New Obama TV Ad Hits McCain for Trying to Change the Subject
October 07, 2008 7:12 AM
It's called "Subject" and it's all the stronger for that ill-conceived quote an unnamed McCain senior adviser gave the New York Daily News.
The script reads:
ANNOUNCER: He’s out of ideas. Out of touch. And running out of time. But with no plan to lift our economy up, John McCain wants to tear Barack Obama down. With smears that have been proven false.
"Why? McCain’s own campaign admits that if the election is about the economy, he’s going to lose.
(shows New York Daily News quote from yesterday: "If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we’re going to lose")
"But as Americans lose their jobs, homes and savings, it’s time for a president who’ll change the economy. Not change the subject."

The entire story from the McCain/Palin campaign. Vote Obama....
McCain and Palin condone the worst Obama smears with deafening silence.
John "Country Last" McCain and Sarah Palin held some truly hate filled rallies on Monday. Here's a montage from McCain's hatefest 2008
During this rally, a McCain supporter answers the question posed by Senator Country Last, "Who is the real Barack Obama?" The unmistakable answer: terrorist!
McCain says nothing.
From The Washington Post and AmericaBlog on Palin's rally:
"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.
"Boooo!" said the crowd.
"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.
"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.
"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.
Palin went on to say that "Obama held one of the first meetings of his political career in Bill Ayers's living room, and they've worked together on various projects in Chicago."
Palin says nothing.
I understand why McCain and Palin are going negative. The economy is falling apart around us, and they have no solutions. They are losing in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Virginia. Obama, despite McCain's repeated claims, understands what a surge is, because he's pulling one off right now.
But the current political environment does not excuse remaining silent when a candidate for president is referred to as a "terrorist" in your presence. A desire to win does not excuse remaining silent during a threat on the life of a U.S. Senator at one of your rallies. There are no excuses for evil such as this. John McCain and Sarah Palin, the GOP and all who support them have lost all rights to legitimate argument. They are liars. They are wrong. They are evil. Yes, evil. They are one small step short of inciting violence at their rallies. They are letting physical threats go unchallenged.
I was at Obama's rally at Independence Square in Philadelphia back in April. When he mentioned Hillary Clinton's name, the crowd booed, and he told them to stop. Barack Obama intervened when his supporters booed his opponent. He called for civility. Yet, when faced with supporters who label senators terrorists and call for their assassination, John McCain and Sarah Palin said nothing.
This is how evil spreads, from domestic violence to genocide. People in a position to stop it choose to do nothing.
John McCain is obsessed with his own honor. No one believes in the myth of the maverick as thoroughly as he does. He's called for civility in campaign tactics while lying about Obama's position on sex education. That's ok. It's politics. If he weren't a bit of a hypocrite, I would get suspicious. But the man who would make his name synonymous with honor stoked hatred in his rally today and let one of his senate colleagues be referred to as a terrorist.
We know what America does to terrorists.
And while Obama and William Ayers served on a board together, this is nothing like McCain's pro-terrorist history. He voted repeatedly to protect domestic terrorists who bomb abortion clinics. He counts as an "old friend" one G. Gordon Liddy, an ex-convict who served time for the Watergate break-in, plotted to kill journalists, firebomb a think tank and called for violent resistance against the U.S. government. While Obama and Ayers's relationship is minimal and old news, McCain was on Liddy's show this year during the campaign and has accepted $1,000 from him as recently as February. So who's the terrorist?
Now to Sarah Palin.
This simple-minded, overwhelmed, frightened, delusional nitwit thinks she's doing "big things" by going on "the attack." She presumes to challenge Obama at his level as if she had earned her position rather than having been selected by an old white man for the job. She is filled with pride and self-adoration. She is a fool.
This weekend, she said Obama was "paling around with terrorists." (a lie debunked by CNN). The irony is almost crippling to my mental functions. This is from the woman whose church says terrorism vs. Israel is God's judgment. This is a woman who was so close to the radical, separatist Alaska Independence Party, that people thought she was a member. She spoke to their convention, and her husband was a seven-year member of this organization whose founder was killed in a "plastic explosives deal gone bad."
Palin would know about "paling around with terrorists." She fornicates with one.
A few weeks ago CPL posted a story which seemed plausible but couldn't be verified. It said Palin was a racist. While the specific truth of that story is still unsettled, the pattern is clear: this ticket is painting Obama as the "other" and someone to be feared. This campaign is counting on stoking prejudice and racism. The McCain-Palin campaign is grotesque and dangerous. They are picking up where Hillary left off, but have gone much, much farther. They are presiding over hate rallies where people feel free to yell out murderous threats, and the candidates smile it off and keep going, essentially endorsing such mob mentality.
I want to know who still supports this ticket. I want to know because if anything should happen to Barack Obama. If he so much as slips on the jetway or stubs his toe playing basketball, I'm holding John McCain and Sarah Palin responsible, and I'm holding those who vote for them responsible for doing nothing to stop an atmosphere of violence. Enough is enough.
Those of you who have retained your soul and your senses, I ask you do to the following in response to this insane and hate-filled campaign.
Make sure you are registered to vote. Go to voteforchange.com
Volunteer. The campaign built on hope, rather than hate, needs election poll workers in key states like Virginia and Pennsylvania (big up Voter Suppression Wiki!). We need phone calls from home. Donate money.
Spread the word about McCain and Palin's dangerous beliefs and outlandish hypocrisies. Send these to your undecided or right-leaning friends in swing states.
Pray, meditate or otherwise send positive vibes to protect Obama and our country from these forces of darkness masquerading as legitimate political candidates.
Don't be one of those people that recognizes wrong and evil and does nothing to stop it. We are all responsible for creating the world we want to see. Let's go about doing that.
Please vote Obama, we need dignity and change.

What's sad about this is that when this kind of gutter campaign might have been effective, McCain seemed to be running honorably.
Now that it's too late to define Obama, McCain gives in and throws his honor away in a last ditch hope at the presidency. McCain said himself in his autobiography of 2002, that the reason he ran in 2000 wasn't for the good of the country, but out of personal ambition. Too bad he didn't change that view in the meantime, because his latest sleaze is definitely NOT for the good of the country.
I hope McCain can apologize, recoup some dignity and lose gracefully. America would like their hero back. All he needs to do is read his campaign signs and put "Country First"

It is very interesting that in the economic times we are dealing with, the McCain campaign chose this specific time to bring up William Ayers. What is most insteresting is that when his campaign and the Obama campain were running close in the election, this wasn't brought up. To call into question Obama's judgement is ok, but to do so when your opponent has opened up their biggest lead is suspicious.
Posted by: theword | Oct 7, 2008 3:45:26 PM
Good ad by Obama. McCain is out of touch and out of his mind. Erratic, impulsive, and gross lack of judgement.

ml said "Obama is not merely associated with domestic terrorists, Palestinian radicals, Marxists, and black liberation ideologues".
And I wonder who the American Nazi and Ku Klux Klan is their candidate right not. Hint: It is probably someone in a dress who finds ignorance is bliss...
Your argument is pointless.

Obama should also start running all the McCain quotes about not running a negative campaign. McCain has proven that he is nothing more than a shameless politician.

"The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should," - McCain
"I don’t believe we’re headed into a recession. I believe the fundamentals of this economy are strong and I believe they will remain strong." - McCain
"It's easy for me to go to Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have," McCain said at the president forum
McCain IS The fundamental Great Deregulator - He said: " I’m glad I deregulated Wall Street." In 1999, McCain was one of the senators who helped pass deregulation of Wall Street. When asked if he regrets that now, his answer was: "No. I think the deregulation was probably helpful to the growth of our economy."

It's time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin, instead vote for change. It's time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president !
Obama-Biden are the wiser and stronger team to solve the crucial challenges we have in this nation and abroad !
-When looking at McCain you clearly see his poor old wife who suffered hardly from arrogance and erratic judgments & behaviors of McCain on her;
-IN McCain, alot of countless 'out of touch' issues including:
-like a walking temper tantrum.
-he married a heiress.
-he has so many houses, he's lost count.
-and has 13 cars.
-and feels he DESERVES the presidency and resents having to even run a campaign!
-"talk about the Economy, we will loose!" That is because they have no good ideas on the economy for the Middle Class. Their ideas and solutions only benefit the rich, well-off and well-connected!

Did you know that John McCain spent a number of years in the 1960s consorting with card carrying members of the Communist Party, sworn enemies of the United States?
The above statement is 'true' (even though the Communists in question were Vietnamese prison guards), but it says as much about McCain's character as the Ayers 'association' has to do with Obama's.

Obama denies he knew about Wright and his hate messages, after sitting in the pew for twenty years; now, after ten years or so, he denies he knew about Ayers' being a terrorist, even though every American knew who he was. Do you really want a President who is completely oblivious to his surroundings; we may find him wandering around in Iran one day with the explanation, I didn't know I was in Iran. Think about it. And he says McCain is "out of touch". What a laugh.

right on jake,
this is the ad that needs to run non stop.
I was and is a hillary clinton supporter.
BUT
since the choice for president is now between barack obama and john mccain,
I must go with obama.
of course, mccain and palin want to change the subject, it is mccain close buddy george bush and his crew, and on bushes watch, with mccain right beside him, that helped create this mess.
yes, there are many others to blame for this economic mess, but the one who sits in the oval office is the one who owns it, and it is george bushes face that goes on this failed economy. and john mccain was right there with him.
john mccain does not have anything to say on the economy because george bush and his crew have already said it for him.
reporter: sen. mccain what are your comments about this economic mess?
mccain: the economy is sound, and I agree with president bush.
mccain in lock step with george bush.
sarah palin a heartbeat away from the presidency and she wants to be just like cheney.
mccain/palin-country first? please.
will do and say anything to try to win.

“American business, typically a reliable Republican cheerleader, is decidedly lukewarm” about John McCain’s health care proposals. Specifically, groups believe that McCain’s plan, “which eliminates the exclusion of health benefits from income taxes, would accelerate the erosion of employer-sponsored health insurance and do little to reduce the number of uninsured from 45 million.”

James Fallows:
"In the short term, a worldwide financial panic and crisis. Just beyond that, the real economic and social problems that come when large numbers of people lose their jobs, their businesses, their investments, their homes, and even larger numbers become fearful about what might happen to them. And then, when we get a minute to think, profound global energy and environmental challenges, security concerns that range from loose nukes to terrorist organizations, plus a couple of ongoing wars and ever-rising medical costs. Just as starters. The United States is still incredibly rich, powerful, and productive. But the current situation is no joke, for America or the world.
In these circumstances, and with a presidential election four weeks away, is it conceivable that candidates will waste time arguing whether one of them has been in the same room with a guy who had been a violent extremist at a time before most of today's U.S. citizens were even born? (William Ayres was a Weatherman in the late 1960s. Today's median-aged American was born around 1972.) Of course, it's not only conceivable: it's the Republican plan for this final push -- "turning the page" on economic concerns and getting to these "character" and "association" questions about Barack Obama.
Grow up. If John McCain has a better set of plans to deal with the immediate crisis, and the medium-term real-economy fallout, and the real global problems of the era -- fine, let him win on those. But it is beneath the dignity he had as a Naval officer to wallow in this mindless BS. I will say nothing about the dignity of a candidate who repeatedly winks at the public, Hooters-waitress style. A great country acts great when it matters. This is a time when it matters -- for politicians in the points they raise, for journalists in the subjects they write about and the questions they ask of candidates. And, yes, for voters."

Palins May Owe Tens of Thousands of Dollars in Back Taxes
When Sarah Palin accepted John McCain's offer to be his running mate, she probably didn't fully realize what being in the national spotlight meant. For example, your tax returns get to be analyzed in public (for free) by miscellaneous tax experts. Gov. Palin actually lives in Wasilla, a suburb of Anchorage, but the state capital is in Juneau, 500 miles away as the crow flies (assuming they have crows in Alaska). On the many nights she stayed at home, she claimed to have been away from the capital on business and was reimbursed $17,000 by the state for this "travel." Being paid a per diem for staying in your own home is ethically dicey but probably legal since "away on business" is probably defined as "not near your office." However, Palin was also paid $25,000 to reimburse her husband and children for being away from "home" (Juneau) which she did not list as income. A D.C. tax lawyer and two law school professors specializing in tax law have concluded that if the State of Alaska wants to pay the governor to take her family on "business trips" that is its good right, but the money received is taxable income under the internal revenue code and the Palins should have declared it and paid tax on it, which they did not.

It's hard to imagine why anyone would think that Obama will help solve economic issues. He didn't help his constituents in South Chicago. He hasn't put forth any plan to help the poor, which are soon to be joined by millions of currently middle class persons. He hasn't presented a plan for how to get the economy rolling. He just voted, like McCain, to have tax payers bail out Wall Street crooks. We'll be on the hook for this for year. His new commercial says he's not going to do anything to change health care, and that's not the only promise he's backed-off from. I keep wondering, who are all these people who will vote for someone they don't know, and don't even seem to wonder about? Just because of the way he looks?

Bring your buckets, free oil!
Hurricane Ike's winds and massive waves destroyed oil platforms, tossed storage tanks and punctured pipelines. The environmental damage only now is becoming apparent: At least a half million gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico and the marshes, bayous and bays of Louisiana and Texas, according to an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press. ... In the days before and after the deadly storm, companies and residents reported at least 448 releases of oil, gasoline and dozens of other substances into the air and water and onto the ground in Louisiana and Texas.

Business unimpressed with McCain health care plan
Oh boy, better look out for yet another erratic stunt by McCain. Even his business supporters aren't impressed with the McCain health care plan that will cost even more and do nothing to help the uninsured. Does anyone even care about "tax credits" anymore? That has to be the oldest trick in the book in Washington because it does so little to even impact taxes, unless maybe you're worth hundreds of millions and have the serious tax credits. What good is a stingy $5,000 tax credit when family coverage is over $12,000 per year? Only an aloof millionaire sitting on a dozen houses and teams of attorneys and tax accountants would think this plan is good for regular families.
Over the weekend, Mr. Obama more accurately characterized the McCain plan as a swap but one that would work to the detriment of millions. Middle-class families, he said, would “watch the system they rely on begin to unravel before their eyes.”
The business leaders said that was also their fear. Despite steady declines this decade, employers still provide coverage to 62 percent of Americans younger than 65. Surveys show that they want to continue doing so to attract and maintain a productive workforce.
The business leaders forecast that Mr. McCain’s free-market approach would impose particular burdens on small businesses and old-line manufacturers that are already struggling.
“To some in the business community, this is very discomforting,” said R. Bruce Josten, executive vice president for government affairs at the Chamber of Commerce. “The private marketplace, in my opinion, is ill prepared today with an infrastructure for an individual-based health insurance system.”

MEDIA: I am very disturbed by a pattern taking shape in the past few days. How about investigating how using race - the subtle and not so subtle language used to incite raging hatred is being used in this election????
The language, it's like a page straight from the Nazis to a tee. Palin and McCain are inciting hatred at these rallies; it's disgusting. And we wonder when we turn on the television and see in some countries ranting crowds of lunatics - well, this is how it begins!
McCain and Palin are encouraging this and doing nothing to correct it or stop it.
Don't you think you have a responsibiity to report/discuss something this serious? This is what is on television in America. One viewer's account:
"I turned the sound off when McCain began his rant. I looked up at one point to see if he was done and saw his face contorted in such hate and nastiness.
I heard later that a man yelled out terrorist about Obama and during Palin's rally someone yelled Kill him!
They have gone too far and are inciting something scary and ugly in these ignorant supporters of theirs."
Letting things like this get a "pass" is what happens when a country turns around later and wonders how come they are living under a wing nut regime.

From the Wall Street Journal, no less:
John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs....
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Sen. McCain's senior policy adviser, said Sunday that the campaign has always planned to fund the tax credits, in part, with savings from Medicare and Medicaid. Those government health-care programs serve seniors, poor families and the disabled.

Let's hope if John McCain becomes president that Al Qaeda doesn't decide to strike on a weekend. That's his time off. - John Avarosis
More from Politico:
After a rigorous primary election schedule, the Arizona senator was "down" on nearly every Saturday and Sunday between the time he clinched the nomination in February and June, Politico reported this summer. And since accepting his party’s nomination on Sept. 4, McCain has taken off at least one day each weekend. He held no public events last weekend, and will keep the same schedule this weekend.
Obama, on the other hand, has taken only two weekend days off in the last month.

Guilt by association will not work, has not worked this year. What the Wingnuts and the McCain campaign don't understand is that the country has changed and progressed in some aspects. For those of us who want to know the real truth about Obama, here is a good article, the rest of it is on NRO online, thank you Mr. Levin.
The Obama Fan-Dance Must End [Mark R. Levin]
As someone who has written critically of John McCain on a host of issues, including the Keating Five, none of it compares to the life that Barack Obama has led and his belief system. Obama is not merely associated with domestic terrorists, Palestinian radicals, Marxists, and black liberation ideologues — he was their favorite candidate. They groomed him. They befriended him. He befriended them. He socialized with them. In other words, these people saw Obama as representing their views and aspirations and he saw them the same way. I am not among those who raise Obama's associations but add "of course, it doesn't mean Obama shares their views." Oh really? These miscreants include Obama's former pastor, political mentors and allies, and friends. Obama attempts to downplay and distance himself from his own circle of allies now that he is running for president. But he is one of them. Obama is getting a pass that no other candidate in my memory has ever received.
I tried to post this comment many times on ABC but they will not publish it. Just testament to what I think is a shameful attempt to win the election for Obama.
Shame on you ABC.
