Obama to Pre-emptively Attack McCain

October 05, 2008 7:40 AM

With the news that the McCain campaign is launching a full assault on Obama's associates, preparedness, and judgment in a TV ad campaign to start Wednesday -- as detailed in this morning's Washington Post -- the Obama campaign is planning a pre-emptive assault on the TV airwaves to start Monday.

Gov. Sarah Palin got the ball rolling this morning, going after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for his association with Professor William Ayers, a former member of the radical group the Weather Underground, saying Obama "is someone who sees America it seems as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

The McCain campaign said that its new TV ads would focus on Obama's associations with Ayers and real estate developer Tony Rezko, recently convicted on corruption charges.

"We are looking for a very aggressive last 30 days," McCain adviser Greg Strimple told the Post.  "We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama's aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for Americans."

The Obama campaign plans on taking Strimple's expressed desire to "turn...a page on this financial crisis" against McCain, to characterize all attacks on Obama as desperation to change the subject.

As first reported by Politico's Mike Allen Saturday evening, Obama has a new TV ad, too, that says: "Three quarters of a million jobs lost this year. Our financial system in turmoil. And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy. No wonder his campaign wants to change the subject. 'Turn the page on the financial crisis' by launching dishonorable, dishonest ‘assaults’ against Barack Obama. Struggling families can't turn the page on this economy, and we can't afford another president who is this out of touch."

Whats all of this fuss about Obama wanting to talk to the leaders of countries that refuse to do what we want them to do. If our leaders are to stupid to talk to the leaders of Iran, Cuba, etc, you can be assured that the leaders of Russia will gladly talk to the leaders of these countrys. When Russia arm these countrys with Nuclear bombs, Americans are gonna wish that we had talked to the people. Russia is allready giving missiles to Hugo Chavez, I predict that it wont be much longer before Russia place neclear weapons in Cuba again. Dont talk America but dont complain when the Russians do.

CHARACATER IS SO VERY IMPORTANT IN A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND JUDGEMENT. THEY MAY BE BRINGING UP AYERS AND REZKO NOW, BUT SAVING THE MORE IMPORTANT REV. WRIGHT/OLD UNCLE/MENTOR STUFF FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS IN OCTOBER.

Jane Sixpack....Gov. Palin didn't do pot and I'll take her anyday as VP than a Prez who has no experience and did "blow" as he refers to it in his book and is STILL SMOKING! No strength of character to quit, no strength of character to leave his radical hateful racist church like Oprah did AFTER A YEAR!
OBAMA NOT FIT!!!!!!
McCAIN/PALIN ALL AMERICAN ALL THE WAY!

The reason this discussion has not been followed up on by the media is because it is a non-subject. This Ayers person was a "suspected" terrorist in the 60's. He was never convicted because of FBI misconduct, for all we know he is/was innocent. The only reason Obama knows him is because the worked together on fundraising years after this incident in the 60's which Obama did not know about. By that time Obama only knew him as a respected college professor. Obama was not and is not his friend. Thats like someone saying each of us should be held accountable for the private lives of our co-workers. GIVE ME A BREAK!

No amount of cane-riding wizardry by Sarah Barracuda Palin is going to transform a dim-witted Wasilla High potsmoker turned Alaskan secessionist turned Republican VP nominee into a credible VP candidate.

Great strategy by the McCain camp to energize Obama's larger base against his smaller base. Plus I am sure Independents will be impressed with a man who looks like an old pathetic back stabbing, bitter and desperate loser. To have your unqualified running mate basically call a fellow United State Senator a terrorist is crossing the line.

Kristne,

The media obviously has done a pretty good job checking out Obama for 19 months, hence the Ayers, Wright, Rezno stories, smears and lies that the Republican Party is apparently going to base their last desperate attempt at winning this election on. The problem you see, is that there just isn't much there. The Republicans never say anything new about those associations...just that they're associations. If you really want to know all about Obama, then go to factcheck.org. They've gone over ALL the accusations, lies, truths, half-truths, and smears with a fine tooth comb. But like most Republicans, I suspect you don't have much use for the truth if it doesn't coincide with your vision of what the truth is. As for Hillary, I'll say just this...she's got a closet full of skeletons all her own. So if you think this general elction would have been a cake walk for her guess again. The Republicans would have pulled out every one, and where they couldn't find one, they would have made one up.

Arlan

"change the FACTS about Obama's Criminal background and Lies!"

There is no criminal background, not one criminal conviction or investigation based on HIS actions. Criminal investigations of his associations that involved him as a witness, yes, criminal investigation with his own actions? NO

McCain however, with his Keating 5 scandal and Palin with her troopergate investigation, that is a criminal background.

Posted by: Vahagn Mkhikian | Oct 5, 2008 11:36:52 PM

Oh Im not done.

McCain also cheated on his first wife who was recovering from a car accident. McCain also was involved with Gordon Liddy a terrorist, McCain also said he is unclear whether or not the prime minister of spain is an ally to us, McCain also got into a fistfight with another senator, McCain also voted against funding the troops 3 times last year because it included a time table, McCain also voted to raise taxes 477 times while in Congress, McCain also wanted to privatize social security 3 years ago, that would have led to a near complete collapse of it through this stock market crisis, McCain's tax plan will save his wife an estimated 762,000 a year while providing only a 19 dollar tax cut to those making under 20K a month, McCain also NEVER MENTIONED EXCESSIVE CEO GREED in any stump speech prior to the market crash on Sep 15th, McCain also blocked the Veterans Committee from investigating into the POW files in Vietnam (because he was hiding being known as "songbird mccain" for telling the Vietnamese our secrets), McCain also spearheaded a tactic to try to disenfranchise 250,000 Michigan voters if they were foreclosed upon, McCain also lied about Obama's education, tax, association record, McCain also complains about our largest national debt in history but voted with 80% of President Bush's budget and spending bills

McCain is a horrible man. Obama knows horrible men, take your pick.

It is really sad and telling that Liberal Obama supporters have viciously attack Palin, McCain and their supporters for months in the media-

But now that Obama's Radical past is coming into focus by the mainstream media - Mentors/Friends/Associates and ACORN Community Organizer tactics Liberals cry fowl! Well too bad! It has been a long time coming!

Ayers- Unrepentant Anti-government bomber

Rezco- Chicago Convicted Money Launder and the one Obama did a shaddy deal with to buy his house and land! Obama gave him thousands in state money!

Frank Marshall Davis- Marxist,Communist Mentor of Obama who Obama talks about in his book!

Alinsky- he is dead, however Obama studied his Marxist Socialist "Rules for Radicals" tactics and worked for ACORN in Chicago!

Jeremiah Wright- Racist pastor/mentor for 20 years

I could keep going and add all the muslim friends Obama has! I could see if it was just 1 shaddy friend but there are SO MANY!!!

Obama could NOT even get an FBI clearence with anyone of these associates!

So you can insult McCain and Palin all you want, but it won't change the FACTS about Obama's Criminal background and Lies!

Posted by: Arlan | Oct 5, 2008 11:08:15 PM

Every Republican here is right. Obama's associations should be followed and reviewed...keep beatin at a dead horse guys.

The fact is Ayers is a professor and met Obama as a university professor and doing charity contributions. that's a damn good thing i would say.

Rezko is a convicted felon but every single investigation has proved other than buy a house together, they had nothing to do with each other.

Sounds to me that Obama knew bad guys, he worked with them to get some good stuff accomplished and that's it. You Republicans are foaming at the mouth angry that Obama has no personal scandals. He has friends who have committed scandals but no personal scandals. And as for Reverend Wright and his racism. Give me a break. McCain is a 72 year old white man. If you think McCain has no racist friends you're an idiot. That doesn't make him racist...well he is racist, but it's not cuz of his friends.

Let's now analyze the Republican ticket.

Palin - Wants to break the constitution and change the powers of the vice-presidency, used taxpayer money to help pay her mortgage, hired friends and high school basketball teamates for government positions. Is involved in a blatant breach of power but won't cooperate with the investigation. (A Vice presidential nominee who thinks he doesn't have to cooperate with investigations...seem familiar)?

McCain - The last time we had a huge banking failure, John McCain was involved in a huge scandal (Keating 5). He called Bush's tax cuts "Immoral and downright thievery" and now he supports them to cave into the conservative backers. He got a COMPLETELY unqualified retard who he didn't know and only met once as a VP for pure political reasons. He wrote in a book "I wanted to become president because it had become my ambition to become president. I was 62 at the time and felt it was my last shot at the prize"...Any man who views the presidency as a prize doesn't deserve consideration. Two of his "spiritual and moral leaders" are Chuck Hagee and Rob Parsley. Hagee believes that Catholicism is the great whore religion. He is against the constitution because it allows the right to assembly and believes that God Sends Hurricanes like Katrina to claim thousands of innocent lives and cause trillions in property damage because "America was going to allow a homosexual parade". Pastor Rob Parsley believes it is America's duty and quest to destroy Islam and every able bodied American should fulfill our quest by joining the military and destroying Islam

Barack Obama knows corrupt people. John McCain and Sarah Palin ARE corrupt people

That's your difference.

Posted by: Vahagn Mkhikian | Oct 5, 2008 11:07:15 PM

If the media spent half as much time checking out Obama as they have Palin, then Hillary would be our nominee.

Bill knows that. Hillary knows that and so do most of her supporters, like me. That is why we will vote for McCain.

Posted by: Kristne | Oct 5, 2008 10:33:33 PM

GIVE ME A BREAK! Americans have listen to the Liberal Media trash Sarah Palin for 5 weeks now and try to dig up anything they can on her- even attacking her children!

It's time Americans were given the TRUTH about Obama's Criminal Associates/Friends/Mentors! I'm from Chicago and I can tell you all the radical illegal ACORN tactics Obama used as the "Community Organizer right here in my city! Please research Obama before you vote!

Start with the Breaking News FBI files on "Frank" Marshall Davis - who Obama calls his mentor in his book Dreams of my Father! He has admitted this guy "Frank is this Man!

I can't believe McCain has not brought this up weeks and months before! I can't believe a Radical like Obama has come this close to the White house!

Posted by: Arlan | Oct 5, 2008 10:31:40 PM

Sceptical Republican
"There's no doubt Obama has given many inspiring speeches and has a charming and charismatic personality. But Americans should consider his actions, not just his lofty words. They don't add up."

His actions are honorable, they met each other when he was working in some education commission.
The fact they worked together don't imply that Obama supported his radical idea's in the past.

Posted by: CLabs | Oct 5, 2008 9:59:09 PM

John,
"Watch the SNL Bush/Pelosi/Frank skit while you're watching Burning Down the House too please."

Watched the Burning Down the House, also watched some video that debunked the same message.
The video can be debunked by one simple fact, the trading with mortage packs between banks stared after 2000. It was something new, it didn't happened before.

It was made possible because deregulation and all the banks started to behave like investment banks.
The fact that most of the congress (republicans and democrats) where in the pocket of these financial banks didn't helped a lot.
McCain is no saint, he supported the deregulation that unleashed the wolves.

Posted by: CLabs | Oct 5, 2008 9:44:39 PM

Why is it that Obama's relationships with a convicted felon, a terrorist, and a rabid preacher is off the table for analysis and discussion? The main stream media has spent days and weeks dumpster diving in Wasilla, Alaska, to dig up dirt on Sarah Palin. But Obama gets a free pass on Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko and Reverend Wright.

Let's take Ayers. He was a member of Weather Underground, a domestic terrorist organization that planned attacks on the Pentagon and the Capitol, set off bombs and killed a policeman in San Francisco. Ayers has never apologized for this and in fact said he "didn't do enough".

All this happened while Barack Obama was a child. So there's his defense: "What that man did Barack Obama has condemned. And by the way, he did it when Barack Obama was 8 years old. Come on," Democratic senator McCaskill said.

But consider this: While Obama was a child during the bombings, he was certainly a grown up when he held his first political fund raiser -- in Ayer's private home! What kind of judgment does this show? And where's the "condemnation" McCaskill refers to? Are we supposed to believe that Obama first used Ayers to raise money, then later condemned him?

There is a long chain of bad judgment calls in Obama's political life. He bought his house in a shady real estate deal from a man who was later convicted for fraud and is now in prison. His pastor for 20 years calls for God to "damn America" and claims that white people intentionally inflicted AIDS on blacks. His first fund raiser was held in the house of a terrorist, and he served on the board of an organization founded by this terrorist for years afterwards.

There's no doubt Obama has given many inspiring speeches and has a charming and charismatic personality. But Americans should consider his actions, not just his lofty words. They don't add up.

Boy oh boy, are you Reps. really as dumb as you sound and look. If Mcplain ran out on his first wife for money, picked a fool for running mate, botched the bailout deal merely by his presence, making wild accusations, looking more desperate and foolish by the minuet, showing everyone he is not only a poor leader,a low person,a poor mate, was a poor student,an un-sympathetic husband and one word away from senility. you guys are either blind, drunk or crazy, or all of the above

Posted by: chucky | Oct 5, 2008 8:32:37 PM

So this Ayers guy is a terrorist? And he's running free right here in America? Why is this REPUBLICAN administration not locking up this TERRORIST but letting him go just like they did with bin Laden?!? I'm so sick of these terrorist-loving Republicans! It's time to let Democrats show what they will do.

jB and others: I thank God that George W. Bush has been our president these past 7 2/3 years.

1. It was President Bush's 2001 tax cuts that greatly limited the effects of the 2000-01 recession. Unfortunately just as the economy was rebounding al Qaeda attacked us on 9/11/2001.

2. When al Qaeda attacked us on 9/11/2001, President Bush understand that we were at war with the Islamic extremists and acted decisively by leading a coalition in an air and ground assault on the Taliban and al Qaeda. Unlike his Democratic predecessor who treated them as common criminals when they bombed the World Trade Center in 1993. Unlike when his Democratic predecessor's retaliation for al Qaeda's attack of our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 by bombing a pharmaceutica plant in the Sudan. Unlike when his Democratic predecessor did absolutely nothing when al Qaeda attacked the USS Cole in 2000.

3. President Bush decided 12 years of diplomatically trying to persuade Saddam Hussein to comply with the conditions of the 1991 Gulf War cease fire was long enough. During those twelve years there were hundreds of thousands of Iraqis tortured, murdered and raped. In addition, Saddam Hussein reaped billions of dollars through his oil-for-food scheme, which left millions of Iraqis poor and starving. So President Bush rescinded the cease fire and lead a coalition to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein.

4. It was President Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts that turned our economy around following the attacks and the corporate scandals of 2002. Not only did we have 54 consecutive months of job growth from September 2003 through December 2007 (5 million jobs created), but we actually had two quarters of more tax revenue coming in than what was spent.

5. President Bush, members of his Administration and several GOP senators tried to reign in the abuses of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2003, 2005 and 2006. They warned Congress that strict oversight was necessary. Unfortunately the Democrats in both the House and the Senate took offense to the warnings and declared that there were no problems with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac--in spite of the hundreds of millions of dollars being looted by former Clinton Administration officials during that time. And the Senate Democrats blocked every attempt to get the full Senate to vote on the bills which would have implemented strict oversight.

6. Even with the early effects of the triple whammy (housing market downturn; early subprime mortgage crisis; and the skyrocketing of energy prices) that hit our economy in 2006 and 2007, our economy was still growing. In fact, GDP grew 0.9% in the first quarter and 2.8% in the second quarter of 2008.

UNFORTUNATELY the Democratic controlled Congress did absolutely nothing regarding oversight of the financial institutions since taking office on January 3, 2007. Instead they continued to allow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and banks to push home mortgages to low income individuals that could not afford to pay back the loans EVEN as the housing market began its downturn.

So now you want the same inept Democrats to have larger majorities of both Houses and to take control of the White House. These are the same politicians who would treat al Qaeda as common criminals. These are the same politicians who have an utter disdain for Corporate America. These are the same politicians who want to decimate capitalism with governmental regulations. These are the same politicians who want to redistribute the wealth and destroy the American Dream.

So yes, I do thank God that President Bush has gotten us through the major hits that our economy has taken during his two terms. Unlike his predecessor who did absolutely nothing when the dot com bubble burst because it was an election year, President Bush pushed to rescue the economy with his $700 Billion rescue plan. At least this once, the Democrats in Congress finally decided to act.
