is socialist and McCain's is free market? The fact is that they both voted for this act and in so doing they both supported a "socialist" band-aid for a free-market economy. This business reminds me of someone who doesn't believe in the use of modern medicine, but prefers to stake his life on the power of prayer. But alas, he takes a chainsaw to his leg and when he wakes up he finds out that his life was saved by advanced medical intervention. Is he mortified that he is alive for the wrong reason-- or does he shallow hard and set about staying healthy enough so that he's principles will never again be violated. The point of this is that as a nation we were forced to do something that we really did not want to do. But for the leader of the ruling party to brand someone a socialist because he voted the same way as him is ridiculous.
We are all to blame--- some more than others. It is indeed, ironic, that the folks that have the least in terms of wealth and education are the strongest supporters of those who tower over then in both respects. Perhaps it is to their credit that they don't want to benefit from the good fortune of others. But the simple fact is that neither party addresses the issue of the enormous debt-- and to my way of thinking it will not repay itself. And the longer we spending waiting for tickle down economics to kick in a allow the working poor to pay enough taxes so that the non-working rich can claim vindication, the larger that debt becomes. We call the concept of increasing government spending while asking nothing of the people in terms of taxes reaganism or tickle-down economics. Many of us tried the same thing using our credit cards. After all, who among us hasn't used our high interest credit to invest in our own future by buying books or taking college course in the hope that my doing so would allow us to get a better job so we could easily pay off the credit card bill. That works in some cases, but after about 30 years of paying the interest while waiting for the results, we might have to conclude that we were wrong. As a nation of "have it now--pay for it later types"--- we are all responsible for this massive paradigm shift. So, lets try real hard to use our heads for change, and realize that events have overtaken us ALL-- not just liberals.

Boo hoo Cindy, It was all fun and games when you got on the stump telling proven lies about Obama and calling him a terrorist and whatever else but now that someone points out the obvious you are/were an addict who stole from a charity even though you make $4 million a year you cry fowl. The difference is what you said had no basis in fact and this does that why it strikes a chord. What makes you more vile is that while you were an addict and stole for drugs, you spent no prison time and you have the nerve to think you have the moral high ground to spit down on Obama and others. Looking at any close picture of her like the on in GQ she looks like an addict. I understand poor little rich girl no fair to talk about her bury the truth only those other lower people should be attacked, cry m a river. The McCain campaign should remember about stones and glasshouses

The NY Times has ceased to be a credible news source. You are far too liberal to credible. You have spawned a similar so-called news source in Gainesville, Florida with that paper you own, as well. You can't be a news source and be biased.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Helen from Canada. As an American, I can support her theory that most Americans do not care enough to find out the facts and make an informed decision. If they did, Hillary would have crushed Obama in the primary, and McCain would probably win the election hands down. Obama's family in Kenya who only make ten dollars per year do need saving, and Sean Hannity has pledged to donate money personally if Obama will provide contact information for hime to send the money to Kenya. I think the mainstream media and the McCain campaign should hammer home Obama's connection to Farrakhan, as that association is much more frightening than his association with William Ayers. Add ACORN into the mix and it is supprising that Obama made it through the Vetting process at all. I guess questioning his assiciations must be a racist view, right? I suppose questioning his socialist wealth redistribution policies must also be racist.

earmarks to the hospital where Michelle Obama represented in 2005 check congressional budget records FY 2005 and 2006 for the exact numbers and she got a raise. Helen from Canada,

Thanks for the advice...we "lazy" Americans will be sure to take that into account when Canada becomes a country that is fiscally sustainable without commerce from the US.

I also would like to thank you for serving as the stereotypical Canadian that likes to pretend they are better than Americans - go throw your skates on and play hockey.

Posted by: sara | Oct 19, 2008 2:41:45 AM

Can Helen really lecture the US on our politicians when they constantly dissolve parliament and Quebec continuously demands to form a separate country. If the US has questions on ice hockey, maple syrup, or leaching off the success of their neighbors, Helen, you will be the first we come to.

Otherwise, do not try to form opinions of a political process or candidate that you lack intelligence or capability to comprehend.

Mr. Jake seemed reluctant to stoop to citing the following, so let me do the job:

"In order to assemble this barrage of petty and personal attacks, the New York Times employed tactics that are obviously unprofessional and almost certainly unethical. This campaign has obtained a copy of an email sent by New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor to a 16-year-old girl and friend of Bridget McCain, the youngest of the McCain children. Ms. Kantor sought to dupe the unsuspecting minor by soliciting ‘advice' on how best to approach the story, as if a top-flight investigative reporter at the New York Times would need the assistance of an underage girl in writing a hit piece." McCain-Palin spokesman Michael Goldfarb.

I saw on facebook that you went to Xavier, and if you don't mind, I'd love to ask you some advice about a story. I'm a reporter at the New York Times, writing a profile of Cindy McCain, and we are trying to get a sense of what she is like as a mother. So I'm reaching out to fellow parents at her kids' schools. My understanding is that some of her older kids went to Brophy/Xavier, but I'm trying to figure out what school her 16 year old daughter Bridget attends-- and a few people said it was PCDS. Do you know if that's right? Again, we're not really reporting on the kids, just seeking some fellow parents who can talk about what Mrs. McCain is like.

Also, if you know anyone else who I should talk to-- basically anyone who has encountered Mrs. McCain and might be able to share impressions-- that would be great.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.
