McCain on John Lewis's Charge: 'It Stopped Me in My Tracks'
October 13, 2008 11:44 PM
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., sat down with CNN's Dana Bash today for an interview.
Bash asked McCain the difference between Williams Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright -- why would he go after Obama's less solid connection with Ayers instead of the strong one with Wright?
"William Ayers was an unrepentant terrorist," McCain said "That's a unique individual in American history. A person who still wants to destroy America…That's an unusual breed of cat."
McCain also said Obama "wasn't telling the American people the truth" on Ayers and then turned to Obama on public financing.
Of some of the more offensive things yelled about Obama at his rallies, McCain said he's "heard the same thing at Sen. Obama's rallies said about me." But for anyone to intimate that the majority of people at his rallies are like that, McCain said, "I won't accept that insult."
McCain brought up the harsh charges made by Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., about the tenor of McCain-Palin rallies, saying, "a respected member of Congress, John Lewis, who I admire…somehow linked me and Gov. Palin to racism, to segregationism, to some of the worst aspects ever to appear in American politics. And Sen. Obama refuses, or has not yet repudiated those comments…"
"It's unfair and it's outrageous," McCain said. "The accusation that Congressman Lewis made is so far out of bounds and so disturbing, of course it stopped me in my tracks...He even referred to the bombing of a church in Birmingham...”

"I'm sorry Mr. Obama, but how can you force something that is subjective (i.e. morality)??"
Haha! You force it with power, because groups do not respond to morality, even if people do. Groups will always be self-interested; morality is not only the product of individual ethical judgments. King believed this. Kanan Makiya believed this in wanting the U.S. to defeat Saddam. This is also why we have laws. Within a group, there is a consensus on morality, and the form of this consensus can be altered through power.
While it you find it regrettable, the civil rights movement outmatched the supporters of segregation.

We’ve come so far over the years in regard to race relations.
It sounds like Mr. Lewis wants to judge John McCain by the color of his skin and not by the content of his character.
Isn’t that sad after all these years and all the great strides in this country?
It feels like we just took a step back in time. Only, this time the bigot is John Lewis.
This election should not be about race. It should be about the candidates and their policies.
Don't pull out the race card simply to defend Obama's association or friendship with terrorists. Terrorism knows no color.
Facts are facts. Obama was in a known terrorist's living room when he began his political career.
Terrorism and racism should not be tolerated, no matter your skin color.

Very foolish and irresponsible statements by this John Lewis character. tsk tsk. Shame on you John Lewis. Would Martin Luther King Jr. be proud of you? I think not. Playing the race card like this has backfired. These comments prove that you, Mr. Lewis, are the racist.

Feb. 2005, Obama spoke at John Lewis' 65th birthday celebration, one where he called Mr. Lewis a "living saint"...in the speech, Mr. Obama cites countless acts of racial hatred, and a call to bend the arc of morality by force because "It doesn't bend on its own. It bends because we help it bend that way. Because people like John Lewis and Hosea Williams and Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks and thousands of ordinary Americans with extraordinary courage have helped bend it that way. And as their examples call out to us from across the generations, we continue to progress as a people because they inspire us to take our own two hands and bend that arc"
I'm sorry Mr. Obama, but how can you force something that is subjective (i.e. morality)??
This man is dangerous

Reverand wright is a racist. True, but he is not running for president, Obama is, nor is he in Obama's inner circle. Guys, this ayers wright theme is getting REALLY REALLY OLD. The times are too serious for us to be having these silly arguments based on baseless associations and insults to our collective intelligence. At home, we've got a heightening economic crisis, increasing joblessness threatening to undermine the livelihoods of entire towns, people's retirement savings decimated, folks getting thrown out of their homes, and a regulatory framework guided by ideology rather than pragmatism. Overseas, we're fighting two wars, an increasingly belligerent Iran, a resurgent Russia eager to reassert it's influence on the former soviet bloc (and now Venezuela), Ukraine destabilized, China rising, and North Korea unresolved, our alliances strained due to our unilateralism..the global tectonic plates are shifting...and here we have John McCain playing these dirty totally irrelevant political games, blatantly repeating lies, making baseless associations, inciting hate in the electorate, destabilizing the markets with his political maneuvers, appointing a recently PROVEN corrupt running mate who knows NOTHING about the economy and the world a 72-year old heartbeat away from presidency, and dividing the country along choices (guns, race, abortion, religion, left-right) that are totally IRRELEVANT to this new and very threatening environment, and having absolutely no solid plans to get us out of it. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I cannot believe that John McCain is STILL NOT interested in challenging Obama's plans, and presenting to the American public why his plans are PRACTICALLY SUPERIOR or relevant to the current environment, or how they are actually DOABLE. He has not explained how his approach is a significantly different approach to the failures of the last 8 years. His healthcare plan is a farce, taxing my health benefits to give me a $5000 healthcare tax credit which will not buy me even a bare bones healthcare plan, his tax plan is unsustainable and rewards those who don't need it, he has absolutely no solid ideas for our recovery, his 300 billion mortgage is voter bait, not a practical solution, his spending freeze of $18 billion will not even come close to paying for his tax cuts - populist talk, but bad math, and absolutely no transition plan for when he assumes power so he can get to work on day one (he felt winning the election was more important than planning ahead), and shows the underlying influence of special interests in his policy making and his past judgment, and his foreign policy positions have been PROVEN wrong consistently, with his war mongering rhetoric getting increasingly aggressive...Look, YOU CAN HIRE EXPERIENCE, AND YOU CAN BUY KNOWLEDGE, BUT IF YOUR MORAL COMPASS IS MISALIGNED YOUR EXPERIENCE IS OF NO USE TO US. It infuriates me the absurdity that this once great man has stooped to. Is he THIS out of touch with reality? We need a serious president, with a steady and even temperament, who is willing to listen to EVERYONE and come up with solutions that work for ALL OF US. We need a president who has the intellect, and the moral compass pointing true north to our interests, who helps the nation focus on what we have in common, not why we are different...we need a president who understands that issues should lie at the foundation of political attacks, not baseless associations focused on dominating the next news cycle. We need a president who understands that the foundation of our economy is jobs, and who focuses our workforce in industries that will ensure our leadership in alternative energy globally through pragmatic investment. We need someone whose inner circle of influence is not tainted by special interests and lobbyists, who has the highest probability of reforming Washington. We need someone who understands the new world order, and who understands that war is but one TACTIC, along with intelligence, diplomatic and economic leverage in our overall STRATEGY to counter our foreign policy challenges today. We need a president who is a calming voice in this cacophony of chaos, who calls out to the best within all of us to lead us out of this hole we've dug ourselves into, not divide us and calls on our hate. We need a President who is a pragmatist, who has been consistent, with judgment that is guided by good nature and insights rather than a thirst for power and impractical populist ideologies. We need someone with new ideas, and a new approach to change our course in history. ENOUGH WITH THIS PETTY HATE MONGERING, THE TIMES ARE TOO SERIOUS FOR THIS KIND OF NONSENSE. I DON'T CARE IF HE IS BLACK, WHITE, BLUE OR PURPLE, AND I DONT CARE IF HE IS PRO OR ANTI ABORTION, OR LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE...I JUST CARE THAT HE IS RIGHT FOR THE CHALLENGES WE NOW FACE. Some of you appear to think that we support Obama because of the glitz and glamour...but you see..we have evaluated the policies of both candidates, not their ideologies or party. We have evaluated their plans not their color or religion. We have evaluated the people who are most likely to directly influence them during their presidency, not who they've merely run across in their lives. We have seen and felt Obama's call for unity, and we are feeling hope in his message, instead of dwelling in the darkness of our prejudice. We have evaluated the team Obama has put together, and understand his rationale for getting these individuals together. We want Barack Obama as president because he is our single last hope for a pragmatic government focused on practical solutions to solve our problems, not someone throw proposals out there that sound great, but have no broad strategic thread that ties everything together.

Give it a rest McCain
You're fooling very little anymore

I feel like we're in the Twilight Zone. McCain says Lewis' connecting him to Wallace is "unfair," "outrageous" and "disturbing," especially mentioning the church bombing?
Well, then, what the heck is it to McCain when he himself connects Obama to Ayers, Osama Bin Laden and bombing the pentagon?
I have never imagined I would hear a public figure stare into a camera and just flat out make stuff up. From facts to emotions, McCain and Palin have cracked open a dangerous new dimension in politics which, if there isn't some way to wrench at least a modicum of honesty back, will set a precedent in how we elect people that actually COULD end up putting some dangerous hidden personae into the White House.
Ooops, for a moment there, I actually forgot about Palin!

So sorry Saint Michael I meant the reply to Politically Correct

Saint Michael
You forgot about Obama's FEC records.
They are amended constantly and we forget about the phony names on them.
I hope that he doesn't take the people, taking care of these inaccurate and deceiving forms for him, to White House with him if he gets in!!!
Can you imagine the economy then?
I heard him (Obama) say today that he won't disturb the top 5% taxpayers rates. I quess since billionaire Buffett is a big supporter of Obama it would be bad for him to tax more money from the media and insurance companies Buffett owns.

Obama has met Vice-President Cheney and they have been in the same building and room often. In addition, Senator Obama and Vice President Cheney are blood relatives. Since Vice-President is a very conservative-reactionary individual, therefore Senator Obama must be too. Obama been indoctrinated by the Vice-President and he must be conservative-reactionary!
Great! We did not need that.
Some of the good supporters of Senator McCain say that Senator Obama is Arab, and then Vice-President must be an Arab too. Did Vice-President know that?

LOL......SHEEP SHEEP SHEEP
Like another poster wrote......It is okay for Rev. Wright to yell and conduct himself like a racist PIG....but Americans in all of their freedom of speech cannot call it like they see it?
It seems to me that most of these people were calling Ayers a terrorist and shouting remarks about him, but then again I was not there I am only listending with BOTH EARS as to what/who they were yelling against....
But let us do call OBAMA's character, or rather lack of into question and then by all means read his book and find out just how much of a dirty politician he is and how much he will back a certain agenda no matter what the costs. If that were ever to be called into question, why on earth was he over in Kenya supporting his murdering cousin and helping him to get elected???????
Ayers + Rev. Wright + (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) + ACORN + Giving $800,000 to ACORN for what appears to be committing fraud/forgery + Farrakhan + Rezko + Raines + Khali Al-Mansour + Communist Frank Marshall Davis + Rashi Khalidi + Refusal to show full length vault copy of Birth Certificate + Refusal to prove he is no longer an Indonesian Citizen + Refusal to show college transcripts to prove he actually graduate from college denoting his grades + Refusal to show thesis (which is something America will not appreciate from what I hear) =
Shady Character/Liar/Deceitful/Untrsutwrothy/
Dangerous/Criminal Like Behavior....etc...etc..
If McCain hung around a domestic terrorist whom blew up buildings and said he didn't do enough or if he attened a KKK church for over 20 years.....their would be RIOTS in the streets......
Political Correctness is the DOWNFALL of this society and someones (OBAMA) " chickens are coming home to roost", my only fear is that it will be at our expense!

Rep. John Lewis is SO right. Tragedy often starts with casual remarks someone finds amusing then escalates from there. Think of the tauntings that have led to school shootings. Or attacks on gay Matthew Shepherds. Don't underestimate the powers of suggestion. McCain doesn't get it, though he should since he has a daughter that has surely been the victim from time to time of slurs about her skin color.

John McCain was a P-O-W when the Forrestal caught fire.
Posted by: commrat72 | Oct 14, 2008 2:27:15 PM
Kravitz: McCain did not start the fire on the "ORISKINY"(sp) The people who died were "Sailors" and Obama is a big ACORN! Com-Pre-Hend?

What a bunch of whinny, cry baby kool aid drinkers! Wallace was in "THE PEOPLES' PARTY" you know? So where is the HAIL AND BRIMSTONE falling around Rev. Wrong, HHmmm? Its ok to raise hail if your black? Free ride? McCain said nothing and even went so fall as to tell his followers that this is the wrong way to do things. So....race baiting is the norm for the Dems? It all makes sense to me now. NOT!!! We are all Americans but it is you all that is Race Baiting. You don't want to pull us together as you have stated. You want us seperated between the haves and the havenots. That way the havenots will be beholding to you! Divide and conquer is the platform, no matter how big the riff! When it is all said and done, 40 years of race relations will be damaged. So save your sound bites and links. That way you can spin an ACORN in a Mighty Joak!!

Can McCain take responsibility for the killing of 133 soldiers on the USS Forrestal?
What did he learn from it?
Now, that, I would like to hear him answer. Having hidden below deck while the others perished and all that....

There should be a special Academy Award for the faux outrage from the McCain campaign. If it walks like and duck and quacks like a duck...

Why didn't you ask McCain about his cozy relationship with Gordon Liddy - another unrepentant terrorist?
Posted by: postmort | Oct 14, 2008 10:43:26 AM
Did it stop McCain in his tracks when his VP candidate said "Obama pals around with terrorists?" Or the head of the GOP in Virginia said "Obama is the same as Osama?"

in other words... all I have to do is create/allow the climate to stem
the rest is in motion...
Posted by: roy | Oct 14, 2008 10:18:45 AM
This is crazy. McCain thinks he doesn't need to repudiate incendiary comments shouted repeatedly by his supporters, but Obama needs to repudiate someone's reaction to those comments?
Obama could give the same defense McCain offered: "I hear the same thing from the opposition".
But then, just as McCain is, he would be lying.

Didn't George Wallace once say... "I just lay the grass where the goats can get to it"
Posted by: roy | Oct 14, 2008 10:16:11 AM
"It's unfair and it's outrageous," McCain said
excuse me? ok, so explaining that you're not a muslim time and time again, explaining your christian faith, explaining your family, explaining your friends, explaining how you're really an "american" despite you being born here just like any other person, haivng to hear these harsh words "terrorist" "traitor" "off with his head"
is this whats fair? IS IT?
I can't wait until Obama is elected.
