Palin-Biden Debate Sets VP Ratings Records
October 04, 2008 9:32 AM
Almost 70 million Americans tuned in to watch the vice presidential debate this week, according to Nielsen, making the Sen. Joe Biden/Gov. Sarah Palin sparring the third most-viewed debate of either presidential or vice presidential candidates since 1992.
The 69.99 million viewers compares thusly with previous No. 2 romps:
43.6 million watched Vice President Dick Cheney debate then-Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, (yes, he was once unquestionably a plausible candidate) in 2004.
29 million watched Cheney debate Sen. Joe Lieberman (yes, he was once a Democrat) in 2000.
26.6 million watched then-Vice President Al Gore and former Rep. Jack Kemp, D-NY, go at it in 1996.
51.2 million watched Gore debate then-Vice President Dan Quayle and Admiral James Stockdale ("Who am I? Why am I here?") in 1992.
46.9 million watched Quayle debate the late then-Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas, ("You're no Jack Kennedy") in 1988.
56.7 million tuned in to watch then-Vice President George H.W. Bush debate then-Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-NY, (yes, she was once unquestionably a Democrat once) in 1984.
For that matter, 52.4 million watched the presidential debate last week between Senator Whats-his-name* and Barack Obama.

* For the humor impaired, this is just a joking reference to how much media attention Gov. Palin has garnered and the intense public interest in her, and the McCain campaign's not entirely ill-founded complaints earlier this campaign that they have had trouble getting media attention for the man at the top of the ticket. Please relax.

I would rather vote for the person who had the foresight four years ago to know that Freddie and Fannie were in trouble.

FACTCHECK found that by the time McCain added his name to the bill as a cosponsor, the collapse was well underway.

It's interesting how people see such different things. Cherly saw Biden "diggin' on getting kicked in the bum by Palin's spurs."
I thought it was more like on a game show when the contestant can win some huge amount of money by answering a question, and half way through the reading of the question the contestant starts to smile because they know the rest of the question and they know that they know the answer.
Rather than answer a question, she would start to level a charge against Obama (taxes, health care, Fannie Mae, etc, take your pick), and Biden already knew what she would say. I'm not sure if he was laughing because he already knew how to respond, or because he thought her answers were (as they were in her debate in Alaska) lots of words with little or no substance.
That alone should tell you something about how shallow her understanding is. "I'm not going to answer questions the way you want me to, I'm going to talk to the American people about my record as mayor and governor." Shame on all of you who think that during a debate on the issues, that is an acceptable response. A speech is not a debate.

Sarah Palin: She can bring home the bacon (like Osama Bin Laden); fry it up in a pan; and never, ever let you forget you da man! She'll be the United States' version of Golda Meier AND Princess Di!

COME ON! We've been waiting for a woman candidate EXACTLY like Sarah Palin to come along since elementary school when we were told we might be President of the U.S. one day. VOTE HER IN!

History has given us some "October Surprises" - How about another VP debate with Biden/Palin??? One more debate! One More Debate!! One More Debate!!

The rich in this country already pay the higest tax rates in the world, and our tax revenues have never been higher. If we raise their taxes, revenues go down.

As for the success of the surge: According to a British newspaper report of several weeks ago, one the biggest reasons for the drop in violence that we Americans attribute to the surge was in fact British special ops soldiers who were patrolling the streets and taking out, one by one, the "bad guys," for lack of a better word.
I don't know if it is true or not, and I know that most Americans never hear news from other perspectives, and half of you will probably simply dismiss this as unpatriotic, calling me some nasty name, with "liberal" thrown in for emphasis. To those of you, I suggest you broaden your world view with some foreign news sources.
But since we are fighting maybe a few thousand "terrorists" across a pretty big area, it stands to reason that special teams trained for finding individuals and taking them out would be more effective than sending 30,000 troops whose previous training was in whatever their jobs were before they were deployed as national guard members.
Al Qaida is more akin to organized crime than it is to a "rogue nation." I don't seem to recall from my history books that we sent 150,000 troops into Chicago during prohibition to battle organized crime, nor did we do so to try to break up the KKK.

During the VP debate, it was clear as the nose on your face that Biden was diggin' on getting kicked in the bum by Palin's spurs. Looked like he enjoyed the debate as well as the Republicans did! eee-haw!

I can't believe national pundits are calling the Biden/Palin debate remotely close; they must be concerned about remaining neutral. That folksy act; the winking, the smirks, the betcha by golly wows....?
I've heard more credible pitches from strippers
Apparently Joe Six Pack buys tickets to this type of show. Palin appears to me as someone overly confident, working hard to hide a sarcastic nature that borders with obnoxious, combined with a supreme sense of arrogance. She appears to be a world class expert at both the art of seduction and public speaking. I can see why McCain picked her. Frauds wearing similar feathers, flock together.
Hey Joe. Yeah, you in Ohio. Read a few books, wouldja? You're screwing up this country. You're telling me that church on Sunday gets in the way of watching Meet The Press? Then please, at least pray to Jesus that John McCain's first executive decision will be his last one.
Alaska is just...insert sarcastic smirk here ...the perfect distance between her and Washington D.C.
For the middle class to get stronger, the middle class needs to get smarter. Humor me, Joe.
Put that beer down and takeagander at the new article about Mr. McCain over at Rolling Stone.com. McCane hasn't changed one iota since age 15. You really to investigate his life before Nov 4th
And while you're at it, forward the the link to your brothers in Indiana and Florida.
It's up to you, Joe Six Pack. Don't blow it for us

The CHEMISTRY between Biden and Palin was so charged they could make a great romantic comedy film together: Guaranteed more chemistry than there was between George Clooney and Renee Zelweger in Leatherheads!

Aw, too bad Republicans...
Gallup numbers POST DEBATE are out!!
Gallup Tracking 10/01 - 10/03
Obama = 50%
McCain = 42% Obama +8
I guess Americans weren't impressed with Palin's canned answers and her little memorized speeches huh??
Also is it within the debate rules to have answers written on notes cards at the podium like Palin had? Sure was funny to see her reading some prepared "general answer" that didn't even match the question asked half of the time...
You can't learn how to be VP or President (if something happens to McCain) by cramming for a week....
How pathetic that the MSM even gives her any credibility at all!

As for "preconditions" - After trashing Obama for his "no preconditions" stance, Palin promptly threw out the preconditions of the debate: The format of ANY debate is questions are asked, then the opponents debate their positions on the answers. She chose to ignore those questions and simply present her speech in modified form. Would that be the McCain-Palin foreign policy: Agree to preconditions, then show up and then completely disregard them? That's not being a "maverick"; that's just reckless.

"Be absolutely ruthless," adds Camp Obama director Jocelyn Woodards, who leads the intensive two-day training course for campers in Chicago.
-----
The gentlemen (as they mostly are, as opposed to ladies) of the media had better be "absolutely ruthless" with themselves, and spill the beans on Obama -- the fixing of the nomination, his rise to power in Chicago, the Columbia records mystery, the whole deal.
Having the mob in control of the Democratic Party AND the White House won't be an improvement over the present, inasmuch as it's the mob-led "Democrats" in league with the PRESENT fascist occupants of the White House.
Get Howard Dean and Jesse Jackson in a bunker somewhere, and start debriefing 'em, is my suggestion.

That was no debate - it was a farce!

I continue to be amazed at attacks on the "liberal media" and all the comments about how wonderfully Sarah Palin did in the debates. For someone who spent much time attacking Obama's position that he would meet our "enemies" without preconditions, it was a bit ironic that a few minutes into the debate Palin arrogantly told the moderator that she's not going to answer the questions they way Ifill and Biden want her to. She then proceeded to ignore all questions and pose her own, which showed how unable she was to actually compete in a debate. When she was literally reading from index cards to give answers to questions that she essentially asked herself, I can't understand how that is considered a strong performance. One of her answers was almost verbatim what she said to Katie Couric. A "liberal media" would have slammed her for that; even a "fair media" should have seen that all she does is repeat memorized loaded words and phrases, interspersed with a lot of happy talk and pseudo-patriotic empty words, with a few nasty slurs thrown in while smiling. Do we really want people like that to continue representing our country to the rest of the world? I sure hope not.

Does the war-party of Bush-McCain-Palin really believe in the right to life?
Do you know that more children than soldiers have been - and continue to be - killed, seriously wounded, malnourished, and struck by illness as a result the Iraq war?
Is this the correct response to terrorist acts and threats: the creation of conditions in which thousands of children in Iraq are killed and maimed?
The Palin-McCain-Bush denomination claims that the surge of U.S. soldiers in Iraq has been positive. That, of course, is a characteristically dangerous warmongering over-simplification and is dead wrong.
“Despite any efforts put into the surge, the first six months of 2007 was still the most deadly first six months for civilians of any year since the invasion.”
And we still don’t have an accurate tally of the ongoing death and destruction.
In any case, the assertion of surge success is likely to be little comfort to the thousands of already dead, diseased, and disfigured children, victims of the Palin-McCain-Bush neocon holy war.
While Palin smirks and winks, while McCain beats his war drums, while Bush bumbles on, here are some additional important questions to consider:
How many more children is the Palin-Bush-McCain war-party willing to kill and maim to perpetuate the neocon holy war in an effort to achieve a so-called “victory” on terms they cannot even define?
How many and whose children are you willing to sacrifice through direct support of this war, or through apathy and inaction?
Do children in Iraq and elsewhere have a right to life?
Do the efforts of Palin-McCain-Bush to continue to wage war in Iraq really prove that they truly value a right to life?

Sarah Palin cannot answer followup questions. In the current format of debates Palin simply sidestepped all questions she could not answer. Or simply escaped with generalities.
The difference with Katie Couric interviews is - she simply could not do that.
Palin was indeed effectively exposed by Katie Couric that Palin is just a lipstick on a Pig.
Palin's constant reliance on winking and you betchas just reinforce the image that she is covering her defeciencies by diverting attention.

Some of you are making grave logical errors when you assume that someone who says "aw shucks" a lot has no brains. Underestimating Palin based on her style makes you guys look like the idiots.
I am sure she rather enjoys befuddling you all -- letting you get offended and cozy with the idea that she's a no-mind -- while she prepares to pounce. LOL
But I'll be voting for Bob Barr.

Hey Bob, your age is showing. Faulting someone for having Military insurance ESPECIALLY because his Father was off defending our country so you could go to history class, is a bit of a stretch, don't you think? Not to mention that he followed in his father's footsteps and fought in a war that became a controversial mess. Of course that was after years of torture, which impaired him for life! You're right, why should he have good insurance!

The comment above by reader that says Sarah Palin showed us how to field dress a donkey wearing high heels was incomplete. The correct statement is that Sarah Palin showed us how to field dress a donkey wearing high heels and red lipstick.
