Obama Attacks McCain on Medicare
October 17, 2008 2:55 PM
ROANOKE, Va. -- Teeing off a Wall Street Journal story from earlier this month, suggesting that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., intends to make cuts in Medicare, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., today launched an aggressive attack on McCain in the hopes of appealing to seniors.
"The Wall Street Journal recently reported that ... Sen. McCain would pay for part of his plan by making drastic cuts in Medicare -– $882 billion worth," Obama told a crowd of more than 8,000 in Roanoke, Va., today.
"$882 billion in Medicare cuts to pay for an ill-conceived, badly thought through health care plan that won't provide more health care to people, even though Medicare is already facing a looming shortfall. Now, this should come as no surprise –- it's entirely consistent with Sen. McCain's record during his 26 years in Congress where, time and again, he's opposed Medicare. In fact, Sen. McCain has voted against protecting Medicare 40 times. Forty times, he's failed to stand up for Medicare."
The Journal story said that, according to McCain adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain "would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs. ... Mr. Holtz-Eakin said the Medicare and Medicaid changes would improve the programs and eliminate fraud, but he didn't detail where the cuts would come from. 'It's about giving them the benefit package that has been promised to them by law at lower cost,' he said."
Obama said this would mean "a cut of more than 20 percent in Medicare benefits next year. If you count on Medicare, it would mean fewer places to get care, and less freedom to choose your own doctors. You'll pay more for your drugs, you'll receive fewer services, you'll get lower quality care. I don't think that's right. In fact, it ain't right. When you've worked hard your whole life, and paid into the system, and done everything right, you shouldn't have the carpet pulled out from under you when you least expect it and can least afford it."
Why would Obama launch this attack with 18 days left to go before the election?
Simple: Seniors vote in disproportionately large numbers.
Moreover: the four states with the largest proportions of seniors as a percentage of the population are all in contention -- in order: Florida, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Iowa.
In addition to the new stump speech attack, Obama today launched a new TV ad attacking McCain on the subject.
In response, McCain campaign spox Tucker Bounds issued a statement saying, “Unlike Barack Obama’s risky plan, John McCain’s plans for health care do not punish struggling businesses with fines and taxes, and they certainly do not cut a single benefit for Medicare or Medicaid –- Obama is simply lying. It’s absurd for Barack Obama to label John McCain’s plans to trim spending for Medicare and Medicaid as ‘drastic cuts,’ only to then say that his own plans to make cuts will ‘strengthen’ those programs. For Barack Obama to talk about the hope of America and then proceed into misleading and hypocritical accusations only underscores what voters already know: Barack Obama is not who you think he is.”
-- Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller
UPDATE: Though he wouldn't apparently specify the cuts to the WSJ, Holtz-Eakin is now detailing the savings in Medicare McCain would pursue.
They include:
* Payment reform from current fragmented and volume-based service to one that rewards coordinated and quality focused care;
* Elimination of Medicare fraud and abuse;
* Making sure drug premiums for the wealthiest Americans are not being subsidized by the middle class;
* Promotion of a new generation of treatment models that better manage chronic care conditions while rewarding prevention and wellness;
* Greater use of Health IT and medical homes to promote greater co-ordination of care; and
* Reduction of drug costs by allowing greater use of generics (including bio-generics).
The McCain campaign points out that several of these are also Obama proposals and says, "Only the liberal media and the Obama campaign would characterize similar proposals as 'savings' in their plan and 'cutting benefits, eligibility or both' in the McCain plan."

Donoke9_10, Sen. Obama is nothing more than just another--same ol', same ol'--liberal Democrat. Back in 1996 the Democrats twisted Newt Gingrich's words--"the Medicare bureaucracy would wither on the vine"--into Medicare benefits would wither on the vine. And it worked well. I don't believe the seniors will fall for the same ol' lie again!
But it does prove that "The One" is really just "another one" of the good ol' liberals.

It's hard to believe that a supposedly intelligent Ivy-League-educated person could twist facts and shamelessly lie just to get votes.
Obama is lying and scaring senior citizens just to win the election.
His claim is already disputed by an analysis from news correspondent Wyatt Andrews (CBS) as an Obama whopper.
Fact: McCain plans to offset the costs of his health care plan with savings from improvements in several aspects of Medicare, such as reforming payments toward a disease management model instead of fee-for-service, adopting electronic health records to reduce fraud, adjusting the Medicare drug benefits for affluent seniors.
It doesn't constitute the "$882 billion cuts" that Obama is falsely stating.

All you ever needed to know about Obama's political aspirations and plan is described in Saul Alinsky's philosphy and strategy in 'organizing', you know the guy who Obama said influenced him more than anyone else.
This nation is primed for Obama's strategy. I'm not going to say to be scared. Read it for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

This is what worries me most about Obama. He lies right to your face and it doesn't seem to bother him in the least. He has several ads on Florida TV talking about how McCain is going to cut Medicare for seniors and take away health care for Americans. So, I went to the McCain website to look up McCain's plan for myself. Looks like a good plan for providing insurance options (there is currently 1 provider in my area, and I am at their mercy as far as the cost of premiums and plans and choice of doctors)and creating a competitive market to drive insurance costs down. I wouldn't mind being able to shop around for a better health care plan. All I can say is the Obama ads are out-and-out lies. This is why I will not vote for him. He doesn't seem to have a conscience. I honestly believe he is a pathological liar. Think about his denials of knowing what Rev. Wright was saying in his sermons. Think about his answer in the last debate about his connection to Bill Ayers. I mean, I would have respected the man more if he would have said, "Yeah, I was at Ayers house for a fundraiser, but I didn't realize at the time who he was, etc." Nope, all Obama mentioned was serving on a board with Ayers. Why not just tell the whole story? What is Obama trying to hide? How about Obama saying he would take public campapign money for the election if the other side did the same and then backing out of that agreement once McCain agreed to take public financing for the election? I worry about what international agreements Obama will back out of after he gets the other side to agree to certain conditions. He reminds me of the jerk who reaches out to shake your hand and when you extend your hand toward his hand, he pulls his hand away, smooths back this hair, and says, "Sucker."

Our most cherished right as an American citizen is the right to vote. That right to vote and the entire election process is what millions of our bravest citizens have fought and died for throughout our history. When one part of the election process loses its integrity the entire process is undermined. Those who consider voter registration fraud as no big deal, show little respect for the election process? And that is like spitting in the face of the men and women who have died for your right to vote.

Ryan C,
"John McCain will tax your health benefits as income if provided by your employer. That's a tax increase on 50% of the people who have insurance."
I would like to know if medicare benefits will be taxed.

Dee,
I finally heard a guest on CNN's Larry King ask about the McCain's "pal" G. Gordon Liddy and Palin's "palling around" with the AIP. Finally!
On the topic of medicare, I wouldn't be surprised if McCain and Palin's reforms are based on the "make them work til they're 100" mentality. They don't get it that older Americans don't need to have the rug pulled out from under them. Once McCain cuts their benefits, the older Americans will have to be subsidized by their children -- most of whom are also struggling in this rotten economy.
Obama's plan is much better for seniors. Cut the costs, not the benefits!

tinyurl:
"He has to have an increase in tax or reduce benefits."
Why does he?
Obama doesn't and you're perfectly ok with HIM following that crazy premise!
What's fair for B O... should be equally fair for McCain..
This IS a Democracy, (still).
Right?

Cheetah, are you seriously concerned about the donut hole? because before Bush passed the medicare prescription plan, the seniors would have been paying for all the drugs themselves, not just prescription copays while they are in the donut hole. Or am I missing something here?
McCain has done nothing to instill fear of homelessness in seniors. in fact, many of his economic ideas are geared toward seniors, like lowering taxes on ira/401k withdrawals and allowing seniors to skip making withdrawals that would force them to sell at a loss. He has a solid record of support for senior issues.

I don't trust anything from the McCain and Palin bunch. Medicare is having enough problems without them cutting more of it to leave the seniors almost homeless from having to pay out thousands in prescription copays because of the "donut" in the part D plan. We can not afford another 4-8 years of hate and greed. Vote for Obama!

McCain said he planned to reduce both Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in early July 2008. Since then McCain's answer for social security is he will work across the isle with Democrats to fix the problem.
McCain has gone back and forth on a tax increase for social security, the last was no increase. He has to have an increase in tax or reduce benefits.
Skepticism on McCain Plan to Balance Budget by 2013
McCain said he would also slow the growth of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and fiscal experts agree that he would need to do that to achieve his goal.
But McCain did not give details of how he would alter those benefit programs, which have powerful constituencies, including older Americans, a huge health care industry and state and local government officials

If it's midOctober, it must be time for Democrats to start spreading the lie that Republicans plan to take away seniors' social security and medicare. It happens every election cycle. Do they think that seniors aren't smart enough to notice that ss and medicare are still going strong? Obama should be ashamed-- I seem to recall him insisting that he was a "different" kind of politician. This is the same old same old, if you ask me. There is nothing new and different about Barack Obama.

"Wake up Seniors... I S about fear and smear.'
And it's all done with mirrors and a tall,by a suave politician who's learned how to speak out of both sides of his face....abd who make big promises while crossing his fingers.
McCain and Palin's suggestions for change to the system, are re cited below:
They will be welcome ones: doctors who have lost patience with the way they have been paid and thus dropped out of the program hopefully will return.
"Payment reform from current fragmented and volume-based service to one that rewards coordinated and quality focused care;
* Elimination of Medicare fraud and abuse;
* Making sure drug premiums for the wealthiest Americans are not being subsidized by the middle class;
* Promotion of a new generation of treatment models that better manage chronic care conditions while rewarding prevention and wellness;
* Greater use of Health IT and medical homes to promote greater co-ordination of care; and
* Reduction of drug costs by allowing greater use of generics (including bio-generics).

"Only the liberal media and the Obama campaign would characterize similar proposals as 'savings' in their plan and 'cutting benefits, eligibility or both'
Viva McCain and Palin!
COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY.

It's nice to have one campaign focused on the issues. McCain is too busy with false character assaults to tell us about his vision for our country.
Posted by: Sigh | Oct 17, 2008 3:04:21 PM
McCain has no vision for our country, hence, all we get from him and his sidekick Palin are lies and distortions and attacks. All of which are signs of a campaign that is completely bankrupt.

Don't praise medicare until you've had to use it..... and find that in one swell foop the medical arena from whence you get to pick the surgeon of your choice... has drastically shrunk.
Medicare was NEVER the cat's meow... but the addition of "D" and the dreaded drug doughnut....has just about done it in.
And why would Obama care anyways?
His Health care plant pales compared to Hillary's!
Besides,he's covered for life under the Congressional Health Plan....
I would be sorely tempted to vote for anyone who could drop THAT at my doorstep, providing his or her life were an open book in regard to associations, education, passports, birth certificates, and international dealings.
SXo, I guess that's another
NO NO B O!

Read the CBS report on this subject; they say Obama lied about this. Could not believe that CBS, the liberalist of the liberals, would report a negative about Obama.
Posted by: TellTheTruth | Oct 17, 2008 7:37:05 PM
Even the most liberal media in America has an article on this, calling it the biggest blopped by Obama of the campaign. Could not believe that this ultra liberal national TV station made such a statement, very unusual.
Obama lied all the time. He lies about his past (had a communist mentor which is not being reported, Frank Marshall Davis, Obama wrote about his great relationship in his book; Obama lies about his past ties to extremist; he lies about his platform of what he wants for American (he's drastically changed what he said a year ago which was radical to what he is saying today, but he is only saying what he'll do now because he knows his radical ideas will get few votes. What else has he lied about? So many things; he has brainwashed the Americans so do not complain in a couple of years when the government is ruling your lives. You reap what ye sow.
Posted by: Common Sense | Oct 17, 2008 7:33:28 PM
It would truly be a terrible moment in our nation's history if McCain and Palin were to be elected on their platform of hate and lies. There was a time I had some respect for McCain. But he has completely lost my respect. In fact I must have been mistaken all along to think that he had any honor. If he becomes president I will still have no respect for him. But even worse if he becomes president it will show the world that the days of an inspiring America are over. If he becomes president the world will see that America is ruled by hate, fear and bigotry and that every other country had better be afraid because a hate filled, angry old man and his ill-informed religious fundamentalist vp will be in charge and they are erratic and filled with negativity. In fact negativity is their platform.

nanameow, the seniors I know are in the same boat as you are. They need to pay out of pocket for supplemental insurance because Medicare doesn't cover everything. If McCain strips it further how can that help seniors? It will only drive up the price of their supplemental insurance.
The idea that any American is without good health insurance should bother all of us. No one should be losing their house because of medical bills, no one should have to choose between buying medicine or buying food, no one should be turned down for coverage because of pre-existing conditions.
Posted by: Lydia | Oct 17, 2008 5:52:01 PM
More scare tactics from the left. They said Bush would do the same thing and he actually increased medicare benefits.
The left reeks of desperation.
