McCain Raises the Spectre of a Multi-headed Reid-Pelosi-Obama Hydra Controlling Washington, DC
October 26, 2008 1:32 PM
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – There's a topic that Sen; Barack Obama, D-Ill., and his campaign don't seem eager to discuss much, or at all, and it's one that Republicans are raising with increasing frequency in these final days: the notion of one-party rule returning to Washington DC.
Speaking at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque on Saturday morning, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., raised the prospect of Democrats controlling the White House, the Senate, and the House.
"Senator Obama is measuring the drapes and planning with Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid to raise taxes, increase spending and concede defeat in Iraq," McCain said.
It's one of McCain's closing arguments, and it makes sense. As ABC News' Polling Director Gary Langer points out, many swing-voting independents don't like the idea of one party controlling the executive branch, as well as both houses of Congress.
Independents, by 43-34 percent in the latest ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll, say divided government is the better way to go.
And by 45-37 percent they say they'd rather see Republicans win control of Congress. (Which ain't gonna happen. As of now, House Republicans lament, the only question is how many seats they lose.)
You're going to hear this argument a lot this week; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., has even come up with a handy nickname for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and (in this construct) President Barack Obama: "RePO".
And it's why you hear Republicans seize upon remarks like those made by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chair of the House Financial Services Committee, who told a local Massachusetts newspaper that in addition to a second economic stimulus package he'd like to see Congress enact a 25 percent cut in military spending.
Frank doesn't control the pursestrings of the Pentagon budget, but the underlying argument is that America is about to turn over control to a bunch of liberal Democrats.
Bloomberg News columnist Amity Shales, a senior fellow in economic history at the Council on Foreign Relations, writes that RePO won't be popular on Wall Street.
Shales writes of Eric Singer, founder of the new mutual fund the Congressional Effect Fund, who noted that "the Standard & Poor's 500 Index performs two or three times better when Congress is out of session than when at least one of the two chambers is at work. That difference, Singer discovered, wasn't because of political party -- a laboring Republican Congress was also problematic. The poor performance, rather, reflects market anxiety that the House and Senate generate when they pass a new regulation or revise laws already on the books. Simple congressional workday chatter about possible changes is also negative, according to the Singer data."
Looking back at the data from 1965 to today, Singer came to the conclusion that a divided Washington – "in which at least one of the two chambers is led by a party other than the president's, points to a better total return for the S&P 500 than a unified Washington in which the presidency, House and Senate are controlled by one party...Having Democrat Bill Clinton in the White House in 1998 constrained congressional Republicans, or the other way around."
Obama talks a lot about his record of "reaching across the aisle," a record that's fairly thin in Washington DC.
But what if he doesn't have to reach across the aisle to get his legislative agenda passed? What if Pelosi and Reid rejoice in their fatter majorities and decide they ultimately have no need to take any Republican concerns into account?
Obama doesn't seem overly concerned about that prospect. Earlier this month, he suggested that with a Democratic Congress he'd be able to "get something done."
Obama told Pittsburgh's KDKA-TV: "I think that if current trends continue we will continue to have a Democratic Congress. And I think that what the American people need at a moment when we've got huge problems here at home -- we've also got huge problems abroad with two wars -- what we need is a President who can mobilize Congress to actually get something done, instead of continuing the gridlock that we've seen over the last eight years. And that is something that I intend to provide—that leadership."
Obama's impulses throughout his career have been to reach out to Republicans on a few relatively uncontroversial subjects, and to generally maintain a fairly orthodox liberal Democratic voting record. His rhetoric speaks of uniting the country, and there's talk that should he win he'd appoint a couple Republicans to his Cabinet. But when push comes to shove, would he take on Pelosi and Reid and reach out to House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, if he doesn't have to?
Of course, whether or not the RePO issue has any real resonance with voters is of course an open question. McCain made the charge in Albuquerque before a crowd of somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 people Saturday morning. On Saturday evening, Obama spoke at Johnson Field at the University of New Mexico. He attracted a crowd of roughly 35,000.

My grandfather was a vegetable farmer during the depression and used the food he grew as a means of paying for doctors or other things they needed. They at least had food to eat. My dad talked abouot growing up through the depression as a kid without much food to eat most of the time.

I love this country also even now with all her faults. All government is to blame, yet so are we for not demanding better than what we have gotten. I try to find something to base a vote on other than what is said by politicans at election time. I see McCain has contributed 25% roughly of his income to charity. Obama from what I heard barely contributed. I believe it shows some character on McCain's part. I still believe in honor and knowing Naval Officers honor is something they believe in. I don't mind negative attacks in politics and am sure if the poll numners were reversed you would see much more negativity on Obama's part. I guess I will go with honor and character and hope he can get somewhere with a democratic congress. I still want checks and balances and figure the democrats will retain their control so we need the opposite in the white house. But I always plan for the worse and hope for the best. We are closer to a depression of major proportions than people realize.

Didn't you know?
Obama will power the world on sunshine and daisies.
We'll all live on solar-powered communes with free-range chickens and organic veggies.
And we'll all wear the same beige inoffensive garb with a smile on our faces at all times, lest we be viewed as having Republican thoughts.

Couldn’t agree more A Veteran:
I look at my parents living on a limited income and making due on what they have . . . My parents who are both in their 80’s and who remember the depression well – remember its struggles - and remember the sacrifices made for day to day existence . . . The thing most Americans don’t understand is how precariously close to that edge we actually are . . .
I myself see my mortgage balance exceeding what my house is actually worth . . . I see me and my parents incomes being eroded but still we fight on . . . We save for tomorrow – we don’t buy what we can’t afford – we do without so we can buy gas to get to work and food to survive on . . . .
My father, who never got a welcome home parade when he came home from Korea, always brought us up with pride in this great country of ours . . . My parents love this country to this day . . . As do I!!!! . . . Where else could we have this discussion? . . . However, that doesn’t stop my concern with where America has gone and where this Great Nation is going . . . When will we rayne in our corrupt, wasteful, special interest influenced government? . . . Just like you and I, America can’t afford to spend out of our means any longer . . . So like I have said before, batten down them hatches people because a big ones coming our way . . . . Unfortunately, I don’t think most people realize it!!!!!!!!!!!!
It should be interesting to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a what if:
Lets say that OPEC and Venezuala decided they didn't want to sell us anymore oil. What would Obama do in that situation.

Obama wants the troops out. Hey pull then out of everywhere, Korea, Germany. You might as well pull them out of Afghanistan too because al-quaeda won't stay there after we pull them out of Iraq. Iraq is where they will go. If the defense budget gets cut by 25% you won't have enough to pay them anyway.

Good to see you here again. You know how it goes. You can lead them to the truth but you can't make them drink it in. Life is simple..Choices and consequences. They will have to live with their choice. I'm all set. What money I do have is not in the bank anymore. My bills are paid including our house. So let it come. We were able to do that on less than 50,000 a year too. Sounds like they can't even manage on 250,000

To highoaksdrifter: Have you stopped to notice that people "living in poverty" today have it a whole lot easier than those living in poverty 100 years ago?
Today you've got people on welfare who have cable and a big-screen plasma TV. You've got people on food stamps who have a home and a car.
Poverty today isn't what it used to be. Many people from third world countries would like nothing more than to live in what we consider poverty.

You will find that Republicans can take defeat. We will weather the storm of an Obama regime. The question is when your taxes start going up higher and higher, when defense spending is cut and new terror attacks start will you be able to take it. I can't wait to see you here then with no one to blame but yourselves. Should be interesting.

I really don't think you get the big picture Blue . . . You like a number of Americans can’t see the forest through the trees . . . This mess wasn't caused by 6 years of Republicans being in office . . . it has taken decades and abuses by both parties to get us to where we are today . . . And it isn’t going away overnight . . . In fact it isn’t going to be easy for most of us working American’s . . . However, one thing is for certain - both you and I are going to have to pay for it out of our pockets . . . .
Just because I’m wondering, how can you actually support the Democratic “Spread The Wealth” agenda? . . . As a means of paying for the last 60 years of perverse government financial miss-management and graft? . . . Are you ready to pay your share? . . . Then get ready and don't expect any Vaseline . . . because we are about to get screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . . . Especially if Mr. Smile but lies through his teeth . . . That man speaks with forked tong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . . . .
Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Billiary Clinton, Di Fi, Bounce’m Barbara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, and the list goes on of corrupt Democrats . . . Why do you think congress has a lower approval rating than George Bush himself . . . They are all a bunch of lame ducks and crooks . . . . But remember this Blue you’ll get what you pay for – and I’ll be the first to remind you of your waited vote . . . I wish you well in your financial pursuit – just don’t come knocking on the doors of hard working middle-class Americans to pay for your pipe dream . . . Oh and what are you smoking?

What I find amazing is that republicans cannot understand how everyone else in the country is getting it so wrong. I mean really, after the last 8 years of everything being like Disney Land with an un-justified pre-emptive war in Iraq, an under funded and forgotten war in Afghanistan against who really perpetrated 9-11, an economy in shambles thru conservative de-regulation every-man-for-himself economic policies, millions living in poverty and millions more living without health care...the list is endless. And the 'Me First' party wonders why they're going down in flames? Don't touch my money. Don't regulate my business. Don't question my religion. Don't second guess my patriotism. Country First...what a joke. People aren't buying your talk radio talking points anymore.

To Blue: You're operating under the illusion that Democrats aren't at least equally to blame for all the ills that plague our country. I don't think Democrats could, or would fix this country no matter how many years they're given.
Until enough people in the general population get angry and decide to get involved in correcting our government, you're not going to see an ounce of change.
And the average American these days is content to go through life in complete ignorance to what goes on in Washington because its depressing and takes time away from watching their favorite TV shows.
So if you think Democrats are "agents of change" you're sadly mistaken. And when the Democrats fail, AND THEY WILL, don't blame it on the Republicans. This time the blame will rest solely on the shoulders of the Democrats and you'll have no one else to point fingers at.

Wait...an issue not being discussed by the Obama campaign? In virtually every speech he gives, he always mentions supporting other Dems down the ticket. What political campaign have you been following? Funny how McCain fears 1 party rule, but apparently is okay with how badly the GOP had screwed things up under their 1 party rule. Nothing was ever said then by him.

re" 'you're in for a big shock if you think the national nightmare is coming to an end...'
I'll almost agree with you here, but for a different reason,.. it will take the Dems a long time to even make a dent what is being left to them since 2000.
The Dems will be able to fix anything 'overnight'..it will take years for them to accomplish that goal....
