Palin-Biden Debate Sets VP Ratings Records
October 04, 2008 9:32 AM
Almost 70 million Americans tuned in to watch the vice presidential debate this week, according to Nielsen, making the Sen. Joe Biden/Gov. Sarah Palin sparring the third most-viewed debate of either presidential or vice presidential candidates since 1992.
The 69.99 million viewers compares thusly with previous No. 2 romps:
43.6 million watched Vice President Dick Cheney debate then-Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, (yes, he was once unquestionably a plausible candidate) in 2004.
29 million watched Cheney debate Sen. Joe Lieberman (yes, he was once a Democrat) in 2000.
26.6 million watched then-Vice President Al Gore and former Rep. Jack Kemp, D-NY, go at it in 1996.
51.2 million watched Gore debate then-Vice President Dan Quayle and Admiral James Stockdale ("Who am I? Why am I here?") in 1992.
46.9 million watched Quayle debate the late then-Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas, ("You're no Jack Kennedy") in 1988.
56.7 million tuned in to watch then-Vice President George H.W. Bush debate then-Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-NY, (yes, she was once unquestionably a Democrat once) in 1984.
For that matter, 52.4 million watched the presidential debate last week between Senator Whats-his-name* and Barack Obama.

* For the humor impaired, this is just a joking reference to how much media attention Gov. Palin has garnered and the intense public interest in her, and the McCain campaign's not entirely ill-founded complaints earlier this campaign that they have had trouble getting media attention for the man at the top of the ticket. Please relax.

Wondering what in the world those trying to pump up Palin might be smoking. Blindness can excused but not self-induced idiocy. The Right always tries to destroy the person and avoid the issues. They never have any concern for the middle class as can be seen by the sorry state of the country thanks to the policies of the GOP that began with Reagan. They cloak themselves in their "righteousnes" and think that everyone else is suspect for not going along with thier views. They like to repeat a lie constantly because they know that some people start believing it (witness the Palin thing). They are good at sound-bite politics because it covers up the "fine print" in their policies. McCain is OLD, his ideas are OLD and he has picked a person who needs a map and detailed instrucctions on how to get to the lower forty-eight from Alaska. BTW, go ahead and drill all over Alaska, poke holes all over it; most of us will never go up there anyway.

Don't be jealous with poeple who work hard to become rich. McCain family is one of hardworking families. Beside, McCain himself is a great leader with experience. It's so ridiculuous when I hear people mention unqualified vice president but never mention unexperience top ticket Barrack Obama. BTW, I agree with Palin what she said about Obama: "... This is not a man who sees America as I see America"

for all you obama/biden -they caught biden in 14 lies. now im not so into polotics but i caught quite a few of them myself . i dont think obama is ready to be prez (or ever will be) and neither did biden think so - but he denied saying that to...just another one of his lies...

Palin tried hard to hang in there. She's full of talking points. She failed mainly because she didn't - and couldn't - distinguish herself and McCain from the Bush administration.
Palin kept saying Biden was looking back and not to the future - but we know the real on this - McCain-Palin do not want to deal with the last 8 years of failures, and they can't demonstrate not one thing...not one fundamental policy where they would be different from Bush. And Biden did not let her off the hook about this, not one time. He was awesome !
Palin said she wants to talk straight to the American people, but the truth is she kept lying to the American people about McCain's record, and I am so very glad that Biden didn't let that stand. He told us the "REAL" and "TRUE" record of McCain and he told us why McCain is so very wrong on domestic and foreign issues. Sen. Biden so expertly told us - an ddemostrated with substantive policies - how only the Obama-Biden ticket are the "REAL" change that we need. And he is correct !
Sen. Biden won this debate. He was strong and precise. He showed a command of the issues. He gave excellent facts and answers.
It's time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin, instead vote for change. It's time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president !
Obama-Biden are the wiser and stronger team to solve the crucial challenges we have in this nation and abroad !

Palin exceeded expectations? This just because people expected she would talk a lot of stupid things as she did in previous interviews by the media, but she did not.
That's not a good rating.
In most of the time, she did not answer the questions, but repeatedly talked about her small town experience or repeated the campaign slogans without substance.

You dems blaim Palin for side stepping and ridicule her for it. However is that not what Barrack does. He wants others to vote for a bail out but he will not make a decision. He believes inthe 2nd amendment rights but believe in gun bands. Or you can caryy guns but they can't have bullets. The fact is I would rather have Palin as a VP than Barrack as the President.

Did you guys know that even if we made the tax rate on paper the same for all people, the top 10% of the rich will pay more in taxes than the rest of the population. Do the math.
Take an example suppose there are 10 people in a room. One of them earns 2 million dollars a year (representing the ultra rich) the rest earn only 100,000 dollars a year (representing the middle class), at 20% uniform tax rate to all, the one rich man alone will pay around 70% of all the taxes - compared to the rest of the nine people in the room.
The question on fairness to all Americans - people on the right and on the left is this. If today the middle class is struggling with job losses and housing foreclosures, is it fair that rich dont stand up and pay what is fairly due of them?
Whom does it hurt more - taking 20,000 dollar away from a person earning 100,000 or 400,000 from a person earning 2 million dollars a year?
For our increased expenses - caused primarily due to Bush lead boneheaded wars, and from economic crisis driven from the flawed concept of complete deregulation of free markets - WHO WILL STAND UP AND PAY THE BILL?
Is is fair to burrow more? Is it fair to pass the burden to the struggling middle class? Is it fair to ask the ultra rich to pay more?
Under Obama's tax plan - 95% of Americans will see a reduction in their taxes. 5% of super rich like Cindy McCain, Rush Limbaugh, Bill ORielly are being asked to be patriotic and stand up when you are being counted on.

Ron: Come on now; Admit that you're one of the rich guys yourself and you don't want to pay higher taxes.
Do you expect us to believe for a second that after all the bogus drives to root out weapons of mass destruction by the Bush administration, like Colin Powell going on TV crying for action, that it was CONGRESS that was pushing for the war? What a joke!
The mortages from Freddie and Frannie were supposed to be structured so that lower income folks COULD afford to pay them.

"Well then how do you explain the fact that the top 10% of tax payers account for more than 70% of all tax revenues? That's like 1.75 trillion, the rest of us in the other 90% paid a paltry 750 billion....."
Top 10% pay 70% of all tax, because they are so obscenely rich that even with their low tax rates compared to anywhere else in the world they end up amounting to 70% off all the taxes. It also goes on the show 90% of America has so small an income relatively that their taxes hardly amount to 30%.
Today the income disparity in US is more than ever. The rich have only become richer and poor poorer over the last 8 years. US has the highest ginni index (46 ) amongst all the industrial nations and is rising. It is comparable to some of the most corrupt third world nations where rich hoard all the money. Ginni index measures how unequal the wealth is distributed in a country.
The war in Iraq was led by the master of all dumb people - Bush. He led us into a war based on flawed intelligence or at worst LIES. Today we are paying the consequences of his SINS. We are paying for the war through our noses and our credibility amongst the comity of nation is at its lowest.
Get the Republican thugs out from the government. - Every one of you vote them out.

Sarah Palin is not qualified to be president. She has barely left the state of Alaska. Don't forget, she will be the next President if the John does not make it. How will she articulate with the foreign countries. If her counterpart, Mr. Biden is vice president, there are no problems. He is brilliant, she is not.
Posted by: emck | Oct 4, 2008 3:32:08 PM
What nonsense. Palin could not answer the tough questions, she simply side stepped them or used generalities. Whenever a tough question was asked she went back to her favorite Energy policy in Alaska, or simply "Doggone it" or ~gasp~ wink! She has such an hollow personality...
No wonder Palin failed so miserably when Couric asked followed up on questions such that she could not side step.
If Biden went after her like Couric did and asked follow up questions today the right wing pinheads will be all up in arms and accusing Biden of Sexism.
It is so pathetic that today the conservative right has chosen someone who would only qualify in American Idol as their VP candidate. They really are devoid of any ideas.

The Rich don't pay their share?
Well then how do you explain the fact that the top 10% of tax payers account for more than 70% of all tax revenues? That's like 1.75 trillion, the rest of us in the other 90% paid a paltry 750 billion.....
The war in Iraq, Congress made the bonehead decision to invade. They are the only ones that can. Let's blame the correct boneheads here.
The tax cuts have increased revenues since they were enacted in 2003. The problem is the corrupt congress spends more than they take in. I'm glad they don't control my checkbook.
The economic crisis? A Direct result of the Democratically run Fannie May and Freddie Mac making loans to people who they knew couldn't repay them.
Pinhead.

I have seeen the debate several times for the past few days. And the more I saw it, the more obvious it become that Mrs. Palin is the absolute winner! I thought Joe Biden won, when I saw it the first time. But when you connects the dots in Palin's answers, conduct, attitude, performance without considering her new to the political arena, she has overmastered Joe Biden and demonstrate to the American people the way yo go. I do not have any interest who is going to be the president as I am not living, neither is from the USA. However, basesd on principle, Mrs Palin with Jhon McCain in the right way to go..

For those who still believe that Rich in US are paying the higest taxes consider this -
Why is it that rich athletes from European countries seek to settle in US specifically to evade taxes in their homelands? Is it something to do with how easy it is to evade taxes in US? The most famous example is Steffi Graf - the tennis player who is facing tax evasion charges back in her homeland Germany.
The fact is today the rich European countries like France, Germany, Scandinavian countries have some of the highest tax rates anywhere in the world. Every talking head on the right will shout with glee how socialist the europeans are - yet with straight faces in these elections they LIE that rich in america are taxed the most - even more than in Europe.

It's not Palin's fault the media and the DNC pushed Hiliary out the door for Obama, DEAL WITH IT!!! Some people just can't face their reality!!! The DNC and the media SCREWED Hilliary!!! Stop taking it out on Palin. God, only an idiot would look to attack the next woman, for the fact that media and party bosses from her own party brought Hilliary down! But then again, how many idiots can the DNC hold? The number may be infinite! I mean tearing down anothe woman, in favor of the guy who's operatives were behind the 1st woman's demise. I mean this is perpetuating the WORSE stereotype of women imaginable! SO easy to manipulate, and for SO little. Take your insult, know your place, and attack one of your own! Boy, do women NEED the DNC THAT much! Talk about a "battered wife syndrome!" Ladies, you are free to think for yourselves, and make up your own minds. Feel free to disagree with Palin, but have facts and reasons, rather than making her the scapegoat fir your own party's treatment of yourselves, and your standard bearer. Stop and think, PLEASE! It will help your credibility in the long run.

To JSmith; We don't care about facts and figures or even good sense. The fact is that we just don't have enough courage to vote for anybody but the good ol' boys. They got us into this mess and we're afraid that they'll have to get us out. We think we can speak for all our cowardly cardboard-christian conservative friends when we say our plan is to vote the Rebublicans back in and then grab our ankles for four more years.
We just don't have anywhere near enough guts to even consider anything else!

Cheryl: Are your standards really so low that you've been waiting your whole life for a candidate exactly like Sarah Palin? There are dozens of well-known conservative women in politics who are vastly more qualified than Sarah Palin, and who knows how many who are not normally in the public eye. Ethical lapses aside, she has an extremely small world view, and seems to share with George Bush a lack of intellectual curiosity. A hundred years ago she would have been acceptable, but not in today's world.
Posted by: openmind | Oct 4, 2008 2:44:43 PM
Cheryl, why don't you just listen to Plain's speeches?
That's all she did during the "debate" -READ HER SPEECH from index cards.
When someone says openly, "I'm not going to answer the questions", does that not tell you something about her lack of knowledge? I can't believe they let her do that. A male candidate certainly would not have gotten the free ride she did. And, even then, she still lost.
It was obvious she had practiced talking points and was only going to read them instead of actually answering the questions asked.
No way Palin is ready for national politics.
IF THE MODERATOR HADN'T BEEN SCARED BY ALL THE BS "SHE'S BIAS" CRAP, SHE WOULD HAVE MADE PALIN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ASKED.

Some one below mentioned that rich in US already pay the highest taxes in the world. Thats a lie. There are numerous sops in the tax code that allow the rich to get away with lower taxes. Worse tax cheats in the ultra rich stove away their money in off shore holding companies and don't even pay their due.
Here is a question to you pinheads on the right - today we have enormous deficits partly due to Bush tax cuts and his boneheaded decision to invade Iraq which is costing us a fortune and international credibility. Add to that the continued Republican policy of lack of regulation which has lead us into this economic crisis.
How are we going to afford this enormous financial burden? Will the rich continue to evade giving what is due of them? Or will the Republicans ask us to borrow more money? Or will they ask the struggling middle class to bear more than they can afford?
