Obama: McCain's Tactics ‘Getting So Bad’ Even Palin's Denouncing Them

October 20, 2008 1:37 PM

TAMPA, FLA -- Denouncing the "say anything, do anything" politics he says Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is using against him, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill, condemned the "ugly phone calls, misleading mail, misleading TV ads, careless outrageous comments" coming from the McCain-Palin campaign and the Republican party.

"It's getting so bad that even Sen. McCain's running mate denounced his tactics last night," Obama said to a crowd at Steinbrenner Field. "And you know, you really have to work hard to violate Governor Palin's standards on negative campaigning. You gotta work hard."

Obama was referring to comments Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made last night when asked about the negative McCain-Palin Campaign/Republican National Committee robocalls being blasted throughout various battleground states.

Palin said, per ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala, "If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand, I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls and includes spending so much money on the television ads that I think is kinda draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span. They get a bit irritated with just being inundated, and you're seeing a lot of that of course with the huge amounts of money that Barack Obama is able to spend on his ads and his robocalls also."

Although this is a bit off topic, someone mentioned Powell in their harangue. I wondered how long it would take for right wing haters to start smearing their former hero, Colin Powell. Despite all the praise they heaped upon him, as soon as he disagrees with them the inquisition begins. Powell is not a flawless person, as attested to by his UN speech, but he was one of your soldier-saints. Your "I never did like the man ..." bs is disgusting to witness.

Yes, let's let it all hang out. Did anyone really expect any less from a flip-flopping McCain who sides with whoever has the momentum at the time and a no-name small town, small-minded mayor who administrated in a place that doesn't even have a fire department or school district? I'm relatively certain my 8-year-old daughter could manage that gig with equitable effectiveness.

Brooklyn Democrat,

Ever read 1984 by George Orwell? (: Perhaps McCain and Palin are using doublethink. That would explain alot.

Obama started this by questioning McCain's honor as soon as McCain passed him in the polls. In fact, Obama got down and dirty during the primary by calling Bill Clinton a racist. This is the tone Obama has started, so I say let it all hang out.

Wait...it gets stranger. First, the McCain campaign tried to claim that she really hadn't said what she'd said. Then, it came out that she herself had taped a robobcall which is currently going out.

Do these people lie deliberately or can they simply not remember what they've said from one moment to the next?

Was this supposed to somehow pass for journalism? John McCain has now proven himself to be a coward hiding behind women while they do HIS dirty work. The time has come to ask Sarah Palin about her connection to the anti-American group, AIP. How is it McCain supporters seem to think its OK to be married to a former member of secessionist group like Palin is, and that this is somehow American? Not to mention the fact that she provided the opening remarks for this same group in 2008 "The AIP was founded by Joe Vogler who said that he had no use for American and her damned institutions and advocated all manner of violence .Tod Palin joined the party in 1995,( 2 years after the founders death) and remained a member until 2002. Sarah Palin has either attended or given addresses to their conventions in 1994, 2000, 2006 and 2008, giving them encouragement and God's blessings. Wanting the State to leave the union sounds like treason to me, so why doesn't the gop bring this up? Now I ask you do you still think this former beauty queen was the most qualified member of the republican party?, and do you honestly believe that McCain has this Countries best interest at heart when he made this nomination? Alaska has a population of less than 700,000 people (less than any major US city) how does having the support of such a tiny populace make her the most popular gov? Palin has not met with Russian leaders or delegations, negotiated any Russian issues or visited the country ;however, she believes she is experienced because she can see the country from her back yard? I have Google earth does this make me qualified too?
John McCain has proven that he only cares about winning this election (regardless of the consequences) and our future would be in the hands of a woman who is frankly an insult to strong female leaders the world over (if his 72 year old heart gives out) I myself am a decorated white male Vietnam war veteran, and have always voted for the Republican ticket ;however, I am disgusted by what I have seen this election. For the sake of our country (and its reputation) please get beyond this racial division created by the gop ticket and vote for senator Obama,

Now Cindy Sheehan is claiming her campaign against Nancy Pelosi was Sabotaged. HA! The Democrats are doing it to the Democrats. Is nothing sacred with those people. (Tongue in cheek)

Posted by: Carolyn | Oct 21, 2008 1:20:39 AM

Well gosh, didn't Palin say it was the Palin/McCain campaign? The old guy should check with her before he opens his pie hole! Doesn't he know she is running the show?

Sarah is right on. Both candidates are always slamming each other and it does get very old! What I find truly American and ironic is that we all sit around and say how much we hate this type of politics but it is really the only thing that works - trust me they wouldn't do it if it didn't work. Turn the ads off, change the channel, don't talk about them. Paris Hilton is so famous because we're all shallow enough to pick up the magizine of which she graces the covers. I say anyone who denies this is not being totally honest - much like our candidates. Like every political election it is "the lesser of 2 evils", so to speak, and while we have a difficult decision to make the choice is really quite clear. Obama is not ready. Everyone says that Palin could not be our president but I lie awake at night and worry what will become of our great nation if Obama is in charge...shutter the thought!

Posted by: Jen | Oct 20, 2008 11:36:46 PM

Sarah what are you talking about? Obama is not making any robocalls. Puhleeze, please don't try to downplay the ridiculous ploys that the McCain campaign is using and try to make Obama look stupid too. Don't make it sound like he's going as low as the McCain\Palin campaign is going, because that certainly is not at all the case!

Christopher Buckley was forced to resign from the National Review for his negative view of McCAIN. The National Review is a very conservative paper started by Christopher Buckley's father Conservative William F. Buckley.

Concervatives are leaving McCAIN in droves.

To "Ayers was just someone who lives down the street" Obama, is that why you gave a glowing endorsement of his book back in 1997?

Posted by: Linda/Michigan | Oct 20, 2008 8:53:06 PM

-----------------

Probably because it was a good book, written by Professor Ayers, the winner of the Mayor Daley citizen of the year award.

I've seen books with dozens of endorsements from all around the country. In most cases the person doing the endorsement doesn't even know the author.

In any case, this story is about 9 months old. I can see that you get your news from FOX News, who just recycled this to their front page.

Trash journalism at it's finest. Might as well get your news from the National Enquirer.

As far as ACORN is concerned, let's hear all about the McCain supporters' outrage that McCain was a keynote speaker at ACORN in 2006. ---BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING THEIR ATTORNEY AND TEACHING CLASSES ON HOW TO ORGANIZE and being a speaker.

Posted by: Vaszely | Oct 20, 2008 8:58:56 PM

-------------------

This is all BS anyway. There is not one single documented case of voter fraud when it comes to ACORN. That is why McCAIN felt comfortable being their keynote speaker.

Registering Mickey Mouse doesn't mean Mickey Mouse actually goes to the poll and votes. And registering the same name a dozen times doesn't mean that the same guy gets 12 votes.

This is all politics of deception and politics of distraction on the part of the GOP.

But, what is real and has been proven is voter intimidation and voter suppression by the GOP.

Actually Ayers was the best man at Barack and Michelle's wedding, he is the godfather of his two daughters and they play poker together every Friday night. Make you feel any better.

McCAIN was a close personnal friend of G. Gordon Liddy of Water Gate fame. Liddy made statements about shooting Americans, but you know what? I think Liddy is no more relevant than Ayers.

Good Night everyone, May the Best Man Win. And if not and we vote the wrong politician in. Just remember we really are basically on our own and responsible for ourselves. And it is only we ourselves who can better our lives. At least that's what I was brought up on before politicians took so much control of our lives and so many learned to rely on them. I still believe life is what you make of it. Not what a political party makes of it.Ryan C stay cool, your guy may win. Then lets see what happens.

I don't think the McCAIN smears are any more relevant than the Obama smears. I was just trying to make a point that these smears cut both ways.

Obama has stayed above the fray.
