On The Daily Show Tonight, Obama Jokes His White Half Will Be Confused of Who to Vote for

October 29, 2008 7:28 PM

On tonight's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. -- a guest via satellite from Sunrise, Florida -- was asked about the Bradley Effect.

"The Polls have you up," said Stewart, "but then they keep talking about the Bradley Effect, this idea that white voters when they go to the polls they will tell pollsters they will vote for an African American but they won't actually do it?"

"Yeah, they’ve been saying that for awhile but we’re still here," Obama said. "So I don’t know.  I don’t think white voters have gotten this memo about the Bradley Effect."

"Are you concerned in some respects," Stewart joked, "I don’t know how to bring this up, your mother is from Kansas, father African, are you concerned that you may go into the voting booth and --"

"I wont know what to do," Obama joked, finishing the comedian's thought.

" -- your white half will all of a sudden decide, 'I can't do this!'" Stewart said.

"Yeah," Obama said. "It’s a problem ... I’ve been going though therapy to make sure that I vote properly on the 4th."

Everyone is making a big deal about the racists in America and how whites are not voting for Obama simply because he is black. For sure that is true in some places but everyone is overexaggerating and don't even think about looking on the other side of the racist scandal. Many blacks are voting for Obama just for the reason that he is black and that McCain is white. Isn't that a little racist too everybody?

So speaking on character, those voting for mccain are oblivious to the fact that he and palin do not talk about anything except Obama and how much they dislike him. Along with their anger issues and compulsive lying. I have not heard any plans for peace or how to get the economy going from the palin/mccain ticket as she put it. do you really want this dumb broad as your prez. or vice prez. I will take wet behind the ears rather than lying, bitter, overly angry and senile. GI JOE and Caribou barbie wont be getting the dream house this year. And she is my governor. GOOOOBAMA

Is this America? Full of hates, fear, and rumor mongerers? I can't believe it! The country of my origin, we look at up at any Americans black or white with high regards. You! citizens of this country are destroying a great nation because of your ignorance and emotions. We thought that Americans are extra ordinary inteligent individuals. It is a shame! We never had an issue of the color of our skins that is more than white & black. Wake up! This country is plummeting and you are all pushing its own downfall. Stop this divisiveness and ignorance!

I know NOBODY that opposes 0bama because of his race. We'd gladly vote for any race or sex. 0bama's "career" is built on fruad and waste and hate.
Blacks supporting him for no other reason than his race are truly the racists.

0bama is sick. People voting for him because of his race are forgetting MLK: "judge not on the color of the skin, but the content of the character". 0bama's character sucks! Fraud, waste and intimidation.

Hey Michelle - how about Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google Inc.? He's a businessman and he appeared in Obama's commercial. Then there's Warren Buffett and a whole list of rich businesspeople. BTW -- are you stupid enough to believe that McCain is a fiscal conservative? He's a spender just like Bush II. At least Obama is telling you exactly what his plans are and who he's targeting.

Obama should take care of his very poor relatives: aunt in the slums in Boston and brother in hut in Kenya and leave us alone. Don't take our money! For if a man know not how to take care of his own house, how can he take care of our nation!

LCMB
time to get a dictionary: Racism
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
per Merriam Webster It has nothing to do with oppresion or majorities
A person should be voted for on their political stance, not their looks.

If he feels torn it is not because of his race but his economic status. His tax plan is a disaster in the making for the small business man and his employees. Maybe it is Obama's wallet that is telling him to vote for McCain.

I don't even know why you people sit and blog on these boards... It's not like anything you say will change anyone's mind about who they're going to vote for....SHUT UP AND VOTE!!!
And by the way McCain HAD my vote until the eyerolling and breathing heavy that he displayed in the last debate.

Thank GOD Obama is ahead in every single poll. We don't want that fidgety, creepy old man McCain anywhere NEAR the White House! Go Barack!!

Obama is such a celebrity....EXTRA, Ellen, you name it he LOVES Hollywood and should look to take over Denzel's career. My God, what a load.
I'm so sick of his overexposure and lack of credibility!
NEVER OBAMA!
COUNTRY FIRST McCAIN!

Let's see...my grandma has brown eyes and my grandpa has blue. I'm not sure who I should vote for... unless, of course, I consider candidate integrity, judgement, platform.

Jack Welch is a single-issue voter: he says he supports McCain because he's afraid of trade unions. Huh? The economy's on the ropes, and all he can worry about are the unions, which in the U.S. are all but crippled anyway?

How many of you want to wager that blacks have voted for more white candidates than whites have voted for black candidates? How in the hell are black people perpetuating racism by voting for a black candidate? Can the same be said for whites who vote for white candidates? Are you saying that the black candidate is inferior and unqualified for the presidency? Or are you saying that black lack judgment when choosing a black candidate? Please enlighten me.

Posted by: DaisyDooks | Oct 29, 2008 11:15:28 PM

You're right about one thing - blacks can't be racist. They can be prejudiced, but they can't be racist. Racism is the oppression of the majority onto the minority. And as much as whites would love to claim that they are minorities, feeling self-marginalized without ever having to really go through any suffering, they're still the majority in this country, in numbers as well as in power terms.

Jake, I thought this was a funny piece. The Daily Show has some good writers.

Posted by: Lydia | Oct 29, 2008 10:06:09 PM

Remember,....it is an unwritten rule: blacks can't be racist, because they are black. Now he wants to talk about his white half...so that means it is ok.

Umm Michelle and Chuck:

Sen Obama and Sen Biden are campaigning together in Florida tonight - just saw them on TV. And he hasn't been hidden - Sen Biden has been out there campaigning for all to see. All you have to do is open your ears and eyes.

As for his Aunt -- let's not wait for facts or anything -- let's just head straight for the smear and innuendo.

And racist? It's a comedy show for God's sake. I think Sen Obama was making a joke at his own expense. If anyone has the right to make a joke about being biracial - he does.
